Complete / total flash back to stock. - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed the LG G2 launcher ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/themes-apps/lg-g2-leaked-kitkat-launcher-ported-t2580358
And want to go back. I don't have a backup of course...
I can't flash the OTA update, even though shows all the time in the notification area I can't get into S-OFF (Whelp!)
So I flashed viper one, and now it wont boot. (Into TWRP recovery is OK, just wont get past Viper logo and get un-rebootable at this point (just have to let battery run out)
Is there an official HTC M8 tool I can use to just get everything back to stock?

You don't need to let the battery run down. Just hard reset the phone by pressing vol up and power until it restarts.

[Q] Cannot boot into Recovery!!

So you probably see these types of threads all the time, but this one is different--
So the phone is a T-Mobile G2, Yes, It is Rooted, and S-OFF.
Long story short, I rooted the phone fine, but I cannot reboot into recovery.
I have the newest CWM flashed. It is version 3.0.0.5. When I try to boot the phone into recovery, it simply gets stuck on the HTC Logo screen. But, it is not bricked, but if I remove the battery, and put it back in, the phone boots and its fine. One more time. The phone is S-OFF and rooted.
The only thing I can do is flash CM 2.5.1.3...... 2.5.1.4+ do not work.
I just want to know WHY its doing this. Its my friends G2 and I have rooted mine the SAME exact way, and its fine. I have tried factory resetting it, but it doesn't work.
PLEASE TELL MY WHY.
EDIT*
I'm trying to do this process in ROM Manager- I also have tried flashing it more than once.

If you can boot up normally, load rom manager (download from market), and go to install alternate recovery, and install any alternate recovery. Then when that is complete, go back and install the Clockwork recovery version you want on top of the alternate.
What happens is SOMETIMES recovery will get messed up while installing, and you'll get exactly that, loop at the HTC screen.
If you cannot reflash an old, then the proper recovery through Rom Manager, you can do it via fastboot with your computer and USB, there are a few guides on the developer forum on how to do that. If you need i can try to dig up the fastboot recovery method guide later... but really, if you can boot up, Rom Manager is your best/easiest bet.
Yeah, I'm trying to do it using ROM Manager. and It still doesnt work. Ive rooted- unrooted and did everything, idk what I'm doing wrong. I tried flashing the new recovery like 4 times, it doesn't work for me. Thanks for the reply!

[Q] How can I restore my original 2.2 FroYo?

I've tried to root my phone, it didn't work, so I want to go back to my 2.2 stock, can anyone describe a quite detailed guide for me? I'd love you forever. =D

explain a bit more what is with your phone, what you did in what state is,rooted or not s-off or not and so on
If you tried rooting your phone through alpharevX but were unable to (that is your phone is not rooted) and now when you try to turn it on it goes into a sort of blocked state showing a phone with a triangle next to it or you want for whatever reason to get your phone back to 'brand new' state (factory settings)..... (beware this will only work if you haven't flashed your phone with some other ROM) all you need to do is turn it back off, then push the volume-down button and the power button (volume button first, then keeping the first still pushed the other)... now go to clear storage (use volume buttons up and down to navigate and the power button to confirm) so push the power button then the volume up button that's it....
Mind you if you have an PC49IMG.zip file on your sd card you are gonna have to delete it before doing this.
Thanks for the replies, but I've managed to instal Cyanogenmod so I don't longer need to go back to FroYo. =)

Lol, own.
Any idea if floating around there is a base ROM for the HTC Wildfire so as to restore to its out-of-box system ROM.
Ideally something I can use from ROM Manager.
I'm asking because twice I've used the stock RUU restore prog and it has un-rooted my HTC Wildfire

Check Safe Flash RUU's in Point 5 of 1st post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
They are untouched stock ROM's, offered as a flashable ZIP.
Problem
I have nearly the exact same situation, except my phone(when turned on) gets stuck at the boot screen(telstra next g) i think i will use the stock 2.2 RUU to get back to the stock un-rooted ROM
I gained S-OFF with alpharevX beta and used gingerbreak to get root. I tried to get into clockwork mod, after using root toolbox to install it, to install cyanogen mod 7 but it would not load. HTC Wildfire, 2.2.1 Froyo,
Did you perform a full wipe before flashing the Cyanogenmod ROM file? Not doing so leads to bootloops, as you have described.
I did not even get to flash cyanogen mod. I cannot get into recovery. I chOose recovery but it goes to fast boot please help
I tried to use the stock RUU for 2.2 but it would not find my device, i tried twice. Once while it was stuck at the boot logo and the second time at the fastboot menu. Please help! I tried a clear data (htc wildfires take on hard reset) and it is still just stuck on the logo
i found a fix! i went into fasboot and ran the RUU on another computer with HTC Sync installed and it worked perfectly! i have now got clockworkmod installed and working excellent!

Stuck in bootloop, unable to get to recovery or get computer to recognize....

