LG weak signal performance? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Where I live we have 0 to 1 bar of 4G on our Samsung phones, and sometimes it switches to 3G.
From my experience where I live an HTC phone will always have 4G signal even when our Samsungs don't. How does LG typically do in the weak signal department?
I really want a G3, but only if the radio is better than my S4, Note 2, and Note 3.

The LG always has best signal strength especially with 4G networks. Do read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2660471

[Q] Are Issues Resolved in 4.0.4 Update?

I've been interested in a Verizon GNEX [CDMA] since launch, but have held off purchase due to the following reported issues:
1) inability to call out or hold a call from areas where other phones can
2) inability to establish or hold a data connection from areas where other phones can
3) slow handoff from 4G to 3G to 1x
4) data connection remains in 1x or 3G in a strong 4G area until restart
5) poor battery life due to constant hunting for signal
6) random reboots
7) microphone cuts out during phone call
8) loud screeching sound during phone call
9) low speaker volume
10) ringtone volume not separate from notification volume
These issues have been reported to persist through multiple handset exchanges. From what I've read, the handoff issues (#3 and #4) appear to be resolved in the leaked 4.0.4 update and this has improved battery life (#5). Is this true?
For those of you who have experienced any of the above issues and installed the leaked 4.0.4 update, can you confirm these issues are resolved? Have any of the other issues you've experienced been resolved by this update?
I have a Galaxy Nexus GSM which was originally yakjuxw (if it matters), bought in Sweden in December 2011. Never had ANY of the issues you're mentioning. The only issue I had was that the phone got pretty hot, but with custom roms and especially Franco Kernel my phone is 10x better than stock in all aspects
Thanks, @Eddie!
I should've been more specific. As I understand it, the GNEX GSM is more robust than the GNEX CDMA.
I can confirm that 3,4 & 5 are fine in 4.0.4. I've not experienced either of your two 6s (you have two issue #6s in your first post) along with 7 either, however I don't use the phone much for voice calls.
I'll have the phone in Norcross GA next week which has poor Verizon coverage and will compare it with my DX to evaluate 1 & 2.
Thanks, @Sleuth! What a nice guy!
I live in an area that gets marginal 3G reception. The Nexus would be my first 4G phone. My concern is that it may not be able to function as a phone at my house if the radios have reception inferior to my present phone. That is the reason why I'm most interested if items #1 and #2 are resolved with the 4.0.4 update.

That's the rumor. I'm interested in the reality...
I'm also very interested if the microphone dropout during call (i.e. those you're speaking to can no longer hear you) and loud screechng noise during call (possibly feedback?) issues are resolved (items #7 and #8). Those definitely affect the phone conversation experience.

I don't have ANY of these issues on my present phone. To experience them on a new upgrade flagship phone that I'm paying a premium price for would be unacceptable.
There's no need to wait or hope. The 4.0.4 update is already out, available for installation for those who root and ROM their phones (as I would do if I had these issues). That's why I posted this question in this forum.
My only question is simple - are these issues resolved or not?
I just picked up the LTE G Nex (I've owned the GSM version for a few months) and must admit that the reception on it is noticeably worse than my old Verizon LTE phones (Thunderbolt and Droid Charge). I am on the deodexed version of 4.0.4.
So far, my coverage in Norcross GA has been identical in terms of signal strength. They must've just added LTE to the existing towers. However, I am getting 4G coverage here so I'm getting much better data throughput than I ever had. Not too many people here using the 4G service yet so the spectrum is pretty much open.
I'll be here a few more days and will get more opportunity to compare. I'd like to see a 3G handoff happen...
Slightly OT, but the GNex GPS hardware is way superior to the DX. I actually got a lock inside the Avis parking structure

Actually its the same. The Nexus uses almost the same exact radio chip set. Reason you think signal is worse is because the Droid Charge displayed signal bars based off of your 3g coverage, not lte.Put your nexus into 3g mode and I can almost guarantee you your signal bars will go back up to a comparable level of your charge

Android prior to 4.0/ICS was not able to separately display 4G/LTE signal bars in the notification area. LTE phones on Android 2.x are actually showing you their 3G signal strength even when you are on 4G.
The Galaxy Nexus and Droid Charge use virtually identical LTE and EV-DO radios. Any signal differences between the two would be very minor and a result of antenna design at most.

