4G Icon always showing in notification bar even when on Wifi? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My 4G/LTE icon in my notification bar is always there, even if I am on wifi. I read that it has something to do with City ID. The free 15 day trial should've ran out a couple of days ago, since I bought it on the 12th.
I had to replace my first HTC M8 because of an unrelated issue, and yet it still had the constant 4G icon. I also had Titanium Backup unistall it.
Is there anyway to disable this **** bloatware? I am seriously fed up with it. Maybe call AT&T and tell them to disable City ID?

if you're rooted, which i'm assuming since you're running titanium backup, i think you could just install a clean custom ROM for sense that has everything beautifully debloated. Although the thing is i'm not sure that problem really has to do with City ID. Happened to me before on previous phones, custom rom or not.

I have no problem on it. everything is ok and using smoothly.

AT&T always keeps their data icon on with WiFi

[Q] Dropped calls since root and removing bloat?

Since rooting my SGS2 last night and freezing some bloat with Titanium Backup I've noticed a few dropped calls. I have a really great 4G signal where this is happening and have never had a problem with this phone or any other T-Mobile phone dropping calls here before.
I have no idea if this is really due to rooting and removing bloat or if it's just a coincidence.
Has anyone else noticed a similar problem?
What did you remove?

With Titanium I froze:
411 & More
AllShare
Backup
Blio
Bonus Apps
Customize Homescreen
Home Screen Tips
Kobo
Lookout
Media Hub
More for Me
Netflix
Pro Apps
Slacker
Social Hub
T-Mobile Mall
T-Mobile TV
TalkBack
TeleNav GPS Navigator
Tethering Manager
Visual Voicemail
Yahoo! Finance
Zinio
Zinio Reader
Man, that list looks pretty safe to me. But I've only had the Nexus One and Nexus S before. This is my first rooted branded phone bloated phone.
I've removed or frozen about half what you have and had no problems. I'm hoping some will (or already has) post a comprehensive list of what can be safely removed.
dumb Q, but what's the difference between freezing and totally removing an app?

Freezing an app disables it and makes it disappear from your app drawer; it remains on your phone's storage. Removing an app removes it completely and frees up storage.
I chose to freeze these apps since I wasn't sure the consequences of deleting them quite yet and recovery could be troublesome until someone releases a good CWM or ODIN system image.

I too felt the same way and froze all bloatware. Phone has more than enough storage to keep them there.

Just rooted last night with Odin..now I'm dropping calls with full bars as well. Anyway around this? Took out battery, sim card, rebooted...nothing seems to be working
It hasn't really happened since I first rooted. I think it may have been a fluke, at least for me.

I had to unfortuantely go back to stock to see if this fixes the issue. Fingers crossed!
My phone dropped a call today while I was outside in my car with 4 bars. Actually the call went in/out, got silent for 10 seconds then dropped.
This is my first Samsung Galaxy S2 phone & I love it. Not sure if they all drop calls in this fashion or if I happen to have a bad phone but its annoying.
History:
-Rooted with Odin on Sunday night...prior to I had no issue of dropped calls
-Unrooted with stock recovery last night
Still dropping calls. Do you guys think I should take my phone back to the store or try to fix it another way? I'm still within my 14 days. I have one from 9/28 with a perfect screen and no other problems.

Rooting your phone in itself should have zero effect on your call settings or dropping calls. Sounds like you need to unroot and swap it out the unit for a new one.

correct technically rooting removing apps would not affect the call quality
it is either a defective unit, or a bad reception issue
T-Mobile Name ID
All the calling related issues everyone his having here are more than likely related to not having T-Mobile Name ID on your device. I'm not sure why but this applications causes dropped calls, freezing and force closing when trying to answer multiple calls if it is not installed on the device. It cannot be frozen nor can it be uninstalled or you will have calling issues. I have tested all the bloatware apps and T-Mobile Name ID is the only one that causes these strange issues with the Galaxy S II.

