Can somebody explain me the proper way to build the boot image? I'm able to build a pure kernel image but i'ts now what i need to flash into boot partition.
Eh that's a bit complicated, the kindled booting is a uniqueish format. Hashcode made a custom make setup in cm's build system to put it together since it not only has a weird signature but a second bootloader added onto the beginning of it as well. Are you compiling a rom or just trying to rebuild the bootimg?

Yeah, I've tried to figure out from the CM port how it's built. I've found some code here:

But I can't figure out how to attach a kernel image, ramdisk, what else.
I'm not building rom, just want to change some features in the stock kernel.
I could attempt to throw one together for you, I think my current setup doesn't bother to check the intramfs as long as it exists in the out directory, I'd just have to replace the kernel and initramfs and attempt a build. O wait I'm in the 8.9" section, I don't have a working build of b2g going for that yet, probably wouldn't be the best idea, would probably work but Idk. You could just build cm from source and pull the bootimg out of the zip it makes. Maybe I can slap together some instructions, I kinda see in the makefile how it works but makefile scripting isn't my forte, its similar to bash but different enough i can get confused at points.

Building the whole cm is a bit overhead. I don't need the complete build script but it would be great if you point out some makefiles, or places to look in the source tree, i'll try to fugure out how to use it.

most of that file makes sense, the only thing i am unfamiliar with is [email protected] $ usually means a variable or something else i'm trying to rember involving a program, probably storing output from a program as the variable. As to the @ symbol i have heard it means array, not very sure at all about how it works.

I am in need of a kernel with loop enabled. I am in the newest OTA, if one doesn't exist I could use some help compiling one from the newest source, I have everything I need to do it on my Linux machine I am stuck trying to find which makefile to edit and where the .config file containing CONFIG_DEV_BLK_LOOP is located.
If it matters at all I would much rather compile my own kernel so I can learn something new.

LOL. I'm on the more technical side, program for a living and have compiled a share of Linux kernels in my life, and I'm not quite sure what you are referring to. Sadly most of the sharper devs pretty much handle these forums in a one-way manner, they put out stuff, but they rarely read other people's posts. There are plenty of people that like to help out, but most of those folks aren't going to know anything about compilation.
The makefile you need to edit is in the root of the kernel source. The very first one that you see.
I am referring to loop devices support, this enables me to boot ubuntu on my Evo, it is one line of code that needs to be un-commented and changed to "CONFIG_DEV_BLK_LOOP=y

I have all the files I need, I was following the tut at htcevohacks.com but the instructions seriously slack off & there are numerous makefiles in multiple folders on top of that I can't seem to find what file contains the line config_dev_blk_loop, could you point me to a more complete walk-through please, oh and I am on the latest OTA with the newest kernel and radios.

Ok, well I guess I am gonna just have to PM each Dev individually about each individual kernel, damn all I need is a how-to or tut on kernel compiling (which the search function apparently can't find) or someone that knows of a 2.2 kernel with loop devices enabled. Oh well.
I'm pretty sure netarchy kernels are loop back enabled. Ask around there maybe.

YAAY! LMFAO, I will ask there, sorry I'm excited but I have been trying to get this working for a while; I would much rather learn to build it myself but I will take what I can get for now.

Did you ever find or get your Complie to work? I tried for a while to compile the stock Kernel, then gave up. I took a stab in the dark and flashed a stable netarchy kernel. unfortunatly that Kernel didn't have Loop devices enabled (Pulled Config file and Unzipped it) I like the Kernel I am running but need to find a way to get ubuntu running.
Netarchy does have loop enabled, I am running Netarchy ___(will find which version later can't remember) but yeah I am running Lakia Linux
now(network security testing, think Backtrack 3) as well as another new Linux image from a guy here, anyways I think you need Netarchy universal cfs havs less no sbc 4.2.2

