How Is Remote PC? - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

I'm about to make the plunge and buy a Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 in the next few days (BTW there's a deal on Samsung's website that gives you the Samsung keyboard case that retails for $130 for free with the Tablet). Anyways, I was wondering how really good the Remote PC feature is on the Note 12.2. Is it lagfree, how is browsing on it if possible. And can you download files onto the PC with the app and then transfer it to your tablet? It sounds like a great app in theory I wanna know how good it is in real life usage.

Its pretty good, only tried it quickly the other day. Browsing is fine, videos do lag a bit. Not sure about the downloading, i just use dropbox for that.

Thanks for the response. So if I streamed a YouTube video on the app, it would lag a lot huh? I'm not expecting a lot from it but at least having no lag would be a starting point haha.

Its not really bad lag but quite a bit slower then if you are watching on your pc. I think thats standard for any remote pc solution though.

I tried out remote pc but prefer teamviewer
And its free. Seems to work faster and smoother fwiw

[Q] Should I get this phone ?

Hi everyone !
Expansys sells SIM Free Xperia Play for 229 € and I ordered one rather quickly, stock is expected for next week but I have some questions...
I read some reviews of the phone all over the internet and even topics here on XDA, but I'd like to get recent opinions of persons having the XP for quite a long time, and with the last updates, I didn't see any new reviews of the phone.
1. Gaming: I'm a old school gamer and emulation is my first motive for buying this phone. Are emulators (Arcade, GBC, GBA, Genesis, SNES, PSX, N64) working flawlessly with XP gamepad ?
2. Web browsing: My primary concern is the scrolling/zoom smoothness (especially with default browser, the Nexus S I have at the moment is a shame for that, and I don't like much Opera Mobile as I always find it longer to load pages...). The second is the ability to see any flash content, mostly streaming videos (not HD content of course !). How is the XP performing ?
3. System "snappiness", boot, and battery life: I have read that they were annoying quirks and lags while booting, navigating through the phone and starting apps, is that still true ? And what can I expect from battery life with normal/heavy usage (Though I never spend more than 10 hours without going back near a plug) ?
4. Touchscreen responsiveness: How is it performing ? I have read it was jerky. Was it just bad luck of the guy reporting it ?
5. Network, Calling, Messaging... 2G/3G/WiFi: Are we all good here ? It's still a phone so it's important anyway
Thanks a lot for reading, and sorry for the bad english ! Any answer is welcome !

The boot time on Stock Rom is the only thing you should worry about. Depending on your amount of bloatware, boot can take 3-5 minutes, but is less than 1 minute on CM7

With the 2.3.3 uptade, boots are faster than previous rom.
It's the best phone to play.
I'm an alod school gamer too (I had to use my previous HD2 with a wii wireless classic controller), I use daily a lot of emulators wich are gamepad compatible (nesoid, snesoid, gearoid, genoid, fpse, n64oid, ataroid) and it's really nice !
i also use PSXPERIA with psx games and it works very well!
There's no problem with other functionality such as phone, wi-fi, .... They all do their jobs as they have to.
Surfing is quite fast and nice, flash support is OK and quite smooth.
Don't have any problem with network detection (Orange France). 3G is all the time connected and quite well detected when available (think won't be so easy for you because Bouygues network is not the best).

The touch screen is slightly unresponsive when you leave the stock screen protector on it. but it isn't bad. in fact, i didn't remove it.
Sounds like this is the phone for you
1. No other phone can even come close to this when it comes to emulating. All the emulators support key mapping so all work perfectly with the control pad.
2. Web browsing is good, supports zoom while panning, scrolling is smooth on most web pages, and it's fast. I don't view much flash but the flash I have seen is always fine.
3. The phone is snappy as hell. After deleting the bloat, and installing a custom kernel, which allows overclock, my phone has zero lag. None, I can bounce between apps super fast and without any wait at all. Boot time is comparible to the iphone 4's.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKsR8xyFz9A
This is a video I made to show the nonsense of the other video, but it works for letting you know exactly how long it takes to boot.
4. Touch screen is nice and responsive. The only times I find it gets a little weird is when my fingers are all sweaty, like after wearing gloves. But this is normal for capacitive touch screens.
5. I get better reception than my old HTC legend, so yes, it's no slouch as a phone. Texting is just like texting on other phones. Wifi works great, super fast download speeds.
Thanks for all your replies ! This sounds great ! I'm so impatient now !
Finally a mobile device allowing me to do everything I like, I waited that for years !
speedyink saved me the post, for which I thank him.
You're not the only one who has been waiting for this kind of phone like a godsend. In particular people who don't make heavy use of the phone features are happy with it.