I haven't touched this app and I am still getting dropped calls. It seemed to start as soon as I had the sim card that came with the phone put in. I was using my old one from my G2X and had no call problems at all. I am rooted by Odin. Stock rom.

wifi and 4g on at same time? or loss of wifi? heres a fix!

okay so I still see some people are having trouble with wifi and 4g being on at the same time or wifi cutting out. Well I had this same problem and it has been fixed for some time. Allgamer I know there is certain threads on this but no one really ever said or posted what the fix was and I have helped a few people out on this in the past few days. so I dont know if you feel cool with this or not but this has been proven to fix the wifi and 4g on at same time issue or wifi cutting out..... Now most people have the t-mobile my account app installed on there phone. I did because i like to keep tabs on where my data is for the month. I had wifi troubles it wouldnt stay connected and the 4g icon would show when i had wifi on so I found a thread that talked about uninstalling the t-mobile my account app. so I tryed it and couldnt believe what i saw thinking this was a crazy idea! So basically I went to titanium backup and froze the app i had wifi on at the time and of course 4g was showing. well as soon as i froze the app the 4g icon went away! i said no way so i had unfroze it just to test and bang 4g came back on with wifi. So basically the t-mobile my account is the culprit it is probably another way for t-mobile to spy on our data ever since i froze this app my wifi stays on when connected and never a problem coming out of sleep it doesnt disconnect. and now when i want to check data for the month i just unfreeze for 2 minutes check it then refreeze it ..... so if u have wifi and data problems it is most likely the t-mobile my account app so uninstall it!!!
Very interesting... I froze it in TB...and you were absolutely right. 4G/H icon went away when I'm on Wi-Fi.

Yea i noticed that like if u do happen to just have wifi on and u actually try to go into the app the 4g symbol comes on too! Its crazy on my old g2x if i tried to go into the app while wifi was on it would not let me go into the app until i cut wifi off and just had data on. Thats not the case with the s2. So maybe it isnt optimized for our phones yet? Definitely needs some fixing to say the least

OGP Keeps automatically enabling location settings

I have no idea what the deal is with this phone right now and its destroying my battery life. I have done everything I know to do with no avail. My phone is CONSTANTLY searching for GPS satellites. If I disable my location settings, they automatically turn back on and resume searching for satellites. Has anyone had this happen? I've done everything but a factory reset.
let me guess, you cant disable data connection too?

Damn.... noticed earlier today it was doing that and looked for anything that could have turned it on. Never thought about the phone app. I ended up restarting my phone. Just dialed a number as a test and sure enough... the gps icon popped up. At least this time it quit on its own...
But why would the gps turn on when I make a phone call?
I seem to remember an updated privacy notification coming in the mail from AT&T a week or so ago. In it i believe there was mention of sharing "anonymous call location data." I think maybe I'll dig up that piece of mail and follow the instructions to "opt out."
Think I'm gonna test this by making a call from one of my kid's lines.

Good to know i'm not the only one. Its a shame because it wasn't doing it last week and now since I work in a metal building with already poor reception, its just shredding my battery life.
I feel sure that I have all apps that request location turned off. This is unrelated to my dialer app, as I only make one or two phone calls in a day.
Root and factory data reset seems to have resolved this for now. Still trying to figure out a cause.

Mine does it when I make or receive a call. If it can't get a gps lock then it keeps re-trying.
I think at&t pushed something to the phone that started it doing this and I need it to stop.

As of today, it's not consistently turning on as it was yesterday but it for sure it turning on every time there is a phone call or a text message.
Was there any sort of update anyone is aware of? Maybe a system app was updated and caused this problem like this shows

So I realized that I recently turned OFF the wifi & mobile networks option inside of the Location settings a few days ago. I turned that back on and it does NOT do it any longer.
I also got on a chat with at&t tech support. He states they didnt have any other reports of this issue and nothing released recently should do this. He also mentioned that E911 uses the gps for location when you call 911. (I knew this.)
In any event, I asked him to open a case with engineering because I don't want it to kill my battery if I make or take a call while in a bldg.
Anyone seeing this should contact customer support to file a "complaint" so it is logged and gets attention.
Anyone seen this on another phone that may be in use in their house?

