General start moding questions - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the S4 Mini Model number SCH-R890 from US Cellular. I Rooted my device. I have a few questions.
1. What are some must have apps I should have before I mod my phone?
2. If I plug my phone into my computer and copy all the files to my computer could that be my back up? (I dont have an SD card yet)
3. Is there a video I can watch or detailed instructions to guide me through restoring my phone if I brick it (maybe softbrick?)
4. Will apps like Wanam Exposed work with my model of phone?
5. Are there any files I can open up and read (on note pad) or another program like that to change the values IE to change the color of my drop down notification bar manually?
6. What is a good micro SD card to have for your smart phone (performance wise)?

App2SD now working on S3!

I just received an e-mail from Zeedomax over at GalaxyS3Root.com with a fix for the App2SD problem on the Galaxy S3!
This will allow you to install apps to your SD card on your GS3.
I just picked up a 64gb SD card and will be enjoying all the extra space for my apps!
Here is the link: http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-t...-external-microsd-for-u-s-canadian-galaxy-s3/
Much credit goes out to Max for his awesome help on Android!
*Note, this does not use the "App2SD" app, it is just a mod that will swap where your phone stores data
Should we wipe and reinstall apps in order to take advantage?
I think that you can uninstall and then restore with Titanium Backup.
How's the performance with using the SD as the main memory?
I'm planning on using my 32gb class 10 sandisk.
feedbacks?
I didn't use it for very long because I still have room with the 16 gb that came on my phone. But when I did, it worked fine for me. I have a class 10 sdxd. If you don't like it though, it's super simple to switch back.
There thread in s3 development already??

if i recall this is old news now i believe bout 2 or 3 weeks now......that theyve had this already, under android developement section i believe in the second page, but this is still good for people that dont kow and still wanna find it.....only problem bout this is that their is a issue with some phones that when u install this it will swap the storage but ure internal desappears thus leaving u with just the external as a new internal, so u cant access ure real internal anymore due to the lack of support.
there is a way to fix this just follow the instructions here: give thanks to android94301 for figuring out how to do it.

As Promised, Solved: another way to do it using Script Manager
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't invent this, Zedomax adapted in from mattiadj. But most people haven't been able to get it fully working, probably due to variations in the init.d function of various ROMS. They'd be able to see the External SD card as the internal SD, but the internal SD would disappear. This method avoids using init.d, and instead uses the app Script Manager to load the script on boot.
After much fooling around, I figured out how to do it so the External SD card and the internal cards are swapped, but you can see both with any file Explorer. I got it working on CleanROM 2.0, but it should work on Beans 10 as well.
Here's how to do it: Warning, if you do not understand the following instructions, or don’t have experience doing these things, you probably don’t want to do this hack. I am not responsible if you a) brick your phone, b) delete your data, or c) get very frustrated. That being said, the most likely failure will be that you only see the one card (the External card).
Back everything up that you care about first!!!!
1. First, I'd recommend making a Nandroid backup of your phone.
2. Next, just to be extra safe, I would backup your internal SD card to your PC. While you are doing that, if you have data on the external SD card, back that up too.
3. Next, I would format your external SD card to fat 32. (You could probably use Ext format too, but I didn’t test that.)If you already have it in that format, and have content on it, this won't affect the content, but back it up just to be safe. It’s probably better to have the Ext SD blank to begin with, you can always copy back its content from your pc.
4. Next copy the contents of the internal SD to the External SD card. This is to avoid confusion about apps and such.
5. Next install script manager free from the play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...51bGwsMSwyLDNd
It will show up on your phone as S manager ads.
6. Download the mod from here: http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/G...EDOMAXv0.2.zip
7. You’ll see a folder called: 11extsd2internalsd_gs3_fat32orextfat_US_ZEDOMAXv0. 2.zip
You need to unzip the folder, then go to System/etc/init.d and copy the 11extsd2internalsd file from there to your phone. Put it into the /data directory. Use Root Explorer, and your phone will need to be rooted.
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD C...0directory.png)
Or you can get just the 11extsd2internalsd file here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD C...tsd2internalsd
8. Using Root Explorer, navigate to that file in the /data directory. Press and hold the file name until the menu pops up, and click on permissions.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD C...ermissions.png
(Unix geeks set them to 777, and everyone else copy the picture below. Click OK.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD C...ings 777.png
9. Open the script manager app, and select Browse as Root in the config screen. Tell it to remember this setting.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD C...and save.png
10. Navigate to the /data directory and choose the 11extsd2internalsd file that is located in /data and click on it. Click on the “Is script” button.
11. Now tap on the buttons that say Su, Boot, and Save. The file name will come up in yellow after the save.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD C...ter save.png
12. Reboot your phone and you should see the swap working and be able to access both internal and external SD cards. The external card will show up as sdcard, and the internal card will show up as extSDCard. Your apps should now install to the external card, since your phone will think it's the internal card. Is that confusing? It was to me too!
Good luck and please share your experiences specifying which ROM you used, so that others can avoid frustration.
Thank you’s always appreciated.
This is not working for me but thanks anyways

