Software on the Wiki

Hi,
There seems to be a lot on the wiki regarding the handsets, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on software for the handsets.
There's the "Must have tools" page, but I personally would appreciate a page listing software by category.
I am therefore proposing to produce a page called "Software" with a list of categories such as
Diary/Calendar
Contacts
File Managers
Games
GUI Enhancement
Instant Messaging/Chat
System Tools
Today
etc.....
Then, each of these pages would have a list of sub categories with software titles listed underneath, so for example "Instant Messaging" would have IM+, Skype, Pocket IRC etc... under it and each of these would then have it's own page on which to include features, details of compatibility with handsets and WM versions and links with where to get them from (possibly even links to related forum topics).
Obviously I will start from my Wizard/Hemes and the software I have used, so I shall apologise for that in advance, but if I start adding this will anyone complain?
Or would it be appreciated?
Any thoughts, comments or ideas (and things I have overlooked, like this existing) are appreciated.

One question for you would be whether the software section would be a cross device section or under a specific device eg Hermes or Wizard?

Cross device, totally.
The way I look at it is that most of the software is written to work on "Any" WM device so it should therefore be written generically. I'd then try to include a compatibility list of "This software is confirmed (not) working on..." for people to add their devices to as well as notes on how to get it working if their may be trouble.
For example, Skype works on most, but not so well on a Hermes unless you use the beta.
Just wish I knew more about the advanced features on the wiki software xda-devs uses....
Had a play the other day and at least one other person has linked something into it so far...
Games and Emulators page.
Guess we will see how it goes....
I'd love to help, but I'm mainly a MediaWiki guy, is there a list of basic editing procedures and stuff for the software xda-developer wiki uses?

Guys and gals, I've just finished migrating my latest articles & Bibles from the last ~5 months into the Wiki (so far, I haven't had the time to do this).
VERY important: I use my own scripts to convert my HTML-based articles to PhpWiki (also using other, Web-based PhpWiki converters). Unfortunately, there're some constructs that I just can't convert (and don't have the time to manually adjust ALL the articles - remember, there are hundreds of them); for example, consequent rows separated by only one line feed. (With them, the rows aren't rendered separated.)
If you encounter cases like this and would like to read the original instead,
1. you can find almost all these articles in the General forum ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=256 ) here; you can easily find them by just entering a, say, sentence to search for from my Wiki article, only searching for my nick and the General forum in the Advanced Search engine ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php )
2. at the bottom of many of my articles, there's a "Cross-posted to" section. Just click the XDA-Devs link in there.
3. alternatively, you can also search my blog ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ )
I do hope you'll find my articles useful

Wow.... GREAT WORK! Nice to see all the "FAQ" stuff in one place. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disabling Beep Noise
Thank you so much for the FAQ, one question though, I tried to disable the beep sound when initiating a call and followed the steps, apparently that still didn't disable the beep noise.
Any suggestions?
Found it
After playing around with the registry, I finally found how to make the beep go away when initializing a call.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\CallStart\InitVol set to 0. At default it should be set to 2.

[Q] Where to start the development from basics?

I just got the WP7 SDK, was looking to make some very simply and basic apps. Can anyone link me to some website or forum where I can get some coding help or some tutorial which guides from the very basics? I found a few articles but those weren't from the basics at all, I got stuck at a number of places while following it.

Here ya go
I’d recommend just trying to write a really simple app first – just something that has a bit of text, maybe some pictures, on screen and lets you tap some things. If you haven’t chosen between using Visual Basic or C# as the language to learn yet I would choose C# as it’s more popular, and also used more in industry.
This seems to be a good link for beginners as it has lots of videos – don’t know whether it’s the right level for you though but give it a go. It’s not the latest version of wp7, but the techniques haven’t changed much – just a few new things added.

I found this that’s an example of a complete ‘first’ application for wp7 mango
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg680270(v=pandp.11).aspx
This is a fantastic link once you’ve written your first simple app as it has an example of how to do everything on windows phone (tiles, photos, play music, etc. etc.…)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff431744(v=vs.92).aspx
There’s lots of tutorials out on the web if you search. You also need to know this link if you don’t already as it’s the kind of front page for wp7 development:
http://create.msdn.com/
Here’s lot of videos for using the software expression blend. You don’t need to learn expression blend at first as visual studio does everything – but if you do you can make your apps looks beautiful really easily, and it make some parts of wp7 development (the ‘XAML’) a lot easier to write than using Visual Studio.

Hope that helps,

FNG With Questions about ROMS For Open Mobile PR

So as the title states, I'm not only new to the forum, but to the whole world of stock/custom ROMs, and about 95% of the vernacular that appears in your typical conversations.
Before opening this thread, I did read a few others on the subject of Open Mobile users successfully using customized ROMs of other carriers, but with the loss of 3G and/or MMS. (By the way, the feature that shows similar threads under the title box- genius.) I, too, have fallen into that unfortunate category, but with a stock ROM belonging to Metro PCS. It was completely unintentional, the changeover.
After the first 10 minutes of freaking the out, I got my act together and found this forum, among others with not a single solution to my problem, or that of other users with a situation similar to mine.
I would simply like to know if anyone has been able to fix this problem.
As proof I've check other threads,
-This one is for an HTC Hero and in page 2, post #11, someone offers a possible solution, but the person referred to doesn't respond. And I can't really understand what it says.
-This one offers three posts of nothingness.
-This oneseems to have a user inventing a Battleship/Bingo hybrid with all them numbers and less-than-average use of periods.
I appreciate any help anyone offers. And if I posted this in the wrong section, feel free to move it as needed.
Again, thanks.
As a follow-up, today I realized that I could access the Play Store by using 3G only. I could also browse/download apps and use apps that require internet/data connections, such as Words with Friends and Draw Something.
Basically, all I lack now it internet access (I was able to download another browser even just to make sure it wasn't the original one that was FUBAR) and MMS capability (I can receive pictures, but not 100%; more like 90%).
Any thoughts or suggestions?