Thanks for the tip.
This just hit me mid week too, I'm trying the above solution.
One piece exists!
Carrieriq people! I don't know much about these phones, but have been learning slowly. I have the same issue, however I discovered carrieriq wake lock last week, and it makes me want to change to Verizon. Now I'm not sure, but I have that wake lock while the GPS is tweaking out. So I'm guessing that's what it is. I had to register just to post this, and I wish there was a way to get rid of it. I live in a Grey area, and prefer not to have all my calls and texts stored in a server for 60 days or whatever they claim to store the Information.
Same issue started 2 days back. Hope to find any resolution

Damn carrierIQ... you are absolutely right. Installed one of those checker apps and its on there. (One of the downsides to not having a custom ROM.) But to have it really fire up like this, they must have flipped the switch on gathering "anonymous call location data" as was mentioned in a recent update to the privacy policy.
Installed Logging TestApp from an xda member ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110) and then the $1 key from the app store. Went thru the removal process and it no longer kicks on when I make a call.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person experiencing this. Makes me feel better about the situation. Carrieriq has apparently been around for quote some time, however I hadn't heard of it because I was on am extended vacation. When I found out about it last week or whenever it was I did a lot of research on it. But a couple days ago when my GPS kept turning on out of nowhere while I had it off I got paranoid, and was scared they had me under investigation or something. If anyone else tries reggae Smith suggestion and is able to get rid of carrieriq. On this phone please post and let us know. I'm sure most of us out there don't want AT&T saving our texts and call history. Your browser history, and all that. Its a key logger that saves EVERYTHING that you do on your phone. At least that's my grasp on it. I'm wondering if getting rid of it the way reggie did even really delete it though. Is it possible to even get rid of it without flashing a custom room? Just because we may be able to get some peace of mind by not seeing the wake lock, is it really gone? I have only had Android for about 3 months, and managed to work from a atrix 2, to having 2 s3, one with severe wake lock issues. Drain my whole zero lemon battery overnight, to this ogp, which I dig. So this phone works great and one day carrier iq for 13 hours one day, so my friend Google gave me some insight, and bam, here we are. I have so many questions, but the capcha or whatever from my phone is irritating, so I will refrain from asking so many questions in different threads, that people will think I'm spamming. In the words of the great William currington "God is great, beer is good, and *****es are crazy!"
Anybody found any solution for this? There were some Google app updates hangout search may be forcing

I can confirm that this 1 dollar app has fixed the problem on my phone as well. E980.
Before trying that i tried to manually remove it, i was able to find two library files @ "/system/lib/" 1 - libiq_client.so && 2 - libiq_service.so
However I was unable to find the associated binary. I found a service lost the name. I installed cwm recovery, and then attempted to remove the library's at the risk of bricking, to invoke a app crash log and figure out where this :crying: binary was located. I added .bak to the end of the library names, and rebooted. I was greeted with a nice message "The android system has stopped working.", when I got to the homescreen, and then again when I attempted to make a call. But the phone worked fine and gps did not kick attempt to search. So I went and integrated the kernel logs and it showed android.iqd as the module that crashed, and an associated service. I couldn't find a full path to the binary and I don't know much about the android kernel yet, I'm only on my 2nd day being rooted on my 1st android device. If anyone could help me investigate this and figure out where the binary is located, and upload it I would be a very happy camper.
TLDR - After using Logging Test app and running remove IQ, i can rename or remove the library files with no issues! But I would still like to know more about the files/services associated.
Double post. Today my phone CIQ re-enabled itself, and started throwing the app crash message again "Android System Has Stopped Working.", because I have my CIQ library files re-named. Also note that it seems that I cannot RECEIVE text messages with these CIQ library files re-named. So DO NOT rename them.
Here is a link to the system_app_crash generated by renaming the library files.

