[Serious Bugs] Android 4.4.2 Galaxy Note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, folks
Recently I upgraded to Android Kitkat 4.4.2 (Indian Version) on my Samsung Galaxy Note II, I have come across a serious BUG after upgrading to Android 4.4.2.
BUG Details: Memory card cannot be read internally
For Instance while connected to Winscp via SSHDroid new folder cannot be created in Memory Card but at the same time new folder can be created in Phone Memory
I guess writing has been restricted
It's not over..... While downloading videos via YouTube Downloader 4.2 (Dentex) when custom folder chosen to memory card downloading gets failed
Again I guess writing has been restricted
I tried 3-4 different memory cards guessing problem might be in memory card (formatted as well)
Flashed my Note II via Hard Reset
Tried all ways and I have come to conclusion the BUG is in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat (Indian Version)
Kindly share if you have encountered same BUG as well (Specially Indian Consumers)
Regards,
Note II

It's not a bug, it is included in the Kitkat update for security purposes.
There is a fix for that but you have to be rooted.

Bro What kind of security is it? I cannot copy my own files into my memory card
iQuran cannot read my memory card in which has supporting files
I cannot save/download videos from YouTube Downloader to my memory card

What rom are you using?
You can simply transfer your files using a comupter...
Then paste it to your memory card..
That's what I did when I'm on Stock Kitkat ROM...
If you want to apply the SD Card fixed root your phone first.

Take a look at my signature

They did what. You can't copy from internal to external memory. Omg i see no 4.4 on my device.
Edit : ok i understand now.

you can copy or move anything with stock file manager My Files..only third party application has no permission to write.

xplore file manager can handle files in sd card too...

Google chose to block write access, for third party apps (those not pre-installed), to external storage; except in their own directories.
There is currently a loophole which some developers have updated their apps to use, but with future iterations of android this will likely be blocked.
This change has been primarily to keep the sdcard clean; un-installing third party apps had left orphaned files the sdcard and resulted in a poor user experience. Personally I'm not sure how viable an explanation this is when you weigh it up against the affect to the user experience of preventing 3rd.P apps from accessing anything outside of their own granted space, or the space granted to a partner app. I think this is either google being evil, trying to lower the value of an sdcard slot to drive OEMs to make devices without one (for various profitable purposes) OR because google goofed on their first time really deciding what access they should have (previously there was no formal access rights definition, it was a free-for-all.)
Hold this space

You can install my apks from play store to back up apk in external card and quick office for editing and saving dox in external card without rooting from play store..enjoy

you are right,writing of sdcard has been restricted in android 4.4.2

The easiest solution is getting root access and using the sdfix app; reverting is overkill if you just want 3p rw access back.

Happened to me yesterday. I was goin to format my fone, so i took a backup of some apps on helium(Since im not rooted)on my sd card. I formatted my fone. After that wen i went in carbon folder, it was empty. No data.

Titanium backup pro. Total failblog.

I bought the pro version of this software after hearing a lot about it. I live on the edge and support software developers.
Experience 1. Free version looks OK so I pay for the pro version. It tells me I don't have root. I clearly do. I'm running CM 10.2. I have root. I try several things it suggests, nothing works. Reboot and it works.
Experience 2. Try to actually back something up. It tells me I have insufficient free space. I have 9 gigs free on the internal card, have a brand new 32 gig SD card, and I'm trying to backup one small app. Searching the Internet shows dozens of the same complaint. I tried a few suggestions and none worked so far. I'm giving up for now.
Total failblog as far as I'm concerned. WTF? Am I just unlucky? People rave about this software?
For reasons unknown, you are having a bad experience. I have used titanium backup religiously across several different android devices dating all the way back to the original galaxy s 1 running eclair android version 2.1. And in my experiences, due to the complex nature of TB, its really more than just checking if the device has basic root access. If the device is not properly rooted or missing other required configurations, it will not work properly. And considering that you are running CM which isnt even stable yet on this device, its likely an issue with the ROM. If you run what I am running or stock, TB works just fine. Or you can troubleshoot the issue in the ROM thread you are running.

