Swipe Down for Voice Dialing - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Geez, I feel like I've been all over the Q&A asking questions this week.
So, I have an unlocked M8 with Viper One on it. All of my other unlock gestuers work (Swipe Left for BlinkFeed, Right for Home screen, Up to unlock), but when I swipe down from a locked screen, it simply unlocks the screen instead of going to voice dialing.
This is an issue because I use a Dot View case, so when I attempt to swipe down to voice dial someone from my [awesome] case, I am simply greeted with the time and current weather.
I look through my system apps via FX, and found nothing called Speak, which, if I remember right, is the name of HTC's voice recognition software.

Awesome! I downloaded and flashed the ViperOne HTC Speak. Still no luck. :/ did they say that was supposed to be the fix? Or will it be in the next full blown update?

Are these gestures customizable at all? I have Viper installed but I am just curious if I can replace swiping down with something else.

I thought they would be in a ROM like Viper, but I couldn't find the option.

Two seemingly simple requests

Can either of these simple things be achieved with the Desire?
1) unlock without having to use last button - ie wake up the phone from just a screen tap?
2) have an option to go straight to an event from the lock screen, be that a new sms / email / missed call or whatever other notification I might receive? I don't want to have to press power to unlock, then slide and then navigate through to messages or emails etc.
Oh and while I think about it, can I adjust the sensitivity of the track pad?
All of these things would make it a much better experience!
1) to unlock you have to use a button on top of the phone, no option in the software to unlock with just a screen touch, maybe a third party app would make this possible but not sure.
2)Again this is not something that is included in the default lock screen, you can control the music player from the lock screen but that is about all. A third party option may make what you want possible, not sure if such a solution exists though.
I haven't found any option to adjust the track pad sensitivity but I got used to it fairly quickly and it works just as well as a trackball in my opinion.

Nope. Only things that I can see operable from here is Snooze/Dismiss Alarm and the Music Player. May be more I haven't stumbled across

Again, Not as far as I can See

Oh, and Beaten too by liamw.
on the lock screen, if you've got notifications, you unlock it and then slide down the taskbar and it gives you the notifications that you just click on to open them...or is that not it??
Thanks for replies, seems a shame these simple thinga cannot be achieved in Android.
Sure you can do that eddyos but to my way of thinking that's still too many steps to read a message!
Does anyone else keep hitting the damn full stop instead of space when typing?! Any solutions?
And while I am on a roll sms counter anyone? How do we know when we have reached 160 characters in our txts?
You can do it on the HD2 as the lock slider can be expanded to select the SMS you want to read for example...that was in Sense so perhaps someone will write an app for it once the Desire is rooted...doesn't bother me, tbh

When you get towards the end of a text it says above the send button x/160.
Try expanding the notification tray and THEN locking it. when you unlock the tray will be expanded just one click to get to a message, one click to get back home (home button).
i use handcent and you can rply messages from teh lock screen so that might be what your looking for
Omg the above reply just made me realise I've missed the obvious.

So it does (the 160 characters that is) - not sure how I missed that!
Expanding the notification tray has no effect for me. As soon as the Desire is unlocked it's already rolled back up to the top.

Hmmm, not quite what I am after as I do not want to totally replace the in buily application. Running handcent alongside it still means I get notifications in the native app, which I don't want. Thanks for the suggestion though, I may persevere with it!

Bingo! That's pretty much exactly what I am after - even wakes up the phone so no need for the power to unlock each time an sms comes in - thanks
One problem though - is this a bug? When selecting close at the popup window, if 'mark as read' is selected it should do just that, right? Well it's not doing. Any new sms remains in the message app as a new unread sms even after I have selected to close it with the option to mark as read ticked. So I am having to get rid of it twice.
Can anyone confirm this?
The mark as read thing is a bug, used to get it on my G1 although only when replying to SMS (IE I'd reply, the window would close but it would still be in the tray).
You can just clear the tray when you get the time or, search for a similar app.

