Hi,
My sister just bought a galaxy s4 mini from amazon (from amazon direct not from an amazon seller), and is finding that whenever she installs an app from play store, she is getting a Chinese notification??
any idea what it is or why it's happening?

This is most likely a notification of the app Vroot or Kingo root. These are chinese rooting programms and they give you messages when you install something. (At least this happens on Vroot)
Maybe it's a used phone if you didn't root it. If so, I'd maybe return it.
it shouldn't be rooted it's brand new sealed box from amazon
presumably, i can fix this for her by flashing the latest BTU firmware using odin?
having a look on sammobile the latest version is I9195XXUBML4? although this says black edition? if her isn't the black edition, the latest stock firmware will be I9195XXUBMJ7???
can anyone confirm this for me before i go ahead for her. this won't void warranty right, since it's stock firmware?

latest is I9195XXUBML4
i wonder how it's installed when it's sealed, then probably the samsung staff repacked it.
It's not so cool!!!~~
If I were you I'd send it back!
Anyway.. if you want to reflash firmware, you'll most likely get KNOX enabled! *warning* It's been reported by a user here
but the BML4 says "(black edition)" on sammobile.com?? can this be flashed on a non-black edition?
I'll have to check if it's rooted or not when she gets here, i'm just trying to get the right firmware downloaded before she arrives.
if i get the mj7, that doesn't say black edition i don't think, and if there is a more recent version she can get it ota right?
::EDIT::
ooops, just double checke dthe firmware database and there is a BML4 non black edition.....downloading now
::EDIT2::
yup, it's been rooted.
looks like it is an official samsung phone so far as i can tell but it's been rooted, annoyingly. i'm gonna try putting the latest btu firmware on for her, and failing that amazon can have it back.
warning to anyone buying a phone from amazon......you might not be getting what you expect!!!!
::EDIT3::
all sorted. now has totally stock firmware, knock not tripped, not rooted and everything looking good
thanks for helping

First, thank you guys. Just bought a note 8 WiFi version GT-5110. It is a good device, loved it. I've been researching and reading all over the posts about rooting, install custom rom, firmware and etc... I guess the first thing to do is to root my note 8. So, before I root my device I want to know for sure I can return back to original unmodified stock. I found that I can use ODIN to flush official firmware. However, I checked samMobile for the firmware for my country which is Canada. But I couldn't find. I used toolkit to check my note 8 firmware. It is N5110XXBMC9 and the region is XAC. It is the oldest. Hate it, we are so close to the us but always treated differently, and very thing is more expensive.
Question:
1 Can I just flash US region firmware? Since I have the WiFi, it has nothing to do with the phone and carrier. Or, can someone tried to flush a different region firmware tell me what is the outcome.
2 If I flash an US firmware, will I still able to claim warranty in Canada(just in case).
3 Will Flushing firmware with ODIN increase flush count, even I flush with official stock?
4 Last question, after rooting, will note 8 achieve floating multiwindow like note 10. Or, we are still limited to have to window side by side, but with rooting, we can put more apps to choose.
I know you guys are busy, if anyone can help me or point a useful post for me I would be really appreciated.

I would also like to know the answer to this question as I have a New Zealand international model but the rom is old. Can I flash the UK version which is the most uptodate. (I have the wifi version).
Thanks
I decided to give it a try myself.
I flashed the latest BTU N5110XXBMF2 which worked a treat. I checked and this is what is displayed
Custom Binary Download = No
Current Binary = Samsung Official
System Status = Official
So it worked fine for me.

Hello. I am also having this issue, with a GT-N5110 from canada. May I ask the steps in which you flashed the firmware? Did you do it via Odin?

I just downloaded the firmware and used Odin. It didn't wipe the sdcard it just updated the apps. Its worked well ever since.
I have since updated to N5110XXCMK1 using the same method.

Thanks. I used the same method to flash 4.2.2 on my device. I am also now on xxcmk1.

flash counter
Hi guys! I was looking to know about this. And I got a few question:
1. I want to make sure about the flash counter. If I change to XXCMK1 my rom, the flash counter goes to 1, or would be like the note 8.0 came with that stock room (nothing change in the counter)?
2. It is a little off of the main question but I will ask anyway: have you tried to add icloud email to the native email manager in the XXCMK1 rom? (Asking just in case you did it, since I read that rom is the one that doesnt have problem to set up in the native email manager?
Thank you guys (literally). I will appreciate your answers.