Yeah, I remember reading that. But I thought that Verizon/Google was going to change how the Nexus displays signal strength to match other LTE phones like the Droid Charge, though. I'm on 4.0.4.

So in that case is safe to say Verizon's LTE is to blame here. Has anyone done a speed test side by side. If we get the same results well there's your answer and if we don't we know who to blame.

Just got a microSIM adapter so I decided to test this out. I did Speedtests in the exact same location in my house and swapped the microSIM from my G Nex into both my Droid Charge and Thunderbolt. Speedtest numbers in the same locations were faster with my older LTE phones (around 6-7 up and 2.5 down) vs. my G Nex (around 4 up and 2 down). Also, I had to toggle my GNex's network mode to get it to 4G because it initially was only on 3G in this location. This poor reception is frankly the only thing I dislike about my LTE G Nex.

I believe that is the key. From what I've read, the GNEX works great in strong 4G areas. I don't believe my home location will be so fortunate.

Radio comparison - Verizon GN vs Thunderbolt

Both phones set to CDMA EVDO only, no LTE radios active. Location is 3G EHRPD enabled, but does not have any 4G towers for miles. I held both phones the exact same way in the exact same location within 30 seconds of each other to record my results.
Signal Test:
Galaxy Nexus 3G Signal Strength: 0-1 bars, -120dbm 99 asu - -100dbm 1 asu
Thunderbolt 3G Signal Strength: 1-3 bars, -94dbm 2 asu - -85dbm 2 asu
Bandwidth Test:
Galaxy Nexus 3G Bandwidth: 0.86mbps down, 0.54mbps up
Thunderbolt 3G Bandwidth: 2.94mbps down, 0.56mbps up
Bandwidth test was the best of 3 runs using www.speakeasy.net/speedtest connecting to New York, NY. Current location is central NJ.
My Galaxy Nexus is running stock 4.0.4 with the newest radios and bootloader, along with Imo's kernel 2.4.1 exp2.
Honestly, after having my Thunderbolt for 8 months, coming to this supposed better phone and having these kind of radio problems is just appalling. The Thunderbolt was always railed for being the pioneer of LTE radios, and for getting weak signal. Well after these tests I am not sure what to believe besides the truth that is sitting in front of me. My brand spanking new Google phone has by far the worst radio I've ever seen in a Verizon smartphone.
I'm going to be hopeful in getting an update that may resolve these radio issues, but the realist in me tells me this is 100% hardware.
I'd like to get some results from other Verizon Galaxy Nexus users running 3G to see what kind of dbm and bar signal, as well as what kind of bandwidth you guys are getting. I am very disappointed and want to know if it's a hardware defect or if this phones radios' really are this bad
Meh. The Qualcomm radios in both of these phones are in fact ****. I think the build of the Galaxy Nexus (whether it be physical or software) has something to do with it. Maybe Samsung herp derped the position of the radios or Google took a **** on the blobs.
Regardless, its a great phone and still gets better data speeds than every other carrier and phone. -coughs- iPhone users -coughs-
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Except it doesn't get the best data speeds of any other phones, as my test results conclude.
Even on 4G I've nabbed 40mbps down 15mbps up bandwidth tests on that same exact Thunderbolt when I was in a good signal 4G area. How much have most GN users hit on 4G? 30mbps down?
This phone is a great micro-tablet, but as a phone it is heavily lacking.

Really, cause I have seen people getting upwards of 50mb/s on the Nexus (seems like most of them live in NYC).
Not to mention I was talking about people on other carriers.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Other carriers is a given, but that really isn't what the point of this comparison is. The point is I'm holding two phones on the same carrier, at the same time, the same way, and one performs multitudes greater performance than the other. Has nothing to do with other carriers.
Fact is this phones radio is junk. You can have a quad core 1080p Super AMOLED Plus screen and 2GB of RAM, the best GPU on the market and 128GB of space, but if it can't hold a signal to save YOUR life, then what good is it at as a phone?
Samsung/Google needs to get on this right now and fix this phones radio. I'm just worried that it can't be fixed through a software OTA...
And I'd also like some speed comparisons, namely 3G, from other Verizon GN users if possible please.
On 3g i used to get about -75 at worst with thunderbolt at my house. Currently getting -93 at best with two different galaxy nexus. Usually worse. Used to have a stable 4g signal too. Now it drops after a few seconds

