Is it possible to format an external SD card or a 2.5" HDD connected via OTG to something other than FAT32 and make the tablet (8.4) see it ?
I've searched and found pages and YT vids about formatting to EXT2 and 3 etc, but they all seem to be for moving apps/games to the SD card with software like Link2SD etc.
I've formatted the SD and HDD to none FAT32, but haven't used the Link software. But, obviously the tablet can't see the card/drive.
I'm just wanting a storage location, not to move apps/games.
The reason is, I want to be able to download RAR files when away from home, then extract the files, but most of the files I'd download would extract to over the 4GB limit.
At the time of writing the tablet isn't rooted, but will be soon.

1gb ext3 (maybee its ext2 or 4 I dunno)
no swap
a few days ago my phone sayd that the sd card is corrupted!
The strange thing is that all my apps which are on the exp partition are still working flawlessly and I can also access all files on the sd card via ES Strong File manager!
What I cant do for ex. is setting up ringtones which are on my sd card. They show up in the ring tone menu but no sound plays but when I open em in the mp3 player they play fine!
I also cant take pics/vids with the cam because the phones says I should insert a sd card!
Is this a known problem?
What I wanna do is getting my data and my apps over to my computer and then reformating the card and transfering everything back. Just to see if it works then (doubt it!).
But I dont know how to do it because of the ext partition! Can you give me a hint please?

its quite easy for one partiton to be corrupt while the other isnt, thats because there using diffrent fs's unless you have linux there is no way to access your ext partiton, just format the card and start again
Download the gparted(?) liveCD.
Mount the disk image, via daemon tools/cd etc.
This way, you can just reformat the partition you need.
I found this useful switching my ext4 to ext3 without wiping my FAT32 partition.
As long as you don't attempt to resize or touch the FAT32 partition, as linux handles FAT32 differently, and can become temperamental.
Shouldnt I be able to access the ect partition from any linux distri via vm ware?

Dudes, bit of a dilemma, if I format my 16Gb micro sd to NTFS and put it in my desire, the desire doesnt like it and it formats it as FAT32 .. which is ok, but I would very much like to tranfer files as big as 4Gb to the "removable drive" when using the desire as a USB drive.
Only trouble is you cant do that when using a FAT32 drive.
Is there a way of formatting the SD to NTFS but stil the handset will work with it.. Ie if its NTFS the desire will want to reformat it but if its FAT 32 the USB storage options only good for the odd small file.
Anyway around this so that the 16Gb SD card can be used on the desire (ie for apps and the like) but can also be used in the usb storage option to transfer large files of upto say 4Gb ?

Why can't you copy 4GB files to the SD card? My External USB hard drive on my laptop is FAT32 and I copied the contents of my old external HD to it without issue (about 200GB). File system isn't the problem here

You can copy more than 4GB to a fat32 filesystem because FAT32 partition can be larger than that.
But if one file is larger than 4GB then you can't copy it on FAT32, this is a limitation of FAT32 filesystem:

Biggest single file ive ever seen was about 3 GB. Never knew about the 4 GB limitation to Fat32 before. What files larger than 4 GB are there? 1080p files maybe?

Why u do not extract the image files and install from the folder later?
After extracting u can copy the folder to sdcard ;-)

you can use gsplit or h-split!!! to split files on pc!!..

but I really want the USB storage facility on the Desire to match having a USB key .. ie tranfer a 4Gb file the same as I would to my USB key (which is optimised and formatted to NTFS) Then I only have to take one around with me.
I have done this and it works (providing you have it plugged into USB as soon as you switch on with NTFS formatted SD in the phone) but then the sd cannot be used in that state to save apps to etc - so its one or the other it seems
ive used the sd formatted to ntfs and put it in my desire and plugged it into a usb straight away and it works - but if u dont do it straight away the handset says "SD card not formatted do you want to format it now" in which case it will format it to FAT32 or not let you use it as USB storage device at all.

you can also split your files easily with winrar
What about exFAT? Can Desire read that format?
u can also use programs like winrar to split em in parts as well.. if its a movie u want to playback though, ;p its pretty impossible unless u split it urself with a movie editor..which aint a hard task..
Just use winrar archive the file to multiple archives, copy them over and unpack it

if you have a big sdcard and you transfer a lot of movies or files bigger than 4gb why don't you make 2 partitions on your sdcard....on FAT32 with the size you want on the desire and one NTFS for your data!!! i don't think it would cause any trouble. i might be mistaken though i never tried it. but for usbs works wonders
What about use partitions? Let's say 4GB FAT32 and 12GB NTFS... will it work?

