SD Card Issues - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
Two weeks ago I bought a new Samsung MicroSDHC Pro 64GB Class 10. Kinda from the beginning it wasn't working how it should.. I formated it EXT4, exFat and FAT32 but all give the same problem.
For example; I copy a flashable zip on my external sd card, copies just find, but as soon as I try to flash from the external sd card I keep getting an error and the flash failed, almost instantly. If I copy and flash the same file to my internal sd card, it works just fine and no problems what so ever.
I tried formatting it through Sense, GPe and even a USB card reader.. all give me the same issues. I can even make a titanium backup and it seems to work. Tho, as soon as I try to restore from it, it won't find the files from the backup..but when I check the external sd card on my pc (phone connect to pc by htc usb cable) the files are there and it seems the correct size. But when I want to try a batch restore in titanium backup, and I look the phone for backup folders, it finds the foder.. but when I actualy wanna start the batch recovery, it only sees 1/2/3 apps to restore, even tho there are over 70 apps to restore.
I'm at a loss at the moment, I feel like I've tried everything and nothing seemed to work. This is what the error looks like when trying to flash from external sd card:
E:Unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/external_sd/blablabla/blablabla.zip'
Updating partition details
Hope anyone could help me with the issue.
Thanks in advance<3

I've seen in the past that 64gb cards have issues with formatting unless formatted in windows as Fat32 - mine did
As soon as I did that it worked.

Have you checked it to make sure it's not fake? Where did you buy it from & what is the formatted capacity? Should be like 59gbs and change

Got it from a dutch website, through a person, not a company.. it had all legit packages etc, but how can I check to be 100% sure that it's real?
My computer shows it has 62,4GB total capacity.. reading it from card reader. Sounds wrong?

Deffo wrong. Sounds like a fake. Capacity is 64gb. Available is obviously lower after formatting. Legit packages mean nothing - take a look here

I would return it asap

upgrading micro sd card

Hey guys I just wanted to ask u all a question bout upgrading sd cards on the Evo. I just purchased a Lexar 32gb class 10 sd card from Amazon. I still hav the stock 8gb card that has all my data....music,movies,music videos, custom roms, kernals amd so on. I hav heard that some people are having problems with changing their cards. So my question is what is the proper procedure to getting this transfer to be successful. Is it better to format new card thru windows or phone? Do I need to partition the new card? What is the easiest procedure to transfer my 8GB card stuff to my new 32gb card. The reason Im asking is I dont want to corrupt the new card in anyway...as u all kno they are NOT CHEAP!!! I just want the transition to workout smoothly with NO problems. Any advice wud b much appreciated. Thanks Yall!!! Evo runnin MikFroyo v4.61 w/ netarchy-toastmod-4.3.4-cfs-havs-more-nososbc...overclocked to 1152mhz.
Copy the contents of your current card onto your computer or an external drive. Shutdown your device. Remove your current card and replace it with your new card. Make sure your device supports the 32 GB size. Reboot your device. Many cards already come formatted, however, it wont hurt to reformat it to be sure. When your phone finish booting up, go to the SD card and phone storage setting within the menu. Select unmount SD card. After it unmounts, the option to format it will appear. Select format. When finished, select mount. Back out of that menu back to your homescreen. Connect your device via USB to your computer or external drive and transfer the items you copied to your newly formatted card. Reboot your device when you're finished. You can also format from your computer and from within recovery. Take your pick.