That sounds about right... very disappointed in these radios.
I get the same -120dbm, 99asu with my Nexus at home, where I would get around 95dbm on my old Tbolt. I think the antenna/radio gives up signal quicker at the fringe distances faster on the Nexus - if I go into a city I get the signal strength I am supposed to get. I have a theory that part of the problem may lie with Verizon's use of old Alltel towers (I'm on the VA/NC border) - The signal in my area is consistently weak, but I've gone to other rural areas & gotten good strength. Perhaps Samsung/VZW will give us a software update on the phones...and perhaps when they upgrade our towers around here for LTE it might straighten up the tower's overall firmware...But we probably wont get LTE here until 2020.

[Q] Download speed??

Hi all,
My question is does the Note II have a weak antenna compared to Note1 or does the Note II comming from Korea need an Aussie CSC/Modem to be able to performe at its peak in Aussie?
I finally took the plunge and bought the Note II.
Managed to Root, CMW, Back up with CMW and Tiatanium, also backed up EFS.
Still on stock as much as possible and mostly happy. The phone is vey smooth and fast. (came frome Note 1).
My question is related to the data speeds. I have a N7105 (SHV-E250K) from Korea, and the data speeds on the Aussie network Telstra are the fastest and slowest Ive seen.(see attached).
On my Note1 the speeds were constantly reasonable and I could live with them. ( I live about 1/2 hour from a large town). Note 1 could pick up 3G where I live, The Note II won't. Note II looses 4G and 3G soon after leaving town. Note 1 keeps getting 3G all the way Home.
As can be seen the 4G speeds are amazing. However not sure I can live with the G speeds

Agreed, but the difference between 40Mbps and 0.02Mbps cannot be explained by network congestion. All speed tests were outside (so no building interference) on a clear night. My thoughts are either hardware (antenna) or software (VPN/CSC). Could be wrong, but it is a huge drop to be explained by anything else. :-\

Okay, Maybe I should have been more clear.
When I'm in the 4G area Note 2 shows 4G is Fast++, Note 1 shows 3G and is fast+.
In the 3G area Note 2 Shows G (sometimes 3G) and is slow (reasonable speed when 3G shown). Note 1 shows 3G and is fast+
in G area Note 2 shows G and is very slow. Note 1 also slow but picks up 3G most of time (speed okay when showing 3G)
Basically Note 1 shows 3G in most areas whereas Note 2 only picks up 3G/4G near and in town
Will try to get a side by side comparison of the two phones in the same areas at the same time and screen shot

Simply put you need quad band for UMTS(3G) to work properly in Oz.
E250K has UMTS(3G): 1900, 2100
N7105 and N7100 has UMTS(3G): 1900, 2100, 850, 900 aka quad band

Note 2 3g vs Note 2 4g LTE - Battery life

Hi all,
I am planning to get a note 2 from mobicity here in Australia.
I have the choice of either the 4g LTE version or the 3g version.
My network at the moment doesn't support 4g, so i would only be getting it to future proof it. And i am moving back to England soon, so i might get 4g when I go there.
But if I get the 4g version, I know that 4g LTE uses a lot more battery then the 3g version. But if I disabled 4g in settings (like you can disable 3g on the galaxy s2) would I then get the same battery life as the 3g version? Or would I still get worse battery life?.
I really need to know, as if I would still get worse battery life, I will get the 3g version.
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Corey

The 4G version will chew through it's battery substantially quicker than 3G. You have to ask yourself whether 4G speeds is worth this sacrifice?
Seeing how you don't have 4G coverage anyway, I would stick with the 3G version.
I HATE it when people say they want a 'future proof' phone because:
a)The phone will be outdated (hardware wise) within 12 months and;
b)Most people (particularly on XDA) buy a new phone every year
Now having said all this, the 4G version does have one ace up it's sleeve over the 3G version - DC-HSDPA on 3G. The N7100 doesn't have this (it maxes out at HSPA+).
So, if you did get the 4G, and disabled 4G, you'd *theoretically* get faster speeds than the 'standard' N7100. Assuming of course, that your network supports DC-HSDPA, which I'm not sure Optus does.

