For those that have tried AOSP based ROMs and kernels for Note 3, how has the battery life compared to TW ROMs? I know "Android System" probably doesn't use 25% of battery as is the case for TW Roms usually. Whether the battery usage % lines up for not, it doesn't really matter as I don't really have an issue with battery life on TW ROMs, I'm just curious.

I believe that a stock AOSP kernel help to improve the battery a lot more... or compulsion 12 for the note 3 touchwiz

I have used both AOSP and touchwiz and for the most part, the touchwiz roms have SLIGHTLY better battery life. Starting out, AOSP was dreadful in battery drain but the latest builds in various roms in combination with the latest versions of certain kernels (temesek, lean, etc) have brought the battery lives much closer. They both have the potential to sleep like babies, and you can get great varying battery lives.

I'm experiencing very bad battery life on non sammy roms. With sammy roms battety lasts twice as long. I have tried different kernels, some give a little battery boost, but still not comparable to sammy based roms. Is this normal?
Sure. stock TW samsung roms have the best battery life. that's normal don't worry about it.
hope i helped

It really comes down to your apps, Id say i get better battery life on TW roms like you, but i may see 5% more life not twice. I would download an app like better battery stats, or even just check the base battery stats, see whats using all that battery.
My CM roms use a lot of energy on the "android OS" If you are seeing something else using all your energy, You may need to uninstall that app. It may be conflicting with that rom, but not with TW.
I bought my Galaxy W and instantly started modding it, currently I'm on Arco's CyanogenMod 9 EOL, I didn't have much experience with the stock ROM you actually get with the phone, Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4 UX.
My question is, is the stock ROM the most stable ROM with the best battery life you can get?
I would like to have some basic info like how smooth it is, the battery life, usability compared to the later CyanogenMod ROMs. I'd like to know whether its actually the best option except being kind of out of date now.
Thank you in advance :good:

From what I know the stock rom is better at keeping the battery use low during standby but i don't know whether that's true

I think that's true..
cause some Custom ROM come with some tweaks, some can keep the processor running low during standby. some also have some kind of better ram management.
Also if you want, you also can try some other kernel. cause some can even make longer battery life
switched for a tweaked stock 2.3.6 to a custom ICS and never looked back, the performance is just much better
I would say that my battery lasts longer with a custom rom. On stock sometimes it suddenly went off.
Currently I'm fine with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2214042. And the camera isn't green.
When you flash to a ROM that has less battery life and flash back to the stock ROM do you retain the original battery life or is it decreased by a percentage overall

I'm not sure what exactly the question means, but if you are at 60% on... say, AOKP, then flash TouchWiz, you should be at 60% minus whatever it took to flash the new ROM. As far as how long the battery will last; there are too many things to take into account to give a definite answer whether your battery life on one ROM will be the same as on another.
Thanks

It seems as if my battery is dying faster since I flashed back to the stock ROM than it did prior to flashing another ROM
Your battery doesn't change when you flash ROMs. You will have higher battery drain on a stock ROM, compared to say a ROM like SlimBean. Another factor is what features you have enabled on the stock TW ROM like gestures and smart stay etc.
But more to your question, flashing ROMs does not change your battery. Your battery is your battery, that's it.
ROM/Kernel/usage among other variables are what effect battery life.
thanks

I want to start a poll and a discussion thread, also to help new users (and old users) to decide which ROM to use, if long battery life is the top priority in their choice of ROMs.
I myself have only used STOCK 4.1.2 JB, and STOCK 4.4.2 KK (E988), and I have tested both enough to convince myself that Stock 4.1.2 does have better standby battery life than stock kitkat.
But for the sake of greater completeness, I will include 2 more options in the poll: 4.4.2 Variants, and non-Kitkat Variants.
So based on your experience, which ROM has the best standby battery life for you?

In comparison to kk roms, I think stock jb is better in this regard. I would be curious to know how much better you found it in comparison to stock kk?

Based on battery monitor widget, I averaged 4.6%/hr drain on JB ROM, 6.9%/hr drain on KK ROM. Medium use through a typical day.
I'm getting decent battery on this kk that I've been using for the last four or five days.
People know I'm cynical about everything, and with that in mind, I think this Rom is better than others for battery life.
Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.

Yes but usually JBs have better battery life than KKs. (On the Note 2, this was much more obvious. And many of the custom KK have horrible battery life, both on the Note 2 and the OGP.)
I ran the stock JB on my phone and it was not too bad but this KK is somewhat better battery. I'm not saying that its mind blowing better, just a little bit.
The best battery life on any device I've ever held was the LG G2 running stock JB 4.1.2. Unbelievable.
Fresh TouchWiz vs Fresh CyanogenMod based ROMs - Which is more battery efficient?
Or, does it make any difference?
Lollipop touchwiz is pretty good in terms of battery. Custom Rom like CM is usually chosen for more customization. Some customization along with custom kernel may give better battery power depending on what options/changes are made. I can't truly say which one is the real winner.
If you really care for battery, you can use apps like amplify and greenify for better battery conservation. Obviously, you need to root your device if you settle with touchwiz.
