I just received a refurbished S3, with KitKat already installed. I also used CF-Autoroot through Odin. Odin said everything passed. No su was installed, can't boot into any recovery, and rootchecker claims I am not rooted. If I install SU from play store, it says something about binaries needing updated, and that it can't do it. I even flashed it again, and it passed, but got all the same results. What am I missing?

Have you tried booting into recovery using the home+vol up+pwr button combo? If you can get into recovery, you can flash the supersu.zip package from recovery. I can try and get a link for the supersu.zip for you when I have a chance.

Odin the latest Philz recovery in tar version, then boot into recovery and when you tell recovery to reboot your phone, it'll offer to root your phone for you without manually downloading SuperSU.zip.

I just remembered something that you might try. As Rode Warrior mentioned, flash the latest Philz recovery via ODIN.
However, in ODIN, uncheck the "Auto Reboot" box and remove the battery cover (keep reading, you'll see why). Now, in ODIN flash the recovery, but when it says PASS, your phone will not reboot.
At this point, remove the USB chord and unplug the battery. Now, hold the Power + Vol Up + Home Button all together and re-insert the battery.
You should now boot into recovery. I can't remember the exact technicalities behind it, but Samsung built into their recovery a feature that will override the recovery you flashed in ODIN with the stock recovery.
Try the method I just gave you and let me know if it works.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I will not be able to try it again until about 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, but I will be sure to post results. Thanks again for the quick reply

Just a quick heads up, many of the ROMs for our device have moved to unified builds for the USA LTE SGS3. Thus you may need to look for the latest ROM being built for model # d2lte.

I have dirty flashed many times, but not from odexed to deodexed, or vice versa. Thanks in advance

Doing a quick Google search, flashing via ODIN wipes /system. Your media, apps, and titanium and nandroid backups should remain in tact.
The only time dirty flashes are advisable is if it's the same ROM and a small incremental (e.g. nightly/same Android version) build. That said, I also read that Deodexed over Odexed will be fine as long as you're doing stock Touchwiz overr stock Touchwiz (again same build number 4.3 --> 4.3 / 4.4.x --> 4.4.x). You'll just want to wipe /system, cache, and dalvik cache before ODINing the Deodexed to clear out all the odexed info from the system.
On a side note, always, always, always make a backup of your last working environment in the event that something fails.
If you start getting bootloops or unexpected behavior, you may want to restore your backup and consider doing a full wipe and flash to the ROM of your choosing.
Hope this helps.
I just want to clarify that ODINing a stock tar will only not wipe out your nandroids and Titanium Backups if your store them on your external SD. Internal SD gets completely wiped.

Check your build prop for device name. Maybe its not correct because of the Rom you're on. Whats the error you're getting?
Did you ever get TWRP on your phone?
I've had goofy issues with TWRP but much prefer it to CWM. Originally rooted using CWM and SuperSu and switched to TWRP when I flashed CleanRom several times via Romtoolbox pro I've flashed updated Twrp it said it was successful but when it rebooted was soft bricked! Had to use Odin and original CWM to get back in and re-install everything (nandroids were twrp backups) found file downloaded to sdcard that worked fine! Odd...

If by "installed" you are referring to the recovery program itself (and not your backups), you can only have one recovery 'installed' at one time as there is only 1 "Recovery" partition on the device (/dev/block/mmcblk0p9). So if you want to install CWM instead of your current TWRP (or visa-versa), either flash the appropriate new recovery zip via your current recovery... or Odin3 flash your desired new recovery tar. Either way, it will write to the same recovery partition. If you are referring to your backups... these are stored in the designated path you selected (either internal sd or external sd)... in the TWRP/BACKUPS folder. In that folder, you will have a device id #... in that folder are your backups.
Gotcha! Thanks the way it acted I wondered if there were "leftovers" in recovery partition or corrupt data. When I reflashed CWM or TWRP via ODIN it didn't say "Passed" instead "RESET" and I had to unplug phone and manually boot recovery which sometimes took a couple tries... Only boxes checked in Odin are reset time and reboot.

Stock Samsung recovery pulled straight from stock firmware and packaged as a Odin flashable tar file. I decided to do this for those who may want or need to flash the stock recovery. I have tested this and worked fine on my phone. I am not sure if it will work with any other carrier besides AT&T so if you try it do so at your own risk and if it works report it and I will add any other confirmed carriers that it works for. I am not responsible if you brick, melt or blow up your phone so don't cry to me lol...

Odin mode or download mode is for flashing a new firmware. I mainly posted this stock recovery for the ones using a custom recovery like cwm or twrp and just wanted to flash the stock recovery back so they could update their phones via a OTA update. If you are running a recovery like cwm or twrp and your phone tells you that you have a ota firmware update available it will not let you install it with a custom recovery. To update via a OTA update you must have the stock Samsung recovery. So now anyone using cwm or twrp can just flash this stock recovery download everoot from the play store for free then run ever root update their phone run ever root again and never even lose root privaledge on their phone....