If am not wrong EVO supports max 16 GB and EVO Shift is 32 GB
^You're mistaken, the EVO does support the 32gb.
Says so on the HTC support page for EVO
Whew, you had me scared for a moment... I just ordered the same 32 gb microSD this morning. :]
I've been through 2 lexar 32gb cards. Within a matter of weeks to days, I was getting data corruption. Not sure if it's limited to the lexar class 10 cards, or any class 10. It would appear to function fine at first. At some point during the day i'd go to check my email and get a sd card mounted in read only mode message on the status bar. Rebooting would usually not help. Had to hook up the phone to the pc, mount the sd in recovery, then run a chkdsk. I'd typically get many many corrupted files.
Now mind you, i'm always careful to shutdown properly, only mount the sd when recovery. I've come to the conclusion that there is some incompatibility issue either due to the size, or perhaps lexar's ability to be downward compatible with the slower speed devices (I think the evo can only take advantage of up to class 6 devices).
Lets hope you have better luck than I did, but after multiple corrupted files, I'm back with the stock card, which has caused no issues at all (besides being low on space).
i have 32g patriot class 10 card and it works great for me. i just transfered my old sd card stuff onto my computer via the card adapter it came with. i inserted and formatted my new card into my phone. and transfered everything from my computer tomy phone via usb.
Ditto on the formatting with the phone. Since i am using ext, it had to be via the phone as I don't have the right tools to do it in windows.
FWIW, with the initial lexar card, there were no problems for nearly 3 weeks. With the replacement card they sent me, issues started showing up 2 days later. Could be my phone is less tolerant of media quality than others..
one thing you need to remember when copying the files, is to hit the option to see the the hidden files on your sd card, if you dont your phone will have glitches because it will be missing those files, because when they are hidden they dont get copied
Hate to hijack here but it's along the same lines.
If I don't listen to music or take a bunch of pictures what if any difference will I notice upgrading my class? Sorry I am coming from a Vibrant that had 14gigs internal and the sc card was purely optional.
I was thinking about just getting an 8 gig class 10 if it would make a difference.
pc to dupe sd card?
Could you just copy the sd card using an adaptor to your pc hard drive, then copy the files onto the larger sd card, again using the adapter in the pc. then install the new sd card into the phone? I am new, to this, i'm just askin.
blairan...I think you wud b safe to do that but u must format the new sd card first via phone(itself) or thru windows before any transfer of data is made. My question was simply that I hav read that many people hav had complaints bout corrupted files being present thru their new cards. Or problems with "read only" errors and not being able to access things on the card. If u are rooted and are running a custom ROM that allows Apps2sd to help free up internal memory on ur phone then u wud also need to partition the card as well to allow that. I just dont understand why their have been so many people having these problems with the 32g class 10 cards.
blairan...Im pretty sure u wud be safe to do that but if it is a new card u must make sure it is formatted first via phone itself or windows before u transfer anything to it. My question was simply I dont understand why so many people have complained bout corrupted files and or read-only errors on the 32g class 10 cards. Problems that seem to arise days or weeks later after installing new cards. I wud really like to get to the bottom of it and find out why.

If anything, you'd probably notice quicker loading from apps that you've moved to the SD card. But admittedly, video, music, and photos are the places you'd see the most tangible improvement.
Doug,
I've tried this several times (I think I'm up to double digits, now) on my rooted Evo running the stock ROM. After I transfer all the files and reboot, several apps are not installed and the phone says it has a low amount of space. I've tried restoring a Clockwork Mod backup as well and I get the same thing. I have everything backed up in Astro, but when I try to install the missing apps, the low memory issue prevents them from being installed. Should I remove all my apps and start over? Should I un-root my phone and do a factory reset? I'm so frustrated I'm about to do the latter.
I'm upgrading to a 32GB class 10 card and I just can't figure it out. Any thoughts?

No, you do not need to unroot, but I do recommend you start from scratch. Since you already have the contents of your card backed up to your computer, go into recovery and re-partition and re-format your card. In amon_RA select "partition SD card" from the main menu. You will be prompted to set a size for 3 different things. Insert a zero each time. Doing so will allow you access to your entire card. Afterwards, copy the rom you want to use to the card via the MS-USB or the Mount USB option, if using ClockworkMod and flash it. Your paid apps will be listed in the Market after you've logged in with your credentials. Your unpaid apps will have to be redownloaded and reinstalled unless you have them backed up to Google's servers or backed up with Titanium Backup. Anyway, you will have a clean install of your rom, a clean install of your apps and a freshly formatted and partitioned SD card. If you still get the low memory error afterwards then I am assuming you have too many apps on your internal memory and thus, you will need to move many of them to your SD card to free up your internal memory. There are tutorials available to learn apps2sd. Anyway, I hope this helps you.

Same issue here: did you update ROM to 4.3 version? I read that it could contain a setting within the platform.xml file that you find into system/etc/permission folder. See this
I tried it but with no success.
I hope you're luckier
Btw i sent it back to Amazon asking for refund (and they agreed). Bye

I warn you trying this setting. I tried this >>> Editing .XML file. I started getting severe force closes especially Google Frame Work Services. Even reverting did not help. Had to use my Nandroid Backup to go back.
4.3 is sucking so far for 64 GB External SD Card write support. Titanium Backup & Helium both apps can not do automatic scheduled Backups on External SD Card since 99% of the time they do not get Write Access. Only way to do an external SD Card backup is manually after rebooting the phone, even that is hit n miss.

