[Q] How to add 3.20.401.1 to a rooted phone

Hi
I have a HTC one X rooted phone with stack 4.1.1
I get a message that there is a new update 3.20.401.1
After download it tells me to reboot. My phone then goes to ClockWorkmode (CWM)
It stoops there. I do not find any zip file to install.
Any tips for this, or should I just ignore this?

To install official updates u need to have stock recovery which comes with phone, but u have CWM

You just need to flash stock recovery through fastboot again mate then on booting up you should be able to install the update. Or you could install a custom rom with that base without having to flash recovery :good:

they are all pretty damn good roms mate! too hard to choose really, just best to flash em, and see remember to make a nandroid backup also
u shouldn't loose anything apart from bloatware

If you want a custom based on stock, i suggest Android revolution, Viper Rom, or SD ROM.

I did try out Cyanogen lastest image, that do work fine.
But I have to look long for how to find out that I needed to extract boot.img from the cyanogen zip file and install this with flashboot.
But now I like to go back to my original rom. I did take a nandroid backup, and also have an older nandroidbackup.
Its not possible to make the phone go back. When I start restor, all looks ok MD5 etc, but then gets this message
Error while restoring /system!
Do I have to do more flashboot stuf to go back?
I am still able reinstall Cyanogen from zip file. But my Cyanogen backup also fail.
Why

Are you sure you've made the backup with the same recovery as you are attempting to restore it with?
The Android version shouldn't really matter, but there may be exceptions for some things.

If you are using CWM recovery u should be able to go into the backup file (under clockwork mod/backup on sd) and take the boot.img u need to flash via fastboot there. Put it in your fastboot file and then flash using "fastboot flash boot boot.img"

So I should take the boot.img from the backup, run fastimage and restore it?
Then try to restore the backup using clockworkmod?
I am not user if the backup was made with
recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.7-endeavoru.img or
recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img
Is it important to restore with correct version? If so how to see what version that was used?

I am not able to go back to my old image
Not sure why, but the Cyanogenmod does not give me any Mobil data (3G etc)??
I tried to restore the boot.img from correct backup using flashboot flash boot boot.img and then try to restore.
But still I get Error while restoring /system!
Some note:
I made a backup of my working Cyanogenmod, this I am able to restore without getting the restoring error.
No I also have tried recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img
But there are some different thing going on.
When I first tested to restore my original image, I get menu like this when trying to restore:

Have I used another clockworkmode to make the backup?

If you want to be sure you use the same recovery as where the nandroid is made with ? Flash the recovery.img from the nandroid folder.
Then flash the boot.img from the nandroid folder, go into recovery :
Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced - wipe dalvik cache
Mounts & storage - format cache, data, system
Then restore the nandroid.

It seems that the backup was done with CWM based v6.0.2.7
Not sure where I have got this version.
Latest version listed here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager is 5.8.4.0 and not 6.0.2.7 that I have used

Everything is working fine and I start to understand how its connected together.
But there are one thing that still puzzle me, the boot.img
When and why do I need to change that when I go to and from CM 10.1.2 (4.2.2) and Original image 4.1.1
What trigger the need of the change?
Should not this be restored correctly when I restore a backup. (In Clockwork mode)?
Does this work automatically whit Philz recovery 5.6.1.img?
I do like to change image in my phone without need a PC to run fastboot !!

When you change rom you need to flash the corresponding boot.img from that particular rom or nandroid backup.
We can't flash boot.img files via recovery because we have s-on devices so fastboot is a must.

(Q) Advice before installing CM11 or Vanir

Hello there
I want to install CM11 or Vanir nightlies on my friend's T999. His phone is unlocked, as we are in Spain and use a network called Orange. If I install the rom (I prefer installing CM by the installer, as his phone isn't rooted and that would simplify the process) would he lose his network connectivity? I know he probably won't but... Anything can happen. Also, should I go for the installer or the manual way? Do themes for CM work in Vanir nightlies? And what is the EFS folder for? Should I make a Backup of it?