Hi all,
My m8 is rooted, with CWM. I was having issues with it, so I decided to wipe it and flash the marshmallow GPE update to see if that would help (since my OTA alert was there). However, it's now stuck in a bootloop, and I can't get into recovery, or get a computer to recognize it.
If I hold the power and volume buttons down, it will restart, I can get the white screen with HTC logo and red writing stating the build is for development purposes only, but after that it goes right to the loading screen again, instead of going into recovery like it normally would (and like it's done a thousand times for me in the past). I'm not the techiest person, but I thought I'd done enough research on this to do it properly.. apparently not I've tried everything I (and google) can think of, but everything seems to rely on getting to recovery to flash a new rom/wipe the cache/etc or hooking it up to a computer, neither of which I can do. Do I have any other options? This is a "new" phone (bought it refurbished from tmobile to replace my old m8 which I also had issues with... obviously a bad choice), and the thought of buying a new phone again just really kills me. Any help would be SO greatly appreciated. Thanks!

One big problem with what you are doing is you are using CWM. That recovery hasn't been maintained in about two years now. It's obsolete. You need to flash the latest TWRP instead. Also, you should make sure your firmware is up to date. You can find that in your bootloader listed under "OS"
Let's get you out of your bootloop first.
Hold down power + vol up until your phone reboots. AS SOON AS THE SCREEN GOES BLACK switch from holding vol up to vol down. This will take you to your bootloader. Check your OS version. It should be 6.xx.xxx.x
Now that you are in bootloader, flash TWRP with fastboot.
When that is done fastboot reboot-bootloader and go to your phone. Navigate to hboot on the bootloader menu, and you will have the option to boot to recovery. Flash the ROM again, and all should be working for you.
Go to this link to get TWRP. The downloads for the M8, and instructions on how to flash it in fastboot are all there for you.
Good luck!

You are a lifesaver! Didn't even think about trying to switch from volume up to down, but that did it.
Ok, so now I have TWRP, but my OS was definitely NOT 6 (it was 4.something). I assume that was one of my issues? Honestly, at this point, I just want to go back to stock lollipop, like I had before.. I bounced around a few stock marshmallow roms before my bootloop (realized I hated GPE, that HTC transfer didn't support my device on those versions, CWM wouldn't restore any of my backups--which now makes sense, etc), so I think I just want to quit messing with it at this point and count my blessings. I've had issues finding stock roms though, obviously. Could you point me in the right direction? I just want stock tmobile lollipop, with sense. I didn't think it'd be so difficult, but I'm clearly not very up-to-date on this stuff. Thanks SO much again!

Okay. 4.xx firmware will actually work with 6.xx ROMs, but I'll instruct you on getting back to stock lollipop.
Backup anything important to you, such as photos and stuff, because this is going to wipe your phone. Don't worry about the apps. Google takes care of that for you. You might lose a little data from the apps, but if you want to be completely stock, this will do it. (you will probably get a prompt to update to Marshmallow via OTA eventually afterwards, but it will be the official stock version of it)
Also, this is assuming that you are T-Mo US, not a European T-Mo version.
Download this RUU onto your PC.
When the download if finished, hook up your phone and get into fastboot. You'll have to re-lock your bootloader first. The command is fastboot oem lock, then fastboot reboot
After you have re-locked your bootloader, double click on the RUU download and follow the prompts.
If there are problems with the RUU flash, try again while booted to bootloader. Sometimes that is needed for some reason.
That's it. You are now on stock T-MoUS 4.20.531.4
Good luck!

Thanks so much. I still have everything backed up from before (well, my CWM nandroid is useless now, but I'll live). I read about the RUUs originally when I was trying to get the stock rom, but some people were saying you had to be S-OFF for them. I'm S-ON--is that a problem?

No it's not a problem, and something that I have already assumed.
If you were S-Off, you wouldn't need to re-lock your bootloader before running the RUU.exe
Those "some people who were saying" are incorrect.

Yeah, people need to stop saying that. Its completely false. RUU is an official HTC recovery tool, and its intended to work on stock (s-on) devices.
You only need s-off to flash RUU as unintended by HTC, such as:
- flash an older version RUU than what is on the phone ("downgrade")
- Change CID/MID to flash another version's RUU
- Flash RUU with unlocked bootloader
- Flash a hacked/unsigned RUU

My phone is stuck on boot screen... How can I turn off the device if my vol+ button does not work?

