[q] can i return to stock? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I just bought a Galaxy S3 from someone and it was already rooted. I am not able to add this phone to my Sprint account because of it. SO I looked up threads on returning the phone to stock and they all say if you have this new update you cannot go back to stock because of this knox warranty and warranty. When I loaded the boot screen thing it says warranty: 0. Or something like that.
So is there a way I can revert back to stock and UNroot my phone??

The phone being rooted has nothing to do with activating the phone with Sprint.
If you mean by boot screen download/bootloader mode and you see warranty bit 0, sounds like you already have kitkat (with knox).
Go into settings\about phone and see what your android version is.
And yes you can go back to stock un-rooted.
Get back about your version of android and then you can go from there.

I have version 4.4.2.
The reason I believe this is the reason I cannot activate for Sprint is because I sold a rooted phone to a friend and they could not activate it. I got the phone and unrooted it back to stock and it was able to be put on their account.
But yeah, I think it will work after I am able to unroot it. I'm just nervous bc all of the threads I have found have a warning telling me not to use their method if I have that Knox Warranty in the bootscreen. They said it will hard brick. But most of those threads are from a few years ago. I guess because it's an older phone.
If you could find me a method to return it to stock / unroot I'd appreciate it so much.

That's a new one on me.

I've never heard of root being the cause of activation problems. As long as you are on a tw rom it should work. A quick search would have given you this though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738533

Ok,
First go download Holo Backup. Extract the folder in the zip file to your desktop:
Get it Here:
http://omegavesko.github.io/SimpleADBBackup/
It's a self contained ADB solution for backing up your apps etc. Instructions are on the web page. Pretty simple really. Make a backup(s) and store it in the Holo folder on your desktop.
Then as metalfan78 said, go and get DR CDMA's stock tar file. You will Odin that after you back up.
Get it Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738533
It will restore you completely to stock, un-rooted with stock recovery.
Then use Holo backup to restore.
Thats it.

Does Holo backup work good? I have only used titanium backup for the past 5 years.

Well, I use TiBu exclusively but I wanted to have an alternative incase something went wrong. So just before I finally moved to ND8 I gave it a try and it worked perfectly.

Nice, I'll have to give it a try sometime.

Just note, when you Odin the ND8 tar, it'll wipe your internal storage (not your microSD), so if you've saved any pictures or downloads to the internal storage, copy them to your SD and / or PC / cloud.

HEY GUYS IT WORKED!
I'm not sure if my phone had a custom rom on it from the previous owner or what. It's an almost brand new phone, no scratches or anything. But my last phone did this same thing only it was easier to find the file to un-root. I want to say it's a Samsung thing... but that could be false. My last phone was a Samsung Epic.
But anywayyy. You guys solved my problem 100% and I appreciate you guys taking the time to help me. XDA is the best. I come here for most everything.
THANK YOU.

I bought a phone from a friend and called Sprint Customer Care to make sure it wasn't lost/stolen. It wasn't but they still weren't able to activate it because they said my device wasn't supported by Sprint and was not a Sprint device. (It definitely was. It had a Sprint model #, Said Sprint when I booted up, and said Sprint on the back of my phone)
I tinkered with my phone and realized it was Un-rooted by being able to go into Odin download mode. You can go into download mode by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key. If it works you are rooted. There may be other ways to check, but that's how I did it.
I was having trouble un-rooting my phone because many threads I came across said I couldn't Un-root my device with their method if I had Knox Warranty on my phone. Their methods were for older android versions. (They said it will brick my device if I did it that way.)
You can figure this out by going into download mode by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key. If your device says Knox Warranty or Warranty Bit on the screen then you have the update. SO USE THIS METHOD TO UNROOT / RETURN TO STOCK.
I asked XDA and they gave me this handy little website that allows you to un-root and return to stock with instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738533

The only other problem I ran into while using this method is downloading the .tar.md5 file. The website wouldn't load the Captcha for me to enter to begin the download. So I looked around and the other one I found was downloading WAY too slow.
SO I found and used this one: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23487008491966461
It worked perfect.
Instructions:
1. Extract Download file
2. Put phone into download mode (power off, then power button + Volume Down + Home Button (website didn't mention holding the home button but you have to with the S3), then volume up when prompted)
3. Open Odin (right click > open as administrator)
4. Load File L710VPUCND8_L710SPRCND8_L710VPUCND8_HOME.tar.md5 into the PDA slot
5. Start flashing
6. Grab some popcorn because it will take a while

The only thing they forgot to mention and it left my phone stuck on the Samsung boot screen is you must go into Recovery Mode (power off, then Power button + Home + Volume up) and CLEAR THE CACHE.
Reboot your device
Once it boots up call Sprint or talk to a representative online to activate your device and they will walk you through it.
VOILA, YOU ARE GOOD TO GO.

Just so you know, you can get into download mode whether you're rooted or not, being rooted has nothing to do with being able to boot into download mode

Glad you got it all sorted. I figured that's all you needed.
It doesn't always get stuck like that for everyone. That's a generally good way to fix that kind of problem any time it does happen, though.

Will this also work on Android version 4.3?
I have 4.3 with Knox and have rooted my phone and also have loaded Philz Touch 6 (CWM Base Version: V6.0.4.5).
I've attached a screen shot of my complete phone info. I would like to return to stock and upgrade to 4.4.
Thanks!

