Need some help. Have a work phone that I'd rather not root. Is there any way to get tethering to work after the latest update?? FoxFi worked before but now it is not working (blocked by AT&T). Also, Bluetooth and USB options are a no go because of the lack of permissions on the work laptop to install the pdanet client.
Do I have any other options?? I've looked around and everything seems to point to the answer being that you have to root the device. I was hoping for a non-root solution.
bump.
Anyone? Or is root my only option? I know a non-rooted stock ROM isn't really what XDA is about but I was hoping I would have something to test before having to root a work-owned phone.

So I have installed the Stock OTA 2.2.. that has root access. I have wireless tether for root users 2.0.5 pre 6 it starts up fine however no devices can see it. I was wondering if anyone has gotten this to work on 2.2 with the stock Rom.

i'm not positive, but i have heard both yes and no, and i'm not sure what the difference in setups is between those that have good luck and bad.
i know that cm6 can enable hotspot access (3G) with no problems. perhaps the devs putting out the sense 2.2 can manage to port it over to sense.
So I just attempted to use the wired tethering through FroYo. I got an error 67. Is there a certain thing I am supposed to do to get wired tethering to work through stock FroYo?
Or, do I need to use something like PDANet?

Well, there are several options. If you don't have root, PDANet, EasyTether, etc. are your best (only?) option and require installing a bit of software on the intended computer in addition to the phone; with root, you can additionally use apps like Wired Tether for root users, which should only need to install drivers on the computer.

Thanks. Well, now that 2.2 is rooted, I can just root and get the Wired Tether for root users.
how can you have a mobile hotspot without being rooted and if not possible is any temporary root apps or programs that i can install. Which bring me to this question as well, Is unrevoked a temporary root program?
You can do WIRED Tethering using free apps like PDAnet without being rooted, however free wireless tethering requires rooting.
And there is no "temporary Root." You're either rooted or not. Either way, you CAN unroot if you choose
PDAnet and EasyTether have a trial period of like a month? maybe. After that trial period is over, you can still use the software for USB Tether however you will not be able to connect to secure sites and have to purchase a one time license.

It's easy enough to unroot if you ever need to take the phone in for warranty stuff. Read up and watch some movies on thedroiddemos dot com for more info. Do a good week or more's worth of research before you make your decision. Most of the problems you might run into have been run into before and have been solved or prevented with updates to the things you'll load to the phone.
Good luck!

Z4root is a temporary root app, but unrevoked is not. you could part $30 for tether, not that I would
I temp rooted with visionary v14 and downloaded both barnacle wifi tether and wireless tether and tried both and neither were able to connect to my ubuntu laptop. Both apps said they were broadcasting and has superuser permissions but my laptop couldn't get internet connection.
I assume this has something to do with the stock rom/kernal, but i'd like to know if I can wirelessly tether without getting perm root and flashing a custom rom (don't have the courage to attempt it yet)

Isnt there a stock wifi tether that you dont even need temp root to use?

Flashing a ROM is noob friendly and has great benefits! But that is the only way i know of wifi tethering without your system blocking it. ROMS come stock with a wifi tether setting that works everytime.
I know flashing roms are easy (I'm coming from the g1), but I don't have perm root yet, and id rather not mess with gfree until I have no other option because there are more steps to mess up.
But I guess I'll have to muster up the courage to perm root and flash cm7 or some sense rom.
P.S. does cm7 have fm radio support?

he should be able to tether with temp root as long as the temp root was actually successful... doesn't really have anything to do with custom roms.

yes, CM7 has the fm radio app.
check this thread out. and this one.
for the record, I was able to tether wirelessly on the stock froyo rom (granted, I was permarooted with gfree/rage, but again I don't think this should matter... if you're temp rooted, it should work unless something has changed in the past few months) with the wireless tether app. now I just use the built-in Cyanogen tethering solution.
Thanks guys, I'll try the newer wireless tether app and if that doesn't work I'll try gfree perm rooting.

It turns out all I had to do was get a new version of Wireless Tether to get it to work. I was using the old 2.0.2 version from my G1, so I updated to the 2.0.7 version.
I like the current version of touchwiz.. so I don't mind staying with it
I do however want WiFi Tether... can I get it to work on Stock Rooted or do I need a different Rom for it? If I do I haven't been here in a couple of month and Im really don't know what's the most stable Roms and which ones look similar to Touchwiz and that support WiFi Tether
Can someone please help??
Also.. any easy way to root using a MAC?? I remember witht he EPIC 4G to be a nightmare rooting a device using a MAC computer
I don't know about using macs, but you will need to root then flash a .zip in recovery to get tethering working. A lot of custom roms will have that feature already enabled.
If you're looking for TouchWiz roms, just look for ones over 1gb
The smaller ones won't be tw.
you may need busybox installed. But that should be must have if rooted anyway.
beyond that, it's just trial and error with the WiFi Tether settings. I suggest using Reload Driver 2.
I recently purchased a new GN2 and had to re root. I enjoy stock Touchwiz so i tried this exact thing.
Rooted using the guide at galaxynote2root.com
Installed the Trev-E wifi tether app and it works fine.
Since I'm stock with no potential Sprint spyware removed I also installed Hotspot Shield VPN and run that prior to tethering (may not really make a difference)
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Download the MC2 rooted nodata, flash through Heimdall and then get the Trev-E Wifi Tether app.
Has everything you need.
