[Q] New One M8 user - Couple of questions - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm a new HTC One M8 (and Android) user. I have previously owned only Apple devices for the past 3 or so years, and never owned an Android device.
I have a couple of questions to do with the M8 and hoping you guys can help.
1. On iOS, I use Activator on my jailbroken iPhone, specially, to turn off some features when I join any WiFi network, and turn them off when I leave WiFi. Is there anything available for Android, that will allow me to trigger events when joining/leaving WiFi? (I am not able to root, this is a work phone). I specifically want to disable bluetooth, cellular data, and LTE when joining WiFi, and re-enable them when leaving.
2. I have changed my default location to my hometown in the HTC weather app, as I don't allow my phones to track my location. The weather app shows my home town, on the home screen weather/clock widget. However, on the lock screen widget, it just says 'Weather Unavailable'. Anyone know how I can fix that?
3. Is there a way to view battery usage time per app? At present I can only see how much percentage each app has used, and how long the phone has been on in total. Ideally, I would like to know standby time and usage time.
Thanks!

Simulate tap on HTC "network" widget

Hello all,
I'm trying to control the "on/off" state of mobile data via my own application and while I know of APNDroid, I find it unreliable with my HTC Desire using the 2.2 OTA update (unrooted). It works two or three times, but once the screen has been turned off for quite a while, it no longer works.
However, tapping on the widget from HTC always works and so I was wondering if there is a way to simulate the tap on the widget.
For instance, I thought about sending an intent to the widget. But I'm not sure where to start as I have no idea what the name of that intent could be.
Does anyone have any clues as to where to start looking?
Thanks in advance.
Tasker is an excellent app and the latest beta of it now supports turning on and off mobile data using this toggle.
Hello,
I know about Tasker and am currently evaluating it.
It has two different tasks to control the mobile data, one internal (Mobile Data) and one using APNDroid (Mobile Data APN).
The former does not to work at all, while the latter only works until the screen turns off for more than 5 minutes.
Hence the reason why I'm looking for alternatives while waiting for replies on the Tasker groups.
You are saying that the latest beta supports turning on/off "using this toggle". What toggle are you talking about? Is that the HTC widget mobile data toggle?
If yes, how do I control it via Tasker? I did not find anything obvious.
Regards
i use switch pro widget and love it
I use switch pro, but some people claim its an APN renamer which its not (unless you tell it to be in the settings)
However it is possible to control htc's data connection as CM has built it into his modified power control widget (see CM6 roms).
As to the exact modification, I don't know as I have never taken said widget appart to see what he told it to do.
Supposing SwitchPro works ok, which I can not confirm as there is no demo version, how would you control it from Tasker?

[Q] High Data Usage Problem (Tilt 2 on ATT)

Hey all, I did not have much luck using the search. Tried to find other people who have had this problem.
We have 4 ATT Tilt 2 phones in my department. All with the same rom, radio, settings, etc. The difference in the phones is that 2 of them were purchased about a year earlier than the other 2.
*PROBLEM* TWO of the phones (the newer purchased Tilt 2's) we are getting alerts for high data usage from ATT. Looked at the ATT data logs, sure enough they have high data usage, large amounts at odd times. like 20mb - 100+mb transfers in the late night early morning, during the day. Not good, it is all adding up quick with no suspect in sight. The 2 users with this problem, use the phone data less than I do for day to day tasks and I am way under the alert limit, its not something they are causing---some of these data periods are while the user is ASLEEP (and no, we do NOT use MS myphone sync). Its got to be a phone software or software compatibility with the newer Tilt 2 hardware or something. I tried a couple different ROMS, same problem. Right now we are all on Energy.RHODIUM.21684.Sense2.5.Cookie.sencity.Nov.08
Radio: 4.49.25.77 (best signal in our area) Michigan
Please help. Thanks to anybody who can provide some guidance.
MOD feel free to close this thread since nobody seems to be able to help, I will try the ROM Devel thread instead.
what are your settings for weather , mail and Google locations services ?
I set all my mail to check once a day, and manually update it as needed, same for weather...also have you turn off any other automatic services ...

Keep in mind its the same for all 4 phones: weather updates every hr, mail every 5 mins (all text,no pictures), location serv on.