Yes, it will work. The tar link is the 4.4 stock tar. Just backup using holo, or backup of your choice, flash the tar, then philz, reroot, profit

Note 2 stuck on Samsung Logo

Couldnt find threads related to my specific device so i made it.
After installing a custom rom on my tmobile gn2 (hyperdroid pegasus) i realized that my SIM card wasnt being detected. Having run into this problem before i decided to use the gn2 toolkit to re-flash a stock rom and start from scratch, which worked and allowed my sim card to be detected use my mobile network (TMOBILE USA)
Only after installing hyperdroid and trying to reflash the stock rom, the custom hyperdroid rom would stay on the device after multiple attempts! Being clever, i decided to download and reflash the rom using ODIN only in download mode which worked and now the device is running the Samsung Official build branded with tmobile but will not boot past the samsung logo (one of two that i see appear upon boot)
Looking at a thread for the original Note 1, do i assume correctly that my phone is now bricked? If so, anyone else know of an absolute md5/tar image i can use that can get me back to factory out of the box, i bought this phone unsubsidized over the iphone5 because i wanted something that woulc pack a wallop. Now im just walloping myself for wasting not just 100 dollars more but 750 dollars on a device, running an os, being supported by everyone who wants their hands on it, in a community that will chew you out if you ask incorrectly.
So im whining yes but i could use some advice. Sure im a noob but so were you once, all i reall ask for is some compassion. thanks...

I cannot begin to explain this ordeal i had with my note 2. Thanks for the replies as of this point however, actually directions that i took in figuring it all out and getting my phone back to factory defaults...
So to elaborate, my N2 has been rooted for a few days and i decided to install a custom ROM, which disabled or didn't support my SIM. Trying to undo the flash and go back to a ROM i was using via ROM manager, i realized it could not be undone. Every time i tired to reflash a(ny) zip from my device using rom manager i was still booting with the custom malfunctioning rom (Hyperdroid Pegasus)
After realizing that i couldn't undo the flash of the custom rom via ROM manager, the galaxy note 2 toolkit or via ODIN straight up, i somehow ended up bricking my phone using an image i got off of samsung-updates (which i downloaded using the galaxy n2 toolkit). In bricking i mean it would power on and boot into the samsung whirlpool, then the tmobile 4g accelerated android, and then to a glowing samsung logo and didn't progress from there.
Doing some research i noticed that there was a more recent image version for my specific device (jan 5 2013) downloaded it and gave that a try, flashed it via ODIN (because by the time it was bricked Download mode / Odin mode and ODIN 3.07 for windows was my only available option!) and launched up my gn2... ONLY to find it booting to the animations and then looping them! WTF?!
So more research and i got to a recovery mode, wiped my data and finally voila. (Even samsung support couldn't support this...)
No discredit to the Hyperdroid Rom, I'm sure it works for a lot of people out there but i guess it doesn't like my tmobile note 2 sgh-t889.
I just hoped if anyone else ran into the same problem, download the image from samsung-updates.com, the latest of course! Then, (if you can boot into download mode that is) use ODIN (i used version 3.07) to load the image you got off samsung-updates (OSM will take more or less 5 minutes to check the md5 package so don't panic)
If your lucky you shouldn't have to do anything else, but if you get into a weird situation when you can't get past the boot animation screens, boot into recovery mode (which i THINK is hold down UP, POWER, AND THE HOME KEY as it powers up) and select to CLEAR WIPE DATA or FACTORY RESET.
Hopefully after wiping you should have successfully re-flashed a "bricked" galaxy note 2 that won't boot past the animation screens.
Thanks for reading! Im here to answer any questions or help, maybe i won't play with custom rome anymore but id sure like to start building my own!

To both you guys, i just want to say i elaborated on your answers for the benefit of helping someone like me who craves detail. No offense to you guys, but i was racketing with Samsung about this and driving their people nuts! the solution had came to me before i saw your replies so I'm just glad i took the right path in it all and i guess i admit i lost faith in XDA for a second there. anyways :good:
So wait, in all that flashing and reflashing and messing with Odin, you hadn't done a factory reset yet? Isn't that the first step almost any ROM dev(or even any normal flashoholic on these forums) will tell you to take?

Lol, funny picture. Yes i almost lost faith but obviously you guys came through. I am one of 4 million people who did or didnt follow the rules but thats a good thing, i think the tmobile jellybean community needs as much help as it can get right now and if it takes making a tiny mistake good for us.
actually shinkinrui, i wasnt sure if you were trying to troll me or trying to remind me that this forum is for the leet and the leet only. I understand the work devs go through, but its still a community that needs to thrive, not be put off or put down.
Neither, actually. I was annoyed at the implication that it was this community's fault you went through your ordeal. Like someone blaming their cable company for their cable not working when they just didn't change the input on their TV.
And my post didn't insult you, it pointed out your mistake. Big difference
Thanks !!!

[ROM][D802]80220B EUR Open KITKAT Flashable ZIP With Custom Recovery Working!

