[Q] Help with constant rebooting - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Have the ATT version. Over the last 2 weeks no matter what I do my phone will not hold onto a ROM. Have done restores, complete wipes and new
installs yet nothing seems to hold. Will do a complete wipe including internal, data, system, etc.. Have tried all different ROMs. From international, to I317. Have tried TW, AOSP, and MIUI. Sometimes can get through setup, but within 1/2 hour reboot into loop. Thought it might be the battery, not sure though. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe Odin back to stock? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Update. I tried Odin back to stock. Was able to update to latest firmware in between reboots. Didn't help. Still constantly reboots randomnly.
Again thanks for taking the time to read.

Search this forum [General or Q&A] for "stuck power button". I recall seeing a few threads about a yr ago with constant rebooting issues.... turned out, by cleaning the power contacts it fixed issue for some folks. Good luck.

I agree with the good doctor...
The behavior of the device suggests a forced reboot via the power button...
The other prospect is not quite so simple...and involves hardware damage....but I would certainly pop the case open and clean those contacts first....g

Well was lucky to solve my issue. It was the battery being bad. Have had the new battery in for a day now and no
problems what so ever. Thanks for everything. Love reading and learning from XDA:good:

all Roms lead to random reboots

recently, my phone has just started a habit of randomly rebooting. i was using myn rls5 with net kernel 4.3.2, but i decided to try something different in an attempt to stop the problem, so i went to mikfroyo with its default kernel. right after i startthe phone and it gets to the homescreen, it starts restarting again. i cleared data and cache between roms, and im using clockworkmod 3.0.0.5
You should always perform a full wipe, to include factory/data, when flashing a new rom.

Also, the dalvik, under advanced? And not flashing a kernel with it?
I found out that Clockwork never cleared Dalvik for me. I changed to AR and after clearing the dalvik I stopped getting reboots or bootloops. Maybe your phone doesn't like the new Clockwork...

that could be it. everytime i install RA though, it complains and doesnt boot into recovery correctly
oohhh. that sucks. try unrooting or using a stock rom for a while. if it keeps rebooting when you browse the web, play games, anything that works the phone, then there is nothing you can do. the phone is fried. wait until it is bad enough that you can do it whenever you want by firing up a game and playing for a few minutes. then bring to the sprint store and they will replace. hah why do i have to be the person who brings the bad news?
again, try unrooting first. you can even leave s-off to re root easily. if you have no reboots, then the problem can be fixed.
i feel so bad giving this news... hah
My phone recently started doing this. Doesn't matter what ROM I'm on, doesn't matter if I un-root with a factory RUU or re-root, doesn't matter what recovery I use, doesn't matter if I completely format my SD card or boot without one. It got to the point I had to take it to Sprint and have them order me a new one.
It would randomly reboot and then go into a bootloop that not even a factory reset would cure, just decides when to stop bootlooping on its own and occasionally works.

If you're using ROM Manager, don't! Download the PC36IMG.zip file from amon's thread and place it on the root of your SD card. Shutdown your device. While pressing the down arrow key, press the power button. You will then enter the bootloader screen. After a few seconds, a few lines of text will appear and the bootloader will automatically detect the. PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the prompts to install. The installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. The recovery version will be listed at the bottom of the screen. Go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING except the SD card itself then go to the flash menu and flash whatever rom you wish to flash.

No, I had already moved away from CM7 when it began. It started out of nowhere and just got worse on a daily basis.
I had also never used Unrevoked. I rooted with toast's original root method way back last August or so and was using the .76 ENG bootloader.
I had similar issues, in terms of both posts, and it got to the point that I just got it replaced from Sprint. It just progressively got worse no matter what was done. Has happened to others ... sounds like the phone might just be going.

Yep, stock. Only apps installed are GoSMS and XDA. I guess I'll give it a factory reset and see if that fixes it, or else it's going back.

i just hate unrooting, the whole process will end up taking a few hours. im probably gonna unroot, and if the basics work, i'll just stick with some simple z4 root and call it a day. any other options? cause htis is already my second phone, not exactly crazy about getting a third.

Unrooting take like 5 minutes...flash s-on tool, then the 5 minutes to run the ruu, then another 5 minutes to re-root.

There are a bunch of bad EVOs floating around. If you have this problem, you're more likely to get one of these as a refurb as they are the ones they get back. They'll replace the display, etc. But its the mobo that is probably the issue, and they don't replace that. They probably just make sure that it boots up and can make a call..