Are you rooted? If yes, did you grant it permissions for root access when prompted? Did you configure it to backup to your SD card?

I had done all of those things except configure the backup path to the SD card. But I had lots free on the device too so it made no sense.
But changing the path to the SD card fixed the error so I'm in business.
Thanks and sorry for the rant.
I am having a little trouble with titBU. I just installed a rooted kitkat rom stock and CivZ sphereKat- Rev4.2-n5110by civato kernel. Root is confirmed by rootchecker pro.
TitBU is working, but when I try to BU my apps it fails with the message -Batch BU interrupted. Insufficient free storage space.
The path is to my 64 gb external sd card with 40 gb free and the phone sd card has 1/2 the space remaining.
Anyone have an idea what the problem is? Thanks for any feedback.

And i quote
--------------------------------------
[ About MicroSD Cards in Android 4.4 / KitKat ]
When Google released Android 4.4, they specified that applications you download can no longer write to user-installed MicroSD cards. Apps can still write to internal flash storage. Some devices (like Google Nexus devices) only have internal storage, and are unaffected. Other devices (e.g. Samsung Galaxy and Note devices) have the ability to expand their storage space by installing a MicroSD card. When KitKat is installed on such devices, apps are limited to only being able to manipulate files on the built-in storage, with write-access to the MicroSD card being restricted.
This change represents a removal of functionality compared with Android 4.3. 4.3 allowed apps to write to the MicroSD card, as did prior versions.
The limitation introduced in KitKat does not affect the capabilities of preinstalled apps, only apps you choose to install. Apps preinstalled by Google, your device manufacturer, and your carrier still have this ability. Only apps that you choose to install are restricted.
[ Technical Details ]
NextApp SDFix will modify the configuration file located at /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml to allow apps to write to the MicroSD card. Specifically, SDFix will add the Android UNIX group "media_rw" to the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission's configuration. This will enable apps (only those that you granted write access permissions to when you installed them) to write files to the MicroSD card. On many devices, this is effectively reverting the state of this permission back to the way it was configured in Android 4.3. This modification is carried out by modifying the existing XML file, rather than replacing it.
A backup of the original configuration file will be saved at /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml.original-pre-sdfix (provided one does not already exist). Reverting this modification can be accomplished by using a root -enabled file manager to replace the /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file with the backed up version.

[Q] SD Card Fix Issue With P600

Hi,
I hope someone has suggestions on the following issue. I've searched threads, but haven't found this specifically.
I need the ability to R/W with multiple programs to my SD card. Due to work and also teaching concerns, I need to access directories of ebooks, articles and databases that are large and in the past were synced from the cloud to my device. Obviously KitKat makes an issue of this.
I recently obtained a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 P600. Refurbished by the manufacturer. This has only a one-month warranty so rooting wasn't a concern.
1. I rooted the device using CF Autoroot. Rooting was confirmed by Root Checker.
2. I ran SDFix. No joy. Access to the SD card was sporadic - for example - music on the card would only play 2 seconds of each song.
3. Using Titanium Backup, I froze all Knox-related programs (this was more than the list of 6 I think. I can provide a list later.) Later, I also backed-up and deleted the programs.
Access to the SD card was still sporadic. After a reboot, I might have access for a few minutes, and then restricted access again.
4. I then tried Xposed Framework and the "Handle External Storage" module (see the 3rd method in this article http://technofaq.org/posts/2014/04/fixing-external-sd-card-write-issue-on-android-kitkat/). This worked but still had issues - I had drive access but from time to time it would disappear - it would seem to randomly unmount.
5. But, I decide to keep trying and in the process went to create a folder with File Explorer. FX gave me a message about KitKat - and asked if I wanted to configure it to try to write to the SD card under KitKat. I said yes - and suddenly I cannot access the drive at all.
Android Version 4.4.2
Kernel Version 3.4.39-1462259
Build Number: KOT49H.P600UECNK1
SE for Android Status Enforcing SEPF_SM-P600_4.4.2_0032
The SD card is a Sandisk 128GB.
I haven't tried flashing another ROM because I also need S-Pen and Chromecast functionality - so I just didn't want to fool with it.
1. Does anyone have any suggestions to get SD card RW access?
2. If "No" to the above, what is a good stock ROM with S-Pen and Chromecast functionality that has already addressed the SD issue that I can flash (and where is it located)?
Thank you all for your help.
Have you tried manually editing /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml?
Find this section:
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
</permission>
And change it to this:
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
[B][COLOR=Blue]<group gid="media_rw" />[/COLOR][/B]
</permission>
Check permissions on platform.xml after editing and fix if needed. Reboot.