This is only what has worked for me i take no responsibility for anyones phone catching fire after following my guide/advice. Tested myself on a UK D802 16GB on Three Network! Confirmed working on 32GB devices now too!!
This needs formatting to make it easier to read. I will get around to it but here is the basic info needed!
Please READ this entire first post before asking questions that are already answered.
Today i have managed to flash the European Open Kitkat rom and root it and keep TWRP recovery. It worked for me but can't guarantee the same results for you.
Prerequisites. (Skip this if you already have rooted JB rom with custom recovery)
First i downgraded to Jellybean using this guide. I downgraded to "UK Open 16GB D80210B_00.kdz" i'm not sure if that's required though.
Then I rooted it using IORoot.
Then i installed TWRP using Freegee from the Play Store.
From here you are ready to flash or you can start from here if you already have root and recovery on Jellybean.
You need these three files.
1. My modded Stock rom zip.
Mirror 1 | Mirror 2
2. Savoca Modded Boot.img.
3. SuperSU ZIP.
Now to flash! (Take out your simcard first.)
1. Boot into TWRP and flash the modded stock rom DOWNLOAD 1. It will take a while and the screen may turn off during this, just press power button. Ignore the failed error!
2. Now go to main TWRP screen and select Reboot Recovery. (Wouldn't mount system otherwise!)
3. Now go to Mount and make sure System is ticked. (Not sure if required but do it anyway!)
4. Now flash Savoca's modified boot.img DOWNLOAD 2.
5. Again go to Mount and make sure System is selected.
6. Now flash SuperSU ZIP DOWNLOAD 3.
7. Now i wiped data here not sure if it's required as the rom wipes system but do it anyway!
8. Replace sim and reboot and all should be well!
If you have NO MOBILE NETWORK i got this error and that's why i recommended removing sim card. I had to repeatedly toggle wifi on and off, and airplane mode and restarted a few times. Not sure what fixed it but don't panic it DOES work.
Bugs and Fixes!
Audio Hissing/Crackling on Headphones.
This is present on all Kitkat roms currently. Some users don't get it most do. Type of headphones seems to be a factor. The following fix is temporary and will revert after a reboot. So needs to be repeated if your phones reboots for any reason.
Type in phone dial pad 3845#*802# and it will show Hidden Service Menu.
Click on "ELT Test", select "Manual Mode" and select "Test Start".
With headphones plugged in select "Audio Loopback" and than select "Test Start".
Blow gently into the microphone and keep on this test 20 seconds or more.
Once done back out and play music. Enjoy!
No LTE/4G anymore?
It seems to require a change of bands for some to get LTE working. There is a value to edit in build.prop. You can do this manually with a root explorer and setting correct permissions after changing, I've found the easiest way is to download JRummy Build.prop editor from market.
Open the Build Prop Editor app.
Find the value "ro.telephony.default_network" and select it.
Notice the property value will be set to "9". Change this to "11" and let the app reboot phone.
If you still don't have LTE try again but change the value to "13" and let the app reboot phone.
Bluetooth Battery Drain
This is NOT real battery drain so please don't worry about it. It is a falsely reported statistic. I get battery life on a par with 4.2.2. Around 8 hours screen on time which is fantastic! If you have battery drain please try a full wipe, don't restore apps from another rom do it manually. Take a look at your apps.
How is it done?!
The modded zip is stripped down to include only the System, Modem and Cust partitions. These are all that is required for Kitkat to play nice with Savocas modified boot.img. I edited the updater-script to remove the entries for all partitions except those listed above and repacked it up nicely to flash. So it is possible to do this with any future updates too. The Cust partition is necessary in case your partition has old carrier stuff still on there, this flashes a clean Cust partition.
Thanks to:
LenAsh for the flashable zip i modded.
Savoca for the modded Boot.img and modules.
Chainfire for SuperSU.
Jesus for blessing all the little children.

As i've said it seems like there isn't a difference between md5's of 32gb and 16gb versions of Kitkat i just wouldn't want to say test it... But in theory it should work just fine.

Let me know how it goes...you know just to give me a running start I assume you're 16GB user? It doesn't take long to boot but if it loops make sure you have wiped data in recovery. It is safe to do factory reset in standard recovery too as i tried it when trying to get my network back on!

I'm preparing a dead fish to throw it on your doormat ;p
I'm on 12th minute of booting - LG logo and led flashing green-to-blue.
And yes I'm 16GB
How to use the standard recovery ?
Is it repeatedly making the boot sound? Hold power button and volume down until LG logo flashes up, then release power button and press again whilst keeping hold of volume. You should get a white screen. Just press power twice i think that should reset it.
I'm pretty sure it didn't take me 12 minutes to boot

I'm guessing there is some sort of tool to extract the KDZ files and then all you need out of that is system.img and modem.bin and cust.bin... Easy to make an update script or i can upload one for you. I've never needed to extract a KDZ though...

Is it repeatedly making the boot sound? Hold power button and volume down until LG logo flashes up, then release power button and press again whilst keeping hold of volume. You should get a white screen. Just press power twice i think that should reset it.
I'm pretty sure it didn't take me 12 minutes to boot

Doing that boots the TWRP. i've wiped the data like a satan, in every possible way. There's no boot loop - it's just booting and booting and booting. I think I'll have to go back to stock and repeat. Or is there any way to upload files to the phone through recovery (I remeber there was this option in clokcwork recovery ) ?

I'm not sure if there is an option in TWRP i've certainly not seen it. I find it strange that you are getting stuck at boot screen... Maybe it matter which JB rom you come from?
My original one was 80210B Euro open rom.

