Battery Dies When Phone Is Off - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Well I Recently Bought A Laza ZCell Extended Battery For My Phone And I Ran Through The Calibration But I Noticed That The Battery Life Was Really Bad. I Wiped Phone And Flashed Embryo 6-11 And Charged It To 100. Turned It Off And 8 Hours Later Turned It Back On And It Was At 20%. I Then Decided To Test The Battery Alone So I Charged To 100 And Then Took It Out Of Phone And Waited For 7 Hours And Put It Back In And It Was At 98% So It Cant Be The Battery Going Bad. What Could Be Wrong With The Phone?

Please, get gsam from the play store and post some screen shots.
The main screen, app screen, and click drop down in app screen...and do time held awake.
For starters. Otherwise anyone trying to help is just taking wild guesses.
Also, was it on WiFi or data? Weak signal? That's a battery killer big time on data.
Good luck!

Oh...sorry. Dying with power off?
I'm going to say defective battery....or a phone hardware issue.
Off is off. The phone isn't draining battery when its off...at all. Tho battery will drop in slight steps....cause than just how it works.
But it cannot be software related anyway.

It can be the battery. It could be shorted out. And just by being in the phone (contacts in use) it could be draining itself. Or the phone has an issue similar.

When you say Turned it off do you mean Turned the screen off ..? Or did you power it off .. If you powered it off and the battery drained , then its a bad battery ... Either way I have had problems with extended batteries ... If the battery is the same size as the stock battery and its supposed to be an extended battery then most likely it is just labeled as extended ... The weight of the battery will tell the truth...I have bought batteries that were bigger in size and required a over size cover on the back of the phone and it performed worse than the stock battery.. If the price is too good to be true it probably is .. I AM NOT SAYING THIS TRUE FOR ALL BATTERIES..But it sounds like this is the case with yours ... Hopefully something else caused this and it was a one time thing... If the phone was just sleeping and not powered off then it was draining at 10 percent an hour which is really high.. Mine drains at about 1.5 percent an hour to 2% an hour with wifi on and data on ...If it was powered off and drained like that maybe wipe your battery stats ..You could have been getting a bad reading of the battery which especially if you just flashed a new ROM...Good luck let me know if you fix it and how the battery performs over time I might buy one

If your phone is powered off, screen shots done have anything because obviously they aren't running.
Or are you talking standby when you say "off"? Like screen off. Not completely powered off.

i mean completely powered off. the battery has gotten a bit better after some charge cycles. but its still dying pretty quickly regardless if its on or completely off. this is all while on airplane mode and having only wifi on
Also is there a way to check what the mAh of the battery is within the phone like an app ? .

If the phone is off, no app or widget will help, or tell you anything....cause the phone is off....so the app is off.

Battery care.. ...

I usually charge my battery every night when I sleep, an alarm app runs and twice a week titainuim backup runs.
Or is it better to only charge when needed, does a lot of charging have a negative impact on battery life.
Just received a new battery from the other post in the forum, was wondering how best to look after it

I don't charge my battery everyday. Just when i need it which is normally every 2 days and i also charge overnight. My alarm app also runs every morning (twice ) and on some occasions, like today, i charge in the morning because i have no school and my battery can last overnight. I try to make the most out of every single % of the battery.

Surely a good charge is around 6-7 hours?
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA
i try to charge my mobiles about 6-7 hours, but i make sure the battery is not getting warm. somewhere i read that wormth kills our batteries. its all about the chemical processes that take place in the battery. so high temperatures are distructive for it. so dont let it overheat. :good:

Horrible Battery! I just dont understand!

The first month this phone was great on battery... Its horrible now 3 months later! I shut off all the samsung stuff that suck up the battery. I have the screen power down to the lowest setting. Sometimes when i charge the phone is says its fully charged and when i unplug it its about 98%. Does this once and awhile. I've been playing a games for about 1.5 hours. The batter is about 40%. Is this normal?
10 minutes later i just checked the phone and now its down to 30%... wtf is going on with this battery?

1.) You should get Better Battery Stats from the Play Store so you can see what could be causing this battery drain.
2.) When you unplug your device and it shows 98% it's a good thing. It means that your fuel gauge is working correctly. We have a safety feature that helps the battery to never get over charged. It helps the battery last a lot longer. The way these batteries work is if it's constantly overcharged over an certain amount of time it would deplete the battery life.

you have something in the background going on. could be a rouge app. check Better Battery Stats.
A coworker of mine has a Galaxy III on ATT same as I do. She complained about her battery to me. We both opened our Elvision Battery Widget and saw that screen times and time on battery were within 30 minutes of each other (1hr 50m mine vs 2hr 15m hers). She had 73% and I had 95%; her widget said 38XXmv, mine said 4100 (I have more stuff on than her). I had her restart her phone just for the hell of it, then I flipped through her settings and TURNED OFF battery saver. The problem went away. I've never used the battery saver and my battery stays golden all day. That said there's no telling if the restart did more for the phone than turning off the battery saver. I told her to turn on battery saver for 2 hours this weekend and see what it does. Will keep everyone posted.

