Hi everyone!
My friend has a Sprint Galaxy Note II that's stuck on the Samsung logo and I have no idea how to fix it. They had been having weird problems with it for a while before this started. For instance, it would start working in "slow motion", It would run out of storage space very quickly, and for a couple of days before this happened my friend was having a hard time getting it to charge (the light wouldn't even come on.). Now, whenever they plug it in, it shows the battery icon but... It's sort of stuck. It has the loading icon on the battery, but it doesn't go around and around like it should. They tried pulling the battery out and then turning it back on, but it just shows the Samsung logo. The logo doesn't do that blue glowing thing either. They have VERY IMPORTANT information on it, so doing a factory reset isn't an option. It is NOT ROOTED. it has never been rooted or modified in any way. I had to confiscate it so they wouldn't break it out of frustration, so it's in my possession now. As I said, WIPING IT ISN'T AN OPTION. Can you please help me fix it?
Thanks in advance!

I would suggest trying to get it to boot into download mode. While powered off press and hold vol -, home key, and power. If it goes into download flash a custom recovery (twrp suggested) and use file manager to copy important information to an external sdcard.

Try a different charger/usb cord and if that don't work maybe it's time for a new battery as that one sounds like it might be no good and completely dead.

Thanks jlmancuso! I feel like I should know this already, but I won't lose any files in the process of rooting, will I? I've only rooted one phone before and it was my S4. I rooted it straight out of the box, so I didn't have any files on it. It's very important that I don't lose the files on my friend's phone. Do you (or anyone else here) know of a way to get the files off without rooting it? Or a way to get it working again without losing the important files?
Thanks!

Well actually if you follow the steps i gave you then you are not actually rooting only installing a recovery. This will not cause you to lose any info and will aid you later to get the phone running again.

Well here are the basics
Using a windows pc with samsung drivers installed along with odin. Boot phone into download mode and connect to pc. Open odin and uncheck the reboot option. Click the pda button and select the twrp recovery file i linked. Once it flashes (should only take a moment) disconnect the phone and remove battery. No insert and remove battery several times very quickly. This prevents the phone from automatically booting. Now boot into recovery mode and use the built-in file manager to copy important data from internal sdcard to an external card.
Volume down + home button + power button = download mode
Volume up + home button + power button = recovery mode
Make sure you hold all three keys till you see the bootscreen
Twrp link.... http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/t0ltespr/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.7-t0ltespr.img.tar
Now have linked you to twrp because it has a built-in file manager but if you want to install aosp 4.4 custom roms or backup/restore stock 4.3 roms then you will want to use philz 6.07.9

Sorry it took me so long. The phone will boot into both recovery and download mode. We spoke to someone at our local Sprint store who was able to determine that the problem is not being caused by the battery, the charging port, or any other hardware. He told us that we have two options: we can either flash the custom recovery, or he can try to flash it back to the official software, which isn't supposed to wipe it. My friend has been without a phone for a long time, but they aren't sure what to do. They really don't want to lose any data because there are pictures and text messages that are needed for a legal issue. Can you help us figure this out? Thanks again!

Well now you talked with Sprint let me fill you in on something. Sprint techs know very little. If you let them re-flash it then you will lose the data.
As I stated earlier flash twrp recovery and use its file manager to move things from your internal sdcard to an external sdcard.

Ok I will double check the location of the file. Couple of questions first. What os was installed stock? 4.1.2, 4.3, or 4.4.2? Second are there mms messages that you need? Last what os is on your pc? This way I can gather up links to the needed software.