Thanks, I found this guide but it doesn't mention the download from Savoca. Should I just follow it (and use the KKROM_template.zip)? Or what do you recommend? I really can't to flash KK with root on my device

The starting rom is the only thing i can think of that could make a difference if you followed instructions exactly all the factors are the same besides that!
It would help if anyone else has downloaded it and flashed successfully or unsuccessfully to let us know!

That guide will give you a rooted Kitkat rom but no custom recovery. Which is a risky position to be in
Although the tool would be useful in that thread it would allow you to get the system.img, modem.bin and cust.bin you need. I could then provide a blank update zip with just the correct updater-script for you?

I would very much appreciate that. I have used the tool to extract the kdz and dz. I have the files in screenshot now.
Whats the proper next step?
Thanks for your help
edit: The meta-inf folder is from the KK template provided in that thread, I suppose I don't need that.
Hi!
Firstly thanks for this!
and secondly i have to say that i already flashed to my LG G2 32gb and works like a charm... btw i also did it with another way:
1-Downgrade to 4.2.2.
2-when your in v.4.2.2 root and recovery.
3-i used lastest CWM version from Philz.
4-FLash your Rom.zip
5-reboot to recovery. (Dunno if this is really necessary but just in case i did it too)
6-Flash Savoca Patched
7-Flash Root
8-Reboot
9-ENjoy EUR 20b =)
Thanks!
Great to confirm working on 32gb too. Badchip you might have to wait til later unless you can use that existing meta inf folder. I've just left for work so not at laptop.
Try deleting every file but only keep.
Meta inf folder.
System.IMG
Modem.bin
Custom.bin
Zip those up and flash them. Should work if the update script is right in meta inf folder.
@iall5tar What base jellybean rom did you downgrade to?
And regarding custom recovery it should work with any cwm philz or twrp. I just referenced twrp as that's what I use.

What you mean about folder meta-inf? im not a expert i just want to give a try and it worked xD

[Q] upgrade path for stock rooted 4.1.2 L710VPBMC3

My Sprint GS3 is on 4.1.2 MC3 with root. It is the 32GB version with a 64GB external. Without a 32GB GS5 on the horizon from Sprint I want to upgrade this phone. Each time I come to xda I read for hours then bail on the upgrade. I work for myself and do not need to interface with any work related networks or email, so apparently I have no need for KNOX. Do I need to fear the new bootloader?
Should I find a path to upgrade to 4.3 without KNOX or just go ahead with the recent near stock (KNOX-free) ROM? I don't have time to play with other custom ROM's but want root and free wifi tether, along with the ability to remove bloat.
The various ROM threads are generally over a hundred pages of posts and I also do not have time to read through an entire thread before taking action. Can someone point me to a good near Stock rooted ROM?
Thanks for helping me decide an ROM upgrade path.
Dunbar
I don't know if we have a tar of the latest stock 32GB compatible ROM. I know some have used Odin and a PIT file made for a 32GB variant to Odin the latest stock ND8 (TouchWiz 4.4.2) tar.
Odining the 16GB tar on a 32GB phone without the PIT file will make it into a 16GB phone.
The 32GB tar might be available somewhere, but I don't think it is on XDA.
Then you could flash @CNexus' stock but rooted ROM available in the development (non-original) section.

You have given me more research, and thank you as it looks like without it I could have wound up with half my memory. Off to find the PIT file and more knowledge.
[Edit] > searched for PIT file as well as combinations of 32GB in the Development forum to no avail. I'll go to a custom ROM if I have to in order to keep my internal 32GB. I am still at a loss for an upgrade path. I see that there might be a 4.3 variant that pre-dates KNOX but it is rumored to be an international version which is apparently to be avoided. I don't care about warranty etc so should I really only look at the latest 4.4.2 ROM that has what I want? Basically stock rooted hotspot with the ability to delete bloat including non-needed KNOX apps.
I need a Senior Member who can act as a guide and help me decide what to flash and how to do it. I am happy to compensate such a guide for their time. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Need a mentor
Ouch! I drafted a well thought out question in Cnexus' [STOCK ROM][4.4] ND8 Kitkat ROM thread on Development and it vaporized because I have less than 10 posts to xda. I managed to root my Sprint GS3 and get wifi hotspot after asking only one question but my current upgrade path is more complicated. I have this [Q] thread that is not seen by many. I want to ask Cnexus if his DN8 ROM will preserve the 32GB internal space on my GS3.
If it does then I think I have read enough to upgrade to his ROM. I do not have time to read all 112 pages of posts. I have searched the thread and did not find the answer. I am happy to compensate via paypal a Senior Member or Developer for their time to help me figure out which ROM, downloads and the flash method.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Dunbar

Like I said, I don't know if what you need is even on XDA. I know there are people in these S3 sections who had the same problem but they found their solution elsewhere. I'd have to search myself in order to find the answer for you.
If I were you, I wouldn't use XDA's search in hopes of finding your solution.
I would Google for:
SPH-L710 32GB PIT
or
SPH-L710 32GB ND8 tar
You only need one or the other. The PIT file, in combination with the stock ND8 tar, which we do offer in development but which has been reported that without the 32GB PIT file, it'll format your phone to 16GB.

I'm not trying to be rude but all you would've had to read was the first post of @CNexus stock ND8 ROM thread - the part that says it's a requirement that you already have either OTA'd or Odined the stock ND8 tar. All ND8 ROMs require that, flashing them without Odining the tar in your case will either result in a temporarily non-working phone, or worse.

