Hi All,
I have an M8 which is on stock carrier firmware but rooted and twrp installed.
Got a notification of an OTA update.
I installed the stock bootloader and re-locked it but the firmware update still 'red tirangles' about halfway through.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance all.
I'm on an Australian Telstra brand phone with FW 1.12.841.17 and the OTA is for 1.54.841.8
You need to have the stock recovery. I was able to get my OTA being rooted and unlocked, I had to have the stock recovery for it to work.
Oh dear. I meant I have the stock recovery. Sorry. Just came off night shift and got the 2 mixed up.
So yeah, reinstalled stock recovery and no good. Firmware update progress bar gets about halfway before going to the red triangle.

I would try extracting the firmware.zip from the ota zip and flashing the firmware.zip entirely.
to flash the firmware.zip
boot to fastboot
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
wait until done
again
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
fastboot reboot
then try flashing the ota again.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think its possible to downgrade. You can only reinstall the same version or upgrade.
EDIT: Also, you only need to flash the stock recovery and relock the bootloader. No need to flash stock boot.img

So stock recovery isn't part of the RUU?

Not as far as I know, if you haven't got stock recovery the ruu will fail
EDIT: I must of been having a blonde moment , stock recovery will be part of the ruu but the ruu checks you have a version of stock recovery before updating. If it doesn't find it, it will fail

-Extract the rom.zip from RUU of your CID (google how extract ruu.exe)
- fastboot oem readcid (to know your CID)
-Extract boot.img, signed_recovery.img from rom.zip
then
- fastboot flash recovery signed_recovery.img
- fastboot flash boot boot.img
- fastboot oem lock
Run the RUU exe file (of your CID) in fastboot mode

Yes that picture is correct , if the ruu runned successful then you are completely stock. Its a warning sign that you are about to enter the recovery, push volume up and power button and you enter the recovery.
In order to flash anything to the phone you must have a unlocked bootloader
But why did you open a new thread for this, as you posted it already in the original thread you opened and also got the answer there

You have to have the stock recovery installed to accept an OTA update

Thank you for your answer. Now another question: how can i go back to stock recovery? Thank you!

They are specific to your software build. What are you on at the moment?
You can download the ota without stock recovery. Then just extract the recovery from the firmware.zip which is in the ota zip file. It saves to downloads folder when you download it.
Then flash it. Then apply the ota.

I was try to take my phone to as close to stock as possible but didn't have a stock recovery. I was trying to get s-off through sunshine but when i tried to go back to stock i downloaded an ing file from here and installed it using flashify and i am assuming it was the wrong one. Now all i get is the red triangle on start up. How do I flash a recovery using a mac or could some one direct me to a video?
forgot
also i was rooted and unlocked if that makes a difference. I was using twrp and viper one rom.
Get fastboot and adb. Download newest twrp img file. Boot to bootloader and click fastboot. Load terminal on Mac and navigate to directory with fastboot and img.
Fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Pm me if you need more help.