[Q] Nonstop rebooting, even after full wipe/reinstall - last_kmsg inside

Hey everyone.
I know there's a couple other threads with this problem, but none of them included their last_kmsg files. It took a bunch of tries before I could stay booted up long enough to grab it, but I have one.
I'm getting a significant number of reboots on my EVO. Like almost unusable at times. It seems fairly random, although there's a slight suspicion is has something to do with the GPS. Maps has been a crash-cause before and the most recent bout last night was brought on by foursquare. (the annoying part is I had just used 4sq fine 30 minutes prior with no issues. Then, booted it up, refreshed locations and my phone was unusable for hours.)
I've done all the standard things. Fix permissions, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data/system, reinstall the latest CM7 build (update-cm-7.0.2.1-Supersonic-signed.zip), wipe cache, wipe dalvik. I entered my google account info but told it not to sync anything. It is now rebooting less than a minute after it starts up. I haven't installed any apps at all since this most recent wipe/reload of CM7. It reboots with and without the sd card installed.
I'm at a loss here and getting incredibly frustrated. Many replies say it's as easy to fix as wipe everything and re-do it. Obviously something abnormal is screwed up on my phone and I can't figure it out.
Here's the pastebin from this morning: pastebin.com/Ki7H8bH3 (Crap, I don't post here enough to be allowed to post links. Just add the http part to that.)
And then when I got awake enough, I did another complete wipe/reload. The rebooting is even worse now, it's taken me almost an hour to get to a point I can install es explorer to try and pull another file. And when I did, it was blank.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
1. Go to the link below and download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon RA v2.3 and place it on the root of your SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
2. Shutdown your device.
3. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the backup/restore menu and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
4. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card.
5. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you desire to flash.
On many occasions, reflashing the recovery solved rebooting issues and hopefully, it will solve yours.

Hi dougjamal,
Thanks for the reply.
I've made some progress. Last night I had done a majority of what you suggested, with installing amon RA. I've also just formatted my entire sd card just to be sure.
I haven't tried wiping things other than cache and dalvik, so I'll try that.
My progress I mentioned is that I had CM7 up and running until I flashed a new kernel and gapps in there. So I guess I'll just stick with the stock CM7 kernel, try your extra wiping and see how that works.
Thanks!

Ugh, it's the randomness of this that has me so frustrated. I thought I had a good install again, I left it sit on the "touch the android" screen for a few minutes and it stayed on. Made it through the setup process ok. I allowed the setup to "auto-download" a handful of the google apps it asks if you want. Once they got to about 38%... boom, restart.
So I did another toooootal wipe and I'll manually install those apps one by one. We'll see...

Don't rule out a corrupt download. If you have the time, download both Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 and the gapps zip from http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. If you like CM7, you may like Salvage-Mod. It is pure gingerbread. If you decide to flash it, see whether or not you get bootloops with it.

I re-downloaded CM7 this morning thinking that might be the issue, but it hasn't seemed to help. I'll give a different rom a try probably, maybe there's something other than CM7 I'd be content with.
Whelp, I downloaded SalvageMod and their gapps. Wiped everything, installed salvage, installed gapps, rebooted.
I got through set-up, was ok for a couple minutes, then as I was going into my contacts to see if they had sync'd yet... reboot.
This makes me think this can't be a ROM issue.
Any other ideas?
Does the same thing happen when you run a stock (or close-to-stock) rom? Main reason I ask is that this might actually be some sort of hardware problem, but one of the best ways to test for that is to be running on stock software. I wouldn't necessarily suggest flashing an RUU to get to the latest official release, but there are stock rooted roms out there that you could try.
You probably went with CM specifically to get away from Sense and the default HTC stuff (that's most people's reasons anyway), but if you flash a stock rom and it's still rebooting like that then I'd say chances are REALLY good that it's hardware and that you'd have grounds for getting a replacement phone (just remember to unroot first.)
And if it stops randomly rebooting on you then you'll have at least narrowed things down a bit.

Hey jesuspgt,
I haven't tried that yet. I'll look around for a rooted stock ROM later and give that a shot.
My current status is back to uncertainty. At the moment, my evo has been sitting here fine, not rebooting, for the past hour or two. It's still the Salvage ROM I first installed (i.e. I haven't reinstalled it since it rebooted). Now I haven't really used it any, so it might go to hell as soon as I do that, but for now, it's on and only had that one (maybe two, I can't keep track...) initial reboot.
That's what makes it tricky to diagnose. I know using any custom ROM runs the risk of loosing stability and all ROMs probably produce a reboot here and there. Tough to tell if it's just a "comes with the territory" type of reboot or an actual problem.
Even though I'm sure there's some CM features I'll miss, maybe Salvage is my answer.
Thanks!
*sigh* Well I decided to try using some apps and guess what... reboot.
All I was doing was trying to play a game of Androminion, which is about as basic and not-tasking as possible, so I can't imagine that's what crashed things.
The only thing I can think of that you *may* need to do is reflash your hboot and/or your baseband, PRI & NV from within recovery. You can download it from the link below.

