Hi guys,
I recently bought a HTC One M8. About a week ago I clicked a fake link on facebook which directed me to a homepage, I closed the page without anything happening. Then a couple of days later I began seeing a strange icon in my status bar (see attached) when sending and receiving texts and calls. Can anyone help me find out if this is some kind of virus/malware/spyware or if I'm just paranoid.
Any help would be grateful
Network traffic activity icon, perhaps?

It might be, im just wondering why i can't seem to find it anywhere.
Yes its network activity. Data Usage to be exact. I noticed it on Pushbullet while receiving a text message... Nothing to worry about

Yeah its annoying in my opinion. This is my first device on Verizon network but I've never had a phone that feels the need to display a notification icon for a split second when I send or receive a text message. Pretty stupid imo. Maybe someone can find a tweak to make it not appear???

Hey guys,
Picked up a desire yesterday and its great, though I'm having some issues with sms. I notice I don't receive any texts until I send a text first, then I'll receive 2 or 3 texts, timestamped in the past, up to an hour ago!
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks.
edit: unrooted on o2
i get a similar problem, i know i should have received a text message but it doeant show up for hours.
unrooted on tmobile uk
Most likely when your phone is connected over GPRS the text don't come through till you disconnect, used to happen on my N95.
So if my phone is operating in GPRS mode, until it decides it doesn't need the internet anymore and disconnects, it won't retrieve texts... right. So any workarounds or fixes for this?
Prety much, after I use GPRS I just made a call and during or after the call my text came in.
Been getting this all day, are people really just dealing with this or is it only a few people that have this issue?
I am having another problem... on T-mobile, my phone won't download MMS messages. It will just say Download error, General Network Failure... After it expired (3days) , I was sent a link to the T-mobile website, where I am able to see it for 14 days.
Another problem that I am having, the phone is struggling sending long text messages... 4 or 5 normal lenght messages 500-600 characters... I am using the Text App provided with the phone.
I have a problem that I dont think is an actual problem I think its just how the phone works, and tbh its a bit rubbish.
If you dont have signal when you hit send (im my office at work I only get signal on a little square of the desk) the phone says "message not sent". Sometime when it gets signal it will send the message, but if it doesnt get signal quick enough it seems to just give up sending.... a bit lame really....
I'm going to post a message up with the T-mobile UK MMS settings so people in future can find it on search. Have a look in 5 mins.
JAmes.
I've got the same issue with my HTC Desire.
My operator is a Belgium one, namely Mobistar.
I've got the impression that when i open the sms box, i start seeing the messages. Don't know if it's the communication that goes wrong, or the 'throughput' in the phone (screen, alerting...).
After installing (and using of course) chompSMS, this problem is gone... yipppie...
hi guys,
Something strange happened to my Desire on Sunday and it has caused a few issues for me since.
The attahced pic shows a symbol in the notification bar that looks like a fence.
(I cannot attach the screen shot as i have not made enough posts but PM me if u wish to see the symbol and i can show u it)
Since this symbol has appeared all my texts have dissapeared and i am unable to send or receive texts.
Also when i go into my dialler my call history has cleared and when i try to using the quick input method of finding a contact (eg 3-2-3 for DAD) no contacts come up.
The phone does work to make calls but it can only be done by going into contacts and sleecting the number from there.
Anyone ever come across this before and know how to resolve it?
BTW i am using MIUI rom
TIA
Ok symbols will probably be different in a standard ROM but here is a list of what they are and what they mean http://htcdesireportal.com/htc-desire-android-notification-and-phone-icons/
SOunds like you are refering to the notification for SIM2 features. Possible sim fault. Call your telco and ask them to check you Bearer services for incoming and outgoing text and also to check your diameter router settings.
Sounds like Visitor Mode. Press Power Button and Disable.
Basically Semi locks down the phone if people want a look but you don't want them Using it for Calls/Texts/Other stuff.

On the stock touch wiz messaging app I get these type of alerts/indicators/notifiers?? but am unaware of what they mean. The messages go through fine, but I get this small "X" right above the date on only some messages.
Does anyone else experience this? Has this already been discussed somewhere else?
I've attached a picture with arrows pointing at what I'm talking about.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.
From what I know that means you have messages in those threads that failed to send.
Or rather, your phone THINKS the message did not send. I'm having this issue a lot lately with Sprint and this phone. In my area in fact a lot of people on the sprint network, including those using boost mobile, are having issues. The phone says the messages failed to send, but they actually do.
I have alot of text messages that fail as well. My wife's phone doesn't have this problem.

happens in low coverage areas. happens to me all the time at home. phone will say sending failed, but still sends, and people still reply. i used to keep hitting the exclamation point and it would keep trying to resend, even though it really went thru lol

That's their Google Talk status (you probably have their gmail addy in their contact info). The grey dot with an X means they are offline. If they're online, it would be a green dot; if they were connected and away, it would be a yellow dot with clock hands in it.
Thanks everyone. What's funny is that I dont have gmail addresses assigned to those contacts. Will look into it though, thanks again.
I talked to sprint and they are aware of this issue they are working to find a permanent fix, now this is what I was told. They also say turning the phone off and back on forces update into the phone because it reset with the network when you turn it off.
Just a bug probably.

