I was quite excited as I am using a really ****ty phone, but upon starting the phone I realized it was on the sprint network, which gets very unreliable service where I live.
My main question is, is this phone, the LG Optimus G for sprint, capable of switching over to another phone carrier? Preferably Verizon prepaid or Straight Talk as they both work extremely well in my location. If it is, do I need to root the phone? The last phone I rooted with a Motorola Triumph on Virgin Wireless, and it was beyond easy.
I have also called both providers, Verizon and Straight Talk, both were very unhelpful
If its not usable, the phone is for sale to the first person with 75$ in the four corners area, usa.

thanks for the quick response though.
Technically you could if you had a donar phone to flash but no 4g lte though.

Not entirely true unless the Optimus has something holding it back.
There was a thread about the same question (and a sim card question) here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771111
I tried Straight Talk's website and was almost able to activate my own Optimus G on their service. I linked the website in that thread ^^

Hey Xda
I was wondering if its possible to flash the Verizon galaxy nexus to Sprint since they both use LTE. Would it be as easy as flashing the stock firmware for the sprint version or would more (complex) work be needed on the software side including the bootloader etc to get it running on sprint.
Also in theory if there were no carrier restrictions on this device would a T-Mobile micro sim work on the Device even if its at 2G speeds?
Reason being is I've figured out that Verizon is not the right carrier to support my habbit of switching phones every other month. I'm thinking about getting the T-Mobile sim only plan which is cheaper even though I get an employment discount for Verizon since I worked for Staples.

No, it will not work. Even if Sprint accepted devices with ESN's they don't personally sell (they don't), there's no way to flash the VZW model to work on Sprint. Not to mention that Sprint doesn't exactly make their LTE SIMs regularly available, as they're embedded in their devices.

No, you will negatively affect your device by intentionally trying to flash the wrong firmware. Possibly bricking it (though not likely, its not worth trying).

The Verizon (or Sprint) Galaxy Nexus does not have a GSM radio. Just because it has a SIM doesn't mean its compatible with the other network.

Well, sorry you made a bad choice for your habits, but this was all easily available information before you chose to sign up with them. Sell your phone and pick up the GSM model ($399 brand new, less used) and you can easily use it on T-Mobile.
well good thing you like to change phones every month just wait till this month is over and then get a phone that can be used for sprint/t-mobile...simple
Yea. Ive decided to terminate my verizon contract and sell my verizon Gnex
im considering the hspa+ Gnex or Tmobile s3 as my two choices for the t mobile monthly 4G plan.
Thanks anyway.
After 12 days with my Optimus G, I took it back to Sprint and cancelled my service. It was shame. I LOVED the phone. Unfortunately, Sprint's service is just terrible where I live. They over-nighted an airrave to me so I could have reliable voice service at home, but often when I was out and about in my neighborhood, the service was spotty. I could rarely get a 4G signal. When I did, it was a little slower than the HSPA+ signal on my AT&T phone. When I had their 3G, it was 1/10th the speed. I stayed with AT&T and upgraded to the HTC One X Plus. LTE speeds are 2-3 times the HSPA+ speeds I was getting. I'm very happy with the service and because I'm a long time customer AT&T gave me the HOX+ for $150 and free activation when the phone is $199 on their website. The HOX+ was the only phone AT&T has with specs that are close to the Optimus G, but the Optimus G is faster, has a better screen, and has a better UI than Sense. The only real improvement on the HOX+ is the 64gb of storage. One of the things that I really miss from the Optimus is the Quick Memo app. It doesn't appear to be in standalone development anymore. You can't buy it on play. I've found some older versions that don't have the screen shot integration. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me the apk for it. I've tried three times to download a zip file of system apps from the AT&T Optimus G, but the download starts very slow and then gives me a network timeout after a few minutes.

I was thinking this too... I was trying to decide between this and the One X+.
Did you just not know about when you got the X+?
But I had a similar experience with an Evo Shift.
My family all has AT&T and then my mom got a work phone on Sprint.
She had pretty weak cell reception at home and couldn't get a data connection on Sprint, while AT&T had pretty good coverage.

I get the "app not installed" error when I try to install quick memo. Damn.
I was iffy on the Sprint Optimus G because of its 32 GB of storage limit. I was coming from a 64 GB Iphone. There's no way I could live with less than 64 gb of storage without reliable, unlimited data. Sprint's unlimited data is why I was willing to downgrade on storage. The HOX+ is a good phone. I just liked the Optimus G a little better. If AT&T would give me unlimited 4G data, I'd have probably gone with the Optimus G here, too.

Just a suggestion if you are rooted, try copying the apk to the system/app directory (or data/app I guess), set permissions to the same as everything else.
Reboot.

