(Q) What is this gray bar with a thumbprint like icon, and how do I make it go away? - T-Mobile HTC One (M8)

As of today I have started to get a gray bar that appears on the bottom of my screen with a design that looks like a thumbprint on it. It covers the bottom part of my keyboard making the space and return keys completely inaccessible. The only way I've found to temporarily get rid of it is to restart my phone. Anyone know what this is?

hold home and swipe up to see if it goes away.

How about a screenshot? Install a new app recently?

I took a screenshot, and tried to post it with the initial question, but the forums won't let me post it since I have never commented here before.
No new apps, but I had just recently started using the car dock. It did it probably about 15 times that day, but hasn't done it since, and I didn't come back to look for answers until the next day.
Thanks for the responses, and if it happens again I'll try Tidbits suggestion and post if it works.

[Q] Notification Screen Flash & Missing Smiles

I have 2 very specific happenings with my Note 2.
1) At (seemingly) random intervals, my phone's screen will fade on and off displaying some sort of notification screen that I can't find anywhere. I must have hit this in some settings menu but don't know where. It has big white notifications for missed calls, emails, and texts, all of which are always 0 on the screen. Again, this screen fades in and out in under a second. I even tried a screenshot, but haven't been fast enough.
2) At one point I noticed the RETURN button from the keyboard was replaced with a smiley button. Now it's gone. How can I get it back or to stay?
Also... I love ellipses (three periods in a row). The stock keyboard auto punctuates after one period and puts a space in there which drives me crazy.
Any fixes or suggestions on any of the above things I've noticed?
Edit: Screen Just flashed at 9:30 - Maybe this happens on the half hour or quarter hours. I'll keep watch
Edit2: HAHAHAHAHA... It just did it one minute later. I've got no clue.
Ok, so I figured out how to activate it.
It's sensor related. I have my phone under a lamp. I move my hand over the sensors and I get this notification screen.
I don't mind it, just want to know where it is in the settings or if this is something you can/can't disable.
My guess is that its for when you take your phone out of a pocket the sensor can show you any missed notifications.
For the record, it's missed calls, missed texts, and battery level.
Found my answer in the General Section for the Note 2
The feature I'm describing is the "Quick Glance"
Now... onto figuring out how to get that smiley button back instead of the return!
I know this is an old post but I am so glad I found this. It has been driving me nuts seeing that screen come on and go away. I tried everything to replicate it. It happened 5 times over the last 20 minutes while I was watching a movie so I googled it and found this. Anyways...thank you!

What is this and can I turn it off?

I put PacMan rom on my sisters phone and she brings it back to me and says that it's got this thing on the screen and it won't go away. I've messed around in the settings and can't find out how to turn it off. Anyone know how to? Thanks.
Can't post links since I'm new but I'm not spamming so I spaced out the link so I could post my picture
It's called Halo. Different versions of PacMan may have options in System Settings, but on my version, I was able to get rid of it by:
tap once to make it appear
tap twice, but hold the second tap. Then you drag the blue circle to the red circle with the 'X' and that should close it.

Extremely irritating issue with top of screen

I have been reading the site for years, ever since i rooted my HTC Aria. This will be my first post since I figure people here will most likely know better than anyone else.
My issue has to do with the top of the screen. When i try to touch an icon, or anything near the top of the screen, the status bar will start do drag down. It will not let me touch anything near the top without grabbing the status bar. The phone has not been dropped, and the screen is not cracked. I did a screen test and it registers the touches everywhere without fail. The other issue which i am sure is related is when i try to pull down the status bar it just goes right back up and doesn't stay open. This issue sometimes goes away for a short period after the phone has been on the charger for a while. I hard reset the phone and nothing has changed. Has anyone seen this issue or know of a setting that can be changed? It is the unlocked version from HTC, btw. I forgot to mention, this phone has not been rooted, or modified in any way.