Stuck on installing ROM from SD card

From this thread
I n s t a l l a t i o n (if you are coming from another ROM):
1. Download ROM file and place it on SD card
2. Download and flash kernel you like (or not, if you have locked bootloader)
3. Download WiFi Modules of chosen kernel and place them on sdcard
4. Go to CWM Recovery.
5. Wipe data and cache!
6. Flash zip with ROM
7. Flash zip with WiFi modules
8. Reboot and enjoy!

How do you do number 1? Does it litterally mean just place it anywhere on the SD card or do you somehow install it (with flashtools?). I've got a locked boot loader.
Plug your phone into the computer with the USB cord.
In the status bar of your phone you will see USB connected. Tap on the USB connected notification, then at the bottom tap Turn on usb storage.
Copy the rom on your computer, open my computer, select the phones SD card and copy it to that folder (the root folder)
With a locked bootloader you are unable to do number 2 (flash Kernel) so this particular rom is not for you.
If you don't understand, how to copy to sd card, may i suggest a bit more reading/study before flashing.
Good luck.
EDIT: #2 allows for a locked bootloader. you can install rom.

Thanks but you misunderstand my question. "Download ROM file and place it on SD card" well that doesn't do anything you just have the files sitting there. At no step does it say how to actually install them? Am I missing something?

Procedure:
1) Copy superuser.zip in your sd card.
last version 1.51
http://www.4shared.com/zip/jLZckTwA/update-supersu-v151.html
2 ) Unpack Flashtool version for quad core in a folder
New version of flashtool SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1312.0.150
http://www.4shared.com/zip/RHJJa1Qx/sp_flash_tool_exe_v313160150.html
3 ) Run Flashtool and select only two files:
a) the famous scatter file
b ) Also choose the file recovery
( or TWRP recovery of cwm that previously had to be copied to the firmware folder )
CWM recovery vers.5 only for zp990
Now make sure that you select only these two files
The phone must be in the mode 'of off .... if you want to be thorough , you can also remove the battery and put it back but always in a position to phone off
Now click on "download" in the program Flashtools .
Now you can connect the USB cable to the phone ( the phone that is always on repeat off ) .
You will see that she will send fleshtool ' messages of some colored bars and then we give ' a ok with a green circle !
4 ) Now you have your phone with the recovery changed but have not yet completed the process of root because ' lacks the manager that it would be superuser permissions !
We must enter the mode ' recovery !
On this phone to enter the mode ' of recovery we will need ' the program MTKDROIDTOOLS :
download it here:
version 2.42 http://www.4shared.com/rar/SIZQYYL3/...ools_v242.html
version 2.48 http://ge.tt/2yL21VT
In the model zp990 not possible to enter the mode '' ' recovery using the volume + and Power at the same time , so we need this program!
That works, but only in certain circumstances ( usb cable plugged in and charging) .. but we will use mtkdroidtools .
Turn on the phone and performed by Droid pc tools , and connect the USB cable to the PC to recognize our zp990 had previously been downloaded
drivers ( first page ), or (more ' simple ) download snappea ( program to recognize the pc all phones ) from snappea.com .
5 ) Please reboot into recovery mode and step into the ' recovery of cwm or TWRP as the following photos :
Look the two photo attached::good:
6 ) Now you are in recovery changed where you can perform a myriad of programs and tools upgrades and also make a backup , so that if you have a configuration
all yours and come out ' a new firmware you just have to update the firmware to reinstall the recovery of cwm in this case and reinstall your backup.
Proceed with the installation of the operator permits root ( superuser ) .
You must select with the buttons Volume + or - install zip file from sd card
Esternal then install zip from sd card and select superuser ..... you have on your sd ( you would have to copy the first operation ) and run with selection yes !
At this point you back ....... .... reboot and return to the Android phone will find the program superuser !
7 ) Do you have root privileges .... so be careful because you might accidentally delete system files and then have a phone lock !
So much attention to what you do!
At this point you have to choose the program from the market that you will ' get to the root ... I use Root Browser ( Android icon black pirate with eye patch )
Procedure with Eroot :
( tested by Buonsala )
I wanted to show you this simple procedure for the root , and I think it 's easier than indicated .... (I'm only advice I will not go against anyone !)
1 ) On your phone enable USB debugging ( settings - Developer options )
2 ) download and install the drivers published at the beginning of this discussion
3 ) eroot downloaded from here:
eroot_v1.3.4 - Download - 4shared - Nabeel Moderator
4 ) eroot extract and run ( with the phone connected to USB)
5) If eroot identifies your model ( ZP990 will come out in a big first screen) press the green tasro ROOT , wait steps
6 ) at the end reboot and you will have root!
We are now in one easy step to install the CWM (having the root) with 2 simple steps:
1) download the CWM ( the img file posted at the beginning of the debate) and copy it to the SD card of the phone ( no matter whether internal or external)
2 ) download and install to play store uncle Mobile processors for mtk
3 ) Open Mobile uncle and meu ' go to " recovery update" - MobileUncle will automatically find the file that you placed on the SD , and everything will be installed , now from here you can also reboot into recovery.