I a very in-experienced android user, I need help finding where "com.carrieriq.iqagent.client.IQClient" is located, and where it is located in the phones startup. In linux there is RCXX.d files that contain startup and shut down procedures.
I live in the grey area so this GPS **** is driving me nuts. - THANKSh

[Q] How to turn off pesky notification sound...started happening suddenly

I'm a long-time note 2 user and usually have no problem with settings. Out of
nowhere, my Note 2 started sounding a notification tone (first tone in the list)
and I haven't found a way to disable that notification. I think it's related to a secondary email
account... yahoo or Outlook perhaps. Tried the obvious options to turn notifications
off/on but nothing has worked. This thing is waking me up at all hours and disturbing
my lifestyle in general. The only way I've found to turn off the continuous sounding of the tone is to touch the top notification bar. Such a hassle. Any real suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.
This is bull$4!* I agree
This is bad enough to make me want to switch to an iPhone.
This has got to get fixed.

Go into the settings for the app that is giving you the notification and change it there.

Very not nice response, perhaps if you understood it would be different

If only that were possible. With Android 4.3 the notification is for leaving and rejoining the 4Glte coverage area. For those of us that live on the edge of 4G lte coverage it makes for a long annoying night. I have emergency notifications that I DO need at night, but not the damn network change every 5 minutes.

Perhaps you could look up "hyperbole." Or not, you could just continue to send rude responses.

I don't think he was being rude. I think he is saying that if it makes you happy to move to an iPhone then go for it. It's your choice. No need to take it offensively ..good day to you.
UPDATE from SPRINT
I talked to Sprint. They have confirmed that many ppl are complaining about the constant "upbeep" and "downbeep" tones. I understand it is not just 4Glte/CDMS coverage change, but also Wifi and Bluetooth availability. They say Samsung is aware of the unpopularity of the issue and will have a patched version out very soon.
I have resorted to disabling 4Glte all the time and disabling WiFi and Bluetooth at night. this seems to be a reasonable short term work around.
Thanks for reading.
Sean
I've never had any notification tone for network/wifi mode changes. I'm not sure why the stock rooted MK4 ROM wouldn't have the same issue but it doesn't or this forum would be full of angry people. I assume you guys are on the stock unrooted MK4 Jellybean ROM? If so, I'm glad I told my wife not to allow the update on her Note 2. I'm currently on stock rooted MK4 ROM and have never had this type of notification. But I would hate it also.
With this all being said, time for you guys to visit the Note 2 Toolkit thread and get rooted! Just one more reason why people prefer to root their devices.

Once rooted you will need to ask ROM devs for help in removing the network notifications. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this with Root Explorer file manager app but you must be rooted to gain access to the file system. This is my only advice because I'm pretty sure an update will not come soon enough for you guys. Updates come from Samsung then Sprint sits on it for testing etc, then Sprint pushes it OTA. You can root and fix the issue in a few minutes or wait and pray for an update.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. And Sean, thanks for talking to Sprint about this matter...I'm sure that all the suggestions here will help others with the same kind of issue I've been experiencing. For me, it's a wait and see kind of thing in that whatever the change in settings I make, it could take an entire day or even more to verify success in shutting down this maddening interruption.
There have been days when, because of a setting I changed, my phone would not ring at all when a call was coming in even though the ringer volume setting was at 100 percent loudness.
The good news for me is that as of this morning, I had an uninterrupted night's sleep last night which, obviously, could mean that I've finally stumbled into a solution. But I am reserving the 'Mission Accomplished' party for when I am absolutely sure my settings are the way they should be. I hate big let-downs, especially when they follow great expectations and celebrations of euphoria.
BTW, the latest changes I made were done inside Facebook's notifications preferences. It seems the Facebook crew are on a mission to keep its members fully involved in troubleshooting the 'traps' they set for us. Kinda reminds me of Hunger Games.
Fingers crossed now...maybe I'll have another full-night's sleep, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
Thanks again to all who pitched in their $000.02000. I'll update here any more results that might be helpful.