Are you on stock?
Stock ICS on my S3
I'm rooted on stock ICS...
Google Now is a huge battery drain from my experience.
I'm rooted stock. No battery issues in fact gs3 has some of the best battery life I've seen second only to my hoxl.
Download autostart fromvthe market.
Find out what's running at os startup.
Disable. Things like googleplay, Googlemaps etc. Don't need to start up.
In fact the only thing required is integral Os components. At start up, I have alimost everything Google disabled.
None of your maps need time start when boot. None of them. Keep in mind I'm talkin aps like ....anything AT&T... w/e you dl'd from market.
Also go through and disable bloatware.
This will help. check your battery. It should be flat or slightly concaved. If it's bulging even slightly get a new one.
Report back and let us know.

Does LTE really drain battery that much?

I will leave my phone alone for about two hours and when I check back there will be 25% battery gone. Is this normal? Should I report back after I've used the phone for a week or so? I just got the phone this weekend.
Lte does drain battery very fast but I don't think that is normal. Are you in an area of poor coverage? You could also have a wake lock. You can check for wake locks with better battery stats.
LTE will only drain battery during use so that isn't your problem.

Ah I see. Well, my phone died before my work shift was even over. It must be whatever the wake lock thing is. Once I get this resolved I'll love this phone!
Better Battery Stats will help you pin point the wake lock. Post screen shots of this app if you don't understand how to read it.

Will do. So far after a full recharge after my battery was dead I had it just sitting on my desk for about 40 minutes and it was still at 99%. I'll leave it uncharged while I sleep and see how it is doing in the morning and I'll post the stats.
Hmmm, it seems that from overnight (About 7 hours) it has drained about 9%. Is this normal? I'll see how it does through work today and I'll report back tonight. It doesn't seem to be draining as much as it did before.

Seems I overlooked calibrating the battery with a power run out since it is a new phone. It seems me letting it run down fixed my problem. Its been about 3 hours and I'm only down about 4%. I'll still monitor it every 2 hours or so and post the results at night.

Yup...that's totally normal for a healthy stock battery without any major mods or tweaks.
That's about 1.29% per hour.
If you want to get that number down closer to .5% per hour, try an app called Green Power. You can set it to turn off wifi/data when your screen is off. You can tell it to wait say 30secs before it does this.
Then you can tell it to enable wifi/data at "screen on" or at "screen unlock".
If you don't use push mail etc., this is a good option to keep your battery drain minimal in standby. You can also choose this behavior for night time only. And...you can choose apps to go into the "exceptions" list...a a whole bunch more fine tuning.

[Q] Just bought the 8.4" it shuts down during wall charge?

I'm using original charger and I'm forced to shut down when ever I plug in charger. I tried other usbs and same thing happens, I can't use it while charging?
Also I charged it overy night to 100% turned it on about 30 mind later and it was at 92%....what's going on?
Thanks guys!

I think I'll exchange it if it's still doing the same thing I'll just get the nexus 7 again or the pro:--( but I like how thin this is
Edit:
I exchanged it, it seems to charge fine now while using it. It was a defective battery.

Battery Loss

I have noticed in the past 3 weeks that my phone rapidly discharges. I have done a factory reset, uninstalled programs that i really don't need, and moved a lot of apps to SD card and i am still losing power faster than i was in say April or even July this year.
Anyone else experiencing this? Not rooted BTW.

Okay so I can tell that the initial drop is a bit unusual because even on my S8+ when I unplug the phone from around 8:30 A.M (100%) it drops 1% around 10:00 A.M. or 10:30 A.M (This is with AOD on) and the overnight drain also seems unusual cause for me I face like a 5 - 6% drains due to my social media apps always retrieving notifications.
But try giving this app a try and see:- Servicely It may help you save up some battery. But before you try this app I suggest Like Re-calibrating your battery, the best way to do this would be to fully charge the battery and then drain the battery till it automatically switches off, repeat this 2 - 3 times and then give the app a try

Thank you for the advice. Funny enough, this week I have been making it go all the way down to 6% or so before I recharge it. Also, screen broke in July so this phone is literally 2 months old as I got it July 5th as a replacement. Brand new and in the beginning I was so impressed with the battery usage. Since then, it has fallen off dramatically! I keep hoping an update will change it but not yet, the last one last week for facial recognition, etc did nothing for the battery.
I will try and recalibrate it over the weekend/next week.
Thanks.

No pb, before having an S8+ I had a OnePlus 2 and I was having some battery issues, so the normal battery calibration helped solve the problem for a few months until I bought a new battery for it. And we'll have to hope that Oreo would optimize the battery life

Update: Since I posted this, it was determined by Verizon that the unit was to be changed out. I got the new unit and so far(fingers crossed) I am getting about 2 days out of 1 charge. I liked the suggestion about recalibrating the battery. I am now losing 3-4% overnight when the unit does "sleep". Much better than the 10+% it was losing before. Not sure what was killing it but thanks to all the suggestions out there. I will see if there is any improvement when we get Oreo update.