That might actually be true. The next day after making the original post they were suddenly gone. I have not seen them since. It must be a bug they have to work out.
Thank you.
I had about 6 of those notifiers come up today and I immediately turned off my phone and re-started and they were all magically gone. Been texting since and haven't seen anymore.
Re-starting does indeed work as a temporary fix I suppose. Sprint should hurry up with an update already though.
I've noticed an issue on my Galaxy Nexus (Stock Rooted 4.0.4, VZW) where randomly a text message will disappear.
I don't have any idea what is causing it and its so sporadic, it happens maybe once every 1,000 texts.
The only way I know I'm even missing a text is if I see it appear in the notification bar but not be there when I go into the messaging app (Using stock messaging) or, because I have mightytext installed, I'll see the message forwarded to my browser but I'll notice its gone from my phone.
I was able to pull a logcat after it happened most recently, so if someone thinks they would be able to decipher some information from it, let me know.
I'm posting because I'm wondering if I'm the only one seeing this issue or if others are in the same boat.
Thanks in advance and let me know if anyone would like some more info...I've been trying to nail this thing down for months now.
You're welcome to put it up on pastebin or something and post it, but I would first eliminate MightyText as the first possible problem. Uninstall it and see if it still happens.
I had the same problem when still on 4.0.2 stock, unrooted. Only ever used the stock messaging app. It happened very sporadic, with the same symptoms you described.
Messages popped up in notification bar but could be nowhere to be found in messages app.
Since upgrading to 4.0.4 it never happened again, or at least I didn't notice.
As you are on 4.0.4 already, that's probably not comforting.

Yeah, it happens so infrequently that I'm not surprised you haven't noticed it since updating, but nice to know someone else has the same issue.
Do you have mighytext installed or can we rule that out as a culprit?
Do you have any SMS Backup applications installed?
If not, I recommend the "SMS Backup +" by Jan Berkel.
Works amazing on my ICS.
Does backups of SMS, MMS and Call Logs (if you want.)
Yes, I do have that installed, but thats not really relevant to the issue I described here.
Thanks.

Sorry - I realized I never finished my train of thought. Got "distracted" as someone walked into my office.
To continue, when your texts disappear from your phone, do they also disappear from your Gmail SMS label?
As per every 1000 texts - I assume you get a TON of texts per day?
I ask - because my cousin who is a promoter also gets/sends 1000's of text messages a week, and he made a funny comment yesterday about how some of his incoming texts "vanished."
He doesn't have SMS Backup+, so I couldn't verify it for him at the time. I'm wondering if you and him have the same problems?
Regards,
var
I also have SMS Backup + installed, but not Mighty text. When a disappearing text arrived, it never even had a time to kick in, even though I'm on wifi and it's said to backup upon arrival. The text is just gone, right after the notification vanishes.
But hard to investigate as it happens really very sporadic... And yup, I get hundreds of messages each day in a developing country, where sometimes also sms are not delivered, so everybody knows and it's not that big of a problem.

All of my SMS and MMS messages seem to be sending out fine as I recieve no "unable to send" errors, but my contacts are not always recieving my messages. This seems to be happening more often lately, and affects MMS more than SMS. I am not sure if this problem has to do with signal strength as my phone usually shows 2 to 4 bars, but sometimes drops to 1 or 0 bars and then goes back up again. Could something be wrong with my antennae? Perhaps when I am sending out the messages that are not recieved, my signal strength is bouncing around but not being updated graphically on the phone, and the messages are "lost" in the system or not being sent out at all?
This also seems to affect some of my contacts more than others, so maybe it also has to do with their signal strength, although I have not heard of them complaining about their text message not being recieved by their contacts or not recieving messages (except from me). I always thought if you could not recieve a text message because of a bad connection, it would be recieved when your connection was finally good.
Anyone else experiencing this problem? Seeing all my messages sent out fine but not knowing if they are being recieved makes communication via text message rather stressful.
Thanks
What about receiving? I have a friend that keeps missing MMS I send but I always get hers. It's really frustrating.

My brother has T-Mobile (we on family plan) and my sister in law has Verizon and they both didnt get my MMS message, as well as my neice on Mobi.
Update: I sent a message today to my brother and he got the message and all the other ones that I sent but he did not recieve. I also instantly got a MMS message he sent a few days ago. I am not sure if my messages were stuck in the T-Mobile system itself, or my message today triggered my phone or the system to send the rest. Perhaps there is an issue with the tower located two block from my house?
Tmobile issue dude . I almost broke up :-/

Yea I had a pic from Thursday show up on Saturday.
Can you do me a favor? Check your call log. I hadn't mad any calls in the last few days but I had like 80 in the logs. They were both incoming and outgoing and all said "cancelled". I'm wondering if it's cause of all the failed texts...
I have to say this pisses me off because some of my contacts periodically don't receive my messages. Very frustrating especially when it happens mid conversation and then you wait days thinking that the other person is ignoring and vice versa. It's making me seriously consider switching phones.

Me too had been having this issue lately.
I see it as the sandy effect here on the east coast. has been improving slowly though.

My call logs is displaying all of my incoming and outgoing calls correctly. I have not had any issues recently with messages not being recieved by my contacts either, so prehaps the JB update fixed something? I am not sure if it is T-Mobile or the closest tower either because others on T-Mobile in my area have not experienced this problem (or perhaps not enough to notice anything). I will monitor signal strength and double check with my contacts if they are recieving my messages.
Weird.. I can't figure out the call log thing cuz I have incoming calls that say cancelled. It spent really make sense. I thought it must be related to the texts being goofy.
The problem with the call log is that it doesn't really show what we want. How? How would you know if you didn't get someone's text unless they told you? Or what if your phone says it sent the message but the other person didn't get it? What gives? The phone always sends the text but the recipient doesn't always receive it. That's why I used to use delivery reports but on this phone they're too annoying and the system is poorly implemented compared to stock Android (which has the best implementation) or even HTC Sense.