I think it should work, but the Desire wouldn't read the NTFS partition, you could only use it for USB file transfer.
Confused on External SD card, Internal SD card etc etc. I have a 32GB Patriot Class 10 card. I formatted this card in Clockwork recovery on the phone with a 1024MB Partition. Don't think it even asked me about ext 3, or 4 etc. OK. Now, If I use settings, then under wireless and Network settings Usb Utilities, Click on connect the storage to PC. I connect my USB cable then I have the familiar Android and it says USB is connected. OK, now I have a drive I will call Drive Q. This drive has all the TMobile stuff such as QIK , Photo editor, etc. It also has a folder called External_SD as well as another Folder called usbStorage. This drive Q is roughly 12GB. OK...Now, my SD card which is 32GB is seen as drive U on my desktop. This drive has my clockwork folder with my backups and my Music folder.
I guess I am trying to figure out the best use of drives and there intended purposes. The External_SD folder is only 580Kb or so. The usbStorage folder is a zero byte folder. And finally, when I did run a backup using Clockwork recovery, it basically said it was skipping External SD card since folder was empty.
Now that I am confused on all of this, maybe someone here can actually follow my post and make sense of how the storage is working on our phones

I have rooted my phone, applied the revolutions ROM and also ElementalX Kernal.
Everything is working but when I plug the phone into the PC to sync of look at the files. The Internal SD card says 10 gig not 16 gig.
If I look on the phones storage it says 16 gig still.
Is this something I have done wrong. Is this even possible? I havn't done any partitioning. Just followed the guides.
On a side note - the main reason to custom ROM my phone was so I could save full games and apps to the external SD but it appears I still cannot do this. Can someone advise the proper method in which I can save a complete game on the external card, effectively bypassing the google restrictions. apparently doing everything I have done is still not enough. All the apps I have installed to move files across from internal to external still only send the partial file, not the whole. My 16 gig will soon enough be full and my 64 gig SD card is a complete waste. I didn't buy it for videos and pictures but for games and apps...

The phone will show the total capacity of 16GB but you never get the full 16GB (around 14GB is actually available) Of that remaining storage which is partitioned is the OS and other files which takes it down to about 9 which is what you have for use.
Use folder mount for moving games to the sdcard.

16GB is the total space available. Some of this space is covered up by system, cache, recovery and other partitions. The PC just shows the data partition, which in most cases is something around 10GB in size.

For this you could use Link2SD, as the donate version gives you the possibility to move full apps to SD.
As a prerequisite you would have to format and partion your SD Card first, e.g. using MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Save all Data on your external SD. After this you have to create TWO primary partitions.
The fist hast to be
FAT32, Primary for all your stuff (Musik, Pictures, Downloads, Backups, ....)
EXT2, Primary (otherwise Link2SD can't create a mount point for the linked Apps
Have you done this an instered your card back into your M8, you open up Link2SD. It will on first run ask for root rights and of which kind your link partition is. Simply choose ext2. Link2SD will then search for the correct primary partition on your external SD and mount it. After this you can Link your Apps to the ext2 partition using Link2SD.
I see. I understand regarding the 10gig storage now. Phew I thought I had lost 6 gig through somehow.
I have installed folder mount and paired a game using source and destination and it moved the file across. I went to check my storage and my internal storage states 1.6gig and my external SD states 0bytes.
I believe this is correct as the phone thinks the internal storage is being used so it says 1.6gig however the files are all on the external.
so if this has worked, why do I need to partition as you mentioned? Has the 1.6gig file not actually moved across then as I have not partitioned it?

Also I wouldn't have a clue how large the partitions should be. Is there a ball park figure for a 64 gig SD card considering most space I will use for apps and games rather than music/videos.

Phew, didn't see that @gsmyth answered as well. Folder mount is of course a solution as well.
I'm using a 64GB external as well and partitioned it to an amount of 54GB (FAT32 for my music and stuff) and 10GB ext2, as an equivalent to my internal storage available for any data.

has anyone had any success with using SD cards formatted with something other than FAT32 on the Redmi Note 8 Pro? The 4GB file size limit and limits on usable characters in file names (although there might be easy workarounds for that one, haven't tried yet) make FAT32 a really poor choice for me. I have tried formatting the card with exFAT, NTFS, as well as ext2/3/4, but it recognized none of them. I get that Xiaomi haven't licensed exFAT or NTFS, but I don't see why ext2/3/4 wouldn't work. Probably just disabled in the stock kernel?
There's also this option to use the SD card as an extension to the internal storage. Not sure what filesystem that uses, but it doesn't seem like a very transparent and portable thing to do.
My device is rooted, so I'd be interested in root-only options as well. It's probably possible to get it working with external apps that include FUSE drivers (I have exFAT working using EDS on another device), but I'd prefer a "native" solution.

When I cannot answer your other questions ATM, I can already answer that one since I tried it with other devices and this one is no exception.
As you suspected, that's definitely is not a portable solution. You can no longer use the SD card as a plug and play portable solution.
That said it does not sound like a very good idea to keep ejecting that SD tray to transfer files, that would be done more easily with either an hybrid USB-C USB-A pendrive or just an OTG USB-C cable.
However that's always good to have an SD card in there to backup important files with a few thumbs presses at any time.
Speaking of USB-C drives/OTG cables, it is possible those do not have the same limitations SD card might have when inserted internally. I have not looked into it just yet because I usually do not put files that big on my phone, but I can see it could be a problem (large video files or backups for example).

Try this, -
Connect SD card to PC.
Do back up of important files from SD card.
Open 'Disk Management' in Windows.
In 'Disk Management' delete all partitions on SD card.
Leave SD card unformated.
Download software 'SD Card Formatter'
Format SD card with this software.
Test SD card on Redmi Note 8 Pro.