Has anyone tried it on a canadian i747m yet ?
I'm not willing to be the first one to try it out as I can't afford to brick it due to software incompatibility. :/
Thanks for posting this Gary! And good to see ya here, we gotta get the remaining skyrocket crew to join the dark side lol
Does anyone know if stock recovery is required to perform official OTA updates with the S3 on AT&T? I remember needing stock recovery for updates to the S2 Skyrocket, but I'm not sure if anything's changed with the S3 (and I did see a Rogers user say he was able to get the jb OTA while using TWRP for recovery, so maybe it isn't necessary?).
EDIT: Also wanted to mention, in case anyone is wondering, this .tar does work with Mobile Odin Pro. Just used it successfully.
From what I've heard yes you do need the stock recovery to ota update on the s3. Again I hadn't tried it but that's what I hear anyway.
Oh and its good to be here. I still have my rocket. Its used for highly experimental testing and flashing lol.. I've soft bricked it three times since I've had my s3 in less than a month lol. I just hope my next experiment whatever that may be isn't my last lol...

As far as I know the stock 3e recovery has not changed, it's the same for any build number for the S3. The stock recovery is on a partition separate from the rom so it shouldn't matter which build you're on.
(99% sure on this but someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Hi,
I'm having issues installing CWM Recovery on my Rooted GN2. It's the Canadian variant, SGH-I317M.
It does go through the process of flashing the recovery, but never gets to saying PASS in ODIN. When I try to get into the Recovery, it still has the stock Samsung Recovery. It does, however trip the flash counter.
I'm followiing the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988785

I thought of cleanROM but it is pretty stock. I feel if im going to flash any rom i might as well go with something modded and tweaked rather then stock, while keeping most of the note 2 and s-pen features. If i start finding them being a little buggy or draining my battery or anything, ill settle with cleanROM and just flash some custom mods.
i flashed my CWM through MobileODIN. worked like a charm. then i ran into issues with backing up to extSD, which ended up working after i formatted it but i took way longer then onto internal SD.
i know its off topic for this thread..Any suggestions or thoughts on the JEDI X9 and SKYNOTE roms will be great guys. Im all backed up and ready to flash pretty quick here.
I guess you have custom ROM. You must root and rename recovery restore files before you boot to android or stock recovery will be restored.
Hi everyone,
I just got the Samsung Galaxy S3 and I was able to root and flash a custom ROM. I'm currently on Axis ROM: (4.1.2 customized Touchwiz) Link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089801
The kernel I had right now is stock and I'm not every satisfied with the battery life. Therefore, I try to flash a different one but keep getting error in recovery. I tried TWRP recovery, it shows the red error Fail. I also tried Clockmod touch, get the same error saying unable to extract/flash the zip.
Yes, I did wipe cache several times before flashing. Additionally, I had download different kernel zip (more than 10 of them) in case it's a bad download. Nothing works. I do have a decent experience flashing ROM and stuff with Android devices and this is the strangest thing I ever ran into.
I'm on T-mobile Galaxy s3 by the way. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you!
Make sure you're flashing a compatible kernel. There are touchwiz and aosp kernels, the title for the rom should say what kind of base it has.
Edit: looks like it's a touchwiz rom so make sure you flash a kernel that's compatible with touchwiz. What kernel are you trying to flash?
Oh and also make sure the download is correct.

What versions of twrp and cwm did you use?
When you booted into recovery did it look the same each time? I ask because you got some red error fail on both???
Open a root capable browser and go to /system
Look for install-recovery.sh
If its there, delete it and reinstall twrp/cwm.

Oh and also make sure the download is correct.

Yes, they are compatible. Kinetic Pulse, Darkside, KT kernel, all three of them fail.

What versions of twrp and cwm did you use?
When you booted into recovery did it look the same each time? I ask because you got some red error fail on both???
Open a root capable browser and go to /system
Look for install-recovery.sh
If its there, delete it and reinstall twrp/cwm.

I didn't find such file in /system. The recovery looks different. I do know how they look like since I used both of them before. TWRP shows error in Red (Fail). cwm doesn't, but show error that unable to extract zip.
CWM Touch 6.0.2.3
TWRP 2.4.2.0
Yes, all these recovery and kernel are T-mobile. I tried full wipe/no wipe but nothing helps.
P.s: thank you for replying though.
Do you have busybox installed?

I just got a replacement phone this morning and it came with the KK update already installed. I found this link in another thread, http://www.nasirtech.blogspot.in/2014/05/root-l710vpudnd8-android-442-stock.html
I tried this a couple of times and each time it says it worked but SU will not work at all. I also tried to flash (through ODIN) Philz Rec and it will not flash. I do not get any errors, it is just not working as expected. I also tried a different version of ODIN and still nothing.
What is the best way to get root on this bad boy? Funny in Download mode it shows that binary and system status is "custom" and warranty bit is "1" which indicates I should have a custom recovery but I don't.
Not enough info to say what problems u may be having, but this is the link that I used to flash custom recovery and root...

Not sure what further info is needed? That link you provide is not for me. I already have that installed. I suppose I could use that method but was hoping to not have to reset the phone as I already set it up.

Your binary status and custom versus official has little correlation with whether you actually have a functioning, rooted device.
You currently do not have root; and, you indicate that you have installed custom recovery? If so, have you tried flashing the latest SU from recovery?

Sorry, from reading your post, I thought u were trying to flash md8 and root and that you were unsuccessful in getting a custom recovery on the phone

You should update supersu from market and open it and convert it to system app then restart.

Or just flash the very latest SuperSU.zip (v1.97 from what I read) then it won't be updated or moved.