1. My flash counter did not change when I flashed 4.2.2 using Odin.
But it did when I used auto cf root afterwards to root the phone.
2. Nope I haven't tried.

I had an issue where I (think) I soft-bricked my device, as I could not get it to boot up, it would get stuck on the "samsung" logo and then display a black screen and go no further. My device is Canadian as well, and was running stock Canadian firmware, but I had rooted it before hand and was attempting to flash firmware from another country.
Well, I ended up downloading the US firmware for 4.2.2 from another thread here on XDA and flashed that in a last attempt to fix it, and it worked! But now I'm running US firmware. Since the KitKat update is now available in Canada, I'm downloading that as we speak and am going to flash it when it's done.

Hey, so I've been bouncing around this place (as well as the google search engine) looking for a download link to a stock firmware (4.1.2) for the SGH-I317M (Bell) version.
Every link I've gotten to, thus far anyway, has been a "hotfile" link, and, as I'm sure you're aware, is no longer available.
Can somebody direct me to a download link to it? I'm looking to unroot my phone so I can update to 4.3
Many thanks in advance.
Go to www.sammobile.com/firmwares type I317M in search box... then scroll down to the Canada (Bell Mobile) firmware you want

Yeah, I tried doing that and it said the previous version was unavailable to users who aren't "members"; and when I login, it only gives me the current update (which I could easily get from Kies itself if I was going to go that route).
I've managed to find the previous version 4.1.1 via http://stockroms(dot)net/file/GalaxyNote2 - (replace the dot with a 'period' there) so I'll give that a whirl first.
Thanks for replying though!

I'm not sure what happened... but, apparently ODIN won't allow my phone to connect to the port correctly.
So, I finally got the previous website working as well; so, now I'm downloading v 4.1.2 from there.
I have the USB debugging mode on, is there something else I should be doing?
If you update to 4.3...you WILL have a locked bootloader...and currently no good way to root..
Additionally....your KNOX flag will trip and your warranty is toast...if you attempt to root...( as of today, and until the devs can fix Sammy's latest patch)...
Beyond that...you can never go back to 4.1.2 again...
Stay on a 4.1.2 bootloader without KNOX and then you can flash every rom we have along with a full return to stock if you want...
An update to 4.3 will stop any means of going back....g
I guess this is true of the official OTA update people are getting?
Man, I don't want that!

You know that Knox is a Samsung thing right? That and the Knox warranty flag that Samsung says voids their hardware warranty if triggered.

Yes, I'm completely aware... I should have said "loved", although I still love my phone and Samsung as a product; however, KNOX is really annoying at the moment.
I've been an Android lover for the past few years anyway, S2, S2 HD LTE, Sony Xperia Z, and now a Note 2. I really don't want to bash Samsung, because I think they make the best product in the market; but, yeah, this KNOX thing really needs to go.
New firmware T700ZSU1ANL1 and T800ZSU1ANL1 (Hong Kong both).*
Can i install these in europeans tablets?
Thanks
Any ideas?
I have installed it on the US WiFi only version, so I don't see it being a problem, if it doesn't install you can always Odin back to your stock rom... if you have a 3/4g type tablet then you may want to not flash it..... I'm digging the new kernel personally.

Can anyone confirm that flashing update from a different region manually via Odin on an unrooted device will have exactly the same result as if it was an official OTA update (apart maybe from overwriting /data).
So there should be no problem getting OTA Lollipop when it eventually arrives? And apps which check if device is rooted like the banking and TV ones(Barclays, Sky Go etc) should be seeing 100% official unrooted OS?

Theres an app calplled root cloak to hide root from apps. I dont really care on being on stock rom just to get ota lollipop. There would most liekly be a custom rooted lollipop rom when lollipop is out.

Unfortunately none of the cloaking apps work on Sky Go or Barclays and other banking apps. Neither does RootCloak or RootCloak Plus Xposed mods .
That is why I asked the question. Not really bothered if it just means losing OTAs - provided everything else is still 100% official unrooted after Odin upgrade of UK tab with HK firmware. That's why I ask will this be the case?

