Hello,
I'm trying to figure out this but after so many searches on internet and XDA forum still not sure:
I want to root my Xperia M but wont touch the bootloader, ideally.
This rooting method dont change the bootloader?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529561&page=5
My plan is rooting, than backup TA partition (untouched). So that's why Im asking about the method described in the link.
Considering that this rooting method will not touch bootloader, after rooting, all changes will be performed/changed on the ROM? If yes I can just backup ROM and tag it as "rooted ROM", use it to restore to my phone when wanted?
I'm really confused about HW/FS topology. What are the parts? Hardware->bootloader->ROM ? Where resides the Kernel? Own ROM contains the Kernel?
I want to backup stock ROM before going to root. I know a method is using SUS to repair phone, extract downloaded files and compile the .tft. I'm afraid because in the past (on xperia mini pro), I did "repair phone" on SUS but it upgraded ROM to a recent version instead! It's probably I did something wrong? I wont upgrade latest but just backup actual ROM. There's any other method to extract ROM without using SUS and before rooting? (i.e. using CWM)
I know this is a lot of questions. Any help on any question, even individually is greatly appreciated.
Salute!
You can root without touching the bootloader with a small app named "Framaroot".Just give it try and select GANDALF Exploiter while rooting it.Google it for framaroot link
Hi XDASenior,
Thanks for direction. I tried framaroot already and it didnt worked. From informations on XDA topic about Xperia M x Framaroot, I think it doesnt work for Xperia M dual (C2004)

bro this method works on 4.2.2
but now all are updated to 4.3 here we have to unlock the bootloader or swap system from ftf file to getting root access.

Hello ansebovi,
Yeah I'm on 4.2.2.
I was reading a lot of XDA threads last days. Also your topics are very useful, thanks for them. My question wasn't about "how to root my phone", my questions were about specific details I (still) didn't find on forums. Of course it may be I didn't search enough yet for those specific questions.
I don't care about having always the latest firmware and since I decided the root method for 4.2.2 (explained here at XDA), looks secure enough, I will just stick to 4.2.2 until I decide to upgrade in some future.
So, to root my Xperia M Dual (C2004) I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529561
To have bootloader unlocked I followed a thread posted by you, thanks for that.
Finally I installed CWM for my firmware version using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494793
It was hard to find how to boot into CWM but its simple as pressing volume up and power up buttons together when the purple light appears.
Now I have this issue: Telling CWM to make a backup, it does it copying files to internal storage and no to the SD card! So I ended for now with this last barrier to finally reach a production state and start customizing my phone. Any clue in this regard is welcome. I read somewhere that Xperia M have different (non usual), designations for storage points. Like calling SD as internal storage and stuff, but Im not sure if I uderstaood that well.
Anyway, thanks guys for the help and tips.

Just some updates:
Accordingly SUS terms of service you are able to recover your phone using SUS just if there's not any available firmware update. If there's some updated firmware, SUS will always flash your phone to that last firmware (even using option "fix my phone"). It makes sense by Sony point of view: They can save money on support if most of the people are updated and using a same firmware at a give time/period. So the method using SUS to backup your firmware is only effective if there's not any update available.
CWM x Xperia M works just great. Was me doing stupid things and selecting wrong mount point to perform the backup. Not sure if it's always the same but at least in here CWM calls internal storage as "/sdcard" and SD card as "/sdcard1". I read /sdcard and thought it were the right location... but it's not.

So - I'm not saying his way isn't good -it's just furstrating that i coudlnt find this app anyway on web so went back to original room rooted -

thanks to him and all others that helps up on this great website-
i wanted to add this file as a comment on his thread -but the website think i'm dumb enough to even commnet.
so I hope - Bin4ry if u see it -plz add it to your thread.
So there it is for u.. ( u can send it to your mobile by using bluetooth\gmail\usb cable-gmail would be to easiest way for noobies i think to find it and install it through there..)
I'll soon to be posting here noobies guide for easy rooting your Xperia S in 30min - if u would want that.

Same on my LT15i - seems there's something missing. Both versions of the APK give the same result, it just doesn't work.
i had no issues
i had no issues on using this app after running the programme i had a back up and restore file in my xps that was not their before told me to run the root file did it all works perfect i used the normal mode in the run me file from bin4ry... option 1 i think..... even for a locked bootloader it worked as after doing my own xps that has unlocked bootloader i did same steps on my gfs xps and she has a locked/b/l worked first time no worries
on the Xperia S I had no issues as well - but the S has backup&restore on board. The Xperia arc doesn't have a backup&restore app in the ICS upgrade - and apparently there's a reason why (copying the respective apk from the LT26 doesn't work either)

It is for ICS and JB only.
I've tried both the apk's from this thread on my Sony Tablet S running ICS and both give the " Unfortunately Backup and Restore has stopped working" message. Any help much appreciated.
Install the latest FlashTool from here ( 0.9.5.0 ) http://www.xdafileserver.nl/index.php?dir=Sony+(Ericsson)/SE+Xperia+S+(LT26i)/TOOLS/Flashtool
In flashtool go to Tools -> Root -> Force Emulator
Then install SuperSU and busybox again if you dont have them

Flashtool method is available in this forum, just search for it . There will be detailed method with pictures. Search for stock 6.1.a.2.50 ftf, which is also available in this forum.
In ur case, uncheck wipe user data and wipe app log before flashing. U won't lose any data but you'll lose root and cwm. So u must root again using bin4ry method and reinstall cwm after u flash.
Please note that 6.1.a.2.55 doesn't support bin4ry method. So u have to update to 6.1.a.2.50.
Good luck!

trying to install ultimate hd 2.0.3, rom manager first loads to a point i can hardly read it and when i go to flash it says unsupported device so i installed it via project x install finished rebooted and phone, turned back on like normal and not into recovery mode, does this mean i have to unlock the bootloader
please help but i am liking the root requirement apps though
p.s Do i have to update the kernel if i want to try Xperia Ultimate HD because one person says about it for unlocked and doesn't mention it for locked bootloaders

I hadn't realized the bravia engine would go away as well... I've rooted... and basically done what I really needed to do thus far to it... I'm just exploring the other options... assuming my wife wants to use it as her daily phone, I won't be messing with it much after the initial setup anyway.