Okay first off here is a list of things you will need.
1. twrp recovery http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/t0ltespr/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.7-t0ltespr.img.tar
2. odin 1.85 http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...6_0obQ6fr_QnBsA&bvm=bv.68693194,d.aWw&cad=rja
3. samsung usb drivers http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...NG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.33.0.exe
4. sdcard (anything over 1 GB will be fine) inserted in phone
Now steps to perform
1. On your pc install odin and then samsung drivers
2. Place the twrp-xxxx.tar file into the odin folder
3. Boot phone into download mode -- with power off press and hold vol -, home key, and Power
4. It will boot and ask you to press vol + to continue
5. Open the odin program and uncheck auto reboot
6. Click on the button that says PDA and then select the TWRP file
7. Connect phone to PC
8. Click on start and it will flash the recovery
9. After it says done disconnect phone from pc and remove battery
10. Now with battery out press and hold vol +, home key, and power
11. It should boot into TWRP
12. Go to mounts and mount /data and /system if they are not already mounted
13. Back to main menu and choose Advanced...File Manager
14. Select data ... data ... com.android.providers.telephony ... databases
15. Now copy mmssms.db, mmssms.db-shm, mmssms.db-wal to sdcard (press on the file ... Copy file ... external_sdcard)
16. Once all the files are copied press the (Up A Level) till you are back to the root
17. Select system then build.prop Copy to external_sdcard
Now you have all the important sms/mms files and you can power off your phone. Remove the sdcard and copy (dont move) those files to your PC.
Now you have a couple of choices. You can extract the database files and try and use them in court or you can fix the phone and place the database files back where they came from.
If you plan on putting the files back on the phone (suggested method) then you will need to open the build.prop with a text editor (wordpad is fine). Then look through it for the version you were running. Below is part of a build.prop the two red lines are what you want to know. This will tell me what the original rom was so I can get you a link and instructions on how to flash it.
ro.build.id=KOT49H
ro.build.display.id=Community Rom
ro.build.version.incremental=Beta 2
ro.build.version.sdk=19
ro.build.version.codename=REL
ro.build.version.release=4.4.2
ro.build.date=Thu May 8 00:01:36 KST 2014
ro.build.date.utc=1399474896
ro.build.type=user
ro.build.user=dpi
ro.build.host=SWDD5716
ro.build.tags=release-keys
ro.product.model=SPH-L900
ro.product.brand=samsung
ro.product.name=t0ltespr
ro.product.device=t0ltespr
If you plan on just extracting the files let me know and I will get you links and info on how to do that.
If you have any questions about the steps or problems performing any step just let me know (dont skip any step) and I will help you.
Thank you SO much! :thumbup:

so i odined the stock kernel onto my et4g and everything went fine until it rebooted my launcher is nonexistent the home menu and search buttons dont work when the phone first started up it said set up wizard force closed so anyone know what i should do at this point im currently dl the cwm recovery back up.
just tried to boot into odin mode and it said E:Update logfile dose not exist
From what I understand, unless you've wiped out your radios you should be okay. I had a similar thing happen to me, and corrected it in this manner.
You'll need a CWM recovery tar (I use Chris41g's LoStKernel)
An SD card
A flashable ROM (I use AbsolutZeroGI's EG30-Stock-OdexV2.zip)
Put the ROM on the SD card, with the phone unplugged pull the battery, replace and boot into Odin mode (volume down and power, then volume up at first screen).
Open Odin, select PDA then the tar file, make sure auto reboot is checked and run it.
Once the phone reboots pull the battery and go into recovery (volume up and power) wipe everything then flash the ROM. When it reboots you should be ok.
Conversely, you could look for crawrj's stock Odin Rom with recovery, busy box, and SU, (which you would also run from PDA), but the steps above are what I used.
i cant boot into odin mode :/
Oh, sorry about that, do you know anyone with a USB jig, I don't know for sure, but that may help determine if it is a hardware problem?

Hi guys,
I'm a bit new to the galaxy S3, I'm not too familiar with most things. I rooted my phone a few weeks ago with ODIN. This was to try to get the Google Wallet to work. After numerous attempts, i gave up, and figured i would unroot my phone because of guarantee reasons. Today i went into recovery mode to wipe cache and davlik, then upon reboot, the phone stopped working. I would get the vibration, the Samsung logo, then the Galaxy S3 logo, but that's as far as it goes. I can also go back into recovery mode, and probably download mode.
I just downloaded TriangleAway to reset my flash counter, but that wasnt compatible with my phone. I also got mobile Odin, same result. I have the Videotron Galaxy S3 SGH-T999V. The only changes i have made were of the build.prop, which I have restored to its original state, though the phone still thinks its a Galaxy Nexus.
Any ideas of what i could do? I wouldn't mind wiping all my data and going back to how it was when i first bought it without the root.
Thanks guys
Forgive me if i am not in the proper section

I've heard about thus happening to phones without a stock rom, but not just rooting. You could try using Odin to flash a boot loader, kernel and rom. That should unbrick the phone. There are lengthy directions on xda for that. Let us know what happens, and good luck!

