No you dont need root to install custom roms, you need a custom recovery. And yes, most custom roms will give you root access (unless otherwise specified).

What version of CWM you using ?
Do you use AmonRA- or Clockworkmod-Recovery? Which Hardwarevision does your Desire have ? If u have PVT4, you have use AmonRA and with this recovery-system you cannot use ROM Manager. You have to do all your flash, wipe, etc.- operations directly in recovery.

Try to flash directly in recovery.
Hello all,
I'm asking for you help about my dead (almost) HTC ONE X that I got 1 month ago...
I tried to flash a new custom ROM on it and everything went fine for rooting and stuff...
The ROM that I was supposed to flash needed a boot.img to be flashed first, which I did but I forgot to put the ZIP containing the custom ROM in my sdcard. Now, when I reboot my phone, it freezes on the HTC logo and can't go on.
I still can get it connected via adb and recovery.
I restored my backup but it doesn't change a thing to make it work.
I tried a hard factory reset
I pushed the zip file that I was supposed to flash, but when I try to flash it from recovery, it can't be found!!!
I don't know what else to do, I need help......please and thank you in andvance !
Go to recovery, mounts and storage, then mount usb storage. With your usb-cable connected you sould be able to copy over your ROM to sd-card and flash normally.

Alright stay cool, your phone isn't bricked. Download this: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img. and flash in fastboot. Go to fastboot> fastboot flash recovery [the file.img] After that try mounting again and it should work.

I can highly recommend CM10 provided that you can live without sense. Really smooth and fully functional.
And remember to flash the boot.img from CM10 if you decide to install it.

I've never tried skydragon ROM and still think you should flash CyanogenMod 10. It is totally safe for everyday use. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786696
And one more thing: flashing skydragon requires updating hboot which might be too tricky and has its own disadvantages so not recommending that.

Some roms are more minimal with just the basic apps, whereas some are nearer to the official HTC roms, with Sense etc.
Make sure that you have the correct firmware HBoot for any particular rom. By the sounds of it, you can't currently install the JellyBean custom roms (bar CM10) with the Hboot you have.

Hi i am noob as you see with my stupid question. Can i flash CWM by using Haseen2000's One V All-In-One kit, should it be safe, i use GSM version. If something goes wrong, can i flash TWRP, or should i use simply TWRP included with it?
Can i just root my phone by unlocking bootloader, then flashing recovery and then do "Perm-Root" command, should that be fine
better to flash twrp

Ok, so should i be fine with this:
1. Unlock the bootloader (got the unlock_code.bin from HTCDev)
2. Flash TWRP
3. Perm-Root option
Should my phone then be rooted, or do i need to do something else?
I am bit worried just because this is my first Android phone and i am not fully familiar with those things, but i want to do it.
Can there be problems with this?

Rooting will give access to the system files of your android and grant u administrative access over your device, whether u stay on stock or install a custom ROM.

The kernel must be compatible with the ROM. Usually, Sense version and Android version need to match.

I'm sorry, is it actually possible to flash a kernel with unlocked bootloader and s-on? Before I s-offed, I could not flash New kernel via recovery, is there a way to do it other than via recovery?
Edit: I suppose if the new kernel was in boot.IMG format, then you could flash it in fastboot.

yes The Kernel In the .zip format can be flashed in two steps.
First Flash The Zip File In Recovery
Then Flash Boot.img via Fastboot, fastboot flash boot boot.img

I think the whole point of this thread was the op wants to try different kernel with existing Rom on the phone using a kernel.zip .
My original answer was if your s-on you can't flash a new kernel.
What I didn't however include is you can't do it via recovery, using a downloaded kernel.zip which was my mistake. But I would have thought that was obvious, because that was the original question.

But...what does flashing the zip do that flashing the image doesn't? Am I missing something?

According to me,The Flash Zip is required to place the files in the system directories...
It would be the same reason you have to flash the boot.IMG manually after flashing a Rom from recovery (cwm, 4ext etc) because it doesn't get flashed to the boot, same reason kernel doesn't flash via recovery. HTC unlock but still s-on doesn't allow you to mess with kernel directly or via recovery except using fastboot.
Atleast that's my understanding.
May I also add my own personal experience, I went straight to htcdev to unlock my phone, my experience with my HTC legend gave me the knowledge to do it without issue except the boot.img which through me a little. Long story short after flashing Rom and boot.img I wanted to try new kernel but it wouldn't work then I used google and found out via a different forum site the reason, which is HTC'S official unlock does not allow access to kernel with s-on....