32GB PIT file located
Again, thanks for the help. Google search found a few possibilities but this xda post seems the most relevant. It has a PIT file for 32GB that Dees_Troy used to fix a phone that flashed to 16GB restoring it to 32GB.
I need a more knowledgeable member to help with the procedure. I know that's not what xda is all about, we are supposed to read several posts of hundreds of pages and compile a procedure list from that. Then implement it and fly or crash. I don't have the time but I do have money. I would gladly pay pal a customary amount of cash to someone who creates a thread with instructions. They might just get a bunch of likes from others on the forums by doing so. Hold harmless clause etc.
I did see CNexus' requirement of already being ND8. I guess that his ROM will preserve 32GB since it would already be configured that way.
I will read the stock ND8 tar thread to see if I can figure out where to put the PIT file and what to do in what order. Hopefully the answer is in there or someone will offer to help.
Thanks again for pointing the way.
[EDIT] > Another option might be to un-root my phone, take the OTA, then root using the modern methods. I followed QBKing77's instructions to root back when and he still has the Un-root video.

Warning, this process will completely wipe your internal storage, so back up anything you want from it.
You're welcome. There's a thread in development for Odin, which is a Windows program made to flash a stock unmodified from manufacturer ROM. That will be in tar format meaning the file ends in .tar. There's another thread in development, too, for the stock ND8 tar. It comes in a zip file so after you download it (it's huge) you'll have to extract it.
Odin v3.07 is the one I recommend.
Run Odin on your Windows PC. First, you can click Recovery to load the stock tar. Then click PIT to load the PIT file. I'm going by memory so it's something very close to this.
Shut your phone off. While it's off, hold down the Volume Down and Home buttons, and while doing that, push and hold the power button until you see anything on the screen. I think the first thing that shows is very small dark blue text in the very upper left corner.
Let go of all three buttons immediately when you see that text, or when your see anything else.
On the phone, it'll say to push a button to enter Download mode, maybe Volume Up. Again, from memory but all this is 99% accurate. Push the button it says to go into Download mode.
Plug the phone into your Windows PC. If this is the first time you've plugged it into your PC, it might take a minute or two to load drivers. Eventually you should see on the Odin program in one of the blank rectangular boxes that go across it towards the top, something like:
COM: 5
The particular number isn't important, it can be different, that's okay.
At that point you know Odin sees the phone just fine. Click the Start button in Odin. MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE HAS A GOOD CHARGE ON IT (mainly, just isn't anywhere near death, so 25% bare minimum but 50% or higher is better).
Uncheck the box that's by default checked to reboot the phone automatically.
The Odin process will take 5-10 minutes to complete. Do not touch or move the phone or cable once you start this process.
To root the phone, there's another thread maintained by @CNexus for Philz Touch Recovery in development. Download the very latest Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5 file. It'll be dated on the website from last month.
If you follow a link for it and it shows you a bunch of phone's sections D2LTE is what you want. The latest will normally be at the bottom of the list.
Make sure you get the tar.md5. There'll also be a zip and a zip.md5 or just md5. You don't need any other than the tar.md5 for this particular purpose.
Close Odin on the PC, disconnect the phone from the cable and pop out the battery.
Put the battery back in and put the phone in Download mode again (Volume Down, Home and Power). Press Volume Up or whatever it says to continue again.
Run Odin again and click on recovery and load the Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5 file. Uncheck the option to reboot automatically.
Plug the phone in, wait until Odin shows the COM: 5 or something similar, the click Start in Odin.
This won't take long.
When its done, unplug the phone, take the battery out and put it back in. This time go to Recovery mode. Same instructions as to go to Download mode, but instead of Volume Down its Volume Up, Home and Power.
Once Philz Touch Recovery is loaded, go to its options/settings and choose the option to re-root. When it's done, use Philz main menu to wipe Cache. Then in Advanced wipe Dalvik. Then you can use the main Philz menu to reboot the phone.
Enjoy!

SPH-L710, yes, although it's possible someone has an i by accident. Especially if they have shp instead of SHP. Couldn't find the ND8 tar in development here? Or do you mean the 32GB tar, which wouldn't need the PIT file.

I could not find the 32GB tar for ND8 that does not require the PIT file. That should be easiest to get to ND8 stock non-rooted for my 32GB then I can root. I am reluctant to use a PIT file that we are not certain is correct but a known good 32GB tar should get me where I need to be prior to root.