Yeah, I'd do that too. But these apps are too important to me to risk losing them so I will probably just chicken out and wait for the OTA. Thing is, if the update works, I can't see any reason why the root-checking apps would be able to tell except if they were spotting non-UK codes. I do know their checks are a lot more sophisticated than looking only for the presence of SU and busybox. They for sure examine parts of the kernel and the DRM files as well.
My logic tells me that if the apps don't work with the HK firmware then all I need do is to flash back to the official UK XXU1 version. That's why I am just asking is anyone knows of any other differences that might be exposed using the Odin method to update?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10." Dazzling White 16GB Wifi + LTE (both in one).
Which "version" as in SM-T8xxx) should I be looking for? What's the highest possible Android version for it atm? 5.1 yet? Are there Gapps to install? Last time I tried to remove some Samsung stuff, my Gapps stopped working completely.
I would really like to keep this device rooted and up to date with as little bloatware as possible.
Also, is it possible to return to stock and unroot, to make it look as if you never rooted it? If so, is there a download link somewhere?
Thanks in advance.

Settings/general/about device and you will see SM-T8XX. The highest version depends on your device number and stock/custom but generally Samsung is only up to 5.0.2 max amd some parts of the world do not even have that for an OTA update (www.sammobile.com will have listed the latest official firmware). 5.1 only for some custom roms. As for gaps that is why I tend to go with roms stock or other wise pre debloted by ppl on here instead of messing with it myself too much annoyance trying to figure out what is safe to get rid of and what is not, but having a backup is always a great idea.

Yes you can go back to stock and yes you can unroot, but no it will always look like you did something since there is no way to flash without tripping knox.

I basically rooted the stock 5.0.2, flashed twrp, removed some programs, and restored them again since Gapps were crashing after removal. I just want to put it back how it all was, so I am eligible for OTA's again.
I honestly have no clue if just flashing the stock firmware will set you to being eligible to reciece ota updates. You should always make a backup befpre flashing anything for the exact reason of what happened to you. But saying that www.Sammobile.com does have the stock firmware that you can download.

Yes, I examined an OTA's script for the Nexus 10 and it does a check sum validation on a large number of apps before it will apply the update. If any of the check sums fail the update is aborted. That means if you remove or alter any of the files/apps being checked the OTA cannot be applied but if you have added files/apps that then those changes are ignored and you will have the OTA applied. Rooting adds files. I suspect that all Android OTAs work the same as they do directly from Google (Nexus devices).

Hey everyone.
I'm running on completely Stock 5.1.1 OK1 on my Note 4 and just recieved the official MM OTA update last night. Due to my phone having a lot of junk and being laggy I decided to flash the official firmware from any external method to have a clean install of the os. I heard about Samsung Kies which makes a back up of your phone and installs the latest os, I installed and backed up my phone last night but it didn't seem to give me an update on the os, it said "This is the latest version" (5.1.1 COK1).
My main concern about this is. I've bought this phone from Pakistan (used phone but in brand new condition) and I'm currently living in Malaysia and I have no idea who was the previous owner of this phone. In Kies it shows the phone number different than what I have (maybe its the Sprint phone number?).
What if my carrier is locked by having a clean install? Or any sort of other related issue occurs.
Please take some time to enlighten the facts from your knowledge, will highly appreciate it.
Regards.

Yeah but you totally missed my question here.
Its not that I don't want to do some research myself, I'm a student and I'm busy most of the time. So if anyone can take out their precious time to answer my question I'd really appreciate the help.
If you're concerned about your phone or sim getting lock..you can just use galaxy tools apk v3.1.5 & then upgrade the apk to v3.1.8 & it will unlocked it for you... but i doubt it will lock you down... maybe you can just try to back your rom completely & restore if any issues encounter
it's dependent on the way that they unlocked the phone, someone in vietnam has been locked after updated the phone, but my phone was not.

And I have no idea how my phone was unlocked, I just bought it like this. I can see the Sprint phone number on Samsung Kies maybe I should write an email to Sprint asking them to unlock it using that Sprint phone number?
