[Q] Stuck in Edge (2G) on Rogers - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey all,
Bought a used Note II last week in a parking lot deal. Seller said WiFi is not working, which proved to be true, but that everything else is fine... not true. Phone seemed to work with my SIM, so we sealed the deal.
Since then, the phone never left Edge (2G), even in areas where I should be getting LTE. I've managed to update to rooted 4.3 via Odin (phone showed as "Modified" and therefore wouldn't OTA update from 4.1.1). I've also swapped SIMs and APNs with no move out of Edge.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...

Bump?

You are with a Canadian carrier? Some carriers will require you to flash a modem that matches your carrier.

[Rogers] Not allowed by SIM

My original thread has not been moved from the old forum, so I'm just going to link it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757711&highlight=not+allowed+by+sim
Anyway, someone on HoFo posted that if you change your APN to non-LTE, the problem goes away. I did that yesterday and so far I haven't seen the error. However, my coworker did the same thing on his S3 and still got the error. This issue is specific to Rogers network, as other people used their unlocked Rogers S3 on other carriers and did not see the error, but once they put in Rogers SIM back in, it was back. I wish Rogers would get off their ass and fix it!
This happens also on Telus. Not sure if I've done this APN trick, but I have HSPA locked and the modem locked on 850mHz through the service menu *#2263#, and I still get this error sometimes.
a quick flight mode toggle always fixes it.

Yeah, same here. It's just annoying when you're in a hurry and need to make an urgent phone call.
Not sure if this helps but I sell cell phones and a memo was released by rogers stating its a error in the firmware and that when rogers reception drops or its out of range it will say this, instead of showing no signal. Its states rogers and samsung are working on a fix for it. Its probably more noticeable on the rogers network than others because they are currently working on expanding there network in most of Canada therefore its probably causing signal drops every now and then.

still having this issue after OTA update
TELUS
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I purchased an unlocked S3 about 3 weeks ago and I just got this error today. I was not able to make any phone calls until I used the flight mode trick. I thought this problem had been fixed? I'm with fido so it's part of the Rogers family.
Does anyone else still experience this issue?
haven't had this error since the last time i posted which was September
although i find it more often that my phone would lose reception in places or situations where before i would have reception, but just SIM error.
so my guess is that the phone hasn't yet reconnected to the network after losing reception (from underground parking etc) and before it was "showing" reception when it had none and came back with SIM error. now it just flats out says what's going on, which is no reception.

flash gs3 from us cellular to sprint

So i bought this phone for cheap brand new in box from a foriegn national that purchesed it outright when they got here no contract ( they didnt like it and bought an iphone 5 days later and now i have it). hoping i could flash it over to sprint and upgrade from my e4gt so i can use the beautiful lte in the area.... yeah Rockford. but im currently struggling are there any tips that you guys have or am i screwed...
heres what ive tried. so as i got it i turned it on and it was on 4.0.4 with full signal and working 4g. i used the rooting method that is posted here for sprint gs3's as there isnt one specific for us cellular phones. flashed back to a us cellular kernel as it would boot but claimed no sim was inseterd and boom worked and had root.... then rebooted in recovery and tried to odin a sprint stock rom... failed throws errors. rebooted in to recovery cwm 6.0 and tried to flash some sprint and us cellular custom, stock, and stock modified roms fails checks every time and wont flash. i know 99% of the hardware is exactly the same so it shouldnt be impossible just looking to get this on sprint ... now i have odin the lastest stock update for us cellular just in case it really isnt worth it so i can sell it.... yes i have reset the flash counter and the device says normal device state not modified so that shouldnt be an issue.
on another note my imei number is only 14 digits... isnt it supposed to be 15. when i try and activate it. (assuming i CAN get it flashed to sprint) wont that be a problem. and btw it is the same digits on the box and ive even done the conversion from the meid-dec number and it gives me the same 14 numbers
I don't think USC uses the same LTE bands as sprint so even if you got it working it would be physically impossible for it to connect to the sprint 4G network. May be better off to look for someone to trade with you, or sell that one and buy a sprint version.
http://www.phonescoop.com/carriers/carrier.php?c=12 - according to this USC is on LTE 700/1700, while Sprint uses LTE on 1900.
Damn well it was a nice thought.... Any one want to trade.. Lol well thanks