Good morning, I've question. I've read about Zopo's smartphone like the ZP980 model, that some people said that it's impossible to install programs in the internal rom beacuse is preformatted. It's only available a little memory space about 1,5 GB.
So my question is if it's possible to install programs, applications and games in all the 32GB phone storage of the ZP990?
Thanks for reply.

Hi Friend,
For the internal system memory you can reflash the firmware with new ebr 1 and 2 to amount the operative system to 2,49 gb and the remain memory to use like internal sd....but some apps must need to sd card and so you in some situations don't make nothing in other situation you can decide to install some apps in sd card!

p,s.
before any type of operations wait the link to the original firmware.....because if you became in brick situation you don't have the possibility to relive the phove!

As mentioned you can expand the storage space for apps, however most large apps install on SD card, either internal or external. I've installed may GBs worth of games already today, but all the large games have the files on SD card, so no problem here at least

Got my ZP990 today. Haven't noticed any ghost touches this far. Tested in normal use and when charging too. Any particular situation where you encounter this on you ZP980? Then I can check if it happens on my ZP990 as well.

I'm inside in low-light now. So I tested using my old phone's LED flashlight. Moving it further and closer to the sensors. It works very well as far as I can see. Increases brightness fairly quickly when the LED light shines on it and reduces brightness when i direct it elsewhere.

Vodafone smart tab 4G

Hello,
is possible manually update my tablet to Android 5? I found this
but from ( ROM Part 1 : http://goo.gl/7pyL97 ) this site i cant download ROM
Upgrade/Update Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to 5.0 Lollipop
Upgrade/Update Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to 5.0 Lollipop
I rewrite this tutorial from forum.xda-developers.com :
The users of Vodafone Smart Tab 4g can now update their handsets to Android 5.0 Lollipop using custom ROM. The new Android 5.0 Lollipop comes with many new features :
- Up to 4x performance improvements.
- A battery saver feature which extends device use by up to 90 mins.
- It has a faster, smoother and more powerful computing experience.
- Support for 64-bit SoCs using ARM, x86, and MIPS-based cores.
- OpenGL ES 3.1 and Android extension pack brings Android to the forefront of mobile graphics putting it on par with desktop and console class performance.
- Responsive, natural motion, realistic lighting and shadows, and familiar visual elements make it easier to navigate your device.
- More intelligent ranking of notifications based on who they’re from and the type of communication. See all your notifications in one place by tapping the top of the screen.
- New devices come with encryption automatically turned on to help protect data on lost or stolen devices.
- SELinux enforcing for all applications means even better protection against vulnerabilities and malware.
- State of the art video technology with support for HEVC main profile to allow for UHD 4K 10-bit video playback, tunneled hardware video decoding to save power and improved HLS support for streaming.
- and other cool features.
Here are some more aspects that users should know before trying out the custom ROM :
- Users need to have proper back-up for their personal data on the device.
- The handset should have at least 80 percent of battery power.
- The users also need to ensure that USB Debugging is enabled on the device.
- During the installation, if the device gets stuck on booting, users can perform wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik before rebooting the device.
Tutorial
1. Download Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM for Vodafone Smart Tab 4g from link below :
The ROM File size is big, so I split the file into 3 parts :
ROM Part 1 : http://goo.gl/7pyL97
ROM Part 2 : http://goo.gl/ffHU2x
ROM Part 3 : http://goo.gl/l1zKh5
To combine 3 parts files above into 1 file just use WINRAR, then extract the files into ZIP format. If any problem with the ROM, maybe because the ROM have corrupted during the download process, you can try to re-download the ROM.
2. Install the ROM Manager on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . Get it from Google Play Store, then install the clockwork mod recovery. You also can use ROM Installer application from JRummy Apps Inc.(Get it from Google Play Store).
3. Connect your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to your PC employing the USB information cable. Copy the “ROM.zip” file you downloaded to the SD memory card.
4. Restart your device in the recovery mode using ROM Manager. As soon as in Recovery Mode, go to ROM Manager and select backup/restore to back-up your information.
5. From the Recovery Menu do a total data erase (including Delvik Cache). When completed, go back to Recovery Principal Menu and choose Flash ROM from SD Card. Navigate the location you copied the ”ROM.zip” file and follow the directions for installing Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . As soon as the installation is over, just reboot your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g device, and here you go, you’ve just upgraded it to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop.