Excellent, I'm going to try that. My hboot is still 0.93!
Hey dougjamal,
Just wanted to drop an update. I know how annoying it is to help someone out and never hear how things ended up!
Who knows what combo helped, but I'm fairly stable now. After updating my hboot, I flashed to Sprint Lovers, did the ##GPSCLRX# trick and then flashed to the latest nightly of CM7 (63 I believe). Only one or two crashes and one bootloop since then.
Of course, as luck would have it, a new problem showed up in the form of a dead spot on my touch screen. Right about where the "Clear" button is for notifications, that entire strip across the phone won't respond to touch. I was hoping it was a nightly issue, but I switched to a different rom and the issue was still there. Looks like it's going in for a warranty claim after-all!
Thanks for all your help

Need some help after bad rom install/reset

I attempted my first rooting and install of darthstalkers rom last night. the step by step instructions were well laid out, and the process was pretty smooth. however after completing the rom install, and began getting various errors such as 'gallery not responding', 'omacp has stopped working',etc. over a dozen different errors in total. kies wouldnt connect to restore my settings, etc.
i decided to flash back to stock, and followed the instructions perfectly, which again were very easy. kies connected instantly on stock, and everything seemed ok. however im still getting the same errors as i was with the darthstalker rom. now i bought my s3 outright (its not part of any package), so i have no warranty issues, however my phone is completely hosed now. i cant send texts, cant view email, nothing. i'm honestly regretting ever doing this.
any help/tips/suggestions so that i can go back to the way i was? ive tried everything that my googlefu has led me to, and nothing has worked.

I did it last night, but in my tired confusion, i may have fudged it up. going to do it now and ill update in a few minutes. Thanks for the help thus far.
when flashing to stock through Odin you retain the same cache and therefore you can have some issues of force closes..which is why a factory reset is always best....and mandatory when going from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4
That's a very stable ROM and I'm surprised at the issues you had. I have a feeling it wasn't the ROM or anything you did persay but bad flashes happen which it why most of us have a nandroid to fall back on just in case. Sometimes a re-flash does the trick to fix problems.

Ok well i wiped cache/data in recovery mode and all seemed ok (not sure if its worth noting, but the recovery menu/screen was totally different from last night - the one last night was touch screen with ++++ before and after each menu choice, and the one today has me using the volume keys to move and power to select).
i went to do kies restore and it went smoothly, but is now sitting on the last option, 'restoring call log', for quite a while. So i guess ill update this again when kies finishes up.
10 minutes later and its still sitting at restoring call log. should i abort this?

do any of you trusted members do this for a fee? i really liked what i saw with darthstalkers, but cannot be bothered to go through this again.

Settings, not much can be done about that. It's needed to wipe them when going to a custom ROM (same goes when updating to avoid issues).
Titanium Backup can save your Wifi, apps and apps data (requires root). Also can save your texts and call logs with it.

Sounds like you booted into stock recovery which is what you wanted.
I used to think it was a pain restoring settings all the time but after 100 or so ROM's over various devices its takes 10-15 minutes to do that and install my apps form the market (I only use maybe 20 or so and maybe are one I have apk for already.
Everyone's first time is a bit awkward and messy... gets fun after you do it enough
So its possible it was just a bad install? This isnt a very technical or tough thing to do, but becomes a serious pain int he ass when things go awry. Would love to have the darthstalkers setup, though. I just hate to do it and have it all be FUBAR'd again.

Keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM also means flashing the updates (as it can always get better and there are bugs to fix), meaning that you will have to factory reset every time (which resets your settings, cleans your apps and such). So it's something you kinda have to get used to when flashing.
That's also why I suggested Titanium Backup, it saves a lot of time when it comes to apps, wifi, call logs, texts, etc. You'll still have to go through your settings, emails and accounts though.
If you wanna go ahead and give Darthstarkers another try, re-download it and make sure you follow their full instructions.

its true. the first time around is always a little bumpy. as long as you are doing things correctly and installing the correct files, things will only go smoother with time.
this is just my preference, but once i've transcended stock (to aosp), i dont mess around with kies anymore. i know you had your things backed up via that route but ask around and you'll see, there are a lot of useful apps out there that can backup and seamlessly restore everything you want after flashing.
dont give up. everyone deserves the performance and style they want on their device. next time you're ready, let us know. between myself, hednik and a few others, we can get you the best way to do this right here in one thread versus 20 different sites/threads/opinions. cheers

I hope you find the time to enjoy one of those custom ROM at some point and we'll be here if you need help again. Good luck!

