[Q] Can't Boot - Tough Question - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there. So I'm new to XDA but not so much to flashing and what not. I often, however, do dumb tests that fail and brick my phone, but I always get it back. This one is a little tougher. Here are the details:
-HTC One (M8) T-Mobile
-Phone was unlocked and rooted (still unlocked, not sure about rooted), but S-On.
-Tried flashing a kernel with S-On. Turned out to be packaged in a recovery. Didn't go so well. Turning the device on always went straight to Fastboot mode.
-Eventually got Philz recovery installed. Tried sideloading a nandroid backup. No avail. Still booting straight to fastboot.
Any ideas? Not a genius, but I know my way around. Is there any 100% complete refresh coming straight from Fastboot?

What exactly did you try to flash?

The new OTA update first. When that didn't work, I tried flashing the stock kernel back.

Go here, read, try it.

I haven't read the thread in that link, but in my experience when it boots straight to recovery it means the boot image is corrupt or missing. Not sure if you can do this with s-on, but to get back to normal I flashed twrp then downloaded and flashed a stock nandroid backup, then flashed an OTA via TWRP. After that everything was back to normal.

Unable to install CWM Recovery!

I am rooted with stock Android 4.0.3. I have ROM Manager and attempted to apply a new font, Chococooky. I was able to download and the installation process began, the phone powered off for 1-2 secs and turned on into an image with a sync sign and a loading bar, it stopped about 80% of the way full and then a new image appeared with a phone and an exclamation point: ! Root Checker was used to ensure proper root. I am properly rooted. Permissions were granted as well.
What's going on here?
Bump. I really need guidance here.

Clockwork is about dead now isn't it? Follow the above advice, and if you can't do commands use the toolkit, just not the latest version I believe it has ADB derp's. Put the TWRP image in the recovery folder of the toolkit, then flash away!:good:

Clockworkmod failure
HTC One V Primo C
Rooted this phone awhile ago, no problems.
Decided I wanted to flash Clockwork Mod to my phone.
I'm running Icecream Sandwhich.
Went through steps.
Got all excited.
Went to Reboot Recovery.
HTC splashscreen stays frozen.
From what i've read this is called a bootloop.
I want to know how to fix this problem.
Do I need to restore to factory settings and start over?
I'm at a loss. I've tried to re-do the steps a gillion times.
Went i'm in bootloader mode, it says .img cannot be read.
I've worked on it most of last night and most of today.
Still cannot obtain problem.
Deeply frustrated. Please help!

Can't flash a recovery ROM to HTC One Verizon

I might be doing something wrong but I can't flash any recovery ROMs to my HTC One. I used rumrunner S-off today and gained root access with my stock ROM. I tried using command prompt to flash a TWRP recovery ROM, and it only worked once but now whenever I try to do it it says either "cannot load image" or gives me a partition error.
I tried going into recovery with the one I flashed and when it says entering recovery mode it either goes into a continuous reboot cycle or proceeds to the lockscreen. I tried using flashify today too and it says my device isn't compatible with any of the recovery ROMs.
Please help, I'm so frustrated and all I want to do is flash Android Revolution to my HTC! Also, was I supposed to factory reset my phone before all this? Because I still have all my apps, photos, data, etc.
P.S. I'm a noob at this stuff so I might be doing something wrong.
Try Flashify from the play store. Put the recovery on the Flashify app and flash if.

s-off was successful?
bootloader locked/unlocked?
what are you typing into the cmd prompt?
result from that cmd?
where did you get the recovery from? are you sure it's for the vzw htc one?

S-off was successful.
Bootloader is unlocked (And somehow the phone became rooted in the process)
cmd prompt: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
cmd prompt kept saying something about unable to load the image
Got the recovery from ClockWork Mod - It is Verizon HTC One version
Thank you guys for your concern but I figured it all out. I used an all-in-one toolkit and it flashed my recovery without a problem. Now I have a Nandroid backup for stock rooted ROM, and flashed BoneStock onto my device! It is all working great and my battery life rocks!

OK first off make sure the recovery you are trying to flash ends in m7vzw.img second, Flashify doesn't work for everyone so you might have to do it from adb on your computer. And finally, there is no android revolution rom for the Verizon htc one.
The developer of Flashify has a thread in Android developing and hacking/ apps and games / Flashify. Sometimes these threads have updates posted before the play store does. Start at the back of the thread and read toward the beginning, find the latest info faster (about a 25 page thread).