Ok, so after having a million questions I thought I'd write up a quick little 'how to' with regards to porting.
And now the warning
Read and learn first, doing this could cause serious issues with your tab or even brick it. The tab is really tough, and hard to brick if you do everthing right but it could still happen. I'm not responsible if it does.
Where to start
Get good at reading, google searching and searching XDA. Lots of porting discussion regarding other phones can apply to the tab.
Learn to use Heimdell
Have a linux distro available, either by virtual box, or natively.
Technomancer where it all began
I've said it before and I'll say it again, without techs work miui wouldn't have been possible.
Reference technomancers thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931857 on how to download the cm7 + sgt source, you're also going to want to follow the kernel making part, cause most likely you'll need to make adjustments to the init.rc which is inside the initramfs and requires building the kernel again.
porting x build
Get X build onto your computer and extract the update.zip for it.
Copy the boot.img into your linux environment and extract it using splitbootimg.pl script (note: Google it, plus this doesn't work with samsung builds). Compare the init.rc to your init.rc (from the sgt cm7 kernel source root folder). Specifically the most important part here is the PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH statement and BOOTCLASSPATH lines.
Build your kernel with the updated init.rc and flash with heimdell, it should still boot your cm7/miui build (if you were running it before) albeit with errors.
The system
Now following the awesome list of proprietary files (either from your source folder or technomancers github link) check the galaxytab-common-vendor-blobs.mk for the GT-P1000. It lists every file you need that's propreitary to the tab and where to put it.
Also you'll probably need the debuggerd from /system/bin on the cm7 build.
Compare the /system/build.prop of the cm7 build to your port, make sure the ril info is the same as well as the ro; model, brand, device, board, and platform lines.
Create an update.zip (or whatever you want to call it.zip) and try it.
It's not booting
Logcat is great, but I really suggest using the ddms from the android sdk tools. It's color coded, and gives a much nicer view of what's happening.
Using winmerge in windows or a linux file compare program start checking what other bin files may be missing that you require. Special notice to the xbin folder.

Ok, first up, make sure you have permission if this is someone elses custom build you've ported. Most people/groups are really good about it assuming you ask first and give them credit in your post.
Also credit everyone who helped, answered a question or sent you in the right direction. (it's just polite)
Second your going to want to make sure your update.zip flashes the kernel, read the update_script from the cm7 build to understand how it works.
So that's it for a start. roll up your sleves, gather your courage and get to it!
Please if you have other tips, add them to the thread, what's better 1 or 2 'developers/porters' or 100?

Following this method, with slight alterations to adjust, I was able to port an i9000 phone build to the tab in about 10 minutes, it's really not terribly that difficult once you have the right steps.
The first couple times are usually frustrating but after that you get the hang of it

First: Im a noob, so unless i have fewer than 10 posts i can only post in general forum - otherwise i would post on an existing thread (i will mention later).
Last week i got a new phone: Samsung Galaxy Y Pro (GT-B5510).
Its a nice phone, but im missing a thing: a firewall.
I tried droidwall and other, but they arnt working. So there is something wrong with the netfilter/iptables modul and ive to rebuild the kernel.
After a quick search i found this thread and this post.
I already set up a Ubuntu (10.04.4), downloaded the source from samsung and the toolchain from Sourcery (like they mention inthe infofile from samsung).
I build the kernel, like irfanbagus in his post, but for my device.
I got lots of compilerwarnings, but in the end i have had my zImage without errors.
I split my boot.img, which i got from my device with Terminal Emulator, with split_bootimg.pl.
Now ive got a kernelimage and a initrd and ive to put them together.
Presumably with mkbootimg, but ive to know the baseadress.
I tried the offset from the thread mentiond above.
I made a tar and flashed it with Odin1.85 and half bricked it.
[I only can see a grey battery on the diplay and if i reboot it it stuck on bott/splashscreen]
Maybe somebody can help. (please)

Or is it the wrong baseaddress? Well i could not find the address inside the sourcecode (like kconfig), like i read somewhere, thats why i tried the one from s5360.
There is no problem with odin or the cable, cause i can flash my backup with it to 'unbrick' it.
And why is the bootimg around 700kb smaller than the original?

