I've been looking for an AOSP style replacement for the stock Sense 6 "Messages" app. I've found that Slide SMS is the best solution. However, for some reason I am unable to use synced Facebook photos as contact images.
Contacts that I have messaged show up as blank (no photo) contacts even though when I press on the empty photo it brings up their "people" details WITH both Google and Facebook photos.
Is this just an issue with Sense or is there some solution that I am overlooking?

Hi,
I recently started using the HTC contacts widget and already hit trouble.
I did a search for anything related to "contacts" and "widget" but I found no threads describing this problem.
- I have all my contacts stored as Google contacts (with photos). Some of my contacts have their facebook account linked to them.
- Photos I selected for ALL my contacts are Google photos.
- I created a new group (called Speed Dial) and included all the people I wanted to show in the contacts widget.
And now for the problem... I added about 10 people to the widget, some of them have a facebook account linked some of them don't. When I first added them all the appropriate Google photos were shown (although they were blurry but I could live with that).
However, anytime I sync my contacts or restart the phone ALL the photos are reset to Facebook photos. Not only for the contacts included in contacts widget but for ALL contacts that have a facebook account linked to them.
Is this a bug, a feature or just me being stupid and missing some fundamentals?
Does anyone have a tip or an advice?
Any help is appreciated.

Is there a nice, good looking contacts widget for Desire? What do you guys use?
I've experienced the same and would prefer the photo I choose to appear instead of the facebook one. A friend of mine has his cat as his facebook contact photo and this keeps coming up on my phone. If anyone has some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
I just flashed Cyanogen and so far it seems awesome, but is there an easy way to import people's facebook pictures to use for my contacts like sense has?
Also, is there a way to get sprint's visual voicemail working on it?

facebook and twitter are syncing with contacts in cm6 now, not sure about the contact pictures. i haven't really tested it out.
contacts sync works in cm6...works fine on mine. works the best if you do first and last names in your contacts, it makes it earier for the facebook program to match the contacts

Do you have facebook contacts appearing in your contacts, and linking with regular contacts?
If for some reason a contact is using a different image than facebook, open that contact and scroll to the area of the contact with the facebook data, if you click on the picture from facebook it will prompt you to use that image
Anyway to link contacts. Every time I use a CM Rom, I end up with 600 contacts most of them doubles. One being a FB contact and the other being the actual contact stored in the Google Cloud. I love the roms, but this is very upsetting.
Yes you can link your Facebook contacts. First go into your Facebook app, hit menu and you should be able to sync Facebook.contacts.
From there, go to your contacts, select a contact, hit menu to edit contact, and you should see an option to 'join' - this will let you link your contact to their Facebook profile. Also, after linking the contact, you can choose to use their Facebook photo or leave it on their default photo if you have one.assigned.

you can only do this in a sense rom. with cm6 and facebook you can only choose to sync all fb contacts or sync only existing contacts

I just noticed that my phone won't let me chose the Google contact photo. When I pick a contact then chose edit and go to pick a photo all I get is gallery and camera.... no option for Google. When I check my gmail contacts the photo is there. If I have the contact as a Facebook friend that photo will show. But not all of my contacts are on facebook... any ideas? I'm running the stock deodexed 3.28 Rom with root access and it use to work

As we all know the unresolved low resolution contact photos bug still exists in Android, even after 2+ years. By this I mean if you sync your contacts with Google then you only get the 75x75 pixel contact photo show up when you call/get called by someone, all pixellated and horrible.
I found a workaround for this somewhere on XDA which works - create a new "phone" contact with a nice high res pic for each person, and then link it to your Google contact, selecting the high res picture as the default.
Unfortunately I didn't set up my Facebook for Sense yet. If I do this now, will the phone overwrite my preference for the "phone contact" picture with a Facebook picture? Meaning I would have to go through each contact again, selecting the "phone contact" pic? I don't have time to go through all these again, I'd rather not bother with Facebook for Sense...
I don't know for sure, since my Facebook for Sense is all setup, but I'm pretty sure it will overwrite it when you sync with it, yes. I changed some of my contact pictures from their Facebook pics to some other ones, but next time I sync'd Facebook it went back to the Facebook pics.
I got my DHD for Xmas, and the snafu with the photos is unbelievable.
Not only my phone WON'T remember that I have chosen a mobile/google photo for a contact, and instead reverts to fB, but also the fact that it uses a low-res pic is not simply a bug - it's idiotic. The funny thing is that for a while, at least for a specific contact, it kept a nice high-res photo...

Until now I was running a sense rom where I had all my contacts linked to their facebook profile so they all show their facebook pictures.
All my contacts are sync with google and so for all of them, if I look at them in gmail, there's a note like this :
<HTCData><Facebook>id:63xxx4/friendof:21xxx95</Facebook></HTCData>
Last week, I switched to a non-sense rom. When I synced my contacts from gmail to the stock android contact list, some of them displayed the facebook picture, and some of them did not, despite having the link showed above.
Also, when in gmail, if I look at my contacts, only some of them display the picture from htc sense, of course, these are the one which display a picture when I sync them with android. How come don't they all get the picture from sense?
Do you know why it works with only a few of them?
Is there a way I can have all my contacts display their facebook picture?

to sync contacts with fb on aosp rom, i think the contact has to have the exact same name in your contacts as there display name on fb

As said, the names have to be exact. If not, you can just edit the contact and 'join' them to the FB app...it's quite easy tbh
open contact -> press menu -> edit contact -> press menu -> join
