Hi after all the google bs that we get these days I am really thinking of rooting my Samsung Galaxy S4 for T-Mobile.
Firstly:
What is the easiest way ? Do I have to run it through Odin ?
Secondly:
Which Custom Rom would you guys recommend for Galaxy S4 T-Mobile ?
I have read and researched a little when it comes to potential answers but I just wanted to obtain an expert advice. And I know it's a right place.
Please help any advice will greatly appreciated.
And "step by step instructions" to both topics would just make my day. Thanks in advance. Loyal follower.
Chainfire's autoroot gets the job done. There is also saferoot.
Insane Kit Kat is my ROM recommendation.

I can't seem to find Insane Kit Kat as a ROM anywhere. I was thinking about cyanogen, wanamlite maybe.
Important:
Also can you let me know if once I root my phone I will be able to make my SD card changes ? For Example using SD fix app to save media on it ?
@Danvdh 's 4.4.2 Kitkat GPE is great. check my sig for details. I've used it as DD since I installed it, and have had no issues.
It is very barebones, but I (personally) used to love the look of TW, then I had a Moto, and Blur is very much stock Android UI, and tho it's not as "pretty" at first, it's very user friendly and direct. And with the add'l installs (Xposed & GBox), there's nothing I can't change if I want.
Cheers,

Thanks for the info. But do you think that after just rooting my phone I would have the full access to move any media to SD CARD ? No custom ROM. Just original stock.

Rooting won't change access for anything that doesn't use root. Once rooted, check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2684188 for the SD fix (app also available on Google Play). This is not needed on most custom ROMs.

XDA does not permit "Best rom" or "best anything else" threads. All these do is end up devolving into an argument between various rom supporters who all think theirs is the best.
On XDA you are expected to do your own research. Read the ROM threads, learn which have the features you like. Try a few out and determine which is the best for YOU. ONly YOU can decide what the best rom is FOR YOU.
There is not definitive BEST answer. The perfect ROM for you might be the worst possible option for me. It all depends on use and personal preferences.
^^^This. Also questions belong in the Q&A section not in General.
Moved and closed.
Have a great day!

You now have the option of installing a custom recovery and running one of numerous Roms for your phone. Just be sure what you choose is for your model.

Before you make any changes or utilize any of tweaks/mods out there....read,read and read again - what it is, how to install it, what it does and how to use it.

There are many apps, system themes, tools and tweaks you can't use unless rooted.
I know Android is highly customizable out of the box, but rooting opens the door and gives you even more control of your device.
Certain apps such a Vibrafix (haptic feedback disabler), AdAway(amazing ad blocker app that uses the same hosts file I have used on my PC for years), Inverted Gapps, and loads of great system maintenance tools that require root, etc, etc.
Welcome to the lovely world of root. I mainly root my phones to out new ROMS on. But they become to damn addictive so be careful lol. Now I just use root to take off all bloatware and ads custom kernels.... Have fun and yes read read read and read again. Before trying anything

Keep back-up of a good, working, configuration, and stick with your S3 variant. The same goes for flashing flashable zips - stick to the ROM you've chosen to flash (obviously this can vary with mods for any AOSP ROM, etc.).
General rule of thumb. I just rooted and flashed Slim Bean on my girlfriends S3, so I'm new to the S3 community too. Hoping I can find a solid AOSP build to flash on her phone.
Thread moved to Q&A.
@ OP, Do you see a general sense of the responses you're are getting? Reading, Reading, Reading is key. All of your questions are fundamental Android questions. You need to look into recoveries, root apps, different ROMs/Kernels - all of which can be found with a simple XDA or Google Search.
And please do not open and thread about, "Which ROM is the best?" or "What is your favorite ROM/Kernel combo?". Best advice I can give is to read a few OPs in the Dev section and if you find one that you like, check out the last 10 pages or so for bugs. Narrow it down to one that you want, then start reading.

Bingo.
Like yourself, I am new to the rom flashing scene. Once I get my phone set up exactly how I want it, I do a Nandroid.
After that, I do a standard backup at least ocne a week of my apps and their data.
Alot of backup apps will provide the ability to merge backups. This is a great feature because I could uninstall an app today that I like for some reason, and a few days from here when I do my next app backup, instead of having to reinstall it before the backup, it's already carried forward in the merged backup.
Just do your research before you flash ANYTHING!!!!!!. Any terms that you dont understand, just google. This is an awesome site, almost everything is already covered. Welcome to the darkside......or something.
I tried to install latest illusion and liquid JB 2.4 but dont like them, internet doesnt work on liquid jb and there is also no market app on either one, not sure if its the ROMS or my installation.
Now can any one plese help me to find the rom that has best features (good bettery life could be a bonus).
thanks in advance.
Your install process is way off. There are support threads and q&a's and instructions in the OP of the thread... No such thing as a "coolest rom" try them for your self with proper install procedures before saying they're ugly or don't work.
T-Mobile SGS III
Coolest ROM?
That made me laugh.
You need to go through and pick which ROM or ROMs fit your needs. No one can pick a ROM for you, another members ideal ROM may not be your ideal ROM.
As for the installation process and having certain apps not being there or not working properly, you need to read the first post of the thread, also know as the OP. Reading it will let you know what to download and how to install/flash it through recovery.
Here's some advice that will save you in the future:
-read the first post/op of each thread
-have questions or problems with the ROM? Read the first and last 10 pages of the thread, if the problem isn't addressed or your question isn't answered, then politely ask for help.
-Google is your "friend", usually typing your issue followed by xda in the search bar and you'll find what your looking for

Downloaded odin and rooted and installed cwm through GalaxyS3RootUSCanada.zip (http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-r...gh-t999sgh-i747sph-l710-fail-proofnoob-proof/)
Downloaded the Rom and installed it --> cleared cache etc.
Now is there a problem with installing CWM throuth this file?

