[Q] root access - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok guys am no noob too rooting android phones but are there any scripts or apps that have been tried and tested on the m8 that have the possibility to either temp root a phone or that can remove root when root access is not needed the reason am asking is because i have a contract m8 which means if my phone is rooted and i go to get warranty or insurance claim i will be denied this due too rooting affects the warranty of the phone

There is a temproot method, but inks works with Verizon...second you can always unroot the phone or better the Rom u use...but you have to unlock boot loader...some devices can get s-off with Firewater...if you really now what Firewater etc are just search in Google for Firewater HTC one m8..if you don't know about s-off etc please read a few guides so you can be sure to do all right...also if you s-offed your phone you will be able to remove the unlocked boot loader and set it to locked....so if you have to send it back they won't notice any things related to rooting if you doesnt made some mistakes

Unlocked bootloader

With the G2 now officially on the list of devices for this, is this basically the same as root. If not are there roms with root built in? Thanks in advance.

Nope, unlocked bootloader and root are not the same. Unlocking the bootloader does not automatically give you root. But its easy to root after you unlock the bootloader. Please not that you also void your warranty by using HTC Unlock.
Every ROM in the Development subforum is pre-rooted. But you must be rooted to install them.
It seems its more complicated to gain root after HTC Unlock then I thought: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453066
Can't vouch for this process, or HTC Unlock in general. But there are so many steps even with HTC Unlock, and you still need ADB, so I don't see the point. Just use the Wiki method and keep your warranty.
Also Nipqer states in the thread linked above:
The drawbacks to using htcdev is that htc have a record that you have voided your warranty, and the device is still quite locked down.
The downgrade/gfree method will give you a completely unlocked phone, which is a lot easier to fix if anything goes wrong, and you can restore your phone to stock, so that htc cannot see you voided your warranty.
Also, gfree provides sim-unlock, which htcdev does not.
Another thing, I don't think that HTC is going to support you if you try to use HTC Unlock, and something goes wrong. Where if you go the Wiki/gfree method and have issues, people on XDA will help you.
Moral of the story, I don't see why anyone would go the HTC Unlock method. And that goes for any HTC device, where other root/S-Off methods already exist. The main usage or HTC Unlock (for us folks on here anyway) is for newer phones where S-Off and root have not yet been achieved.

[Q] help to root my wildfire s

Hi their all, im struggling to, root my mobile.
I did a root ages ago and i got a popup notification saying ROOTED in red letters, so i thought my mobile was rooted.
Anyway, i recently bought and recieved an XTC clip, which i bought to make my mobile s-off and unlock it
I thought this also rooted the devide which i dont think they do unless im missing things.
anyway, i downloaded the root check basic, and it says:
sorry, this device does not have proper root access
can anybody help, i know my device is s-off now
XTC Clip will S-OFF your device, which basically means you have full write access to all the partitions (boot, system, radio, recovery etc).
But as you have discovered, it doesn't root your device for you. Rooting is a separate step which gives you access to the "root" user (aka superuser/administrator).
All you need to do now is to use one of the rooting methods, and that will give you permanent (i.e. it stays after a reboot) root. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18897122 for how to do it.
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
I used the advice in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1432074
but found I had to download Superuser and BusyBox from the market and reboot the phone before it worked.
Good luck

Temproot? anyone looking into this?

Hi All,

The rooting of the M8

Hello all,
I have some questions about rooting my phone, the HTC One M8. If someone gets a new phone like this one, backs it up after initial setup, roots and does s-off, and then does a second backup (optional).......... is there any reason why that person should need to worry about anything going wrong? I'm replacing my phone and want to know that as long as I back it up before rooting and s-off, I should never have to worry, right?
Also, once you root a phone, you can still get new OTAs right? The rooting doesn't stop that, right? Just a simple yes or no is fine.
Kindly please answer both. I appreciate all those who can shed some light! It seems that rooting is ok as long as you do it (and S-OFF) BEFORE receiving any OTAs, or that's what I think.
Thank You,

part of rooting is a custom recovery which can block ota's from installing. sometimes the updates can manually be flashed or you can just revert to a stock recovery temporarily but changes to your system can also block the install. as far as the backups it's what ever your comfortable with - I never bother with backups of the stock software and I've never needed one.

Ok thank Lampel!

I have questions pertaining to Rooting the HTC One M8 aswell.
I moved from Samsung's Galaxy line of phones and have always Rooted without hesitation. Reasons being, I have become comfortable with the way they work and am confident I can return it to Stock (no modded counters on it or whatever), if I need to bring it back to my carrier for some reason.
Now I just got my M8, and definitely want to Root it, but all the new terms for HTC phones confuse me a little. Things I need to know before going forward with Rooting are:
1) What is "S-Off"/'S-On"? And what does it mean?
2) If I Root, can I bring it back to Stock where it will look like I did nothing to it so I can return to the store if I need to?
3) I know there are risks when Rooting, but are there things that become "broken" or don't work because of Rooting? Examples would be like Sony's Xperia devices, the Bravia Engine stops working, and so does the Camera (for some models). Those things become "broken" as a security feature for Sony. Did HTC do anything similar?
4) Anything else you might think I need to know before Rooting?
Thanks in advance!

I'm not 100% certain on the other questions but maybe I can help with your first question.
Security-ON / Security-OFF. These settings seem specific to HTC. When you purchase a new phone, it will be S-On. This basically means that there are specific areas of your phone that you won't be able to touch, even with root access. However, you can alter the system, boot, and recovery partitions with root access and S-On. S-Off will allow access to the radio and other partitions that you won't be able to access with S-On. S-Off also allows you to change the splash screen. You can check your S-on/S-off status by booting into fastboot (power off phone, press volume down and power until you see the white fastboot screen).
It is my understanding that in order to get S-Off on newer HTC One M8's, Sunshine (http://theroot.ninja/) can be used but it does cost $25. The htcdev.com site has more information on S-On/S-Off along with warnings of why you may not want to go with S-Off here: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/about_unlock_process.

thanks for your reply, took a day or two after i posted to grab the concept of S-Off/S-On. I'm used to Samsung devices where all you needed was root, and you can do anything.

root without breaking warranty

Can anyone point in the right direction in rooting the m8 without breaking the warranty or unlocking the bootloader?
Rooting without breaking warranty is what we all dream off. Want to bring the phone back to 100% stock you need s-off so you can return bootloader tampered flags back to normal.
S-off is only available via sunshine !
ok have learnt basiclaly sunshine need to be done to unlock the bootloader. However sunshine needs root access to work and it says come here to find out how to get root access. I personally dont care for soff all i want it root.
What are the methods to gain root. Dont care about soff.
is htcdev method the only way? As htc would have a permanent record you have requested your code. Doesnt seem like a great idea imo. Are there any other methods to gain root?
Can this device be rooted without unlocking the bootloader?
Nope, thats the only way.

Bugger all about rooting. So it would seem it shouldn't break the warranty, or am i missing something?

For previous OS version, there was an option in sunshine to temp root, s-off, and unlock the bootloader. And from there you can install custom recovery and perm root.
But no such temp root exploit has been found for newer (Lollipop) OS versions, unfortunately.
I really hate the idea of having to unlock the bootloader just to root and also giving your imei to htc. The HTC looks like a complete ball ache to get back to stock also.