Thanks a lot. So after i get the latest firmware, do I use it through recovery mode? or do I unzip the file and use the tar file inside with ODIN?
Also are these the only steps to do and that should work?

Unzip and flash the .tar.md5 file with Odin. This will rewrite your system and other partitions.
After rebooting it can take a few minutes at the Samsung logo so just let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
If it gets to be much longer than that, hold power till it reboots and as soon as the screen goes off let go of power for a moment and immediately press and hold power, volume up and home. Then release when you see the blue text flash at the top of the screen. This should get you to recovery. Wipe cache, dalvik and factory reset then reboot again.
No guarantees itll fix your problem of course but this will give you a fresh, full stock system. So hopefully it does fix uou up.

Go to Play Store and try acquiring Titanium Backup. It can only be used if the user is rooted. Try using it and if it doesn't correspond then you're not rooted. If it does then you're still rooted. I also believe if you don't have Superuser or SuperSU on your phone, then you're not rooted since those two are the "gateway" between apps and system.
Dont worry. Youre not rooted anymore. Flashing that fw in odin rewrites the system and other partitions to be just like it would come out of the box. If you're still concerned about it look for the file "su" in /system/bin and /system/xbin. If its not there youre not rooted.

Hello XDA,
I am trying to root my new GT-N7100. I have had previous experience with Galaxy S3 and custom roms but with windows. I am trying to root my Note 2 with a mac book pro (heimdall method). I have followed every step carefully and dont seem to go anywhere. I followed steps from this link:
galaxynote2.com
The problem :
After I follow the last step (8 - Pressing UP+HOME+POWER), All I get is the Note 2 splash screen flashing as if there is a graphical glitch. The entire stuff just glitches up and down for a few times like a old TV and eventually the phone goes off, but the haptic feedback is active when I touch the keys besides home button so i am guessing the CWM recovery is working but just that there is nothing to see. Not sure what to do, any help is gladly appreciated.
Oh and another problem is that I get horrible static during any VOIP calls like Skype or Viber. Does anyone know whats the problem?
TIA,

Use windows only if you are new to android. Try using a friend's, neighbor's, cyber cafe computer. Heimdall needs experience. Or use virtual machine to install Windows trial like windows 8 enterprise evaluation

You're overcomplicating things. You don't need a Mac or a Windows machine, or ODIN or Heimdall to root your Note II. You don't even need a PC at all. All you need is Exynos Abuse.
Just make sure your handset is in good, working order, (i.e. - No bugs or goofy crap leftover from the failed rooting attempts.) and root using the Exynos Abuse *.apk from Chainfire. Just enable "Unknown Sources" in Settings > Security, and install the *.apk. Once it's installed, open it up and just click to root. It's that easy. All the relevant information, as well as the *.apk, is in the thread linked below.

It looks like you may need to ODIN-flash back to stock. If you can get on a Windows machine, flash back to stock and then reroot. Once you do that, you can install your preferred custom recovery using MobileODIN. That should take care of you.

I sure will try that, but just a few questions.. Is unrooting not possible using a mac? If I use a windows machine, Do I need to download the original stock firmware from samsung-updates.com to begin with?
Will report back if I have any more issues.
TIA

Alternatively u may buy mobileodin pro from play store and flash recovery cwm from there. I no longer need to use my pc since. Unless i mess up my partition. Lol enjoy.

That's assuming his recovery is the only thing ****ed up. MobileODIN is great; but it is entirely dependant on a fully functional device. If your device is having issues, using MobileODIN is just an unnecessary risk.