Menu Wake/Unlock in CM6.1.1

I noticed that the problem where you can wake and unlock your phone with the Menu key is in 6.1.1.
I'm using 6.1.1 stable with A2EXT enabled and a modified 1020 gapps (new market).
I tried asking around on the cyan IRC channel but no one was answering me. I figured I'd post here and get some feedback before I go report it. It looks like (from searching) that there's no open issue about it.
It's only really an issue when you only want to use swipe gestures/lockscreen gestures to unlock. (Which I want)
I know, you can just slide the keyboard to unlock it, but most people don't think to do that.
Anyways here's hoping to there's a workaround/fix if not I'm reporting.
Thanks!

By swipe unlock gesture you mean the slide to unlock sliders on the lockscreen? Because the menu to wake and unlock has been there all along, but if your regular slide to unlock lockscreen ISN'T working then you have a problem. But since I didn't have that problem when I used 6.1.1 I would assume it's an individual issue and suggest a reflash. However, the menu unlock isn't an issue. I believe you can disable it in cyanogenmod settings, under user interface or something rather.

No, not the jogtag unlock.
Swipe as in you go into CM Settings/Input settings/enable swipe gestures and build a gesture to unlock.
I suppose Swipe is the wrong word, Lockscreen Gestures?
IE I draw a fish to unlock my screen.
You can assign apps to this too. I Draw a V to change sound mode, Lambda (Greek L) for Torch, Gamma for Gmail, etc.
I've reflashed mutliple, and I stress multiple, times. As I said in my first post the option to unlock is unchecked. Meaning it shouldn't unlock but it does.
I even tried flashing 6.1.1 without the A2EXT package and it still does it. I really think it's a 6.1.1 thing. I've download the rom on multiple occasions, from both the teamdouche and cyanogen servers.

Hmm. I know what you're talking about, because I did the same thing, unchecked in it CM settings, and it still unlocked the phone, but I guess I just didn't care since I didn't have gestures or unlock patterns enabled or anything. It might be a bug.

How The Heck Can I Disable The On Screen Buttons?

I never thought that it would be this much of a pain to disable the sodding on screen buttons on the Pixel. This thing alone is making the otherwise excellent experience of it rather moot. I can't stand this thing.
I have tried the GMD Auto Hide soft keys app, but it doesn't work on 7.1.1. Then I tried the All In One Gesture app, it did hide the on screen buttons under some immersive modes but then there is no proper Pie like control in that app, making the point moot for me. Then I found LMT, which gives back Pie but no way to hide the on screen buttons. I have given up at this point.
So is there a way? Or do I have to wait until Xposed is released for 7.1.1 and then use the Gravity Box's Pie Control?
WETA ROM. You can choose no nav bar during install, and then use LMT.
^^^
Weta ROM, DU ROM.
GMD does work on 7.1.1. However, many GMD users like me abandoned it for one reason or another. One, the keyboard has to regain focus. Two, it doesn't work in some apps. Three, in some apps, it simply hides the nav buttons, but the bottom row blank, still wasting a row of space.
Thanks guys but I really want to stay with the stock ROM. I guess waiting is the only option now.

The moment Xposed is available I'm gonna install the GravityBox and then use that Pie Control, which will make the soft keys go away for good. But till then no option it seems, or probably with the help of 2 apps.

I can see someone's reluctance. Let's say it only works "half-way", the nav buttons are removed, and he gets errors in an app. Without nav buttons, he can't get back to the home screen to revert his changes. That may be the main reason I activated "OK Google" so I can still run apps by voice when I play around with the nav bar.

Just did the build.prop edit, it did the job fine of making the on screen keys disappear, LMT worked fine too, but there are just too many system FC messages! Not possible to use as it is.

Have to be from the missing nav bar because apps look for interactions from those buttons. There has to be a graceful error trapping logic to handle the disappeared buttons. In other words, you can't simply yank them.