i don't find any problem with boot.img. offset is equal (0x81600000). the problem maybe in your zImage. make sure you build with correct defconfig. mine is bcm21553_totoro_05_defconfig, i don't know yours, see in text info inside zip file from samsung. and make sure using the same compiler version with text info said. using different version make prebuild kernel module inside initramfs not working. start with default config from xxx_defconfig just to make sure your step is correct. and if still not working your best hope is build your module as loadable module (.ko), add init.d support in init.rc (inside initramfs), and load your module using init.d script.
about the size, it's nomal boot.img from dd command bigger than normal boot.img because it's copy whole partition and include unused bytes behind the original boot.img.

your compiled boot.img don't have md5 checksum. i am not sure it have effect, i make that tutorial based post from harish2704 here. mkbootimg from harish2704 have --kernelMD5 param. try use that one.

our kernel partition only 5 mb my friend...
Boot.img from dd not work with me so i pick from pda stock-rom
(i use from doky thread).

Trying other method to compile, irfan say merruk use lzma or someting like that.
I can only suggest the method irfanbagus described (loadable kernel modules) because the source code Samsung released probably isn't up to date. The benefits of compiling the needed modules into the kernel are too little compared with possible bugs which are in the released code but not in the stock kernel.

i find relative new kernel for sgy, but still cannot make running. it's from galaxy pocket source. there is small change related to power management, but still don't have time to studying.
After a weekend full of trouble, today i found time to continue the bootimg-thing.
I now compiled only the modules and load them now with initd, because i was unable to build a runnable kernel from source.

are you sure that we can use that kernel for our sgy?
After following this tutorial I compiled CM9 for my r800x and everything works fine but since I first compiled I have edited the SystemUI sources. The problem is when I compile it doesn't compile the new sources. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Sorry if this is a noob question.
Extra information (not sure if important but might help find the cause):
Using Xubuntu 12.10
Oracle Java 6
I edited /frameworks/base/packages/SystemUI
I compiled for zeusc instead of zeus
What more specifically did you modify? Not sure why it would not rebuild, unless there's some kind of issue with the timestamps or your system clock. (It knows to rebuild if the source files have a newer timestamp than the compiled files they produced)
You can always just do a clean build. You can even just change the output directory without messing up your current build:

Never even thought about changing the location it is output to or anything like that. Kinda feel dumb not trying that but I will soon. Also I've looked at CyanogenMod's wiki already. And is CM 10 working on zeusc? I thought it was still only zeus but I haven't checked in a while.

Cj360 made a zeusc version and uploaded it to fxp cm10 page. I've tested it and it works great

Make sure the timestamp of the file you added is newer than the time you built. Otherwise, make will not realize there is a new file. Seems like you must have modified some other source file though to make use of the new source file.
A simple way to update the timestamp of a file is the "touch" command. If you touch a file before your build, it should always rebuild that file unless you have more serious problems.
Also, I forgot about the zeusc not being as well supported... so hopefully all the fixes for CM10 on the zeusc are in the repositories.
I do like CM10 better than CM9... especially since I figure if we're going to ditch stock-based GB, there's even less reason to live in the past.

Changing the timestamp didn't do anything. I'll try deleting the already compiled files and recompile everything over again tomorrow. Also CM10 is a lot better in my opinion too so I'll try it now so hopefully it'll work and fix the problems I'm having.

CM10 works good on zeusc. Haven't found any bugs and I added the changes to it's SystemUI and it compiled it for me and works great. Thanks for the help!
As a proof of concept I compiled Kit Kat for our Acer Inconia. It needs a new build of CWM in order to flash. I have not been able to boot up CWM that I compiled so anyone here that has built recovery on here before try to build latest CWM and/or TWRP then we can try out this KitKat build to see if it boots or not. It may need some kernel patches. It's using pio_maski's jb-mr2 trees that I modified for 4.4 for a100 (note: I haven't uploaded yet and won't unless it boots).

1. Compile the latest TWRP or CWM and post if it boots. Only do this if you've done it before; I'm not going to teach because it is out of my knowledge why CWM won't boot. If you come across any errors and don't know how to fix PM me or post here I'll help you fix it.