Hi,
I don't have 4g coverage at the moment, but i am moving to England soon, and I heard they are starting to roll out 4g there at the moment.
I am only 16, and I am currently un-employed, so i don't have any income, apart from the money my dad gives me, so i can't upgrade my phone each year.
That's why I want to future proof it.
If I do buy the 4g version, and I disabled 4g in settings (I heard the was a option for that in the setting of the n2) then would I get the same battery life as if I had the 3g version? As that should disable the 4g radio. And from what I can find out, the only difference between the 4g and the 3g version is the 4G radio in the lte version.
Thanks
Cheers

Ok thanks,
Do you know if it would give the same battery life as the 3g model if I disabled 4g?
As battery life is really important for me, as my current phone is the galaxy s2, and the battery life is terrible on it, I have to recharge 2 to 3 times a day, so no matter which note 2 I get it will be better then that.
But i want to get the best battery life I can.
Thanks

I don't know if anyone can guarantee it will be the same between the two, but no matter how you slice it, you'll still get MUCH better battery life on the N2 than on your S2...even if you keep 4g on...so if you turn it off, it will just be that much better. It's a win win either way.

Here are the facts as i've had both n7100 and n7105.
N7100 gave me 9 to 10 hours on screen battery time almost all the time.
N7105 gives me just over 7 hours. This is 3g only as i'm with 3uk and they only deal with 3g. Their 3g network gives me 19meg download speeds most of the time though.
So a big difference and i actually miss my old n7100 but i'm loving n7105 speeds to. Catch 22 situation. So even with 4g disabled and settings set to 3g only the n7105 radio uses more power.
what is the reason?

Thats specifically why I went for the N7105 because I have unlimited data on that network and the N7100 doesn't support DC.
I use the phone a lot and I easily get a full days use on a single charge and as long as I can do that I don't care as I charge the phone every night.

Well, previously everybody was thinking and seeing that LTE used more power and basically it did. Most of that was attributed to lte using a second board for the radio. As second gen lte radios have been integrated onto soc's it has been noted that lte can be more efficient if utilized properly because with lte's low latency and quick bursts of speed the phone can race to idle quicker. I am sure this is a very effective for people who use sync services a lot. If used properly, I am sure the phone can poll for data in quick bursts and can definitely help battery life. This is not always the case between OEM'S being lazy and sloppy and depending on what and how often the phone needs to poll for data. I would also think if lte has bad reception it can have a worse effect than hspa would. I almost got a carrier version of gnote2 to have lte because I want to test it so bad but I hate my carrier enough as is and I hate bloatware with a passion.

First, thank u "@rbiter" because of ur opinion, but my intent was that, considering by my carrier 3G speed(3.5G up to 7.2 MB but generally is less than 1.5 MB) Galaxy Note II LTE version uses more battery life than Galaxy Note II 3G?and is it a huge differnce?or is it sustainable?
4g speed is worth the battery life i would say..i am a 4g user..

From what I've read they are comparable. But at the same time I've noticed some people getting up to 20% less battery than the international version. A lot of factors go into that like usage and reception. If you really want lte, I would say get it, that is if you really need more than 1.5mb/s more often than not. I turned it down because I am fortunate enough to get up to 5mb/s in ideal situations and 1-3mb/s in less than ideal situations and plenty of WiFi in between.

here carriers want to provide LTE this year, but if they don't launch it at right calender, and Galaxy note II LTE drain more power in contrast of 3G version,it will be lose-lose game!!

Make sure the lte bands are compatible and that you have coverage. If you don't have coverage I would just get the n7100. BTW, even though I think Nokia and Motorola by far still make the best phones as far as reception is concerned, Samsung should get an honorable mention for being very battery friendly when signal is poor. Nokia too. Motorola is iffy when it comes to poor signal. And not to mention, the galaxy note 2 gets very good reception for a Samsung phone and by far has the best WiFi reception of any phone I have ever had. Even better than my atrix.