Canadian i747m not working any network in Europe

Hello Everyone
I have Galaxy S3 i747m from Rogers. I went to Europe for holidays. I unlocked my phone in Poland. After that phone was working ok but internet was very slow. It was working on Edge although everywhere was LTE range. I was changing carriers-sim cards but was the same problem. Then I went to UK. There my phone stopped reading any network especially when I was in the building. My current carrier is O2. My phone sometimes says not registered on network or says nothing. I have no connection at all. I dont know what to do now.
I flashed a new rom from this forum Hyperdrive which is nice but it didnt change anything. I was also installing those two files ..modem_XXDME4__ and modem+ddemg2 but my phone stopped working at all. So I had to format and flash a rom again.
Please help me guys because I want to destroy this phone with an AXE. I give up.
Not sure what the situation is in Europe, but I had a similar problem when I bought an unlocked i747M and attempted to use it on my AT&T network in the US.
Phone calls were fine, but way slow data connectivity.
US LTE does not support International/Canadian phones. Something with the modem and bands used here vs Canada.
Might be the same situation where you are. The modem may not be compatible with the European network bands.
I know DocHoliday77 helped me with mine. He made it very clear you CAN NOT change the modem version. I have the US version now and all is fine.
That's the only thing I can think of too tbh. That or something is corrupt or there's some sort of hardware issue. Sorry, I know that doesn't help much.... Hopefully someone else may have thoughts to add...

No LTE

I purchased a G3 (T-Mobile) phone off craigslist (probably not the smartest idea) and I noticed the phone would not get LTE at all. It only gets 3g/4g and drops calls really bad (generally just goes to dead air, but doesn't actually drop the call). The previous owner unlocked the SIM and was already rooted. Since the SIM was unlocked, I tried a AT&T SIM card from a friends phone while at a location with LTE and the phone still wouldn't get LTE. I forced to phone to use LTE only and it just wouldn't get any service at all. I also searched around on here to find any tips/tricks/solutions, and everything I found didn't work. The phone was still under the manufacturer's warranty and I did send it to LG, but since the phone was "modified", they won't touch it at all. They couldn't even tell me if this was a physical hardware issue or was due to the SIM being unlocked or anything else for that matter. I tried multiple ROMs as well and same issue. I have tried the factory rooted ROM from XDA as well. Does this seem like it's a physical defect of the radio or something due to the SIM being locked and/or being rooted (though I don't think it being rooted would create this issue)? If I can't get it fixed, then I'm basically stuck with a phone that I just purchased that has a janky radio and out $340.00. Any tips or ideas I could try or just point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Question Changing carriers in the US -- also change the firmware?

I have a Samsung S21FE (Snapdragon) model SM-G990U bought from Samsung and originally configured for Verizon. I've used it on the Verizon network since I got it, but just recently switched to T-Mobile. The phone is still using the Verizon firmware however data IS working, as well as calling, texting, and voicemail. But there are still a few things that don't seem quite right and I'm wondering if a firmware update would solve it (also, what is the best to update the firmware?).
For instance, I used to see "5G UW" when I was on Verizon, and now on T-Mobile it should display "5GUC" but I'm just seeing "5G". Also, when it boots up I still see the Verizon logo. Also, even when it's displaying "5G" I am not getting true 5G speeds --> more in the range of 70-100 Mbps. I use the OpenSignal app and it tells me other T-Mobile users in my area are getting way faster speeds. I thought the S21FE had all the necessary bands to get full 5G but either it doesn't, or maybe the firmware is blocking it?
For comparison, we also just switched my daughter's Galaxy S21 at the same time from Verizon to T-Mobile. On her phone, the first time she booted up with the T-Mobile SIM card, she started seeing the T-Mobile logo on bootup and now she sees "5GUC" next to her signal (I do not).
In the Software information section under Service provider software version, my phone has: SAOMC_SM-G990U_OYN_VZW_13_0017 VZW/VZW/VZW.
My daughter's S21 now says "TMB" in her software version.
It seems like her phone automatically updated the firmware over to T-Mobile but mine did not.
Again, not sure if a manual firmware update would solve any of the above issues, and what is the best way to change the firmware. Anyone have any experience with switching carriers on a S21FE? Did you update firmware?