You should try to do these things without using all-in-one kits. It's best to know what was done in case something goes wrong in the future. My guess is you were most likely trying to flash the wrong recovery.
Well, at least you're up and running!

Thank you for the tip, I will remember that the next time I flash a recovery to something. It was the correct recovery, but for some reason the fastboot and adb wouldn't flash it. Maybe I just needed a reboot of pc or something...
Had the same issue after s-off with twrp. Ended up flashing cwm touch instead and it works just as well. Although I do miss twrp.

Just bought a rooted HTC One and have a few questions

What's up everyone. I had a stock One but needed to get my crackflash on so I bought a rooted One online.
So here are my questions 1) how can I tell what recovery is installed 2) how can i tell if the bootloader is unlocked?
And before you ask, I bought it third party so I wasn't able to get the info from the seller.
Thanks
Boot to hboot to see if the bootloader is unlocked. With the phone off hold vol down and power at the same time, untill a white screen appears (hboot). It will say at the top either locked, unlocked, or relocked. Then from hboot scroll down to recovery and select it with the power button. Once in recovery it wil say at the top which one it is and what version.
Thanks so much! Any suggestion on which recovery to use? I've read pros and con's of each. I'll prolly flash Vipers ROM.

I prefer TWRP. It has a nicer ui, and it backs up and restores a good 3 to 4 times faster than cwm.
That's what I'm used to. Can I just flash it in recovery or would I need to adb it over? I think the last time I had a rooted phone I flashed twrp via ROM manager

Best way to flash TWRP is via fastboot. Follow instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416431
You could also use Root Recovery Tools - Flasher from the market as well. If you have a usb-otg adapter you can also flash it thru hboot as a PN07IMG.zip. And you can also flash it thru fastboot RUU mode.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but I had a quick question- what's the difference between doing an RUU and just flashing the stock OTA rom?
An ota updates not only the rom, but also all the other system images (bootloader, radio, recovery, and many other behind the scenes partitions.) Also obviously the ruu will not be pre rooted like the rom.
Got the phone today and the bootloader is unlocked. It has Clockwork installed. Its not the latest, any real reason to upgrade it?
Not really unless its realy old, which i doubt.

I would just recommend switching to TWRP though, CWM seems to give people issues sometimes
Sometimes current ROMs can have issues in flashing on older recoveries. I have had zero issues with twrp. While with cwm on my bolt all my backups got corrupted. I have tried cwm just to see how it is coming but like said it takes forever to do a backup. I just wish we could get the 4ext recovery. That was one recovery that in my eyes blew even twrp away. Twrp will never let you down.

I just did a backup with the CWM that was installed, it was only one version behind, and the backup is only 38mb?? I know that backups are usually 1 gb or so. I'm guessing I'll be flashing TWRP later on today.
That's definitely not a full backup lol.

[Q] Need help, "Can't mount sdcard"

Hi all, I'm a really novice rooter with the HTC One M7 for Verizon.
I know I'm S-Off with HBOOT 1.56,
and all of a sudden my phone just automatically boots into CWM Recovery.
I've tried loading old recoveries, old zip files, and the response is always
"Can't mount sdcard."
Again, although I'm rooted, I'm pretty much a novice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hoping I didnt' lose this phone.

Bricking your phone is near impossible nowadays. I wouldn't fret too much.
Are you sure that you're flashing ROMs and recoveries meant for the m7vzw (HTC One for Verizon) and not just the regular m7 (normal HTC One)?
If you're sure that you're flashing for m7zw, have you tried flashing a new recovery through fastboot? i.e.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery newrecoveryname.img
I would ruu. Then set up your favorite recovery and Rom. Start fresh. It will wipe everything so back up your files.

I'm running CWM recovery, which says that I can't mount the SD Card.
I then tried what you suggested, installed twrp recovery, and now I'm stuck in a reboot loop with the htc screen.
I'm not sure what to do now.

Help getting stock recovery back

I am having problems with a HTC 10 running stock Oreo. After unlocking the bootloader, installing TWRP and creating a backup I attempted and failed to install LOS 14.1 so restored my backup.
Everything seems to be fine however I cannot seem to flash a stock recovery zip successfully, I tried it once with a file I believed to be correct and it removed TWRP and now going into recovery mode just bootloops on a black screen with small HTC logo until I press Power+Volume Down. This obviously means I can no longer do a factory reset from within Android.
This is my first HTC so am unsure of how to continue or what file(s) I actually need.
My cid is htc__001, I have S-ON and running 3.16.401.2 I think.