Have to admit that rooting is very tempting...thing is, I live in a new area and have no 'guru' type friends here and I'd be concerned that I'd get myself in a corner and not be able to get out. I just don't know enough about rooting to trust myself with doing it to my only smartphone. For instance, does rooting wipe all data completely? I'd have to back up everything I want to keep? And how would I do that backup. Will the memory be re-formatted? How do I know which apps work and which ones don't work on a rooted phone?
Yeah, you guessed it...I'm an old guy...66...and fairly savvy with being a PC/smartphone user...but I haven't studied coding since the mid-eighties and don't remember what I learned about it then. Still, I'm intrigued with rooting my Note 2. Maybe someday.

DrDubner, the Rooting Toolkit I linked to above is very simple and straight forward to use and it has very clear and easy to understand instructions within the user interface. Basically if you can read you can root your phone with ease. Also there is no need to backup anything on you phone or sd card (although it's always advisable just in case) because the root process does not change, delete, wipe, or alter anything other than enabling root permissions on your phone and flashing an insecure boot image & custom recovery in which you do not have to ever use and will not be visible upon normal day to day usage.
BUT with this being said, I would highly recommend that you do some more homework FIRST and find out exactly which app or system process/app that is triggering the notifications BEFORE rooting your phone. It may turn out to be something that can be fixed without rooting your phone and either way you go about this, you need to know the exact cause of the notifications before doing anything.
Hopefully you can get more specific info about your notifications and post them here for others to help you better. Like I said, I've never had the network notifications that you described... on any ROM stock or custom. Perhaps it's not network notifications and mabye it's a system app or user installed app that is triggering these notifications? Keep us posted so we can get to the bottom of this issue much faster than Samsung/Sprint patch update that may never come.
Yeah I've never heard of this problem. Stock 4.3 and my phone never beeps for coverage issues. Idk to me it sounds like there's an app set up to continue reminding you of an unread notification. Like the Messages app reminder feature. Plus he did say taping on the notification bar stops it so that means one of those notifications on the dropdown is the culprit and when you tap on the bar it resets your notification (no blinking or sounds). Maybe it's time for a factory reset.

I agree. It does sond like a repeat notification. The notification pull down should give you a clear indication of which app is giving you the notification. Double check notification settings within each suspect app itself. If you can't find it that way then uninstall suspect apps one at a time until you find the culprit. Facebook and other social apps would be a good place to start. Also check Sprint visual voice mail and your messaging notification settings. You might be surprised at the simple cause of this.

Weird location service issue

So just got my G2 the other day and noticed whenever im in LTE area my weather widget will not update and gps doesnt hardly work either. Also when using browser, at the bottom of google it will say location unknown. When i try to update my weather widget it will fail and pop up a black box at the bottom of screne saying location services temporarily unavailable. When i go out of LTE back into 3G all of those things work just fine. Gps locates fast, weather widget updates, and in google it will show my precise location. Told sprint about this, guy at store gave me a new phone thinking it was a problem with the phone. Got the new phone home into LTE and exact same issue. 3G everything is fine. Called sprint dude and he told me i would have to call tech support. So, im wondering if this has happened to anyone else and is there a fix. Really dont know what else to do and really dont feal like dealing with sprint doofs not understanding what im talking about asking me if ive turned on location access. Lol. Ive seen posts about dialer codes and all that but am too nervous to mess something up when i dont quite understand what the issue could even be. So im calling tech support right now. You guys! Lol. Any help would be great. Thanks