Okay first off i am sure you can monitor your data service, so pick a start time and turn your mail/weather setting to once a day, turn off location service , watch it for 24 hr's then only change the location setting back on for the next 24 hrs leaving the mail and weather the same...compare the results...if it is still using high data, then flash a stock rom...if the usage is still high then i suspect it is a hardware issue..just a guess but it kind sounds like it..
There was a PPC "virus" that was passed around not long ago where the program that was installed contained an executable that would dial long-distance numbers late at night. Try comparing the list of installed programs on the affected devices to the stable devices. Most likely, this sounds like a user generated issue. Feel free to post the list of installed applications here. I will try them out if/when I can find them.
I haven't used it before but have seen it recommended several times on this site...SPB Wireless Monitor (http://www.spb.com/pocketpc-software/wirelessmonitor/) should be able to tell you what's using the data on your phones.
I wonder if this has anything to do with it (SEEING THAT BOTH OF OUR USERS WITH THE PROBLEM WERE LINKED TO YAHOO MAIL ACCOUNTS! And not the rest of us)

Is anyone juggling both Android and WP7?

I'm asking since I'm gonna be picking up a Dell Venue Pro (again) I been using Android for a while and I enjoy it. The thing I love the most is the integration with gmail and calendars. Being able to open my calendar on my Macbook and for it to automatically update my calendar on my Droid Pro is convenient. From what I remember, WP7 should sync up the calendar with your gmail account but I'm wondering if theres anyone out there that is able to balance using both phones? For example, I want to be able to write down notes on one phone and for somehow that carry over to my Dell Venue Pro. There was a program called AK Notepad for Android and whatever notes I'd write down on my Droid Pro, I'd be able to access on my Nexus One.
I still carry around my Nexus One without SIM...just because Android allows me to do many things I still cannot with my Optimus 7... so for now, at least until Mango update, I will be carrying two phones.
I have several android devices to play with but still carry my surround as my every day phone. I like both. As to having full cloud based sharing on multiple platforms? I don't think they play that nice quite yet

Apparently Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/) is almost ready for Windows Phone 7, which should allow you to create/access notes on pretty much every platform out there.
Try using cloud based apps. It's pretty easy between iPhone and Android, or Android and Android.
It's not that easy with WP7 because we don't have too many apps right now. Looking forward to it!
Juggling between a samsung focus and hopefully in a few hours a galaxy s2. Until mango, the galaxy s2 will be my main phone tho
I have both.
Actually the fact that many users use both speaks for itself....
Anyway I have both of them and ditched WP7 because carrying two devices to do the same thing is kinda nonsense.
There's nothing WP7 does Android can't do
However there are tons of things Android does while WP7 just can't.
WP7 may be very appealing in some scenarios.
Just write your notes in the gmail calendar and sync it on both devices, that's what I do, works like a charm.

That's actually so simple.
Plus on Android you can send to calendar notes from Note Everything
I also have my wildfire without sim and my htc trophy. I don't now if i will keep the trophy. I am giving it some time to convince me. I am carrying 2 phones for now. One of the most annoying things in windows phone 7 is that the wifi sleeps when the screen is off, so nothing that syncs (gmail, gtalk, calendar, etc)...syncs! Microsoft says its "by design", well i don't like it. Maybe after the Mango update.

I'm not a big wifi user but the same thing happens with bluetooth and it's so disgustingly annoying!! I will be streaming music to my car radio using bluetooth and when a song ends while the screen is off, the phone will automatically disconnect the bluetooth connection and I have to go back to settings and reconnect it and why is bluetooth always searching and discoverable??? What, they couldn't add another slider to switch discovery mode on and off so I don't have to see 50 headsets on my list??
I'm not a power user so i don't need all the fancy stuff Android can do. WP7 is great for me as I mainly use exchange and office, but it's the stupid little details that get you frustrated!

