I am currently running CyanogenMod 11 (M3) for t-mobile. I really need help fixing my camera. I was having problems with my camera earlier but now it is constantly force closing. Just recently the camera updated to Google camera and I was hoping the force would not occur anymore, but now it's even worse. If any ideas how to fix PLEASE tell me because I have many needs for the camera. This how the problem occurs: I try to take a picture and it will take it then it will freeze and I have to kill the app. Then I try to restart the app but I get an "Camera error: cannot connect to the camera." The problem was really bad after I flashed the ROM so I deleted that camera and flashed a "better" one. I try to use the other features of this updated Google camera but none of them work such as: lens blur, panorama or photo sphere . I would really love having these features working or even taking regular pictures without any force closes. I have to use the camera everyday so please help as soon as possible. Please anyone help me solve this problem!!!! (Current Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999)
Thanks for the help in advance!!

First thing I'd do is make a nandroid backup, then factory reset. If it fixes it then some data you had was causing the issue.
Next thing to try is copy the cameradata folder from a stock rom to yours. Reboot and test.
If that doesnt help i would then Odin flash stock/root66 firmware and factory reset. Then test the camera. If its still not working it may be hardware. If it works, you can be certain its software/firmware related. No sense in more troubleshooting if you determine its hardware related.
If it works on stock but not after a clean rom flash, the rom is likely the problem. Search its thread for similar issues.
Good luck!

The reset didn't work...I', trying to fix this camera https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.GoogleCamera
This camera keeps freezing and then I have to end the task. After I end the task and try to go back to camera I get an "Camera error: Can't connect to camera." The lens blur and photo sphere and panorama are not working. Also, the camera is not taking the full screen when in rear facing camera but when I change to front facing the size becomes even smaller. Any idea how I can fix these problems? I am getting frustrated
me too!!

I figured it out...it was a ROM problem. I flashed liquid smooth 4.4.2 and it worked perfectly.

Ok, then, that issue would be fixed if I flash the latest nightly CM 11 Rom??

It is a possibility, you can try and see. I flashed a completely different ROM.

My T999V S3 is on 4.1.2 Stock running Faux's latest kernel.
I load up my camera, it stalls for a few seconds and then drops the error window, "Camera Failed".
How can I get my camera back and working?
I've gone into applications and cleared the camera data but that did not work, I also stopped the camera service in "running" applications but no luck there. These were from searching for other's who've had the same issue on XDA. Not sure if the solutions were completely relevant but I tried anyways.

Work fine with stock kernel? the modules with that kernel might be incompatible or missing.

Yep, I think I'll flash back to stock and see if that fixes things.
been having same problem recently. its weird cause i have 2 s3s and they both had the same problem the SAME time.
had to wipe completly and installed new rom than it went away. idk what happened. i didnt go anything for it to stop.
I had a perfectly working Galaxy Nexus running CM10.x, which I updated to a CM11 nightly. This worked great for a week or so and then the camera and gallery started FCing. After several resets, restores, newer/older nightly installs, nothing changed. Tried all possible combinations of new/old Gapps, but still no luck. I tried different ROMs - PA, stock 4.3 and some others, but nope. I even tried Ubuntu Touch and even that couldn't access the camera. This is when I was pretty convinced that the camera module itself must have died.
My questions:
What killed the camera? Is it possible that a bad ROM could have done it?
Is it possible to fix this via software?
I can try and get it repaired locally, but I just want to know if anything can be done at home.
Thanks.

A ROM wouldnt just kill the camera over time. It would have not worked right after the ROM was installed. So I doubt it was a ROM. I would do a full reset. Not just a normal factory reset but flash the factory image and see if it fixes it. If it doesn't then most likely it's a hardware issue.

I've used the phone for over a year without any issues with several kernels and ROMs before and the camera worked just fine.
Yes, I've done a complete clean up - I wiped the whole phone and memory (using the fastboot -w option) and installed different ROMs and even a different OS (Ubuntu Touch), but the camera issue persists.
I believe it's hardware issue, but I just wanted to know if anyone's faced a similar problem.