hi there,
I'm also one of those who bought a 230 euro xperia play from expansys and craving for it to arrive
In the meantime i did browse through here a little and there's something that concernes me. I'm coming from a good old xperia x10 and i loved every inch of it, my questions about the play are:
1)I've been reading that it has some issues with accelerometer and compass. I suppose that is going to make google maps/navigation a mess? Is it still good enough or the xperia play in that matter is actually WORSE than my X10?
2) stupid question, but what about custom roms/kernel? I've seen that there aren't many of them and most are still in development, which do you suggest (apart from stick to stock rom)?
thanks in advance!

u only pay vat in the uk dont u? ive never payed it for imports into australia.
You are right about vat for the UK. Hope they ship to Australia and no custom duty is charged there. Unbelievably low price for the greatest mobile i have known.

Regarding Web browsing, other phones like HTC,sgs2 are way faster. The zoom is great though,as is the scrolling. It takes more time to load the webpages though.
Battery life is good, you will get through a day with 2 hours per day
The touchscreen i dislike compare to Iphone or SG,hopefully a custom kernel can fix that...
Those are the things i dislike,but i wanted a PSEmulator first,then phone

If this is your first motive then immediately buy this phone! I've tried multiple phones (touch screens and qwerty keyboard models) and this is by far the best one for emulation.
Haven't tried all consoles yet as I'm a fan of the 16-bit era, but SNESoid and Gensoid work flawlessly with any rom I've thrown at them so far. They also allow you to save emulator state, add cheats and take screenshots. N64oid is supposed to be good too, but haven't tried that one yet and for PSX you can use FPSE. Since N64 works GBA and GBC should be no problem. Arcade probably depends on the game you want to play, because newer games require more power obviously.

[Video demo] Connectivity - USB OTG, MHL, RDP, bluetooth keyboard/mouse/gamepad!

Thought this might interest owners and potential owners:
Incidentally, tried Splashtop after the video over 3G whilst out and about today - amazing! Watched a video with sound - playback was smooth. Hardly any lag via 3G in a reasonable coverage area. Also installed an antivirus to my laptop and did some other useful stuff while I was having a coffee at Bunnings - RDP on a 1280x800 screen is awesome.
I should be receiving a USB DAC in the coming week too, so will update as to whether that works or not...
UPDATE: USB DACs do NOT work with the USB OTG feature (as expected). Shame, because the cheapy one I got today sounds amazing compared to my laptop and desktops sound cards! The one I have is a HiFiMAN Express available from here for only $40. Not really for audiophiles, but for those who can appreciate better quality at a fraction of the price these are very good (I think Gizmodo linked to an audiophile review of them where he said they were 70% as good as the sound put out my a $400 sound card, not bad for what the HiFiMAN costs).

sorry,

Thank you very much for this post. This pretty much seals the deal for me. I will be grabbing one soon.
After watching your video, it looks like I need to find me a nice 20"-23" LED HDMI monitor to go with my Note.
Thank you for this awesome video.
Disappointed to the fact that USB hubs don't work, specially because someone in the forum answered me to this same question saying "yes"
In fact my question was if a SB keyboard and a USB mouse can work together using a USB hub.
Could you please confirm this case?
Thnks!

Hey there, sorry if it wasn't clear in the video - the hub itself works fine, its just that using the hubs external power source to power portable HDDs that the Note can't supply enough power to on its own doesn't work (it does in the SGSII). I presume that KB and Mouse would work together with a hub, but unfortunately I can't confirm as I don't own models that are compatible with the Note (or the SGSII).
If anyone in Auckland has some that are compatible I'd love to try this out for people.

I can confirm that Keyboard and Mouse together work well on SGS2 using powered USB hubs, however its very unstable and sometimes freezes the phone. Hope it becomes better with ICS.
Do you mean that external HDD's can be powered by SGS2? I never thought its possible, seems I need to test that again as my HDD is NTFS formatted so wasn't recognized the last time I tried.