OneNote Exists for WP7 and you can view it in a browser. EverNote has too many restrictions for how much data you can transfer, and it requires yet another account creation (ugh!).
Android phones usually come with a memo app (my Vibrant has it), and they typically allow you to send notes via SMS/MMS, Email, etc.
I carry both an HD7 and a Vibrant with Active SIMs in them everywhere. I put my Unlimited Data SIM in my HD7 when I got it because of Zune Pass, but I'm about to switch it back to my Vibrant.
Audio Quality on the Vibrant is 200% better than on the HD7. You basically need headsets with the HD7. The Vibrant's sound can fill a decent sized room. Call and Speaker Phone quality ... the comparison is the same. Vibrant is wildly superior. It's like comparing a surround sound system to a pocket radio...
The HD7 is useless as a phone comapred to the Vibrant. The signal is consistently 2 bars lower and call quality is more volatile. I feel like I'm in the middle of New York on an AT&T iPhone 4 when I'm on the HD7. The Vibrant performs flawlessly.
The HD7 is only useful as a PMP IF you have a decent pair of headsets or a BT Jabra device with FM transmitter in your car (like I do).
The terrible speaker and cell radio in this thing is already enough to relegate it to backup status, but there is the issue of Apps and Services integration.
Android has better apps. After heavy use of both phones. The Android versions perform better and are more stable as well. Twitter for WP7 (even Birdsong) and Twitter for Android... the Android version runs circles around it. Same for Facebook. LinkedIn doesn't exist for WP7.
No decent IM Applications. Half-baked MMS. Can't send Videos off the device via MMS or Email.
A phone can be made better (maybe the DVP has better speakers than the HD7, and a better radio with better data speeds and call quality), but the OS is half-baked and puts way too many limitations on what you, or any app can do. This means there is a definite roadblock IRT functionality that anyone can hit on WP7 that isn't possible on some other platforms.
In addition to that, there are a ton of applications that are missing from the market, and those that are coming (that matter) won't be here for another 6 months or so.
If I was "upgrading" from a dumb/feature phone it probably wouldn't be an issue. But coming from WM/Android/WebOS and having used iPhones more than enough... It's unacceptable as a daily driver.
It has all the detriments of an AT&T iPhone in New York (poor reception/call quality/wildly flunctuating signal strength that never goes above 3 bars even standing under a 3G tower) with none of the benefits (High Quality Apps, Services Integration, Top Apps). In addition to that, the Audio Quality makes it hit and miss even as a ZuneHD replacement, and the Codec Support is just not cute compared to something like a Galaxy S device. There is no DLNA capability, either. Battery Life is not better than an iOS/Android device, so that's not an advantage.
Disclaimer: Some of these issues (in particular the reception/call quality problems) may be an issue with the phone and not the OS itself - but T-Mobile only sells one WP7 device in carrier stores so take that for what it's worth. One other person I know has an HD7 and when I asked him how he likes it he responded (I'm quoting him word for work...) "The call quality is ****, but it's okay I guess." So I'm pretty sure it's not due to having a lemon device

I don't use BT much but I understand the frustration, however the entire platform has been launched under the premise that it's not static or even completed as far as I understand. And given the track record of how MS usually deliver products (a main product and then many "hotfixes" and service packs) I expect most of these small things will be fixed in time.
Still annoying that they manage to miss such apparent things.

Android does this as well, that's why some applications (like Trillian for Andorid) have a setting to keep WiFi on when the phone sleeps.
I actually prefer it that way. If the phone is charging the WiFi stays on, however. They do it to conserve battery life, and that was a good decision...

Well atleast the option is there unlike in Microfot's product.
BTW, in the areas where you might have a weak cellular data signal havung your phone connected to a Wi-Fi access point is morr power efficient netting better battery life.
Kind of surprised at the number of people with dual phones. I have a Surround and an Inspire 4G. Before I upgraded to Gingerbread, the Inspire 4G was just so damned choppy, I couldn't really use it for long before I was ready to throw it. Now, it is my primary phone. My Surround has so-so build quality and much more limited functionality. I certainly wish for turn-by-turn directions via Bing maps. NoDo has made it much more fun to use as a communication tool with C&P, and it's smooth as can be. If my work would get the Exchange server up and running instead of using a third party host, I could see it being my primary phone. Until then, its all Android.

with an HD7 that would be everywhere, becuase the radio is so terrible it can never go above 3 bars even if I'm standing under an HSPA+ radio. My Vibrant's radio is 100% better.
I cannot use the HD7 as a phone, it's just too terrible. I only use it to play music these days and after I ETF one of these lines in a month or two I'll probably think hard about getting rid of it - probably just enough to cover the ETF fee, of a bit less than that...