That would really help a lot of people.(maybe)
E980 from eBay; unlocked with number code (no data service on T-Mobile at this point-only phone); rooted with XDA instructions-verified with Joey Krim’s Root Checker basic; installed SuperSU; installed ASTRO file manager pro (had it from prior phone) - could not access Build Prop file so installed Joey Krim’s Build Prop Editor; as per XDA instructions changed ro.radio.networkmode=disable to ro.radio.networkmode=enable (and SAVED!!!). Opened “Settings”; “Networks”; “Tethering and Networks”; “Mobile Networks” (which now shows “Network Mode” which I entered and selected “GSM/WCMDMA/LTE auto”; then went down to “Network Operators” and opened and checked “automatic”. After booting there was no change in data access and I figured out problem was with APN (“Access Point Names”) settings - went to uTube for "MMS/APN settings for HTC Inspire T-MOBILE " and using pause button got the APN data needed. Went back to “Mobile Networks” page and clicked on “Access Point Names” which opens a blank page. Clicked on the lower right “Menu” button which opens small window at bottom with two options-pick the “New APN” which opens the full page for entry of the uTube data (I did not find on this E980 a place to enter “MMS Protocol:WAP 2.0"). Rebooted and data service appeared. The data service was “E” (Edge apparently) but I live on Mexican border and no LTE yet nor has T-Mobile apparently switched their “4G” to 1900 band. I will investigate with T-Mobile support how, if possible in this market, to move up the data food chain. My prior phones were Palm Treos then HTC G2 and RAZORs for landline replacement with PhoneLynx devices.
LG says without hardware flash no possibility (if at all) of 4g operation and not sure will work now with LTE from T-Mobile (not in my area yet). T-Mobile support says G Pro is not in their system yet. Amazing to me that all phone manufacturers do not have frequency agile products - my 12 year old RTI TV remote handles multiple frequencies and IR. LG support would not comment on Key Lime Pie . . .
I feel bad for users of other carriers who can't get the G Pro. Its stupid how LG makes it exclusive on AT&T than does little to nothing to market it. LG is just hurting the sales potential of the device by not making it more available in the US market.
I agree. Although it has been confirmed that this device will work and get T-Mobile 4G and LTE. I dont understand why T-Mobile won't market this phone. Its clearly a Note 2 beater in every aspect.

LG reminds me of Commodore back in the 1980s: GREAT products, but not a clue how to market them. The OG Pro has a big H/W advantage over the Galaxy Note II and a larger screen (with less bloatware) than either the HTC One or S4; LG should be running comparison ads non-stop. What do we get instead? Almost nothing.

Okay I understand that the bootloader is currently locke but assuming it gets unlocked would it be possible to flash a custom modem to create support for tmobile 4g in un-refarmed areas? something like they did for the note one?
How does The LG Pro G work on T-Mobile? I live in a re-farmed area and am thinking of switching to the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan.I have the chance to get a Pro G for $49,my plan was to get it,unlock it and use it on T-Mobile.

Probably not. What helped the Note in this regard was it's similarity to the Galaxy S2 hardware, and then T-Mobile release the Note on their network. T-Mobile doesn't carry any LG devices with even remotely similar hardware.
Have people been able to unlock phones that were previously locked? I'm assuming so, since I have seen unlocked ATT Phones. I want to buy one on eBay and then get an unlock code, but wanted to make sure it was possible first. I'm switching from the Note II. I love Samsung, but hate the Camera...
4G and LTE Works on T-Mobile
I was digging around in the not so secret.....secret menu and experimenting with options and found that you can simply activate the 4G and LTE on the Optimus G Pro. I will post a few screenshots of the home screen and of some speed tests for your amazement.......
You can access the LG menu by entering 3845#*980#
I'm not responsible if you blow your phone up....please be careful.
I'm using the ATT Lg Optimus G Pro here in Canada with my Rogers carrier and get full LTE speeds just by adding Rogers LTE APN settings. this would be the same for Bell or Telus. I have to say trading my s4 for this device was a smart move! Ya sure no dev support because of locked bootloader, I'm sure eventually that will change

I have a question for you, I purchased the at&t lg optimus prime g, I took it to a metro store and I bought a sim card, talk and text seem to work fine, but I don't get any data. Did you do anything to get the phone to work, other than just inserting the SIM card? I was thinking the APNs were still set as the at&t apns and that is why I'm not getting anything. Thank you in advance.

Yes it`s the APN`s stopping you from getting data. You will need to obtain them. Also depending on your area you may or may NOT get 3G as since MetroPCS is now T-Mobile this phone does NOT fully support T-Mobile`s 3G/4G HSPA+ bands. you will only get 3G/4G HSPA+ in refarmed areas.

Not to bring an old post back from the dead but... Are you still on Metro PCS? If so, how are you liking the LTE coverage? Currently I'm on T-Mobile and thinking of switching to Metro's unlimited LTE for $60 a month. Save me about $13.00 a month.
LTE or Not LTE
My wife one night left her phone with me and in this location it showed 4gLTE I hadnt bothered since I unlocked and rooted it we use Metro i put an early version of cyanogen on it and mine is a twin in blue with nightlies I only get the hspa* not the 4gLTE what am I doing wrong?
I just switched from PTel Mobile to MetroPCS. Both carriers are using T-Mobile network, on a secondary degree of importance or something like that.
Originally my LG OGP was activated on ATT, then switched to PTel Mobile and on both carriers got 4G LTE with no problems whatsoever. Now on MetroPCS the best it can do is EDGE and when I open the internet Browser, loses all signals (even phone capabilities) and have to restart phone in order to make phone calls again.
APN settings are as depicted on the post above, and calls and texts work well. The problem is the internet, or the lack of it.
Anyone have had problems like this? Any solution?
(the lady on MetroPCS was not of any help. She just keep complaining about my LG being a piece of S... and that I should buy a new phone from them)
Why did Sprint take out the required software for the phone to be and to pick up LTE with the other carriers?
Because they don't want you to. Actually, there's only one phonr that has world LTE. The new oppo. Coincidentally, no US carrier sells it.

But you can use both T-Mobile and ATT and pick each others LTE and with the Verizon you can use Paranoid Android or T Mobile ROM and it'll pick the LTE ... So why not Sprint?
Sprint has a unique triband LTE now also. Though since it didn't ship with that active I don't know if that's responsible....

I think they didn't offer the same bans as the other variant phones.
You already answered the question yourself. With Verizon phone, you can use PA to get access to T-Mobile LTE. Which means one of two things. Either 1> You can use PA on Sprint to get access to T-Mobile LTE, or 2> It isn't a software issue, it's a hardware issue. I'll let you guess which it is.