did you tried it? Have you got root on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4G? I found out a thread with the root file/method, but the file link is broken

I don't understand why some prick upload all tools (root utility and ROMs) for Vodafone Smart Tab 4G to that disreputable server http://downloadsafe.org/? For download it want to send payment SMS messages!!!!! :crying:
If you want my opinion, i think that this supposed lollipop version is fake...
On another forum I've seen this and reports that it works.
I don't have the device (still deciding wether to buy it or not) so I can't test it

Yes, I've seen that link just a few minutes ago. I will try it tonight, since i don't have my tablet with me now.
Hi, this tutorial duben.org/android/vodafone-smart-tab-4g-root-navod is mine, I was wrote it yesterday in czech language, I hope pictures there are informative enough. In case you need rewrite it to english, let me know, I can take care of it.
Well it worked
But still impossible to use the SD card to install apps Nothing seems to work (app2SD, ...)

I have same issue. Apps can work with data on SD Card, for example RawDroid can edit photos, save/delete files. But App2SD functionality is still not supported. It should work with Link2SD app and 2 partitions on SD card. The reason is emulated external storage in internal memory. I didn't find yet how to turn this of, or how to change it.

I've tried Link2SD, but with no success. The best i got was to use MountFolder to move the applications data to the external SD card. With this, I've recovered some good precious space (for example, Minion Rush was using 330MB that where freed).

Thanks for tip FolderMount (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount) works like a charm.
If anyone wants the source code, here it is:
Code:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/alcatel/files/VF_SmartTab4G_20140923.tar.xz
It was awesome if we could get a rom for this tablet =)
People say it is based on Alcatel Pop 8S tablet, but I have never seen this tablet on sale, neither original roms, nothing about it.
Only alcatel website has some info about it, but not much: http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/products/tablets/pop_8s.html#.VOPaQfmsVoc
Anyone managed to remove system apps?
Titanium backup says it can't find the apks..
In Android 4.4, apps can't write the sd-card, it's a security thing. But there are apps, which enables sd write. And yes, we have source, but for ROMs we also need recovery, and a developer. But fingers crossed.

Anyone tried that? can you confirm that it works?
Any other method that roots 4.4.4?
Yes and it is work. Only "bug" after the root is: every time you reboot your tablet you will got a message that says android is upgrade-ing and continues to updating apps. But it is work.

I stuck on step 7. Finding device... But I did step 5...
What u mean updating apps.? Updates all apps from store?
No, optimezing. Its that thing when android take an update and after that the apps is optimezed. This happening after each reboot. About the root process: if you use win 8, 8.1 you wont be able to rootbso easly because of the drivers. Try with win xp or 7. My advice: use XP. I did it with it.

So, to get this straight: we can actually root the Vodafone smart tab 4g and flash custom roms??