I agree with you. 4.3 is still far from 64Gb SD Card support, and I know that editing this file can be dangerous, but I read that someone was able to restore his card and due to its cost was worth a try. During my tentative, this update didn't have effect (but at least I didn't get more troubles).
Same issue.
64GB SanDisk card from my Note 3 (search brought me here) became read only after 5 months.
I've ended up sending it under warranty back to SanDisk.
I'm glad I didn't loose anything as I've backed it up but still don't like the idea of returning something with a lot of my data and photos I can't delete.
may have found solution

I was having the very same problem. I finally went into the computer management, and was about to throw phone across room....when I tried to format one last time. This time I unchecked the quick format. It is taking longer, but seems to be working...I am keeping fingers crossed.
Full Format has finished and card is saved! Hope this helps anyone in the future.

[Q] External SD Card Read-Only Problem

I tried researching this but wasn't successful finding same exact problem or solution. I'm on 4.4.2 Baseband N900TUVUCNB4 rooted with stock rom and ext sd fix. Everything was working fine until recently. My external SD card has inexplicably become read-only, both on the phone and on my desktop. I first noticed this last week when the phone camera began having problems writing to external SD card, and now I can't sync music to card. I've tried formatting on the phone and desktop, both quick and full but no dice. On the phone, I am able to delete individual files or folders but they reappear. On the PC, I can view but get write protect message when trying to format. Anyone else come across this or have suggestions?

Happened with me once with a different phone/OS. Weird thing is that it was only for a particular SD card. I put a different card and it worked.
It turned out to be a problem with the card (dunno how thats possible though).
What's the brand of your SD card?
I have the exact same problem with my SGNote 2 and SanDisk 64gb micro SD card. First I lost some pics I have taken that day. I searched through with a file rescue tool but they were nowhere to be found. Deleted files reappear, and the ones I copied from internal SD dissappear.

It's a SanDisk 64gb class 10.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Maybe we can share the solution when we find one. I'm using internal memory in the meantime for new media files, but frustrated that I am not able to use the rest of the memory available on my card.
SanDisk works fine for me, maybe your sd card is a faulty one, let's wait for a while here and maybe someone could answer your question and hopefully solve your problem

Thanks, Lorettaa. It seems like that's the only option right now, since I can't find any other info about it on XDA. I know Kit Kat has that design "flaw" where apps can't write to an SD card, but I can't even write to it, modify it or reformat it on a PC. I have full read access to every file, just can't do anything else

I have the exact same problem, i tried many options , used some softwares in windows to format , wipe, fix, modify. nothing works.
One possible reason for this problem is file system errors , which can be rectified using the 'error checking' option in windows and 'fixing the file system errors'
But that doesnt solve my problem, even after formatting using advanced softwares, the sd card is the same - no files deleted, no files added...
The fat as well as ext4 parition is not formattable now in anyway.so the possible conclusion is 'sd card is going to fail'.. Take a backup before you loose the read capability.
Recuva is a good, free tool (from the people that make CCleaner) to deleted recover photos.

And one possible reason for a false error condition is a corrupt system. This is normally an unlikely possibility but it is very likely on devices that have had partition images written to (i.e. a flashed ROM). If you have done all you can to the SD card and if the errors are not only on one SD card then wipe everything and load a backup. If you still get errors then wipe everything and revert to stock to see if they still occur.

[Q] MicroSD woes

Hey there.
So, I have this wonderful HTC M8. Love it. It's great. Except for my experiences with microSD cards. Basically, I bought a $30 samsung µSD, 64gb, great, wonderful, everything. Something killed it. It lost its formatting every time I mounted it in either Android or Mac OS. So, I returned it, bought a different brand (unbranded, 64gb, $10). This card works great... as long as I don't write data to it from anything except Android. I'm rooted/S-off, so I was able to mount it as RW with ES File Explorer, and yeah. But whenever I copy files to its root directory from my Mac, Android proudly declares that the card is damaged and needs to be reformatted. At this point, I'm going to assume that this isn't a problem with my card, and more a problem with how Android handles things (or how I'm writing files). What the hell is going on, and how can I fix it?
Thanks!

I have problems too with my microSD. I backup to my mSD, whether with TWRP or CWM, and it always fails to restore. I've re-formatted it and I've had the same problem with the dialogue "Damaged .... needs to be reformatted."
Did you ever figure out the problem?
Don't compress the backup
I have no problems writing to, backing up to SD Card from PC or phone. Not sure while you're experiencing your issue but with root and a root file manager, all should be fine.

