Hey guys, I'll start off by saying I don't know much about the Xperia ZL at all. It's my girlfriend's phone. She's having a really hard time with lag issues, some weird screen drag when she's swiping her notification tray and real battery drain issues. I wanted to maybe try installing a custom KK rom to see if it got rid of some of these issues. Or at least a custom recovery so I can play around and try things without fear of messing it up.
So I've been reading for the last couple hours and I'm having trouble finding a solid way to root or install CWM. Her bootloader is locked and she just updated to 4.4.2 a couple days ago. Seems there aren't many tutorials for this situation and I'm not experienced enough to piece older posts together myself. Does anyone have a clear, concise way of how I can root this phone and install a recovery for the C6506? I have installed flashtool but don't know how to use it really. Any help would be wonderful, thanks guys!

@ anagramgenius, your solution forces downgrade to 4.2.2. This does not address the question of rooting 4.4.2.

Yes, you can't root 4.4.2 directly. You have to do a downgrade, and that requires unlocking your bootloader. If you don't want to unlock it (or can't do it) search for NUTs method in the development section.

Downgrading DOES NOT require unlocking bootloader, you can flash Amy 4.1-4.4 ftf with an locked bootloader, but it must be a stock ROM. For rooting, the only way to root a locked bootloader is to downgrade to 4.2, exploit, install XZDualRecovery and update to 4.4 using a rooted stock zip and stripped ftf.

Thats right, thanks for making that clear.
But you need to unlock when flashing a modded kernel with recovery. The way to root you mentioned is described by NUT in this forum, that's what I meant.

Oh wow, managed to get rooted using this SO easily! Right on, you guys are the best. I'll look around but since I'm already here posting, does anyone know some good custom roms for this phone with a locked bootloader? Mostly finding roms that require an unlocked bootloader but I haven't searched too hard yet. Thanks again!!

Use this app. You should have USB debugging enabled. Download directly to your phone. And click "Make it rain". Then download super su from playstore. Then install nut's Philz recovery. Thats all. Enjoy...

Yo folks! Quick question; can I root my Arc with Gingerbreak?
It looks too easy
Do I need unlocked bootloader? (It isn't a problem, gonna do it anyways at some point, just wondering is it required to do first.)
Thanks!
Use zergRush, you don't have to unlock your BL.
Yes,it is possible.
but try any one of these...

Thank you guys! The actual rooting guide looked pretty complicated, and almost every guide the files were located in multiupload, and the site is down so...
Oh yeah, is CWM included in the exploit or do I need to install it later?

Install it via SE Extreme Tweaker or CWM Auto-Installer, if you're on locked BL.

I did a very stupid thing and I could kick myself. Without backing up my firmware, I updated my Xperia Play to build number 3.0.1.B.0.285, not realizing that I would lose my root priviledges. Does anyone know how I can downgrade to 3.0.1.B.0.270? Or is there a successful method to rooting 3.0.1.B.0.285?

Well the simplest way to downgrade is to use flashtool, as for rooting, you could check the development section to see if that build is rootable

So today after watching tutorial videos and reading about it I finally made my mind and decided to flash/root my xperia arc. The build no of my stock was .431 now what I did was download the '.431 ready to root ftf' and flashed my phone, now when I tried to root it it gave me several errors mkdir failed for tmp, File exists and rm failed for *, No such file or directory and to make thing worse the memory card messed up and I had to format it and lost all the data. Now I've recovered the phone using pc companion but I failed very badly
I have no idea what exactly did I do wrong?

Read the stickys, and the individual threads for instructions.
Go to setting after flash the ready to root 4.0.3. Click at xperia. Click connectivity. Click USB connection mode. Choose MSC. The default is MTP if i not mistaken. Then root your phone and flash back 4.0.4 kernel.
This method i using when i root my phone last week. Before that it was giving me so many error.
Im on LOCKED BOOTLOADER while doing that

Yes, after unlocking the bootloader flash a kernel, and then install a custom rom that's pre-rooted. Much easier way if you don't mind not sticking with stock.

Normally I use the Arcknight kernel (Get version 3.5.1 or 3.3 because 3.6 is broken), but since Sony released the new .587 build I'm sticking with this kernel for now.
Now with Roms I suggest you go with this one its really good .
Okay I just rooted it sucessfully but I kept the bootloader locked.
How do I flash Arcknight 3.5.4 on my locked bootloader?

If you're going to root then you might as well unlock the BL. If IceBean needs a custom kernel then you can't use it, if not follow the instructions.

Well I am coming from Nexus 4 where even if u have root + Custom recovery your device will be fine after OTA just you lose root & custom recovey gets replaced with stock one.
In case of G2 it may brick if you have custom recovery but only rooted device & u accept OTA then it's fine, provided that u have not messed with sys apps & removed them.. I have taken 2 ota on my G2 LS 980 while I was rooted.
I think u must be running something lke xposed or may be u have removed some of sys apps... otherwise u will be fine with OTA on a rooted device.

I tried doing a Nandroid backup so if any case I have issues I can revert back...Intalled Twrp manager but then the twrp recovery does not install at all. I then tried flashify and download the IMG but my mistake that it was a zip file so it was supposed to be flashed and I just used flashify and selected the file which gave me error and I thought my phone was bricked...thankfully, pressed the start button for sometime and it started in the normal mode....whew...
I guess I never will be able to upgrade....

That's not true. It means no kernels... There's things like safestrap that allow you to flash a ROM to a different partition, and select either stock, or (ROM name here) from initial boot-up.
The ROM is just the body of the car, (what we see), but to access the motor, (everything that makes what we see actually happen), that requires bootloader unlock ?.

We have no safestrap (developer bailed), loki, or bump. So no custom roms yet. Some devices cannot flash anything without unlocked bootloader. We have only had root a couple of days things will come. I should have been more clear in my previous post, I forgot this is XDA where everyone knows everything already.

Without custom recovery we may not get Xposed, hence no gravity box, but we can hope they get a non-recovery version working on the G4.
If you are rooted and run Xposed you NEED to freeze the OTA update checker, otherwise prepare for a bricked device after an update.
now what if I unroot?

Why would we need a custom recovery for Xposed? I only rooted my G3, nothing else, and I'm using G3 TweaksBox just fine.
All I need on the G4 is a new, updated TweaksBox and I'm good to go. Between that and titanium backup I have my G3 running perfect.

Currently Xposed for 5.1 requires you to flash it from a custom recovery. 5.0 was simply a file you installed.

We need a bootloader unlock or a workaround like bump on the G3, I haven't heard of any progress with this yet but I'd love to be proven wrong.
I think the main theme here is be patient. We could not have ANYONE working on anything for this phone. Root is awesome. Hopefully bootloader unlock is released soon.
I think the same patients. We just got root im sure they have been working toward a work around since the phone has been released. So eventually if its possible someone will find an exploit i just hope eventually they find something that works for all current versions.