How to root Samsung A3 (2017) - Guide

I successfully rooted my Samsung Galaxy A320FL following more or less this guide (I know, it's a video and that's annoying, but it's also very clear. And there is a text version linked in description), with some modifications though.
I will write here what differs / is not specified in that guide.
I also attach all the files I used; they can also be found on the internet with some search.
Make sure to have installed on your PC Samsung USB driver for mobile phones, available on Samsung website.
I used different versions of the files needed (that guide is for Samsung 8). With the following files, everything worked well:
twrp-3.4.0-0-a3y17lte.img.tar
no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip
RMM_Bypass_v3_corsicanu.zip (learned this from another guide on this forum)
Magisk-v20.4.zip
Once TWRP is installed, the guide instructs you to install no-verity, then reboot to recovery and immediately after that reboot to system; only later, transfer and install magisk. THIS MESSED UP everything, in my case at least.
The solution was even faster: once TWRP is installed
plug USB and transfer all needed files (listed above) at once
install no-verity and reboot to recovery;
install RMM_bypass and reboot to recovery;
install magisk and reboot to recovery
reboot to system
Now you proceed following the rest of the guide.
After rooting, you may want to fix a few problems you may encounter: see next post.
HOW TO FIX FINGERPRINT AFTER ROOT
When your Galaxy A3 is rooted, unfortunately fingerprint will not work properly to log in on your apps (but it will work to unlock your phone). To fix this:
install from Google Play a file manager (like Solid Explorer)
in the left menu select ROOT folder, then rename
/system/priv-app/SamsungPass_1.3/SamsungPass_1.3.apk
to
/system/priv-app/SamsungPass_1.3/SamsungPass_1.3.apj
remove /data/app/com.samsung.android.samsungpass-1
reboot
This will remove SamsungPass. You will not be able to use SamsungPass anymore on your rooted phone, so forget the ability of saving passwords on websites and confirm them with fingerprint (you can still save passwords in browser or use google autofill; you just can't confirm them with fingerprint).
But, with the method above, at least you will be able to use fingerprint to log in those apps which natively support fingerprint login (like banking apps).
HOW TO MAKE BANKING APPS WORK ON A ROOTED PHONE
...Banking apps, though, tend to stop working when they detect a rooted phone. You can try to fix this using Magisk Hide feature.
Open Magisk and tap on the shield icon
Tap MagiskHide
Check your bank apps and any other app that want to prevent from detecting root. (According to the guides I read, hiding too many apps can be a problem: stick to what is really needed).
HOW TO MOVE WHATSAPP MEDIA FOLDER TO SD CARD
This was the main reason why I decided to root my phone: I was running out of storage. So I bought a high-quality and fast sd card (yes, it deserves your 20 €) and did the following:
Download "Apps2SD" (the original by Vicky Bonick; it's free) and follow instructions on how to create partitions.
You can create upto 3 partitions: 1st fat32/exfat/f2fs/ext4/ext3/ext2 (it's your SD card), 2nd ext2/ext3/ext4/f2fs (it is used to link the apps), 3rd swap partition (it's optional).
IMPORTANT: With Apps2SD you can LINK apps (they will end up in 2nd partition) or use FOLDER MOUNT (the chosen folder will end up in 1st partition, the one that looks like your normal SD card).
Please note that for Whatsapp media folder you will use FOLDER MOUNT method: so it will end up in the 1st partition. Create the 1st partition large enough for your whatsapp media.
Use "folder mount (app analyzer)" feature: it's like folder mount, but it's pre-set for some common apps, including Whatsapp. With this feature, you can successfully move Whatsapp media folder to SD, in one clic.
To understand what folder mount means: see FAQ.
In my case everything worked fine. When I reboot I have to re-mount folder, but it takes one second (just open Apps2SD, tap Folder Mount, slide "whatsapp other").
By the way, with App2SD you can do much more: you can move virtually any app to your SD card using the "Link apps to SD card" feature, as explained in Vicky's video.
...Hope this will save you some time!

Thank you! I successfully used your compilation for a T-Mobile branded unit, all works after some tinkering. I didn't have the fingerprint problem, possibly the Samsung security thing is not the same on the carrier-modified ROM.
I had problems first making root work because of the succession of operations - basically, everything needs to be formatted in TWRP so it can mount partitions. Once I boot up the ROM, TWRP won't mount anymore → every zip you want to install, you need to do in one go before you reboot to Android.
I tried to root mine, but it didn't show up in odin, it did show up in device manager but I can't do anything with it, no transfering files via usb, etc.
The drivers are installed, I reinstalled them a couple of times, tried a different USB port, etc...
No sucess so far, I hope someone here can help me