Yes I'd back up EFS Folder. There's plenty of threads and posts around here. You will need to flash custom Recovery before flashing CM11 or others.

I will backup the EFS folder as you said. Also, should I root and install CWM recovery manually or should I just use the CM Installer App to make things easier and go anywhere from there?

Don't bother Rooting first. Just install CWM either with the app or via Odin. Once CWM is working, flash supersu zip via CWM to Root.

I found some kind of tutorial that uses ODIN to install CWM, in a page called Team Android, but it is from 2012 and I don't know if it is outdated/doesn't work.If it doesn't work with UVUENC2, could you please link some kind of tutorial to install CWM and Root? Thanks

That should be good. Try this one as well. Odin hasn't changed much to make it different. Make sure to use Odin Version 3.x or higher.

Ok I've got Odin 3.09 and the root .tar file. One last question, can I both root and install CWM by using Odin? Will the phone brick or something similar if I install them both by Odin? I found the root method for UVUENC2 and CWM 6.0.4.5 Advanced Edition (Philz Recovery) from a page called trueandroidblogspot(dot)com. It uses the same method as the video you posted in your reply. Sounds like too complex round about way to do this.
1. Flash CWM you have via Odin.
2. Flash CM 11 via the CWM of Step 1.
I don't think you need to root beforehand unless you intend to keep Stock Touchwiz. CWM can take a Nandroid without Rooting the current Stock.

Well I didn't know I could install CWM without Rooting thanks for the help again Can I recover the EFS folder via CWM? If I toy around with the phone's network, I will be in a really BAD situation and wouldn't forgive myself. Also, should I go for CM11 or CM10.2.1? I prefer stability to newer features.

If you take an EFS backup now while you are still on Touchwiz, you can retain it forever. I do believe you can restore it back on CM. If not then you can restore the nandroid of Touchwiz you took and restore that way.
I believe CM 11 is pretty stable as of now. Just make sure to grab their Stable release and not a nightly release.

Will be taking CM11 m3 as d2lte only has nightlies, thanks for all your advice. One last question, will I have a corrupted EFS folder if I upgrade from Jelly Bean 4.3 to Kitkat (CM11) or is it the same thing? I found that the best way for restoring it is to get a root explorer, copy and paste it (overwriting if it exists) and then booting in recovery and wiping data, cache and dalvik cache. Have you tried this method or any other?

So long you don't flash a different Modem, EFS won't be lost. You can update from 4.3 to CM 11 (Not the same. CM11 = 4.4).
Typically I use Terminal Emulator and Run Reboot NVRESTORE to restore corrupted EFS Partition.

Well I think that is all that I need, I thank you for all your help. This is the first time I flash a ROM in a GSM phone, other times it has been on Tablets and damaged cellphones. Really, thank you for all your assistance. I think this thread could be really helpful to noobs like me who are new on flashing ROMS

Any reason to choose one method over the other?
I'm running rooted stock 4.3 (MK1) on SM-P600 and I've done a nandroid backup in TWRP (which I'm assuming I can restore if I don't like KK).

Odin is clean install (wipe everything flash a fresh O/S). OTA is upgrade or dirty flash, you still able to keep your setup and all your installed apps. If your phone is running smooth without any issue then OTA should be fine. If you have weird issues, then Odin is recommended. I see you already have TWRP and probably already rooted that means you can not use OTA method and if you use Odin you will wipe out everything including TWRP, root, your setup all the download apps, system/user data and so on. Your phone will be like a new one. This bring us to the point that you will NOT able to restore 4.3 (you will need to reflash TWRP and so on..) and we have mix reports about once you on Kitkat it's not possible to flash back 4.3 due to different bootloader.

I updated via Odin and it was a dirty flash and everything works fine. I can still create a folder on the external sd and copy a file from the internal sd to the folder that I created on the external sd.

The same for me, but I had to root it again. The root was lost, but everything alse working fine. ( I have sm-p601)

[Q] Galaxy S3 I747M Rogers ROM unlocked and rooted How to Backup ROM to SD?