Yeah, I can backup to. I just can't do a restore from the mSD. It's weird. Maybe because I formatted it on a Mac, but it was done with MSDOS (FAT). I'll try formatting it on a PC and see if that works.
Format it with your phone.
I'm having different SD card issues, Zoe won't work with my sd card, its a sandisk ultra 64gb class 10 UHS-1 and it says I need a higher class card with at this moment is impossible.
I formatted mine with my phone to try resolve it but made it worse, it formatted it to HTFS/NTFS and when i checked what the storage was like on it, it only read that it was a 10gb card, but my computer picked it up as a 64gb card, so try not to use the phone to format it. I went back to it being fat32 with an app from the playstore, can't find any apps to format it as exFAT though.
Other than that mine is fine.

Writing to sd card restrictions were placed by Google in KitKat 4.4+ versions as a part of 'system enhancements'. I have rooted my M8 and the following three things worked for me:
1. Buy San Disk or another reputed brand card (authentic, fake/generic one gave me the same error message). Generic one are flimsy and often will give you an error message that card was unmounted unexpectedly.
2. Removing write-off protection, see the process at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701816
3. If above two methods still give you the same issue, try formatting the card in fat32 format. It will limit the each file size to 2GB but at least will make the card usable (use this only after trying item#1 & 2).
Good luck.

Suddenly Getting SD Card Unexpectedly Removed Error

Been working fine for over a month now all of a sudden the SD card appears to be randomly mounting/unmounting itself and has become unreadable on my phone.
I've put the SD card in my PC and it works fine so I suspect my phone has developed a fault. I hope I don't have to get an exchange as it's otherwise faultless and I'm dreading getting a unit that can't be S-Off'd
I haven't modified or installed anything prior to the fault developing,
Any tips would be most welcome.

Copy everything off sd card. Convert to fat 32. Copy everything back.

Stock but rooted and S-Off'd
I've not tried a reset yet but it's been as good as gold until about an hour ago when it suddenly started flashing between "preparing SD card" & "SD card unexpectedly removed"

I'll give that a go but why has it been working fine for over a month whilst exFAT if that is now the cause?

well, a simple solution is to enter recovery and see if the sdcard works there if this way it works, change the rom/perform factory reset, if this doesn't, well, you might try to flash everything again, but i's possible that the sd slot is broken...
i wish you all the luck, let me know
I would copy EVERYTHING off the card to a PC and do a format and try a different file system. I would has perform the format on the phone, to make sure its gets formatted to the correct file systems.
Long story short, It sounds like you memory card is starting to get Corrupted. I have to SanDisk cards that started doing that in the biginning and ended up not being read at all on PC nor the Phone.
Also while its doing that, youll also notice the battery start to drain more, at leasst thats what happended on my Note 3 when I had the san disk cards going corrupt.
Ended up buying new Card and now everything is fine.
I doubt is the card reader built in phone, more then likely its your memory card going corrupt.

I agree most likely the card. I'd download an sd card format tool and do a full format, don't use Windows format then do full check for bad sectors. I had a similar problem and it was the card at fault, but strangely worked ok on the pc.

I have been through many a Samsung phones and always had corrupt sd cards in exfat. One day I saw a thread that said convert to fat32 and have never had a problem since.

Thanks for all the advice.
I could read the card in recovery but it failed to format there.
I tried to format in windows but my only options were NTFS or exFAT, no FAT32. But this failed anyway also.
Downloaded a SD format application but this said the card was write protected and to move the lock switch, obviously MicroSD has no switch like standard SD.
So next I deleted all the files on the card and ran h2testw test. This failed and reported card is probably faulty.
Then I checked the contents of the card again and all the original files were back again, so it's definitely 'Donald Ducked'. I was able to get all my files backed up and fortunately I had my photos already thanks to Dropbox & G+.
So I will now look at getting MyMemory to replace it but my fear is they will want me to return the faulty card but it has sensitive information on it that I can't delete. Any ideas on how I can wipe it?

How did you attach the card to the pc? Try a usb card reader and then try again. If still problems download mini partition tool (Google) and delete the partition. You can then wipe it properly.
I reformatted the SD card from the settings within the phone and since then it been working fine :\
make sure you're using 2.0USB also..
when i connect my phone to charger
Its been few days i am noticing when i conmect my phone to charger it says 'sd card removed unexpectedly or either it suddenly stops showing content from my phone, then i have to go to settings unmount/mount the sd card frkm storage option and then it shows the content even when charging, or sometjmes it doesn'fshow option for that so on that case i have to restart my phone. What could be the possible reason and solution to that. It was fine on 4.4.4 now i am on 5.0.2 all stock htc one m8 h/k edition with sim unlock and s-off via sunshine.