No, the SGSII can't supply external HDDs - I was saying that they do work with the SGSII when connected to a hub that has it's own power supply (that doesn't seem to work in the Note however...).
I don't own a hub but I was able to use a 120 gb external 2.5" USB hdd on the note with external power.
The hdd came with a y cable for additional power supply. I just used the note charger to supply power.
I had to format the hdd with fat32 of course. Win7 wouldn't do it, not with GUI and not on command line.
A app did it http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm.
Another thing was to make 1080p movies playable from the fat32 hdd. I used mkvtoolnix to split the movie into 4gb files.
https://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/
With diceplayer I was able to play them without any problems.
What resolution does your laptop run at? When I installed splashtop (phone version), I get set to 1024x720 resolution (looks crappy), while my home PC is 1600x1200. I wonder if splashtop HD would allow me to use the native resolution of my PC (1600x1200)? Any way to install HD apps on the Note?
I set my laptop to run at the same resolution as Splashtop when I'm not at home (otherwise it runs in 1080p).
Don't worry, Splashtop are working on a release version for HD phones (probably just an update to the phone Splashtop) and it'll be available soon - I've been in contact with them recently.

Thanks for this thread. Very good information.
But I think it's a bit annoying that it's not 'real' upscaled HD, but just the resolution of the Note (1280x800) being outputted to the screen.
I think Splashtop technically looks very good. But I don't like the security - it seems there is not any encryption in the software, not even the passwords!
What bandwidth does Splashtop require over a 3G connection to be stable? And how intelligent is the streamer to figure out which quality to stream in, in order to get the optimal dynamic stream without lag/pauses ?

Not sure what bandwidth it requires over 3G for stability, I was in a reasonable reception area at the times I've used it over 3G - may have been the amount of bandwidth on offer but the experience was really great with minimal lag (bad upload for my PC at home is the rate limiting step here).
Must be some other Splashtop users here who can chime in?

Yes, they do, tried one today. Some USB mice also work, will try and connect both with the hub when I get home and see how that goes.
Will also revisit HDD connectivity too, as I have a second note Rooted with CF Root - possible that the drives weren't working because of Netchips kernel (in the same way that WiFi tether was broken).
Great video
Iwas surfing around for a page that ensures this device has definitely tv-out feature. I could not be sure for it, cause at most of the pages promoting galaxy note, it is not being said exactly..
Anyway, found here, and watched your video. now I want a galaxy note even 10 times more..

Selling nexus 10 for surface, but should I wait?

I am a long time android "fanboy" but work in a Microsoft world! . I have to admit I have really liked the surface...I am selling my nexus 10 to get one, I did see that staples will be selling them for 350ish in a week or so, but should in wait until the surface 2?
Will it come out this year? Rumors say yes, but you know how that goes... Anyways just looking for input.. Get one at the price drop or wait?
Are they dropping the price to thin out the stock?
Thanks

They didn't mention a Surface 2 at Build, which would have been the obvious time to do it. Plus I think they gave the Build attendees Surface Pros. In the past they've gotten prerelease stuff. If there was a Surface 2 coming out anytime soon it would have gotten some attention. I think you're getting a Surface now.
Tk
I'd buy one all day at that price - best thin client tablet available. Only thing lacking is in games - if your a tablet gamer, there are no gameloft, or EA games to speak of - all the other stuff is there (angry birds, fruit ninja, temple run, pinball, etc), but for me, the gameloft and EA games are the only ones id pay for, and they are non-existent.
I was hoping to sell mine for 400, and get the Surface 2 when it comes out, but looks like you can get one for less brand new. Plus no one knows when the 2 will be out, could possibly have to wait till holiday season, which is months away.

I play some games, but primarily I use it for web surfing, forums, email... that kind of stuff... I love my nexus 10, but would like a better web browsing experience. I don't want to constantly have to change it to desktop mode.... would like desktop web browsing experience (FLASH) on a tablet.... that is clean and fast!
I don't think I can go wrong picking one up for $350, I think they are only doing it for one week, so if after a few weeks im hoping I could still get 400 for it.... i wish they had more info on a release date for the surface 2... I would definitely hold out for one if they were coming this year... Thanks for you input...