[Q] HELP! my note 2 wont boot past samsung logo!

hey, new user here, don't know if this has come up before but i did a search and haven't found anything that has the same particulars as i do.
recently my phone hasn't been responding to power button or home button wake up, intermittently. freezes up sometimes and some apps force close more than usual. then the other day, my phone died on me (full battery discharge) and when i finally got around to charging it, it charged fully but it wouldn't turn on past the Samsung boot logo, and gets real hot while doing so.
Also, the samsung boot logo appears before the AT&T splash screen tone starts.
im running stock Rooted 4.1.2 with the latest perseus kernel version.
any suggestions? i havent made a nandroid in a couple weeks, so my preferred route would be without a data wipe.
i can still access CWM recovery, btw.
well damn wheres the help?
I would download the stock rom and flash it again. If that doesnt work, custom rom time. I honestly cant see this problem getting fixed without a data wipe though good luck and keep me posted.

With the non-response issues you describe, and the fact that you are seeing multiple force closes on the device....start with a wipe of the cache and dalvik cache in recovery.
It sounds as if the device is having cache file management issues, and trouble within the file structure.
While I dont think you have any hardware issues, it does sound like the software is suffering for one reason or another, and a base cleaning of the caches may help.
If no improvement is seen after cache cleaning, then we move to the data next.
I realize you want to keep your data intact, but if corruption has occured, you will have no choice but to factory restore the device and test again.
Try the cache cleaning first, then boot and test....
Beyond that...as the above poster states...a fresh install may be needed....g
Before a data wipe try reinstalling the kernel, and also try dirty flashing the Rom.
Not sure I would recommend a dirty flash to him. Plenty of times the result for users has been bad. Though as stated above yours, It does appear to be a file system error. He is probably right and I should have thought about wiping the dalvic cache first.

i was afraid this would happen....
tried wiping both caches with no new results.
ive read that dirty flash has had mixed results. if i can at least get the OS booted so that i could backup what i need to, that would be a good thing.
im thinking its a kernel issue, since the phone gets real hot while stuck on the samsung screen. could i be right?
thanks guys:good:
i also tried reinstalling the kernel through cwm recovery, nothing new
FIXED
did a data/factory reset from recovery. it kept everything! thank god for cloud backups. Google is the JOINT!! i even kept my kernel and root, and at&t backed up my texts and calls....thanks everybody for the help, i really appreciate it!
its still kinna hot though...turned it off to let it cool down and see what happens when i start it back up....will keep posted if anything
Great. Know I didnt help too much but glad you got it worked out.

Great news ....
Data corruption is so very easy to get.
As we mix and match pieces of code, those issues do arise.
Sadly, the causes are often elusive.
But the plan "B" wipe generally does the trick, as is the case here.
Happy flashing....g

Random reboots and freezing

Hey everyone. I am having random reboots and freezes. I was originally on a stockish OB7 rom. I decided to flash to the Alliance ROM but, I was having some issues. So I flashed stock OB7 through odin 3.07. Used CF-Auto Root. Then chilled. I started getting random reboots all day. About that time the OE1 came out so I thought skip it i'll just roll stock for a while but, low and behold some where in the update it got messed up and I lost my dialer and my camera. So then I essentially had no phone which, has caused me to have to use my wife's old Iphone, which pains me beyond belief. Because of OE1 not having a TAR I could not flash the ROM to fix it and I didn't want anything else random or crazy to happen so I waited for something with a TAR. So I flashed OF5 and still got random reboots and freezes that cause my phone to not turn on and I have to remove the battery to get it to power on. So, now I'm on OG5. It runs great but, still random reboots and freezes and won't turn back on . I can deal with a few random reboots but, I can't deal with the freezing and the phone not coming back on. Does anyone know the cause of this issue and are there any fixes? I have searched high and low. I have been flashing for a while so I know the steps there. Just looking for some help from the group. Thanks. Sorry for the long message I just want to try to be clear. Thanks again. I appreciate any help given.

Yep. Multiple times. Have odined numerous times. Wiped Cache. All that.
Odin og5
Beginning to sound like something wrong with the phone, if I'm understanding what you have reported the problem is president across wipes and Odin installs of 3 different versions of lollipop.
Did you ever change kernels?

I really hope not. I hope that it will work it self out. I had a lot of trouble with OG5 when it came to Odin but, it did eventually take. If there is something wrong with the phone itself what could it be? I feel like I have read everything from freezing when changing towers, to damaged partitions, SD card issues, needing a new battery. I just hope it all pans out.

No I never changed Kernels on any of the ROMS. I would assume because they are stock they should be okay. Especially OG5 .tar file. It should have had everything.