N5100 has the option in Settings/Date and time - Automatically sync date and time, don't know about N5110 - maybe having no 3G it needs third party NTP client? It would be somewhat logical - smartphones sync time with mobile operator, no 3G no operator for N5110
Sent from my GT-N5100 using xda premium
this sucks, looks like an android limitation. there are clock syncing apps around but it requires root. too bad.

Not a WiFi issue (as a previouos post suggested) and possibly not even an Android issue. My old WiFI-only HTC Flyer updates to local time just fine by reading the location from the WiFi network. And unless this is some HTC Sense specific feature, it should be inherent in Android.
I noticed this too on my last business trip to a different time zone. Its disappointed. Really, Android is mature enough that we should be past the point of obvious missing features like this. Either Google or Samsung dropped the ball here. Its not a big deal, of course, just an annoying and silly feature to be missing.

somewhere on the web I've seen official reply from Google to one of the devs, regarding why time sync is not possible without root: "security reasons", so good or bad, it is their conscious choice
it's true that it's not a very big deal since you can set the time manually.
but just to share my story why this caught my attention:
my GF bought an ipad mini and i made her return it and get a note 8.0 instead since it has great productivity apps pre-installed and the usefulness of the s-pen is great with work related functions. So after the first boot up, the first thing she noticed is that the date and time did not sync automatically considering it's already connected to the web and there is no option to sync it. this is not a good first impression because the ipad synced the time ok. this is just a step back and somewhat embarassing for me considering how much i preach to her how good android is.
the good news is she is starting to like the tablet and it seems like she got over it now lol. i just wished google will make it so that their own OS can natively set the time from the internet. if they think that third party apps are security risks, then why not do it within the system itself?
When I first set mine up, it did get date and time automagically.
Over the weekend, it crashed in an odd way and when I got it to talk to me again, it had
- chosen not to display the network it was connected to, despite being connected and on the intertubes
- decided it was December of 2012
I manually set the time to 'pretty close,' then found an ntp client.
Not sure at all what was going on there. I think there's an ntp client baked in but that it can be gorked under some circumstances.
Since rooting this device is easy peasy and gives you access to things like Titanium as well as ntp clients that can synch, my vote is "install framaroot and root away"
But my vote for any device I own is "root away"

Weather App Problems

I currently am trying to use two weather apps on my Z1 that don't work properly, a Zooper Widget Pro widget and Weatherback . Both of these apps work as expected on my Nexus 7, but the locations seem to be off on my Z1. I do NOT have a data plan on my phone (but the Nexus obviously doesn't either). Does anyone have any suggestions for which settings I should check? My regular weather apps run perfectly on my Z1.
Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by 'locations seem to be off'? Is the weather not loading, or do you get weather for a different location? Does it not work for auto and manual location, or just auto, (try a manual location if you haven't yet). I had a similar problem that turned out to be caused by not having Gapps installed, since there's some service that Gapps provides that you need yo have an alternative for.

Thanks for replying.
I've entered my location manually in Weatherback. It seems to work better. "World Weather Online" seems the most accurate in Minneapolis. I will experiment with the other two.
I also made a formula change in Zooper Widget Pro that seems illogical if the phone location is the issue. If I simply enter "#LLOC#" for the location command I get odd locations, one 100 miles away and one nearly 1500 miles away (Only the same 2, Tomah, WI and Tonopah, NV). However, I entered a variation of the following formula in all the weather related items: "$#LLOC#!=#LLOC#?****:#W0MAXN# / #W1MINN#$", which returns "68 / 54", as an example. This has been returning the correct local weather for the last few hours. Could be a fluke, but I've never gone even an hour in my house without an incorrect reading. I definitely have no idea why this works.
***Hmmm. Just as I finished the last paragraph I noticed that my location in Zooper is again incorrect. The weather temps, both predicted and current, are correct, as is the condition (Cloudy). Totally flummoxed by this.
Re: GAPPS. In Weatherback I have occasionally gotten a crash message related to GAPPS when altering the settings. I'm assuming this indicates that GAPPS is installed.
Any additional thoughts will be appreciated.

Don't know much technical stuff, but see the last few posts of crdroid thread, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/rom-crdroid-android-t3117940), for the answer I got from someone who seems to know about it. Maybe it applies to your situation.
