From Dankoman (slimroms gapps maintainer).
Google changed a bunch of stuff in new play services. This has caused issues for several apps, including maps and hangouts. Some modifications needed to be done, but I think I've got the kinks worked out. After flashing latest gapps (which is version 282), if you're having issues with maps or hangouts won't stop trying to update itself, do this:
1. Remove Google account from phone
2. Clear data for play store, play services, and services framework.
3. Reboot into recovery and clear cache.
This should prevent the need to clean flash (though that will also take care of the issue, if you'd rather do that), and you should only have to do this once.
Slimroms minimal Gapps
slim minimal gapps are very basic and light, slim rom also comes with nova launcher as default, you will have to dl google now launcher from the playstore (if you get an error about upgrading google search first just log into another google app before trying again. ie. gmail).

I'll try this after I get home and set my kindle to OtterX using Hashcodes instuctions. Good Work!
If you've never used slimrom before its based of asop and
it has slim recents which are like multiwindow crossed with recents, a dark ui switch in settings that also themes most google apps, slim center which has lots of goodies including slimosizer for removing unwanted system apps (be careful what you delete), new reminder in notifications and lots lots more. With it being an unofficial build then slim ota feature does not work.

Going to try this when I get home. Got to do the whole thing in one shot. Otterx bootloader, recovery, and this rom.
just follow hashcodes instructions

I'll be honest - the only difference I feel between ART and Dalvik is the installation time... I think I'll go back to Dalvik in a few days to see if I feel it then.
see slim center for change logs and faq it mentions a small bug with play services and a fix ill put some extra links to faq etc in op later.
Edit: Updated OP

Thank you, and happy new year.
One question. If I am changing to this ROM from the wingray one do I have to wipe everything or just davlik and cash?
I'll flash and let you know Schischu, great gift for the new year
Thanks very much to the developers.
It's working great! . Didn't worked out of the box. Had to set the APN to my provider.. It shows 3G, not H besides the radio icon, but the speed i get is the usual from my provider (vIvo Brazil)
I did a dirty flash over the Omnirom 4.4.2 Wingray rom. Only wiped cache and dalvik. I didnt flash google apps or su again. It's all working well. I keep using Art runtime. Thanks again.
Flushed over wingray, working great. Recognized provider immediately. Great job.
Just repartitioned and flashed this rom. Everything working great with ART enabled. (3G connection as well.) Feels really snappy after a few basic tweaks.
Two questions though..
1. Aren't the status bar and navigation bar supposed to be transparent?
2. Is there some kind of workaround to get tablet mode? Would really prefer to just have one bar at the bottom of the screen.
Thanks a lot for bringing KitKat to the Xoom!
Sent a long time ago from a Galaxy S2 far, far away...
has anyone tried the tethering feature? Is it working properly? Sorry for not being able to test but I really can't afford to lose the tethering right now as internets is limited.
Source/Modifictaion needed for RIL to work
Schischu, thx a lot for making RIL works in Xoom, is it possible for you to share the modification (source code) needed to make RIL works, we are pretty much stuck at Atrix 4g. Thx. in advance
Ooops, thx. a lot, github is updated with Everest & Stingary device tree, Thx. a lot! Schischu

Great work guys!

Just one question. Do I have to flash the BigPart boot image package after I do the repartition, or it's not needed?

@Schischu thank you very much. I'm looking forward to having a good internet connection to test it. You are awesome, mate!
I am using this ROM for the past 24 hours and I can say I am quite satisfied with performance considering that is still first build.
I use OP Tips and never use ART due to incompatibility issue with some of my applications
- I had to manually add my APN settings for my data card
- Switched to Launcher 3 since it is smoother
No major bugs so far and I believe that soon this Rom will fly
A Big Thank You
To @Schischu, @realjumy and all the other great devs out there, a big thank you for keeping this tab alive. You guys rock!
I'll be doing the Repartition and shiny new kitkat rom as soon as I have the time.
Thanks guys

Welcome to CMB Roms- CM done Better... Dark Themed for his/her Pleasure
Why CMB?
We are just better , in a nutshell we set out to give you the best of CM, with none of the annoying features (see list below), all this wrapped in a custom black theme. We used the KISS principal when deciding what to offer, we based our frameworks on CM alone (not FrankenFrameworks like some others out there), enabling us to provide updates and bug fixes as soon as CM does. This doesn't mean we are only relying on them for development, it just eases merging.
Features
Based on Android 4.4.2_M2, CM11.0
All current features CM11.0
Customized Dark Holo Theme With Gray ActionBars

Ramdisk security tweaks, you can adb as root now!