Nah for that missing nav bar or whatever the hell its called. Adding that line is the reason, not LMT I am sure. But you could try that and see whether the same is happening to as well or not.
I can't wait for Xposed to release for 7.1.1. I don't know whether burn in already happened or not, but mental burn in for me definitely happened in these short three days of usage, other than the fact its an incredibly stupid thing to have on a phone.

If you "can't take the chance of having a bootlooping phone", then you shouldn't be making ANY modifications to your phone. Even if you're using mods that are proven to work, what happens if you make a typo? You're taking the chance of having a bootlooping phone.

Don't agree with you about the latter part. I have been modifying stuffs on all phones I use, simple stuffs, installing this and that Xposed module, testing them, never once I had to face any boot looping issue, ever. Never did edit anything build.prop though.
Thanks for your concern though.

Sort of getting back OnePlus gestures

So I was investigating a little about the matter, I noticed that
A) albeit not visible, it was in the settings app's layouts as gesture_navigation_bar_deprecated
in op_navigation_bar_gestures_settings.xml
B) it had settings(op_gesture_button_side_enabled and others) I could manipulate through adb
What I have found out:
If you run
adb shell settings put system op_gesture_button_side_enabled 0
the back gesture gets put back to the bottom edge. However it isn't all good, as the assistant gesture stays in the corner, and the home/appswitcher gesture gets triggered a lot too, when using the back gesture.
I hope someone has an idea how to improve on this, as in its current form it is highly useless, and I wouldn't recommend it.
OMG PLEASE keep investigating this. i am desparate to change back to old Oneplus gestures!!

Interesting but it could be code that has not been cleaned up, it may disappear in a future release.

I just read on offical OnePlus forums about the L-shaped gesture to open the hamburger menus. Just swipe a little bit down on the left side and then to the right. It will open the hamburger menu and works from top to bottom. Another method is using the two finger swipe from the left border to the right. I'm quite pleased with this solution. It's a pitty they don't documented it in the changelog.
Of course is Fluid Navigation a nice solution to get more advanced gestures.
For anyone interested in adding Motorola's fantastic chop for flashlight and twist for camera I recommend this app
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...vitygestures-moto-actions-alike-t3383760/amp/
It lets you program five different motion gestures to any app and even allows you to fine-tune it. The only caveat is for the gesture to work you have to turn your screen on first. You don't have to unlock it. I just press the side the button then do gesture.
The closest thing to Motorola's far superior gusture and navagation. I wish the OEMs would just scrap theirs and go with Motorola's.

Questions on fixing things after root

Hello,
I used magisk to root my phone and everything's working fine but many things I want to fix and can't seem to find how to.
First of all, what's the point of rooting if only way to remove system apps are with adb? Can do this without root.
Any way to activate double tap to open close the screen when locked? Damn I hate soooo much the single tap to open it and the double tap that does nothing to close it.
Any way to remove the bottom search bar? I removed 2 packages with adb but the search bar is still there.
Any way to close/lock the phone besides the power button? Coming from HTC U11 with squeeze features, it bogs me a lot not having any other way to lock it than the power button.
I think that is it for now. I'll add if I think of more.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Maybe with a custom rom I can remove the useless bottom screen search bar. Is it only working with chrome or can it work with any browser?
What I meant is with HTC U11 you can squeeze the phone to do things like open the camera, take a picture, open led lights, and most importantly lock the phone and close the screen. I was wondering if the 4a 5g can lock screen by another mean than power button.
Also I just found out there are no notifications led. How do you guys know if you have sms or emails or whatnot?

I reformatted my phone just to see what you mean about bottom search bar. The only way that I know of to remove it, install a different launcher... i.e. nova launcher, apex launcher, etc... refer to playstore
No squeezing here... Use power button
When your phone makes the notification noise and or vibrates... Like I told my wife several phones ago... Learned to live without it or get a different phone and do your research before you buy it.