But I confused again, let ask in another way, image that I have 3G network,I have to choose gnote II n7100 or n7105, in same setting and usage n7105(operated on 3G mode) drain power as much as n7100?or more, how much?

if you buy an 7105 and don't use lte at all, it will probably get a little less battery like i mentioned before. otoh though, it has dc-hspa so it would depend if you get the same as n7100 on your coverage and speeds. anyways, at most you will probably see a 20% loss of what you would see with a 7100. at most. anyways, quit asking for my approval. if you can get an unlocked n7105 and don't mind a small POTENTIAL loss, you should be good to go.

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy S8+'s LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
I get a low 4g signal at work whereas on my s7 edge I didn't get anything
Mine is a lot better than any phone I've had before. Usually at home on all my other phones I have 1-2 bars and on the S8+ I have at least 4 bars.
Bars are no indication of true signal strength. My S8+ doesn't get nearly as strong of a signal as my Pixel XL. I drop signal a lot more often now. I was rather disappointed with the performance of the cell radio actually.
For me, the signal is about the same at home. But at work, the S8+ performs much better than the Note5 that I had... Must be an extra band or something. The Note5 would hang on to an unusable LTE signal or drop to 3G/1x inside my job. The S8+ stays on on LTE with a usable signal.

It's worst Then S8 as I used that before shifting to S8 plus. But download speed is great.
My S7 was better. The S7 ised a new duel antenna tech, I am not sure the S8 used it or not.
My AT&T Note 4 and my new S8+ get about the same signal, which is really disappointing
I generally see around 5-8dbm better then I did with my pixel xl at home..notice the s8+ does drop signal little easier tho then my pixel in fringe areas
Tested right outside my house. Never had these speeds on my Note 5.
Comming from a S6, the signals and speeds are far better, also my s6 was missing a few bands so never ever got speeds like this on my Jio 4G Network in India
At work on LTE Im getting 31 Mbps down and 6 Mbps up. Not bad! Faster than our company wifi!

I used to get 54Mbps which WAS faster than the company wifi. Then we bumped up to 500Mb.
Poor Reception in Canada on Bell Mobility
I just got an unlocked S8+ that was apparently originally from Sprint (because that is where the home page goes in Samsung Internet).
I do not get very good reception on it – even in urban/suburban areas. Sometimes, when I am inside a building, it disappears altogether. I often get 1 or 2 bars on the reception indicator. If I check the “Sim Card Status” screen under settings I get -105 dBm 3 asu. I don’t really know what those numbers mean.
Is there anything I can do to improve reception? Should I be calling Bell and maybe they need to know what kind of phone I have? Should I expect an S8+ purchased directly from Bell (they also carry this phone) to have better reception? Or is the reception of “105 dBm 3 asu” fine and it’s just the indicator showing low levels?
As much as I like this phone I cannot be missing calls randomly. I have a business to run.
Thanks.

Hey fish you want it down, the dBm i mean. Here's a quote "-50 dBm is great signal or full bars. -120 dBm is very poor signal or a dead zone." you at 105 dBm is garbage, no wonder your missing calls.. Since you are experiencing network issues, you could get a replacement, but i don’t think it will make much difference. as it's all same hardware. Why not get a Google Pixel XL i heard they got awesome reception! Or if you’re at home a lot, purchase an lte repeater booster ? Problem Solved!
Drop in signal & Block sign
Im living in UAE - and my service provider is etisalat, and my 4G signal is dropping and sometimes i get block sign, i tried my sim in different device it working.
i have started a thread on the subject if anyone could help me please.

I went through a whole “carrier switching” routine (details found somewhere on these forums) and after changing the CSC to Canadian I flashed Bell Mobility's firmware. The phone now shows that it’s an SM-G955W which is the Canadian model. And apparently now supports additional LTE bands 29(700) and 30(2300) which were missing from the SM-G955U (I determined this by dialing *#2263#).
I have no idea if it *really* supports these bands or just *says* that it does but my gut tells me that it really does support them. I suspect that the hardware for the SM-G955U and SM-G955W is 100% identical and any differences are controlled through software only.
And I seem to have better reception now. I am getting 4 to 5 bars in most places and under -100 dBm in most places. Plus Wi-Fi calling works now so I have reception in my basement at my house.
The true test will be when we go camping next summer.