I only get half of a screen...
Tried with couple different gapps and with no gapps and still got the same thing.
Also when it first comes up there is some sort of fc going on but cant tell what it is due to it being cut in half. And it's only in landscape that you get left half of screen, in portrait you have nothing.
Never seen this before.
Any ideas?

Twrp2.6.3.1. Wipe system/data/as. Flash Rom & gapps. Wipe cache/dalvik. Reboot. No boot animation. After several minutes only a half screen visible. Rebooted to twrp. Reflashed Rom and gapps again. No boot animation. Long time no picture at all. Twrp. Wipe cache&dalvik. No boot animation. Half screen view.
Anyone having this working?

140126 boots fine.
A few notes (probably issues) after the last quick review if I might:
* No remove/edit options when dragging homescreen/taskbar icon.
* Wifi (WPA2) does not work.

I will look into these things.... Can we get some feedback.. Can anyone else confirm these same issues.. Thx for the feedback..As always lj
My install booted up. The wireless worked after being persistant. (Same for other 4.4.2 distros) I note that when the keyboard sounds start, the wireless will connect., so I keep doing it until it wotks, 4-5 tries. Setup is quick and loading my programs from the store works well. Something I like to do is make the status bar and the navigation bar translucent and reduce visability to zero. That way I only see the elements and not the black bar. So far, I can only do thus with twa_priv's build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why isn't there XXXXXXX feature.
A: Shoot us a Suggestion if you want to see something added. While we are not going to promise to implement, we will always look into it
Q: But CM and all the others have..
A: ROM developers, including CM, build something they want to use. The ROM dev that includes something they won't run implies less than 100% effort to ensure it does work. As a team, we have similar goals and objectives. If XYZ ROM has a feature you want, and we don't (or don't want), feel free to use XYZ ROM, or build your own custom version of Octo-Kat

Basic Instructions:
Download ROM .zip file
Download KitKat GApps - * See Note Below! *
Reboot to Recovery (Note: Use Three-Finger or adb reboot recovery - ROM Manager or similar software is NOT supported)
--- TWRP is the ONLY recovery Team OctOs uses - We do not support flashing on CWM but it can be used if TWRP can not flash ---

Clear Dalvik/Cache
Reboot
A Note about the Team OctOs GApps
We in Team OctOs believe in choices. We believe in leaving the fundamental decisions about your phone to you.
In that spirit, Team OctOs gives you options for your GApps experiences. While any ODEX'ed GApps package should work, we offer you the choice of using some of the same GApps packages that we use ourselves, and leave the choice up to you.
You can find our Team OctOs GApps packages here, and break down into the following types:
GPe - Google Experience
Regular GPe GApps
Dalvik-Enhanced GPe GApps
AOSP
AOSP GApps
Dalvik-Enhanced AOSP GApps
The Dalvik-Enhanced packages are NOT ART compatible. If you plan to run ART, don't use those.
We will only update the thread with Stable Releases, whenever possible. This means that the thread may be behind non-milestone releases. If you have an issue with compulsive flashing, or feel the need to live 'life on the edge of brick', we invite you to follow us on Facebook and/or Twitter. Any dailies that can be released, we will release there. Please note, we pull these releases after a day or two, so if the latest link posted there is empty, simply wait until the next one.

Come Chat with Team OctOs!
On March 6, 2014, Team OctOs will be holding a Google Hangout Meet and Greet/Q&A session beginning at 9AM Eastern time. This will continue until we get bored with it.
Send an email to: [email protected] with your Google Hangout email (if different) and we'll send the invite as the time comes closer.
Bring questions, comments, or just come to hangout.
Gonna give this a test drive! Thanks for the hard work!

Translators Needed!
We are currently looking for translators to help localize OctOs into other languages.
Many of the main ROM components are already translated (built-in), but anything that we've changed or added won't be. Currently, we are "English predominate" speakering team, but many of the users may not be!
If you would like to help bring OctOs to your language, check out: https://crowdin.net/project/team-octos-octo-kat-android-ro
You can sign up as a Translator and then start translating the OctOs project. This makes it easy to identify and translate the individual strings.
Alright, a new toy to play with. Thank you to the team for your time and effort. Downloading now, will report any bugs if I may find any.
Only thing i've found was that when attempting to change notification LED settings, settings itself crashes. Besides that everything is good to go. Had a facepalm moment however when I 'discovered' the advanced settings menu lol. Great work on the rom, I do believe i'll be running this one for a while.
Almost forgot the logcat, here is a full logcat from around the time it happened. Looks like actual crash is around line 60

So far this is working like a dream. This is my first Kitkat experience and im loving it. I'll report any bugs I find, thanks again! :good:

GPe GApps include the Google Experience (meaning more).
AOSP GApps is a barebones GApps set that allows you to add only what you want from the Play Store.