If that's all your using it for, then RT is your device - flash support built in, and with 8.1 you get outlook - but to be honest, I actually prefer the modern mail app because it is more touch friendly - that being said, when im sitting at my desk doing work, having outlook is great.
I have an Android phone - and had the original Asus Transformer - I felt that it was kind of bulky with the keyboard attachment, and when detached, it was literally the same as my phone, albeit with a much larger screen. I was running the same apps, and the same games on my phone as my tablet, so it didn't really feel like a necessary device to me. I felt more comfortable holding my phone for gaming, and would occasionally use teamviewer, or Logmein to do work on my laptop remotely (which was much slower than RT's native RDP). I honestly felt that the apps ran better on the phone than on the tablet - there was considerable lag in everything I was doing, both on my phone and tablet, which drives me crazy. It was basically a pointless device for me.
The Surface RT on the other hand, feels like a real computer. I got it on launch, and was a bit disappointed at first, but the wave of updates made it more stable, and it has been great. Since ive gotten it, I sold my transformer, and even my wife who typically used my Ipad2 for web browsing prefers the RT. I am not App crazy person, I really only use the basics, and the full web browser sold me on RT. When i read people bash the thing because it has no legacy support for windows applications i just lmao.......you never hear someone say, why doesn't my ipad run photoshop - point is, there are a lot of idiots out there. The only app i use on my phone / ipad (besides the occasional game) that is not available on the Surface is Flipboard, and that is coming out shortly.

Well I did take the plunge and purchased one! I have to say I love it... I am still running 8 but did just a few tweak's, like disabling defender.
I agree with the transformers lag. I had the TF300 and it was terrible, especially at web surfing, or downloading multiple apps.. the I/O was awful...
I would usually download the "News" apps because it was better than the website/or mobile site.. but with the RT I just go to the website...
I agree with you 100% with everything you mentioned. I have talked to a few people that "complain" that it doesn't x86 apps... but that's not the point of it... I have laptops and computers and all that...I don't want another one... I really like the 8 interface on a tablet... I would be ok with no Desktop at all... I loved my google nexus and its beautiful screen...but I really like the RT. "I really only use the basics, and the full web browser sold me on RT. " -- Couldn't agree with you More .. no changing to desktop mode, or flash issues.... I have noticed that this site on the RT is a little slow...not sure cause of all the data on one page and ads and the such...
I ran 8.1 for a little bit, it was nice, but I will wait for it to be a little more refined...or final release...
The Pro is a great machine, I just can't justify the price.... love the speed..... They are smoking fast. At work we purchased a thinkpad helix... This thing is a monster. HD Screen, I7, 8GB memory, 250 SSD.....but heavy, I didn't really enjoy it as a tablet, it got very warm, battery life sucked, and you could hear the fans running....
With the rap Microsoft gets about windows 8 and all the hate, they put out a mobile tablet device that runs "APPS, and Office Productivity) and then get beat up over it... I don't understand...
The only thing I wish I could get is: 1. A Cheap touch cover... 20-30 bucks( Wishful Thinking - I know...) ..or just a smart cover like they make for the ipad but locks into place like the touch cover.
Anyways thanks again for your feed back!

I have no problem using tablet with windows 8 RT, and the MS office for home and students are good enough for me to use. I have 4 windows 8 RT tablets for my family. One of my family members uses one of these tablets at graduate school. Three of our family members use Android phones but two android tablets at home are put aside now. It is great to hear that MS starts cutting down the price of Surface RT. The price of windows 8 RT tablet is within the upper range of the price of a netbook ($275 to $375 with keyboard dock) is reasonable enough to purchase.

Yes i did get "a2w measy" but i wasn't happy with the quality of the picture and lags so i have send it back for a refund.
Picture looked like it was "bad quality movie" even thou it was 1080p. It is brilliant idea but need some more work on it.
I've used it on official MK9 4.3 rom to LG smart tv, picture quality was very good but it had around a 1 second lag which made it awful to use.
Actually after a LOT of reading and browsing.... I realized, that miracast is not working as it was the idea on the paper! It is just not ready for prime time...pretty similiar to Bluetooth in the beginings.
A lot of devices are not compatible with a lot of dongles. There is a lot of chinese cheap 20-30usd devices on the market, that according to sellers should support miracast, but that is more often then not not the case at all. And when someone succeeds to connect the dongle with the phone, it does not work very good at all for video casting...audio is often out of sync and video stutters and is choppy...and that is when it works at all.
So my advice to everybody is to get a TV stick/box with Android, for 50$....it will be much easy to setup for casting..and a lot more powerfull, espacially because it could do a lot of extra stuff...
regards,d

Yes I was thinking of buying it too but for me it would be so much easier to use my phone to navigate to where I want with miracast. I have tried to connect my phone to tv and use my tablet to navigate with all sorts of "remotes" from play store and it just wasn't comfortable enough to buy an android dongle.I guess i just need to wait until they will perfect miracast technology I don't mind small lags but picture quality with the compression it use is not good enough on 55 inch tv

[Q] Does Root + Debloat Resolve Performance Issues?