Guys,
I rooted GS3 using CFroot and Odin, SuperSU is running. I have i747m Rogers canadian version. How do I backup the current ROM?
I downloaded 'stock' ROM from SamMobile I747MVLUFNF2 for backup purpose. There is so many posts and videos everywhere on how to do backup of current ROM and I am very confused, and dont want to mess this phone up. I downloaded ROM Manager but when I boot into recover mode I dont have option to backup ROM, only restore from SD, reset, restore from flash, wipe cache , there is no backup option. I pulled the battery out and tried many times it did not see backup ROM option.
This is what I want to do, what is the best aproach ?
1. How to backup current Rooted ROM to sdcard, so I can recover if required. ROM Manager I have on the phone is v5.5.3.7. I watched video on galaxys3root.com but he used 9300 GS3 from different carrier.
2. I want to try a new ROM give the phone new life, with all functions working including front camera. WHich ROM do you recommend for my phone?
I also installed ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, Terminal Emulator, Nandroid Manager, and BusyBox. Not sure if I need these apps, but they are there.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

I loaded Philz Touch 6.48 for d2lte, and it worked great. Did full backup and I am ready to flash.
DO I NEED to keep ROM Manager for anything ?

I don't use ROM manager. I just flash a custom ROM and a quick reboot app which gives me the option to boot into download mode, power off, reboot system, or reboot into recovery.

1. how do I copy backup from SD to computer. These are hidden on SD card and not visible even to Android? Is there a trick to it?
2. Which ROM do you recommend for Galaxy S3 i747m (original Rogers now unlocked), so all the functions work well and stable on the phone? I was interested in CM11 Nightly.
This is ALL new to me, first time doing it.

Both CWM and TWRP recoveries create a directory in /sdcard named either clockworkmod or TWRP and store the backups in a subdirectory. It is likely that PHILZ does the same. There may even be an option to store the backup to the external sdcard at the time of creation.

TWRP stores the backup in a folder called \TWRP\Backups\serial#ofphone\name of folder.
I'm not sure about CWM as I don't have a phone with CWM at the moment.
I run the Liquidsmooth milestone on a Nexus4 and Moto G because I love the dark theme.

I have a device on TWRP and another on CWM, I just didn't bother with the full path because he is on PHILZ, as you recommended, and I could not check that path.

Thanks to you guys, I have successfully converted GS3 stock Samsung 4.4.3 GS3 (rogers unlocked) to Philz Touch with CM11 rom, works great on Bell (Virgin) network.
But I have a question;
I would like to try TWRP If I want to switch from Philz to TWRP recovery instead, how much is involved to make a switch? Which recovery is more popular and better supported?
Is it as simple as flashing in Odin proper twrp .tar file for my d2lte?

If there is a flash able zip for twrp, you can boot into philz and flash it.
Any backups made with philz cannot be restored with twrp.
I tried twrp and switched to philz due to issues I had flashing custom roms with twrp.
I don't have my i747m because I have it to a relative in May so support has probably improved with newer versions of twrp.

Philz Touch to TWRP recovery migration.
I flashed TWRP over Philz Touch using Odin. I am going to wait until newer CM11 nightly comes out to test it, but Philz seems more intuitive to me. I can always flash back to restore backups I made with Philz Touch.

[Q] Need some adivse PLEASE!!!!

So this is the situation,
I have SPH-l710 Rooted with CWM, I THOUGHT I made a backup of my stock system.....It made a image.zip and an image directory. SOOOO I flashed the phone with CM121...........In light of all the issues I could not get my camera to work with any app, them CM121 updated, Google play got stuck in a error force close loop that could only be avoided by logging into a separate user account on lollipop. Which is where the camera began to work oddly enough. Anyways I use my camera constantly and wanted to revert back to my 4.4.2 kitkat. SOOOO I booted into recovery and when I selected restore it couldnt find anything. So I installed from the image.zip and everything appeared to be fine EXECPT I couldnt get passed the second samsung logo right after the animation. Just stuck........How can I restore my poor phone back to my system image I have saved?
I tried this multiple times, then just reloaded CM121. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

You could Odin back to stock. What modem are you on? (Ex. nj3, nd8, etc)

Would I just use odin to flash the image.zip file to restore my original os or would I use CMW and install from zip and use the image.zip file?