Cover me, I'm going in.
Concerns:
If someone calls while in Odin does it crash the process?
Do I need to wipe anything manually before starting?
I have backed up via Keys (old version). I assume it will restore many of my settings.
Here are the steps that I compiled from your instructions:
Loading Stock ND8
1 – Run Odin v3.07 as administrator
2 – Load L710VPUCND8_L710SPRCND8_L710VPUCND8_HOME.tar in the Recovery slot
3 – Load sph-i710-32gb.pit into the PIT slot
4 – Check ‘re-partition’ box and wait for next steps to establish phone connection.
5 – Phone off. Enter download mode by holding down Vol Down, Home and Power to first screen presence
6 – Enter download mode by moving cursor – Vol Up.
7 – Plug phone into PC. Drivers are already installed so look for Connection in Odin.
8 – Start Odin on good battery charge. Don’t touch phone until complete, 5-10min.
9 – Close Odin, disconnect cable from phone, turn phone off and remove battery.
Rooting via philz touch recovery
1 – Put battery back in and enter download mode as above.
2 – Run Odin as administrator and load philz_touch_6.15.7-d2lte.tar.md5 in the Recovery slot
3 – Uncheck box to prevent automatic reboot.
4 – Plug in phone to PC and watch for Odin to establish connection, ~COM:5
5 – Start Odin. It will be quick.
6 – When done close Odin. Unplug phone, Power Down and remove battery.
7 – Replace battery and enter Recovery Mode by holding Vol Up, Home and Power to first screen presence
8 – Let Philz load and cursor to options/settings and choose re-root option.
9 – When done navigate to Philz main menu and wipe Cache.
10 – In Advanced, wipe Dalvik
11 – Philz main menu to reboot phone.
Here is a list of the files and executables I am working with:
Odin_v3.07.zip
L710VPUCND8_L710SPRCND8_L710VPUCND8_HOME.tar.zip
sph-i710-32gb.pit
philz_touch_6.15.7-d2lte.tar.md5
Sprint_L710_GSIII_Samsung_USB_Driver_v1_4_6_0.exe
Do you see any holes in this procedure? If you think it is good to go then I ill launch on it and hopefully be done in an hour or so. Then I will need to get hotspot working and restore files and settings from my Kies backup.
Running bilgerryan's DeBloatifier/DeKnoxer removes the following apps I use:
Dropbox.apk
Gmail2.apk
GoogleSearchWidget.apk
Youtube.apk
Can I add those guys back in? I see he has just the De-Knox app remover but that leaves a the rest of the crap. I should not lean on you for this as you have helped me so much. I will go through his thread and see what to do.
Thanks for your patience and great help.

I don't use Kies; I don't know anything about it. Android should restore some of your stock settings if you have the option at in Android to Backup and Restore your settings. It does it once you set up your Gmail account and let it sync everything.
It'll install most or all apps you had loaded, too, albeit without their settings.

Can I add those guys back in? I see he has just the De-Knox app remover but that leaves a the rest of the crap. I should not lean on you for this as you have helped me so much. I will go through his thread and see what to do.
Thanks for your patience and great help.

You've got it! No problem adding back any app you want from the Play Store or elsewhere.
FYI there's a hotspot thread in development, if there's an Odex version, which I think there is and it'll be what you need.
You're welcome!

Success
Everything has gone smoothly with the ND8 and now the philz root. When i used philz to re-root it re-booted before I could clear cache and the file in advanced. It is loading my apps etc so when that is done I will go back into recovery and wipe the cache and the other file in Advanced. Then I will de-Bloat and fix the wifi hotspot.
[EDIT] Got the hotspot working but failed on the de-bloat. Used Titanium to freeze some unwanted stuff but I will look at the de-bloat closer to see what i did wrong. I commented out a few apps in a text editor. Got my programs backed up and all is good.
I really appreciate the xda forums and roirraW "edor" ehT in particular. Now I can continue with my 32GB GS3 on ND8 for a while. I qualify for an upgrade but will wait for better devices to be offered.
Awesome. I'm glad it went as planned. The cache and Dalvik cache thing was really only an option, and only really as a preventative measure to keep the phone from bootlooping as sometimes that happens after Odining a stock ROM, but I forgot that re-root reboots the phone automatically.
Wiping Cache and Dalvik never hurt and sometimes fix weird issues, it only causes the first boot after to take longer.
Cheers!
FYI, you could just flash a custom ROM based on ND8. They're all good, and all debloated to different levels.
You're welcome again! ☺

There is more and more new users coming to G3 and most of them have the same questions. This is a small FAQ about most frequent questions. I will update FAQ from time to time with new questions.
Q1: How many models are outhere?
Many. HERE is the list so check here.
Q2: How do I make an EFS and MODEM backup?
In recovery. Flash TWRP recovery and choose EFS in backup. I would suggest you to make EFS backup before you do anything on the phone.
Or use this method and make flashable EFS backup.
Q3: How do I root my phone?
There are few methods. Choose one that is for your variant. Purple Drake, Stump Root, IOroot.
Check this spreadsheet to see with what tool you can root your model.
Q4: How do I flash custom recovery?
Download recovery from HERE and flash it with FLASHIFY APP.
Or use ADB command explained HERE.
Besides mentioned recovery you have philz with OG Clockworkmod and TWRP with modem support.Q5: Where can I find stock firmware image?
You can find it HERE. Just type your IMEI.
Or HERE thanks to hyelton.Q6: How do I unroot my phone?
Just flash the stock firmware. Follow THIS GUIDE.
Q7: How do I enter recovery mode?
Power off the phone. Press Volume down and power button. When you see LG logo, keep holding Volume Down, release Power and quickly press it again.
You will be asked to questions and choose YES on them (do not worry, factory reset will not happen) and congrats, you are in recovery.
Q8: What ROM should I download?
Check index HERE. Thanks benkxda.
Q9: How do I install a certain ROM?
Make sure it is for your model, download it, place it on phone storage, boot into recovery, do a nandroid backup and then wipe the system. And least press install and choose ROM.
Q10: I am on rooted/stock Lollipop. How do I get back to Kitkat?
If you have nandroid backup just flash nandroid backup. Or flash stock firmware and see number 6. question.Q11: Can I convert one model to another (example: D852 to D855)?
NO! Do not try to do that.
Q12: My IMEI disappeared. What should I do?
Restore EFS backup. It is explained HERE.
Q13: Where is Flashlight on stock ROM?
There isn't one. Use PowerToggles or some other toggle app.
Q14: How to get rid of battery fully charged notification?
See my trick HERE.
Q15: How to root stock Lollipop?
You can't. You will have to revert to stock firmware, root the phone and flash some prerooted Lollipop ROM.
EDIT: We have a method now. Method is not that easy: New Root Method for LG Devices, but there is one click method for all variants..
Q16: How do I enter Download mode?
Power off the phone. Plug the USB cabel and press and hold Volume Up. Download mode will appear.
Q17: Can I get small navigation bar on Lollipop?
Yes you can. Check HERE.
Q18: Can I still receive and install an OTA on my rooted device?
If you are on stock ROM there is a chance you will get notification about update but you will not be able to install it successfully. To install it you will have to unroot the device and go back to fully stock.Q19: My PC won't connect to the phone by USB, what do I do?
Make sure you have the correct drivers installed and that USB Debugging is enabled. And always try other ports on your PC.Q20: My battery is draining fast. What should I do?
Monitor your battery with Gsam Battery Monitor or BetterBatteryStats and Wakelock Detector to find out what is draining your battery. After you find out uninstall or freeze that app/process.Q21: How to access camera when screen is off?
Press and hold volume down button (works on stock ROMs only).