Yes - I checked SDFix after running it, and platform.xml had already been correctly edited. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Have you tested this SD card in other devices, and other SD cards in this device?

Take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741914. It looks like 128Gb SD card only works with 4.3
Edit: Try this ROM it should have RW to SD card. Along with S-Pen and Chromecast ability because it is stock based.

Thank you for the prior comments. Due to work and the holidays I wasn't able to reply prior to now.
It turns out the issue was my attempt at using a 128GB card- the Samsung Note 10.1 2014 can apparently only handle up to a 64GB card.
Out of curiosity, has anyone found a way to root and reset KNOX to 0?

128GB cards do not work with 4.3. I have 4.3 and have tested four different Sandisk 128gb cards in fat32 and Exfat and no luck. Only 64gb works with 4.3 and this was confirmed with Best Buy demo units as well (pre 4.4 update of the demos course).

from what I know and read once knox is tripped you cant reset it. I think you can root without tripping it but just cant reset it.
It's a one-way trip!

Right! The problem is that "tripping" knox actually changes the hardware. It burns out a fusible link which, of course, can't be un-burnt.

Vodafone smart tab 4G

Hello,
is possible manually update my tablet to Android 5? I found this
but from ( ROM Part 1 : http://goo.gl/7pyL97 ) this site i cant download ROM
Upgrade/Update Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to 5.0 Lollipop
Upgrade/Update Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to 5.0 Lollipop
I rewrite this tutorial from forum.xda-developers.com :
The users of Vodafone Smart Tab 4g can now update their handsets to Android 5.0 Lollipop using custom ROM. The new Android 5.0 Lollipop comes with many new features :
- Up to 4x performance improvements.
- A battery saver feature which extends device use by up to 90 mins.
- It has a faster, smoother and more powerful computing experience.
- Support for 64-bit SoCs using ARM, x86, and MIPS-based cores.
- OpenGL ES 3.1 and Android extension pack brings Android to the forefront of mobile graphics putting it on par with desktop and console class performance.
- Responsive, natural motion, realistic lighting and shadows, and familiar visual elements make it easier to navigate your device.
- More intelligent ranking of notifications based on who they’re from and the type of communication. See all your notifications in one place by tapping the top of the screen.
- New devices come with encryption automatically turned on to help protect data on lost or stolen devices.
- SELinux enforcing for all applications means even better protection against vulnerabilities and malware.
- State of the art video technology with support for HEVC main profile to allow for UHD 4K 10-bit video playback, tunneled hardware video decoding to save power and improved HLS support for streaming.
- and other cool features.
Here are some more aspects that users should know before trying out the custom ROM :
- Users need to have proper back-up for their personal data on the device.
- The handset should have at least 80 percent of battery power.
- The users also need to ensure that USB Debugging is enabled on the device.
- During the installation, if the device gets stuck on booting, users can perform wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik before rebooting the device.
Tutorial
1. Download Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM for Vodafone Smart Tab 4g from link below :
The ROM File size is big, so I split the file into 3 parts :
ROM Part 1 : http://goo.gl/7pyL97
ROM Part 2 : http://goo.gl/ffHU2x
ROM Part 3 : http://goo.gl/l1zKh5
To combine 3 parts files above into 1 file just use WINRAR, then extract the files into ZIP format. If any problem with the ROM, maybe because the ROM have corrupted during the download process, you can try to re-download the ROM.
2. Install the ROM Manager on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . Get it from Google Play Store, then install the clockwork mod recovery. You also can use ROM Installer application from JRummy Apps Inc.(Get it from Google Play Store).
3. Connect your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to your PC employing the USB information cable. Copy the “ROM.zip” file you downloaded to the SD memory card.
4. Restart your device in the recovery mode using ROM Manager. As soon as in Recovery Mode, go to ROM Manager and select backup/restore to back-up your information.
5. From the Recovery Menu do a total data erase (including Delvik Cache). When completed, go back to Recovery Principal Menu and choose Flash ROM from SD Card. Navigate the location you copied the ”ROM.zip” file and follow the directions for installing Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . As soon as the installation is over, just reboot your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g device, and here you go, you’ve just upgraded it to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Hi:
did you tried it? Have you got root on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4G? I found out a thread with the root file/method, but the file link is broken