If you Odin to stock, you need a computer. You download the program (sadly Odin is leaked software so it's pretty shady; you could give Heimdall a shot but it didn't work for me, also Odin is Windows only and Heimdall is cross-platform) and then you download a .tar of a stock image and you plug your phone in in download mode and flash it.
However, there is no nj3 modem so you need to use an older one. Is your phone sprint, Virgin Mobile, boost, etc?

I would assume so, however, I'm not sure. I've only used TWRP and a little Philz for recovery. Afraid I can't help you there, but someone else (or Google lol) might know

I think Odin can only flash tars. Ideally, you'd want to restore the backup with the software that made it.

Cwm recovery does not create zip files. If you made a full backup in cwm it should contain system, data, and boot img files. Restore it in cwm recovery.
But to go back to KitKat from lollipop you must wipe internal storage in clockworkmod recovery first .(if that's the recovery you are using).
By the way cwm is pretty crappy. After you fix it, install twrp recovery.

Thanks for the reply, been tryin to get help for a while. So my version of CMW has the option to create an image backup & also create the same backup in zip format. Inside the zip and inside the image directory they have the boot img files and the system data and ect. I have 2 questions, 1 is what part of the internal storage needs to be wiped? I assume you mean format the system directory? which would wipe the os out at that point? And second since I have cmw installed if I wanted to put twrp on and not wipe the system yet would I need to just use odin and flash it to overwrite cmw? I installed cmw with odin to root the phone originally, cmw is not restoring my backups at all correctly so I would love something that would really work.

I installed cmw with odin to root the phone originally, cmw is not restoring my backups at all correctly so I would love something that would really work.

By wiping internal storage, I mean internal sd card (data/media) not system.
If you cannot restore your backup, and are not worried about losing your data, I would recommend using odin to flash the whole stock .tar and starting fresh from scratch. Then re root by using odin to install twrp.
If you are on boost or virgin Mobile use the ndc tar.

Thanks for the info, I will look into the tar I just need to make sure it's compatible with NJ3 and I am on Virgin mobile. I attached a snapshot of the file cmw created, Im pretty sure I saw a post on how to convert that into a flash-able tar file by combining them into one. That backup is clean except for a screwy boot splash screen and being rooted but besides that it was the first backup. Do you know if twrp has any issues with CM12.1? If I can flash my backup and un-root I would be able to start from scratch and do it the right way this time. I attached the snapshot just for your opinion on if I can use my backup from my phone if you dont mind, also to install twrp if I can use my backup I would need to unroot then re-root with twrp correct? Any thanks so much for the responses

If you put that back on your phone in the clockworkmod folder just restore it? If you flash the ndc tar in odin you will be stock unrooted. Ndc is the build before nj3. There is no nj3 tar so ndc is fine. If you manage to restore your backup and get going, you can just get the app flashify from the play store to install twrp. Get the image file of twrp 2.8.7.0 for sprint (d2spr) and install in flashify. Get it from twrp website.
Your backup only has system in it, it has no data. Next time do a full backup. System, data, and boot. You're trying to go from cm12.1 lollipop to KitKat touchwiz without a data wipe and restore. Won't work.
Honestly dude, you seem to have limited knowledge on this. Don't take that the wrong way at all. To save us both some time and get your phone working, just follow this

Not taken the wrong way, I am limited knowledge on the subject and that's why I ended up with problems. I appreciate the help since I could not get anyone to respond.

I appreciate the link, understand the process. Just wondering the link to the .tar file is broken (at least for the moment) I will continue to try it, do you know if the zip file from samsung-updates " L710VPUDND8 firmware version for Galaxy S 3 LTE (Sprint) "
will work also?

Nd8 will work, however nj2 is the sprint equivalent to nj3 (latest update). It works fine. It's the last one I used. You may need to do the dialer activation code to get service working after you flash. I think it's ##72786# . I'll check.