I tried searching this one with no success:
What is kernel panic? I see it on the CM thread. I know it cannot be something good.
Thanks.

Basically when kernel can not boot properly or crashes during it. It can happen due to hardware fault or bad software.
I believe this is the most easier way to explain.
different version and network
Hi. I take it any question mean just that. Here goes. I have posted a thred for this but no replies.
Here in the UK we only get the 2 gig version. I want a 3 gig version from out the UK. What lg g3 32gb 3 gig would work in the UK from out of the UK? I want it the same as the UK version in every way except more ram. Little bloatware would be nice also.
There are so many lg versions it's left me stuck. I'm on ee network.
Kind regards rick

You can get 32GB version in UK also. For example you can get it from Mobicity.
Here it is: LG G3 32GB
They even have dual sim version.
You can always also go on Ebay.co.uk.
You need D855 version. That is international version.
Oh I didn't know that. That's great thanks!!

Android Noob Question
I am pretty much an Android Newbie. I had a nook Color that I put CM7 on a long time ago but never really used it for anything (still have it collecting dust). I have my first Android Phone (LG G3) and now Im really trying to get into the mix of things. But as a newb I have a handful of questions that probably could be answered pretty quickly. So here goes ...
1) Power on delay - sometimes when I tried to power on the phone it seems like I have to press for 5 seconds other times 10 or so. Is that normal?
2) Flashlight? - I didnt see a flashlight in by default. There are some one the store but I read somewhere that there was an LG one? Can someone point me to that?
3) Is there an App/shortcut to do multiple things (such as for getting into the car - disable wifi/enable bluetooth - open Waze - Open music app)
4) Similar to (3) How can I make a shortcut icon to a particular webpage?
5) How about a shortcut to put the phone to sleep without having to take it out of the dock to press the button on the back.
Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Hi!
1. It is not normal I would say. To me, it is always the same, pretty short.
2. You will have to go for some 3rd party app to use phone as flashlight. For example this one, QSlide Torch. But most of custom ROMs have that feature, or it can be added with Xposed. Or Power Toggles.
3. There is, it is Tasker. One of the most powerful apps.
4. Would not know with built in browser because I do not use t, but for example with Dolphin Browser you can make webpage shortcut icon on your screen.
5. You mean normal locked state (deep sleep)? Double tap anywhere on the screen to unlock, and same to lock it, just double tap on homescreen (if you use 3rd party launcher press twice on status bar to lock it).
I had stopped feeling like a newbie until I started looking for my next upgrade. I'm on a Galaxy S3, and rooting/flashing was a snap. I rooted it with towelroot, downloaded CWM from the app, did my nandroid, and then it was on.
I'm on Sprint, so in a few weeks I'll be grabbing the ls990. I've been reading up on the limited choice of good devices Sprint offers, and none of them are established enough to root and flash as easy as it was with my S3. As much as I look, it keeps coming back to the G3 for me, so that's what I'm getting.
Things have been changing so fast over the past month, I've lost track of what I'll need to do once I get it after December 1st. If there aren't any major changes in the next 10 days, what will I need to do when I get my device? I only have experience with CWM, but it doesn't look like that's an option yet. I guess I need help knowing what to do in what order.
I'm confused about Stump Root. Do you get TWRP when you go through that process? Once I have root and recovery, do I create a nandroid the same way, by just doing a backup?
When all that's done and I flash a rom like Cloudy, will I still get OTA pushes? Once I did all that with my S3, I never got notifications for them, but it sounds like they will still come with the G3.
That's a lot. Sorry about that!

Hello,
I have just upgraded mine to Lollipop 5.0 and I see the Guest mode enabled by default. There is no Guest mode options in Settings to turn it off. I knew how to setup Guest mode when I was using 4.4, but not with this 5.0. Probably I missed somthing?
Could someone give me some directions please, thank you very much.