I have same issue. Apps can work with data on SD Card, for example RawDroid can edit photos, save/delete files. But App2SD functionality is still not supported. It should work with Link2SD app and 2 partitions on SD card. The reason is emulated external storage in internal memory. I didn't find yet how to turn this of, or how to change it.

I've tried Link2SD, but with no success. The best i got was to use MountFolder to move the applications data to the external SD card. With this, I've recovered some good precious space (for example, Minion Rush was using 330MB that where freed).

Thanks for tip FolderMount (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount) works like a charm.
If anyone wants the source code, here it is:
Code:

It was awesome if we could get a rom for this tablet =)
People say it is based on Alcatel Pop 8S tablet, but I have never seen this tablet on sale, neither original roms, nothing about it.
Only alcatel website has some info about it, but not much: http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/products/tablets/pop_8s.html#.VOPaQfmsVoc
Anyone managed to remove system apps?
Titanium backup says it can't find the apks..
In Android 4.4, apps can't write the sd-card, it's a security thing. But there are apps, which enables sd write. And yes, we have source, but for ROMs we also need recovery, and a developer. But fingers crossed.

What u mean updating apps.? Updates all apps from store?
No, optimezing. Its that thing when android take an update and after that the apps is optimezed. This happening after each reboot. About the root process: if you use win 8, 8.1 you wont be able to rootbso easly because of the drivers. Try with win xp or 7. My advice: use XP. I did it with it.

So, to get this straight: we can actually root the Vodafone smart tab 4g and flash custom roms??

[Q] Lollipop - Titanium backup ext_sd error

Hope I'm not repeating a question here. I couldn't find anything in this forum. I just finished updating my international m8 to lollipop ota. After installing titanium backup from the market, I noticed my previous backup on ext_sd are reported as not writable by titanium. I was under the impression that the new android L would rectify this Kitkat issue. Is there any work around for this issue yet? Thanks.
So I found a test version of titanium backup for Lollipop http://bit.ly/1v0njNa. Unfortunately I'm getting Documents crashes when I selected the extsd after switching to documentprovider storage. So I'm still unable to assign the backup directory to my external sd. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello All,
Since kitkat 4.4.2 was released on the Galaxy Note 3, many users were unable to write files to the External SD Card. Below is a simple fix for rooted users on the Galaxy Note 3 N9005 ( International Snapdragon Variant).
**Please be advised that I have only tested this on my personal N9005. However, you are free to test it on your own devices at your own risk!! **
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...<group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.
Attached is a copy of my platform.xml.

Working ok.
Thanks for the reply. I did use that solution when I was on 4.4 but lollipop has a different documentprovider solution now. I finally figured out what was happening. The issue isn't with titanium backup up but with how documentprovider was accessing my ext_sd. For some reason the documents will crash if I left ext_sd unnamed. I ended resolving the issue by naming my sdcard and it's been working as expected. Weird little bug in lollipop... In addition to the DNS issue.
Thanks for that solution. I had the same issue.
After naming the SD card using my laptop, the HTC Documents application no longer crashed and I can allow write access to the application (ES fileexplorer in my case.).
I guess it is an HTC bug, the documentsprovider shows the label/name of the ext SD card on the button to be pressed to allow access, and apparently it can't handle an empty SD card name.
