What is this icon thats stuck in my status bar? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Excuse me for the spam, but I just recently switched from iOS to Android. My M8 has this weird icon all the way left to the status bar. It looks like an N or something.
imgur.com/nTwSdEH .com
Also I seen here that some people don't have the 4G LTE icon when using Wi-Fi. Why is mine there all the time even when I am not using cellular data?

NFC is turned on.

You can turn it off from Settings>>More (under Wireless and Networks) and tap the NFC toggle, or if you're rooted you can install Xposed and there is an Xposed module for "disabling NFC icon" I believe.

Thank you both! Finally it's gone. And I had one more question. There's a scratch or something inside of my display. Best Buy already said they'll exchange it when they get a grey M8 in stock. Is there a way to completely back everything up, including my launcher settings, K9 emails, etc, and just restore it? I know back when I had my samsung vibrant 3 years ago I was able to do complete backup and restores.

Yes and no. There's a backup app called Helium, which will allow you to backup and restore most things. It will still require some manual backing up, restoring, and a little reinstalling. Titanium Backup requires root, which I imagine you don't have? Not sure what HTC's own backup app does.

Bumping this post specifically to see about an answer to this question.
I'm on a stock M8, not rooted, and have had it for the past few days and both 4G and Wi-Fi icons are displaying when I'm connected over wi-fi. Just concerned it's somehow leeching or otherwise using mobile data as opposed to just wi-fi.

Sometimes I get that too but the "LTE" icon will disappear as soon as I open the browser.

In theory, yes. If T-Mobile finds out about it though...

If T-Mobile finds out oh well. I already paid for the data once. Why should I have to pay for it again. Either why the will still slow my speeds after 5GB.
But rooting the phone and freezing or removing the tether manager worked for me as well.

Just an FYI. After I uninstalled the tethering manager and rebooted phone I no longer had mobile data or calling or any connecion via the radio.
I had to install it back from the stock back up. Once I did and rebooted it went back to being fine.
In case anyone else runs into this doing the above.
just a reminder, you don't have to uninstall. just freeze using TI Backup, works the same way, but safer.

I have the free version and freeze is not an option. But I am new to TI backup and just grabbed it from the market.
can you confirm portabe wifi hotspot is working by doing this? please let me know before i return the phone.
i'm currently tethered just fine. the only issue i see is that the only way to start tethering is through the settings menu (which is fine... i don't want to start it on accident anyway).

I totally agree with clamder. Its best to just freeze all the apps that you don't want rather than uninstall just to be on the save side.

Thanks to ronin4740,
to get the factory wireless tethering to work you must delete or freeze tethering manager with titanium backup (or similar app). the you should have the wireless tethering feature working.

In your case, to be safe, just use WiFi instead. Wait till u got WiFi available in any place to check ur FB.

[Q] I messed up with Titanium Backup and now it says 4g, but data doesn't work

So I had to get a replacement Note 2 from T-mobile because my first one had messed up sensors or something. When I got the new one I wanted to backup and restore all my apps from the original.I used Odin to flash CF auto root and do a app and system backup. Then I rooted to the new one the same way and did a restore. I apparently didn't read enough about Titanium backup and restored everything including the system stuff.*Now my data doesn't work most of the time. Specifically when my phone says 4g, no matter how many bars, nothing has network access. I can make and receive calls and text messages although calls have been very spotty with reception. However if I have 4g LTE signal then everything works great. Can anyone suggest a fix? I flashed the stock rom again and reset APN settings to default, nothing is different. Side note, I was able to reset flash, unroot and return the old phone to T-mobile. Any help is greatly appreciated
Have you tried a factory reset?

I did do a factory reset after flashing the stock ROM. Both through the settings menu and by booting into recovery. No change.

Am I really the only one that has had this problem with titanium backup? I read a lot before rooting, but apparently not quite enough. Please, if anyone has any ideas or has had this problem, a little help would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to have to send back another phone espevially one that is otherwise perfect. I don't think that this video is related to my problem. I can make and receive calls and texts with 4g or lte. However I have no mobile data connection whenever I am connected with 4g. All apps report no connection. When I have lte signal all apps work with no problem. Also my imei number is not gone, it is in there correctly.

Just an idea here. ...
Do you have an Add Block app of any kind? If you do, try to turn it off and see if that is the problem.
I had one that blocked my data, but only on Wi Fi. It took me several days until I found the problem.
Good luck.
Hit my "THANKS" button! Come on, you can do it!
i had similar problem
my settings were set to LTE only in factory menu.
so i would get internet only if LTE signal was available.

Have you tried flashing the radio?
You would have to flash a custom recovery (recommend TWRP)
I also had that problem on my Nexus 5 for a few days, I upgraded my ROM but forgot to flash the Radio again, and after flashing radio in custom recovery all was fixed, was strange because SuperSU carried over and it was just a delta (65mb) update, must of screwed the radio I guess. All is working now though.
#cjp420 did u find solution, i have same problem
I did not, but I never tried flashing the radio like the previous commenter said. That actually was an idea I had, but didn't try because I asked and people were adamant that I shouldn't do that.
Believe it or not I am still using the same phone still with the same problem. It's not a big deal because I set it to only connect to lte or gsm so it never connects to the regular 4g. Everywhere in and around austin that I tend to go has good lte reception so I don't really miss it. The only part the kind of sucks is that ot switches to E whenever make or receive a call because there is no voice over lte apparently.

As others have said, there's no way to remove it without root.
The reason it stays lit is because, even though Verizon hasn't enabled it yet, some of the necessary system files for VoLTE (voice over LTE) are already installed on the phone. Once enabled, an active LTE connection will be required for VoLTE to work, even when connected to WiFi. Data isn't being transmitted, and once VoLTE is enabled, only call data will be transmitted (which won't count against your data allowance unless you're doing a video call).
For anyone who is interested to remove the 4G icon while on WiFi you must be rooted and have xposed framework installed.
Its simple just download "Samsung data connection icon fix" mod in exposed downloads enable, reboot and enjoy!