To gain root it is pretty simple on Sprint. You can root it with Stump root method like you said.
I have not used that method so I do not know if you will get recovery, I believe you will not so you will have to flash recovery with app called Flashify. You can get it from playstore, but before you will have to get correct recovery image and put it on your phone storage.
Recovery image can be downloaded here: http://downloads.codefi.re/thecubed/lg_g3/bump/
You can also use command line to flash recovery: http://www.droidviews.com/install-twrp-recovery-on-lg-g3-all-variants-using-bump/
Nandroid backup is created in recocery under "backup" section. It will backup your current setup (rom, apps, and all on system).

I am on AOSP ROM so I can not check but it should be in settings (multiple account/guest mode).
View settings as list, that should be easier to find it.
@mjjcb - forgot to answer on last question. Once you flash custom rom you will not be able to receive OTA updates. To receive official OTA you will have to gobl back to stock firmware.
And always before flashing make sure that your phone version is supported by that rom.
Hi, I've been searching but eden with the great info here it is easy to miss gotcha. I'm looking to buy a G3 for me and a G2 for the wife, preferably a Tmo or other US GSM carrier version. With the Tim version or Bump, can the current custom recovery installers install TWRP even if the current phone owner has flashed whatever the latest OTA is? Thanks!!

Before Starting This Process Get A USB2 Mini Hub You Are Most Likely Going Too Need It. Do Not Come In Here And Post This Is Not Working Until You Have Tried It With The USB2 Mini Hub!
You Must Start From Stock U Firmware. IT Seems To Be The Less Likely To Brick Your Device As Explained In The Disclaimer!Disclaimer Please Read!!
This may brick your device there is a problem especially with s8 and note 8 models where the tz partition becomes corrupted and on some occasions after flashing combination firmware your phone will become bricked and as of now there is no way to fix it. There is no way to predict if it will happen. It doesn’t seem too happen very often on s8+ but it does occasionally happen on the other 2 models so do this at your own risk. I would say it probably happens 10 percent of the time on s8 and note 8 especially when on bit 6 or higher firmwares. S8+ it rarely happens too but it still may. If you take the risk and it happens do not pm me asking how to fix it as of time I posted this there is no way to fix it
Please Read Notes
OEM Toggle Does Nothing On US Model Phones
You will most likely need a USB 2 mini hub for Odin to work if using windows 8 or higher. I would temporarily disable windows defender or antivirus software while performing the procedure with your computer.
You cannot have root on any rom except a nougat rom also flashing custom boot images cannot be done or using systemless magisk. Hiding root or running modules cannot be done. There is no oem unlock and even if there is you cannot unlock your bootloaders or run any aosp based roms.
You can be on any firmware to achieve safestrap but to run a rooted rom you will be limited to using a special nougat android 7 rom. You can have safestrap on pie android 9 which gives you some ability to modify system files flash zips etc and have access too data and other partitions that are normally blocked but you can not run root on android 9 because root on android 9 requires a modified boot image

so if i remain at nougat i should be able to flash custom roms? Also, i'm currently facing "no service" problem on my g995u. Any ideas if going back to nougat would rectify the issue?

Rooted Nougat Rom
This is last nougat rom made for S8 it is prerooted with flashfire and safestrap preinstalled. It has CSC stuff for all carriers added. Its debloated slightly with knox removed. Some stuff may not work but im not sure as I cannot test but this stuff may include fingerprint and or face recognition. If stuff doesnt work it probably related to using pie modems and non-hlos on a nougat rom which you have no choice.

i was on a g995u1 firwmare(bootloader v7) although i was having issues with "no signal". i thought maybe if i follow your guide to return the rom back to nougat my network would return to normal.
i only flashed this file "BL_ENG_BOOTLOADERS_SAFESTRAP_G955U_V7.tar.md5".
ps. i did tick the "nand erase" in odin.
the flash completed but my phone went black and did not reboot again.. i disconnected hoping to get it back to download mode again but nothing was working. i have tried using volume down and power keys but this only causes the a little part of the screen to flicker for less than a second.
my battery was 99%. I dont have qualcomm drivers installed. i am installing one as we speak, i have seen some threads with similar issues like mine but no solutions.. thanks for your response..:crying::crying::crying:

my battery was 99%. I dont have qualcomm drivers installed. i am installing one as we speak, i have seen some threads with similar issues like mine but no solutions.. thanks for your response..:crying::crying::crying:

It happens once in awhile for no reason. Nand erase may have had something too do with it. I never use nand erase except if going back too totally stock from a modified system. I responded too your pm. You’re phone can probably be fixed with edl files but you are going too have too take your phone apart and jump some test points to make phone enter edl mode

I use to have pics and stuff but I lost them on a hard drive that failed. I can tell you they are on the bottom side of the board and you have to pry back a metal heat shield to get too them

You have to take board out and flip it over. The points are on the bottom side

OK, Thanks for the response. i see two large heat sinks with the larger one at the top and the smaller at the bottom. i assume the points would be hidden underneath the bottom sink. now i have to figure out a way to pry those metals off... so much work..lol..
Will this work on all V7 Bootloaders?
I am currently on DTF4 and noticed your on the Verizon page you posted for the DTB3 Bootloader. Thanks for your time and efforts.

Thanks this worked for me! Is there a guide on how to reverse everything if I wanted to make the phone normal again? Like it would be factory out of the box?