stock restore won't boot twrp

SOLVED:
I know what I did wrong.
Apparently when I did the second backup, I unticked the wrong "system" partition, or the backup/restore needs both and I only ticked one.
When you backup in TWRP (at least this is the case for the stock ROM), there are two "System" partitions:
System and System Image. One of them contains the actual Android OS I think, and I have no idea what the other one is, only that it has an identical size and so on. For the first backup I made, I did both system partitions, and this seems to have solved the problem.
The second one with the single "system" partition would not boot. It also needs "System Image"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've come up a bit of a croper.
I am bootloader unlocked, after which I flashed the latest TWRP recovery. After this, the first thing I did was back up my stock ROM, as it was.
I then erased the stock rom from the phone and restored it to check it was working. I backed this up to Google Drive. I made another stock backup and then installed Maximus HD and have been on it for a while. After being on a custom ROM for a while, I wanted to go back for a bit just to see if I could feel any difference.
So I wiped the custom ROM, and restored the most recent stock backup image.
Which wouldn't boot.
I've noticed there's a pattern when you turn on the phone. "HTC powered by Android" splash screen, with a dim display. The display brightens briefly, and then dims again before loading the ROM. Reminds me of the PS1 swap disc trick pattern. It speeds up, slows down, speeds up, swap, spins down etc.
Anyway, after restoring the stock image, it got as far as the brighter display before getting stuck there. Have to hold power + vol- for 15 seconds (going by the touch key flashes) when I can then get to download >boot loader > recovery.
Anyone have any ideas why it won't boot? I am s-on, but custom roms install fine regardless of this.
EDIT: Currently downloading the original backup from my Drive to see if that boots.

I have another backup to try, im just waiting for it to download from my google drive now, (11GB takes time, even on a 150mbps connection lol), if that one doesnt work (it did previously) then not sure.
If it does work, I will factory reset it, backup the image and upload that to google drive. I dont know if it would be of use to people here, since it is the rom for the CID H3G_001.
That back up is exactly what I am looking for hope your back up restores and boots looking for ages for a three stock back uo

Hello.
The link is dead for the backup. Have you removed it?
Wrong RUU or device totally bricked?
Hello,
I have problems with Rolling Back the software as I got massive problems under 8.1.
My device is running software number 206 with the branding O2___102 (Germany) and I started the flashing running LO15.
I took the software from here:
handy-faq (dot) de/forum/htc-10-firmware-ruus-otas-backups-stock-recoveries-und-co-t321770/
During this process, they give me always the error back, that the header doesn't fit. Means, I was not even able to flash any TWRP backup for going back to stock!
After flashing the hosd file of the 6.0 O2 RUU, im now not able to access the Downloadmode anymore.
Did I took the wrong software, it was UK branded? And how can I get my Download mode back? Does another TWRP backup help maybe?
Thank you so much for your help!!

Try holding just the volume down button while it's rebooting like that and see if you can get to bootloader.
If not, you may have to wait until it drains itself.
Then once it's dead and done looping, plug into a wall charger.
After its been plugged in for 10-15 minutes, charging in off mode hopefully:
Press and firmly hold down on the volume down key, while holding it down, push one time on the power button.
Do not hold the Power button, but continue holding volume down while device powers on, it should hopefully then go to bootloader.
If you get to that point, you should be able to recover the device.
You can come ask for further help, unless you already know what to do from there...

Hello again,
i did a mistake and cant find a solution for it. Somehow a managed to flash the recovery 3.617xxx but i then realised that i needed a stock recovery of 3.6xx401 because of my Phone CID 034. If i want to start the ota oreo update from stock rec. i get that my phone is pmewl but the ota data pmeuhl so therefore it refuses to flash the ota update. Now can i just flash an older correct stock rec over my currently stock rec which have a higher number ( 3x617xxx) and is obviously not for my cid?

I thought you were going to flash an RUU?
Why didn't that happen?
RUU will place the proper recovery on your phone...and then you're all set for updating.

Yes, i have but then i wanted to restore my old build with Viper10 5.11 it was successfull too, but every time after the phone boots i received a message in dark blue font that my encrypted files are corrupt i need to factory reset my phone. So of course i did it withut thinking after that i loose the rom so i decided to make RUU again. But i couldnt because i was on a higher firmware 3.16x401x to 2.41.401xx but i managed to flash the right stock recovery but im unable to boot up the phone cuz i cant flash or install any RUU under 3.16xxx401 and this came with the eu ota oreo update. So now i cant install RUU 2.41.401 cuz im on 3.16.401 but there are no RUU with version 3.16.401. Im only booting with PureFusion but there i have no radio and i cant s-off while im still on purefusion because the sunshine app refuses it.

So what you are saying, is you are s-on and decided it would be a good idea to update to Oreo firmware, but not Oreo software?
Even though there is an entire thread about how downgrading from Oreo back to Nougat causes loss of radio/baseband...
Not sure I follow the logic here, but that sounds like a whole lot of unnecessary fun that you went through.
If you ARE s-on, you basically have three options at the moment.
One is to go and flash LeeDr0id's Oreo rom.
-OR-
You find and apply a stock system.img and boot.img using Twrp.
-OR-
You use SunShine to gain S-off so that you can revert to Nougat and then apply Oreo or whatever other games you should choose to play.
Best of luck! :good:
Thank you, lately im only making questionable choice , but i didnt see Leedroids Update so im loading it now.
But this was a stressful adventure xD
Have a nice day