I just got my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 from Amazon and I'm already having issues with it
I play Simpsons Tapped Out and this game ran without any lag on my 2012 Nexus 7. However, when I load up the game on the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, I am having major lag while trying to pan around the town and even while trying to tap the buildings to collect money. I imagine Tapped Out is an incredibly casual and lightweight game(resource wise), so it makes me worried about how 'real' games will perform on the device.
My question is, if I root and debloat the tablet, will this improve performance on the tablet? Or is this the kind of performance that I can expect from the Exynos tablets?
I found this thread, and I was going to follow those instructions to debloat it with titanium backup(I assume I can use that to debloat it). Has anyone tried this and noticed an increase in performance?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help
As a follow up. I just went through and rooted the tablet, froze all that bloat and it's still performing like garbage in Simpsons Tapped Out. How is this possible that the Exynos chip isn't as good as a 2 year old tablet? Is it the QHD display? Is it TouchWiz that's causing it?
Out of all the reviews I looked at, none talked about this type of lag. This Simpsons game can't be that graphic intensive. Why is it stuttering so badly when I pan around the town?

May just be that that game is confused by the Exynos 8 core cpu. The device clearly has the power to run a simple game like that. In short, I think it may be the game and not the tablet.
One other idea. Try running Nova Launcher. But other users have had the same issue as you with that particular game.

That is really sad to hear. I can't get Family Guy working properly on the tablet and now this Besides watching content when I'm in bed, this is all I use the tablet for. It's making it really hard to format my 2012 Nexus 7 so I can give it to my father.
I'm curious if it's the CPU or the GPU that the game is having an issue with. I have had my eye on this forum lately and am getting excited that the CyanogenMod ROM might be the solution to my issue with these casual games. Positive thoughts :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for your input. I will say that it handles my 1080p content from my Drobo with BS Player flawlessly. So at least there's something

I've loaded up a few games under my current cm ROM and they have all played flawlessly. Though I haven't tried the games you mentioned, and I'm married a month away from having a baby so I'm a bit too broke to buy something I'm not going to play.
Tonight there should be a ROM with sound working if you want to give it a go.

Both Simpsons Tapped Out and Family Guy Quest for Stuff are free to play games.
I have been keeping an eye on your CyanogenMod thread. I have never used it for more than a day on my Nexus 5 before, but I'm excited to try it out on my Tab S 8.4
Clash of clans works great! Try it. It's crazy addicting
I installed Simpsons on my S 8.4, it seems to be running smooth for me. But I only started the game and my city is pretty basic at the moment, maybe performance issues start with a larger city ?

I wouldn't say I have a huge city, I'm only level 17. Nothing like my level 40 city in Family Guy. But I have a dozen or so characters unlocked in Simpsons. I can log out of my account and play as a guest I think to test on a starter city.
well, it wont' connect to the server now :/ but I will test it when I can
There have been reports of issues with this game on the other galaxy tablet forums as well. Since this tablet is fully capable of running even more complex games I would focus on the software as the issue. I'm not sure if these issues have been relayed to the developer but that would a great start to a resolution.

Back to the initial topic: Debloating can eliminate some of the background services that consume processing power. But it would surprise me if this would result in any relevant speedup (on an Octacore).
Other than that, probably the color adaption+enhancement thing does cost some performance (and battery).
And Mali T628 drivers might not be optimized.

Just to let you know it's not your tab. Tapped out doesn't work properly with exynos. It's the same note 10.1 2014 ed and tab so. It's a software issue

thanks for all the help everyone :good:
Just FYI... The Simpsons Tapped Out also performed horribly on my Nexus 10. I think it is the app. It was never optimized for some reason

It plays perfectly fine on my 2012 Nexus 7. There has been a swarm of lag complaints about it on blogs dedicated to the game. So maybe it's on their end
We now have some excellent rom's in development which should improve your experience.
I just tried the Simpson and couldn't try to replicate the lag problem. Mind runs very smooth.

thanks for testing
i loaded a new game and it ran ok until I got about 3 or 4 people on the screen. i see different lag spots. one happens when it first loads people's animations. so even if i scroll away, when i come back it seems to load those animations again. another lag spot i see is when i try to tap on a building to activate the money or finish the person's task. when the money bounces out of the building, i see lag spikes here. they don't go completely away after i collect the money, but shortly after
the family guy from the amazon store plays fine and doesn't have this lag. i also read on some dedicated simpsons tapped out blogs that EA is aware of a lag issue. however, im not entirely sure if i am getting the same lag they are confirming. we will see though.