After installing rom and gapps.
2: /settings/dev-settings/animation scales x3 change to .25x.

don't be impatient it can take upto 15 minutes on bootanimation, just sit tight.
Layers
Layers is a way of installing overlays to your system.
It is in very early development (but already I like it).
It can change resources, ie. strings, colours and values.
It can also be used to fix some rom bugs etc.
We will just be using it as a theme engine for now.
Main Layers xda thread Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/official-layers-bitsyko-apps-rro-t3012172
A collection of Layers available Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/themes/0-themes-official-mega-rro-themes-t3011075
Layers has its own app (unfortunatly it doesn't support legacy devices YET) so I modified my Sion app to be able to install them.
The BitSyko team who developed Layers are working on a new app which should be very smart.
Instructions:
**************
pick a Layers.zip file from the collections link above or the About screen of the Sion app and download it to your sdcard.
Next open Sion (either from /settings/interface/sion installer or from the Sion app in your app drawer.
click Button 3 "Layers Installer".
click Button 1 "Choose Your Layers.zip".
click your predownloaded Layers.zip file.
click Button 2 "Install Chosen Layer".
click Button 3 "Reboot Your Device".
Enjoy your new theme.
TIPS
*****
1/ you can install multiple Layer.zips befor rebooting.
2/ To delete one layer at a time
click Button 4 "Installed Layers"
click on the Layer you would like to delete.
check the checkbox and then click the bottom left Button "Delete Your Chosen Layer".
3/ You can delete all installed Layers by checking the checkbox then clicking the bottom right Button "Delete all Installed Layers".
4/ Use the Installed Layers Button to check what you have Installed.
5/ After deleting any Layers you will need to reboot for the deletions to take effect.
6/ you can istall any number of layers at once, but if you have 2 the same ie. 2 different frameworks.apk's then they will conflict with each other.
7/ Please read about layers in there xda thread (link can also be found within the About screen of my Sion app).
I suggest trying Brian Gills SynergyV2 Layer 1st.
Link: https://plus.google.com/+BrianGill55/posts/9Giqp72hCAG (V3 coming soon).
theres a little bug with synergyV2 layers in the hangouts.apk, just use sion to delete this layer before rebooting. (you can also delete the dialler.apk as we don't need that with the Kindle.

Good to see development on the OtterX continuing. Good luck on SlimLP for the kindle.
Thanks mate. I'm nearly there just a few issues to sort, hopefully not long now
Development like this is why I consider the otterx to fit in the same family as my Nexus 5 and 10. It's crazy...a 3 year old tablet that is technologically inferior to my freaking WATCH, is receiving Lollipop. Outstanding work, truly incredible!
Can't wait to see how far we can take this device. Lollipop adds at least another year to the life of this device.
Can't wait

must flash rom then gapps before rebooting.

(1st boot will hang or crash on initial boot. leave it for a minute or 2 then reboot (long press power), upon rebooting it will boot to the welcome wizard).

Bugs
1/ Aosp keyboard crashes, "FIXED"
2/ boot animation a little borked on part1, "FIXED"
3/ slim launcher has no app drawer icon set by default. just long press home screen, widgets, slim launcher and add a shortcut "All Apps"
4/ screen rotation has some graphical glitch.
5/ Laggy (maybe just our poor kindles can't cope )
6/ Initial boot causes bootloop (just reboot after a couple of minutes and all will be fine).
let me know when you find more bugs, some are inherited from the slim source as they are only just bringing M up.
Tips
1/ set all 3 animation settings in dev/settings to off.
2/ using a kernel tool ie, "kernel Auditor" set io scheduler to deadline and read ahead to 256kb.
3/ goto settings/apps and make sure permissions are checked for playstore etc
4/ leave it alone while it downloads apps as it nearly stops once everything is installed and setup, reboot and then leave alone again for a couple of minutes. "the wait is worth avoiding frustration ".
5/ Layers works, so full theming is sweet. dl the layers manager app from playstore, "i love Jimmy's magpie theme" (dont forget to checkout the about section and package name)
ENJOY
just incase

Are you saying we need to have at least the 2.04 bootloader or use that exact one?
at least that one, is there a newer one?

Woot! Thank you @lovejoy777 for your continued development effort.
could this rom be modified to work with the Amazon Fire 5th Gen?

probably, but why ask here, these two devices are years apart.
ask the devs working on slim LP for Fire 2015.
in general devs only build roms for device they own.

no its a different device completely, but it could be built from source if someone updates your device and kernel repos. its very slow with many bugs too at the minute. I've only just got it booting? but working through them one by one. interesting that a 5th gen wants a 1st gen rom ? woot!!! do you not have M yet?