Maybe you should read the op before installing something.
Clearly says you have to flash gapps after flashing liquidsmooth. This is why you don't have the playstore.

Agree here. Never understood why folks would go to that site, then come here to find support for it.
Either root66 or cf-autoroot is the best and easiest imo.

Beats me but I won't give support for things sourced outside of XDA. Not just because XDA always has the best but because I know nothing about external offerings.

Khanbaba59, there is no "cool rom" so to speak. You have to read up on which is best for you, then try them. Be sure to READ the OP on installation process to avoid anything going wrong.
As your questions have been answered, I will close this now as it will cause confusion and bickering about roms.
Hi Everyone,
As the title says I am a noob to rooting and have been researching the various roots, kernels, roms and add on packs, and some answers on what would be the best package for my phone to accomplish the results of what I would like to do,
My Phone Specs:
Samsung Galaxy SII
SGH-T989 (T-Mobile)
4.1.2 (Android Version)
3.0.31-1003885 (Kernel Version)
What I would like to accomplish is remove a bunch of bloatware that came with phone (mainly all of the T-Mobile bloat)...and I would like to connect my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet to the phone and be able to use the phones data connection as a wifi connection via usb tethering.
There it is, let the feast begin...
Thxs in advance for all the answers and comments

This link will help you how to root. Before you click on it and follow the steps, when you get to step 13, skip to step 18, and then go back to step 14, but skip 18 this time around. This makes a nandroid backup of your ROM (Recovery Menu > Backup).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195283
After you've rooted, download "Root Browser" or something similar to that from the Play Store.
After starting Root Browser up, browse to system/app. Then there will be a load of apps there. Simply click on it and select uninstall.
Be sure to know what you're uninstalling. If you mess up, just restore from the backup you made earlier in recovery.
As for your second option, I'm not sure how to help you with that, sorry!
Good luck!
EDIT: I found a person you had a problem while he was rooting. This thread will take you there and show you he solution as well

CyanogenMOD is probably still the biggest, and if you're new to custom ROMS and rooting, it helps to be able to Google for answers. I see Jedi around a bunch here too, so you'd probably be okay getting help here, but I don't know much about it (I stick with CM). The latest out is CM 10.1 (which is Android 4.2.2).
Another step (once you get confident with using the various ROM/rooting tools) to fine-tuning your phone is updating your radio, and there's an excellent thread with the radios listed for the T989 here.

Yup he's right CM is the biggest in custom ROMs but you can start off with the ROMs based on stock like Jedi, Infamous, & Northern Touch, etc.
Then after you become comfortable with flashing you can move onto AOSP ROMs.

It's not any more complicated. Don't worry about odex and stuff. Just stay in the development threads here and flash what you like. Not trying to be mean here but these types of threads are not necessary. Just make a nandroid and flash away and see what best fits your needs. Each rom is subject to opinion. I use slimfast and have had no issues with it.

I keep asking questions, and you give me other replies rather than answers... If might be straightforward and easy for you. and maybe screwing around with a $350 phone is no issue for you.. but me.. not so much.
"In theory you should be fine if you do dirty flash from another 4.3 rom such as DN3 v1.0 or SN10
We recommend TWRP 2.6.3.1 to flash this rom.
You need 4.3 boot loader.
Have both TWRP and latest CWM on your external SD Card along with Ditto Note 3.1.1
Flash TWRP 2.6.3.1, go into Wipe and slide to do the Factory Reset."
This is not straight forward to me.. since I have no idea if I have a 4.3 bootloader - says I HAVE TO HAVE ONE.
TWRP is at 2.7 now .. is there a reason he says to use 2.6.3.1??? on a rom that was updated 3 days ago??
These are the things that bother me.. I am not interested in bricking my phone.
If you dont want to help.. fine, But explanations for the terms used above are not coming up in searches, unless I want to read a ton of threads.. so I thought someone might answer for me.

If that's what the developer says to use then use it. I would say he knows why to use 2.6.3.1 but that's not really important. Samsung phones are very hard to brick if you follow the directions. I'm no expert dude, all I do is follow the directions in the OP. If you do that you will be fine. What were you running prior to slim fast? If you're not sure you have the bootloader you can just flash it again.

Hey how's going guys,
I currently am using Insane Hybrid touchwiz 4.4.4 custom rom and wanted to know if it was really worth upgrading to a 5.01 rom..
Any answers are highly appreciated
If you don't work or go to school and you have most of the day to fiddle around with your phone trying to keep it running properly while trying to make a call or send a message, then it might be worth trying.
Otherwise wait for the official carrier update to drop and for devs to get "official" firmware to work with, by then all the bugs should be worked out.

What rom? I see no specific rom mention in this thread, so you will have to be a bit more clear than that.
If you mean going from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2, then of course you wont do a dirty flash. NEVER dirty flash when upgrading to new versions like you can with ordinary dailies or weeklies of the same version.
In this thread speak about GPE 5.01 Rom. Is very clear, and my question is: if a dirty flash is not good, can you tell how is the way to do it? Instructions are very clear.

But I got a little confuse, and one of the most important link is down. If you can go there and take a look, maybe you can come back and help put things together. Thanks for your time, Thanks for your help. This also will help others to stay away of problem. Thanks again !!!!

For the link I gave you You need to be on latest firmware update for your model phone and that would be NK2 kitkat.
The rom offered in the link you posted is an older version of the one I referred you to in development.
Follow the link I gave you and look in you tube for "flashing GPE rom for Tmobile S4" someone probably has a video guide you can follow or use as a reference.

Ok Thanks!!!