Hello again,
I am back with a bad news unfortunately. After I unrooted and wiped the entire phone to default Official Samsung rom using a windows 7 system (ODIN method). It successfully passed and I even got the stock recovery. But after i rooted it using ODIN with the latest CWM recovery, the same issue occurred. I am really disappointed with the way this phones acting, any help is greatly appreciated!
TIA

What official rom ur on? What version of odin ur using? Can u try root via exynos abuse apk rather than odin? Is unknown sources and usb debugging selected? Can u flash philz touch 3.81 cwm? Try doing the recovery flash via mobile odin.

I used Odin v3 1.85, I dont really remember if unknown source or Debugging mode was on when I rerooted the phone. I will have to unroot the phone all over again to try the ExynosAbuse apk.

Hello again,
Its the same issue once again
ExynosAbuse.apk did not help. Everything looks perfectly normal when i go through the rooting process but the moment i try to enter the recovery the screen jumps across and sometimes shows the GT-N7100 splash screen halfway and the phone just goes blank. I have to press and hold the power button a couple of times for the phone to restart.
TIA

My friend just recently bought himself an SIII and we were going to switch him to ST. His phone has some issues however. Apparently the guy he bought it off of showed him it worked fine. The wi-fi and everything worked. But now we try messing with it and every time we try to open up settings menu "unfortunately TouchWiz home has stopped working".
Not only that. We can not move apps/widgets nore turn on wifi.
Running 4.1.1
Was suggested firmware reset.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

A factory reset or firmware reset might be your solution here. Backup your stuff first though.
Root and use odin to recover to a Rom

There's no need to root to use Odin.
Factory reset was tried already. Suggestions on how to firmware reset?
Backing up the system seems pointless seeing as he has nothing on the phone from just having bought it, unless there are other reasons for backing up I don't know about.

if factory reset doesn't work, try Odin and flash Stock Rom?
make sure you backup and save it on your Computer first though(if you're rooted)

here's a link to the stock firmware page. locate the correct carrier and download the version you wish. my wife's phone is running the "DLK3" version (jelly bean). the instructions are on the page. after downloading the files, installing the samsung drivers, and installing odin, i would:
1. boot into recovery (press home + vol up + pwr together. let go of the power button when the phone vibrates and displays blue text in the top left corner)
2. wipe data
3. wipe cache
4. reboot and power down
5. place phone into download mode (home + vol dwn + power). you should see a warning asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, press volume up.
6. connect phone to computer via usb and open odin
7. your ROM is a single .tar.md5 package so click on the PDA button and browse to the .tar or .tar.md5 file that you extracted
8. click start to flash. If odin hangs at setting up connection just unplug the USB cable and re-attach it, Odin should now resume
9. do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device once the flash has started, it will reboot when it finishes.
10. power down and boot into recovery again and wipe data and cache again. reboot and you're reset and good to go.

Excellent. That bit of info seems perfect. Will attempt this tomorrow when access to computer is present.
Any further information is appreciated.

Find the one for you're friend, and download it. This will root you're phone and will not void you're warranty, and you're device will not show up as modified. This is the safest way to root you're phone and since this is a firmware it will replace you're old firmware. If flashing this doesn't work, then just wipe you're data. If none of these work then it's an application you're friend has downloaded, some of them could do that.

Odion Back to the stock rom!
Can you boot into recovery?
Take battery out of phone then put it back in. At the same time hold the volume up button, home button and the power button, you should feel the phone vibrate and small blue text appear in the upper left side of the screen, let go of all buttons.
Tell me what appears, black background with blue text or grey background with blue text.

I would Odin the stock or root66 just to be safe. We have no clue what was actually done to the phone, so flashing back to stock is really the only way to avoid more potential problems.

I'm having a similar problem. I keep trying to odin back to stock but when its done and I restart it gets stuck on the Samsung logo. My lcd is also broken so the only way I can see what i'm doing is through mhl, making things are much harder to do
You'll have to factory reset. If you can't see the screen, boot to recovery and use adb shell to wipe the /data partition.
Unless someone else has a better idea.