I am not a "DEV", however I have a good amount of talent with photoshop and have some self taught coding experience with linux and html5. I also am willing to learn/eager to learn. I know you mentioned you don't want to teach. Just know if you point me in the direction I am willing to do the work on my end to get the knowledge and apply it. I have been playing with this tablet and working on a hybrid kitkat look alike using 4.1.2 as my base. I tried using 4.3 and applying 4.4 goodies to it. Didn't work that well. The 4.3 Jellytime was a bit quirky at times and didn't seem stable as a daily driver. I have put together a couple new boot animations to compliment kitkat already. I have also modified Arora installer with a very good kitkat theme. I have used it several times to verify it works correctly. I can provide that if wanted. I am waiting for a stable build and willing to help where I can. I plan on installing this tablet into my dash in the very near future. Once that is done, unfortunately I will only be able to help with themes and basic items that don't require the tablet all the time. I have contemplated having the ability to remove the tablet whenever I leave the car so I guess we will see when I get there. Apologize for the long post.

This is not a port, thus doesn't need modification. It is compiled (built) from source and the work that needs to be done is in the source code so it can be compiled properly and work without modification

Thanks for the link and quick response, will take a look through some of that stuff and see if there is anything I can do to help. Also I noticed while I was typing the first one you put up a download... Did you get it to boot. I downloaded and tried using TWRP and was unsuccessful. I tried a couple times to make sure it copied over from the computer correctly. Still the same result.
4.4 updates different. Latest cwn will flash it. Maybe there's an easy way to do this

Ok so I am stuck right now. I spent a couple hours building an environment and started compiling from source. I am stuck at this point:
$ source build/envsetup.sh
$ breakfast a700
Where a700 is, should be a100. I get errors when doing this because CyanogenMod does not have the device in it's file system. Whoever has successfully done this, please advise. I am over half way with this and would like to complete the build. I have about 20gbs of data sitting on my cpu waiting to compile this so the sooner we can find the solution the better. Thanks in advance.
Need help solving this to move further... There might be a work around, however I have never done this and I am stuck.

Sounds good. I spent a good part of 3 hours compiling a master build of Kitkat which was complete prior to me leaving for work this morning, however my daughter kicked the power strip under the desk and shut everything down. I will try and find a little time tonight to recompile.
Am I missing something?

Is this TWRP new enough for your needs if not what is the newest version you are aware of
a100 TWRP 2.6.1.0 windows installer: as far as I can tell the Twrp image is based of linuxsociety's/GodMachine's work I know for sure the installer is his

I have flashed this and all seems to work well
I also took the 2.6.1.0 from the above linked installer and put it into a flashable.zip that originaly contained GM's 2.2.2.1 TWRP
I updated the script to show the proper version as well attatched below
AngryManMLS Is responsible for both 2.6.1.0 and 2.6.3.0, "if I am not mistaken"?

I just want to correct something. The only thing I have done was updating the Windows and Linux installers for TWRP. I have no responsibility with the compiling of TWRP itself. At this point we're waiting for the TWRP folks themselves to fix whatever issues that lie with Kit Kat 4.4. I don't know what to say beyond that. Sorry.

My Bad I shouldn't have assumed do you know who is doing the compiling?
I'm going to go ahead and compile TWRP. I've educated myself on the a100 (I've never done programming on this device or any other Tegra based device... Used to Qualcomm and HTC) hopefully it will work. Current TWRP branch on GitHub is twrp2.7 and has all KitKat changes in it. I'll have a build tomorrow morning. Tonight I have to finish my essays and other homework. I'll let you all know if recovery boots or not. If it does boot, I'll go ahead and attempt installing and booting KitKat

Once I have time, which won't be until later tonight. You could use www.github.com/pio-masaki too. Use the jb-mr2 branch for 4.3

Well I compiled latest TWRP it didn't work it has same errors. I'll take this up with Dees_Troy. Because when I place the same trees and TWRP into the cm-11 source it won't compile, whereas it compiles fine in cm-10 source. When I manually fix compilation errors it compiles but when flashed it doesn't boot. Same story with CWM