Yup. I believe that's the exact post I referred to when I did it.
It even lost root during this process (of course) and I had to do it again - something I hadn't done in almost two years.
Since it was a spare phone, there wasn't any useful data on it. I backed up a few pictures and completely wiped it clean. No luck.
I'll add that the issue is only with the camera. Some apps FC, some apps (such as Camera+) give a message saying it was unable to connect to the camera or something. I believe the Gallery also FCs because it uses the camera at some point. All other apps work perfectly fine.

Usually if the phone has any issues at all, that process fixes them. And if it doesn't, then there is usually something wrong with the hardware. I wouldn't think the problem was brought on by installing a ROM or kernel though.
I think it's related to the kernel that you're using
......
i think yes but if you change the rom it will work
some roms the camera has some bugs big bugs colors are broken and stuff
Hello,
I have updated my GT-i9192 to various KK roms (Russia, Brazil...) and I still get hard camera crashes when I try to use the camera.
I have also try using Google's own Camera app, but this is still a problem.
I have also wiped the cache and reset to factory, still no go. I sometime get a 'Camera Fail' window, or the phone reboots directly. I am trying to avoid tripping Knox, so CM and others are out of the question (especially if it does end up being a hardware issue...!) even though I have no reason to think that the camera stopped working in-between updates - nor do I want to revert to 4.2.2.
Any hints welcome, this is annoying as hell.
TIA

try to clear the camera cache and data, but first force close it. after you do this, reboot.
also delete everything from \Phone\Android\data\com.sec.android.gallery3d\cache
Nope
Unfortunately, that did not work...
I am going to try to upgrade to CM 11 and hope that it will resolve my problems.

Upgraded to CM 11 did not fix my problem, I ordered replacement cameras (both) from ebay and the problem is still there.
Seems like a motherboard issue.
So after flashing MHC19J via Clean Core, I can no longer connect to use the camera. What's even weirder, is that I downgraded back to my previous ROM, and now the camera has the same issue. I have no idea how to fix this. I have uninstalled the camera app via system remover app and reinstalled it. Issue is still there. Tried clearing data and cache, still not working.
Any suggestions? I have never had this before.
I have the same problem, could you find any solution?
I have to same issue too... help?
Guys try to flash full stock rom using sdk and then write if problem still is

I'm having yhe same problem, and it's acting strange, I wass on stock N when camera didn't started, rooted installed custom rom, and it didn't start neither.
Reverted to stock MM, and didn't start, upgraded to stock N again and worked just fine, after rooted and installed custom rom again it worked perfectly, and moments later didn't started, Rebooted two times and worked, later it didn't started again.
Tried to change vendor, rebooted in safe mode, nothing worked, any clue what might be the problem?
SOLVED: flashed the vendor again after installeg rom and camera started working,
Thanks!
Hi, after a while, the problem reappeared.
Again i've flashed the vendor.img and camera worked just fine for a while.
If i reboot to safe mode camera works fine but one time the camera didn't start even in safe mode.
So i can't find a proper path for this problem.
I've recorded 2 logcats, - at the first one camera worked fine
- the second one camera didn't start

I'v bought one on second hand, from a bootlooped device. For. Me, it worked, i'm not 100% sure it will work for you but i'd try it if i were you. If it doesn't work you can sell it after.
Hi all, I have tried hard to figure out my camera issues but I'm just going to have to reach out and ask for help. I have wiped/factory rest etc, I have completely reflashed the OEM image, I have flashed twrp and currently am running carbon rom and have root access to try to figure the issue out. When I launch the camera app it launches normally but there is no image just a black screen. If I flip the camera to front facing, same issue and same issue with video. It crashes shortly after launching. I have tried different camera apps and have not had any luck. Is there a permission I need to fix or a file that's corrupt and needs fixed/replaced? I can't seem to find anything about my specific problem. Seems most are third party app issues. Oh, speaking of which, the results are the same in safe mode. Sorry if this is not the right forum, hopefully I'm asking in the right place.
If the black screen occurs in both the stock ROM and custom ROM, then yours is a hardware issue. Otherwise, the custom ROM is the likely culprit.