Navbar touch issue

Hello,
Sorry if this has been covered else where. I found stuff that was similar but not quite the same.
I am having an issue with Pixel 2 XL where the touches will not track over the navigation bar. If you tap on the navbar, the touch is forced to the top or bottom depending on if you tap is closer to the top or bottom respectively. If it's pushed to the bottom, it works OK, but taps forced to the top trigger the search bar.
When dragging down, the navbar essentially blocks the drag, then a second tap registers below the bar as you pass over it. Since you're at the end of your drag at this point, you lift your finger and the second tap registers as a button press. This results in accidentally tapping the nav bar buttons when you are just dragging down.
I played with it so much that I found if you get just the right spot you'll, end up with two active tap-spots. If I drag rapidly across the nav bar for like 10-30 seconds, it will return to normal, but the phone gets a bit freezy, and seizes up randomly for 3 to 10 seconds at time. After a while it seems to return to normal.
I have also experienced the "screen freezes for a bit, then suddenly registers 100 taps" issue. I'm not sure if they are related. If anyone has insight into this issue as well, i'd love to hear it.
Is anyone else having these issues? I have a video but I'm not allowed to post outside links.
Thanks very much

I tried to replicate what your talking about. However, I couldn't do it. Maybe because I'm using Nova launcher, which may be a viable option for you. A factory reset might be helpful, however, we all know how much fun that ISN'T! Definitely an interesting issue your having. Then again, I think these devices have a mind of their own at times ?
Thanks for your reply. Forgot to mention, I have tried safe mode and done a factory reset and it did not remove the issue. It seems after a factory reset you are still on Oreo 8.1, so I'm not able to confirm it the issue exists in 8.0. I also have tried Nova Launcher.

Oreo Status Bar Notifications

I have the Note 8 on Verizon. Last week I received a software update to Oreo. Shows on phone as N950USQU3CRC2.
Excuse my terminology if I call something the wrong thing. I will attempt to be as detailed as possible.
I have several apps that put information into the status bar. This is what I call the bar at the top of the phone with the time and battery indicator, etc. I do not have a screen stand by, or lock or anything else. I push the button on the right to cut the screen on and off. All power saving features that I am aware of have been disabled.
Since the software update, some of information that used to stay permanently (persistent notification?) in the status bar would seem to be missing. When I pull down on the status bar to see all the notifications, I see the missing information, but now it seems to be minimized (compacted?). It has down arrows that I have to press to expand the information, then I actually have to open the app to get the information to go back to the status bar. After a short time the notifications disappear from the status bar again and I have to slide it down, expand with the arrow, open the app, etc. over and over.
It is very frustrating to have to do this all day long. Am I missing something? Is there a way to turn this minimization (compacting?) off so that all status bar info shows in the status bar all the time?
Hi I had this problem with one of my apps on Oreo. Go to Settings...Display....Status Bar. Make sure where it says show only 3 recent notifications is turned off. That should should hopefully help
Lrivera76, thanks for your reply. I checked where you referenced and it is turned off already. Interestingly enough, since about noon today, the three notifications I have been fighting with for the past few days have been staying on the status bar. The others that I do not care so much about are still staying minimized or compacted and I have to slide the notifications down to see them, but I do not really care if I see them or not. I began to wonder if the OS had some way of learning that I wanted these 3 left at the top because I kept reopening them over and over? I don't know. I wish there was an obvious way to just turn the minimizing thing off. We can already turn off a notification if we do not want it. What would be the purpose of leaving it on, but not see it. I don't get it.

I use the Navbar app and now with Oreo it stays on my pull-down menu as well. That didn't happen on Nouget. If you haven't tried, clear your cache partition and restart your phone. I was at the point where I was going to do a factory reset due to my battery not lasting the way it did but basically checking all my settings, notifications, displays, etc turning off things that where on when they weren't before saved me from having to do it. Give it a couple of days for the OS to settle if not you can do a factory reset to see if it gets rid of any issues.
