We've had a number of Droids with desk and vehicle docks, but all of them were the keyboard kind (D1,2,3&4). It's been great being able to just plunk them down into their dock and not bother fiddling with cords. I'd like to accomplish the same thing with the Moto X, but the general feedback on the Griffin docks does not leave me encouraged.
Since we never had any of the portrait-oriented phones I don't have any of the side-connecting docks to test. Can anyone else confirm/deny if any of the older Droid vehicle docks might be 'close enough' to be made workable with a Moto X?

Well kinda, I use the, now cheap, Bionic dock by trimming the clamp & using the internal cable externally. You do need to trim plastic & use epoxy putty hold the female end of the new "power tether". It reaches nicely to the charge port. Edit: I keep my X in its Staples brand clear case while in the dock.
Efing iPhone will overwrite the first pic with the next!!

Yes those are wire wheels abrasions, my effort to have a case that sticks to my lap. Where is my old tire tread , all rubber OtterBox?
Got any pix of it? How well does it hang onto the Moto X, in landscape mode?
I will edit with my x, but the iPhone screen is stunning

One of the guys in the Zenis dock thread (international GS3 accessories forum) shared a link to this dock and I thought I'd post it here. I already have the Zenis dock and I like it well enough, but the addition of an aux port sounds great to me. That brand showing on the front is an eyesore, but at only $11.90, I can't resist.

using this disk the data transfer doesn't work. Is that possible?
Sorry guys. I've been meaning to update this for a while now.
Long story short... If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't buy this dock. Not for the GS3 at least. Maybe for a Galaxy Note.
It is very obviously a generic "one size fits all" desktop dock and while the dock does register as such (can launch clock, alarm, car dock app, etc) it's simply awkward to use. The phone sits on the very long micro USB pin and wobbles. Probably isn't good for the connector. Its as if a bumper should be used, but it didn't come with one.
The last picture (below) shows the phone with a case on and it's still loose enough to tilt though the picture makes it look way worse than it is. Lastly, pulling it off of the dock is not a one handed affair. I' not sure why that is, but... that's just how it is.
Cheap yes. A keeper no (though I am using it until I find a better one that has aux out). If you don't need aux out, the Zenis dock I linked to in the OP is not bad at all. I use it at work. It does not activate the dock function though.
Pictures below:
any time a seller posts a dock as an accesory for a phone, and the phone is photoshopped onto the dock, you should know to stay away.
(look at the pics.. the phone IS photoshopped on it.)
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum today, and have just reached 10 posts so now hopefully can post images.
I have read a few threads where people were trying to find a decent car dock for the GS3 with cases on, so thought I would write this brief guide on how I overcame the issue using my old iPhone 3GS adjustable Brodit dock, and modified it slightly to fit the GS3 with or without a case.
This case allows you to charge when docked, and adjust to fit with pretty much any case, and also swivel to view in landscape mode for GPS navigation etc.
Heres a link to the one I bought a few years ago for the 3gs so you can see what it was like originally. http://www.dsldevelopments.com/brodit/fitting_Instructions/Mounts.asp?Brodit=516042&Make=Apple&Model=iPhone%203GS
Heres some pics of mine now.
I turned the sides around so they were opposite as this meant it supported the phone further up, as the S3 is quite a lot taller than the 3gs. Due to swopping them over I had to file the groove so it went the full length for the phone to slide into.

I used a heat gun to bend the rear support bar back slightly, as on the 3gs it hooked over the top of the phone, whereas the s3 was too big so it just supports the rear now. This pic shows the back support and the adjustable turn screw things on the rear which enable it to fit with a case
I used a piece of rubber/plastic which I cut to size to hold the cable firmly in place.
Here it is with the phone in, it also turns sideways to allow the phone in landscape for satnav etc
Hope its all clear, im not the best at explaining but I try my best lol. If I missed anything just ask.
I hope it helps some people out.
John
I'm looking to find a Dock that I can use in the car. Unfortunately I have not used one since my old D1 days, and am way out of the loop as to what the good ones are. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I use this one.

i wish these case making companies would make mounts too.
i don't want to use a poorly made, time consuming universal grip on my phone because it has a case on it.
recently bought a mountek universal based on high reviews and testimonials. seriously though, that product is a joke. the grip is not strong and the mount has an inherent design flaw... it is designed to literally seperate by putting pressure between a cd slot or dash seems and the screw to make it tight WILL jack up what you are putting it in. i returned it.
otterbox cant make a mount that fits its line of cases? i have a commuter case and i wish there was a specific mount for it
i have a couple ideas to get one, but it would cost me several hundred dollars and lots of time.

Bought the Original HTC Car Dock from HTC, bit pricier than i would like ( almost 35 from amazon.de) but i have to say that its great. The fact that the recharge cable is attached to the dock and charges every time you put them in the case is really practical.

I like this. And the fact that it would support my case is even better.
Hey guys... so, I moved from the DNA to the HTC one about 3 months ago... Sort of have mixed feelings about the phone... Not a fan of the camera.. but MOSTLY REALLY miss my wireless charging...
SO, I decided to do something about that...
ANYWAY, im looking for anyone out there who might have a lead on REALLY shallow Micro USB connectors.
My current set is using a bunch of parts found on eBay.
USB Micro is about 1cm long (i need it about half that or less so it doesnt stick out from the case.
Im using a ULAK case (Somewhat bulky rubber/hard plastic... but it hides the Energizer/Blackberry Qi receiver fairly well)
And lastly, im using an old Energizer Qi receiver pad I had lying around.
I am happy to upload pics on how I accomplished this (it's actually relatively easy) and I am waiting on some S3 Qi pads to come in as theyre about half the thickness of the blackberry one Im using...
Anyway, if there's interest... id be happy to build some prototypes for people to try out.
I'd love to try it out.

If it's too thick, you could buy a cheap connector and remove the plastic. It looks like it could be flexible enough.
Wish I could simply stick the one processor in the dna. It has definitely been my favorite device.
Hi there,
Considering the huge size of the phone, not all car phone holder work with it.
I bought this one from AliExpress:

Cobao brand, around $6, no problem at all, it's big enough for the Mi Max 2, even with a case. I'm using a very slim case, but there is plenty of room for a regular case.
I only buy holders that can "grab" the vent with a hook and a spring, those are very stable, so I didn't consider other options.
You can find it here (not sure if AliExpress store links works for long but just in case): https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Cob...Iphone-6-Plus-5s-For-Samsung/32714737459.html
Thanks for posting the tip!
I ordered one like that. This brand "Cobao" makes some really funky accessories. Even phone holders to fit into car CD drives.
I never used a mount that grabs the vent. Interesting concept. I'm always concerned the mount slips off.
Already had one mount that slipped off the mount, breaking my phone screen when it dropped on the shift stick
Another Option

I picked one of these up a while back. It's big enough for the Mi Max 2, but a little too big for smaller phones. Depending on the car and who rides shotgun, it may be a good idea to grab a drill, some bolts, rubber washers, a sharpie, and a screwdriver to mount it properly.
I drive a tiny 97 Corolla, so the back seat was nonexistent to fit this in its intended position. I put it right through an aluminum plate used for supporting an optional "premium" stereo. It was premium for 97, I guess. Now head units are so proprietary that a phone is the best you can do for music in most cases.
Get the Baesues Gravity Lock Holders. They work great even on bumpy terrain unlike magnetic holders but still allow popin/popout usage.
