Replacement usb charging cable? - Nexus 7 (2013) Accessories

Bought a pre-owned N7 today but it's missing the official usb charging cable. Don't suppose there's a cheap solution? The Asus shop only sells the cable and adapter together and it's rather pricey here in Ireland.
I know there are cheap non official cables you can get but I'm not sure whether they will just cause more problems.
Help! Thank you!

Don't you have any micro USB cables lying around? Any of them should work perfectly.

Ah OK thank you. I just remember the 2012 being a bit fussy about what cable it would charge with.

i am going to tell you right now that that suggestion is not good. A while back, i bought 4 OEM LG cables to charge my devices, including my nexus. The cables charge all of my devices other than the Nexus. below this is a link that i posted on amazon to some cables that i have indeed bought and can confirm work with no issues with the nexus 2013 revision.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GDG1KMM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
best of luck

All cables are NOT the same.
From one to the other you can go from .48 amps to 1.1 amps depending. I've seen some output zero on one devise and .44 on another. Get yourself a little monitor to test those cables. Also you might want to get a dumb cable that only charges vs. a smart cable that charges and syncs.

AboveTEKĀ® USB Power Meter Voltage Tester Current Monitor - USB 2.0 3.0 Volt Amp Reader Multimeter LED Screen-Portable Durable mV mA Measurement -

You do not need any special device to test the cables as you suggest. There are two apps I use to test the current flow on my nexus to determine which Micro USB Cables charge it the fastest. The apps are Current Widget and Battery Monitor. Don't need both but both can be used for the purpose of seeing how fast your phone is being charged.
I have many cables I have tried and found that OEM cables do work best for charging, for after market cables I own, the mono price thin Micro USB cables work the best on my nexus 7. I also have amazon basics USB cables but those do not charge well enough. I have a nexus 7 and a moto x currently, so when I can I use the moto x OEM cable with my nexus 7 and any cable with the moto x (the moto x has some kind of optimized charging ability and I have found it charges well enough regardless of cable, but the nexus 7 needs the right cable to charge at a good rate)

Thanks for all the replies....I knew I was asking a valid question. One day my N7 2012 just stopped charging with the supplied ASUS cable. Luckily I had a Samsung travel adapter lying around which it didn't seem to mind! Thanks for the Amazon links but unfortunately I'm not in the States (Ireland).

My Asus cable went bad on me within the first 2 weeks of me buying my tablet (new). I used an old HTC cable with the Asus wall charger for a while, then went with a Qi wireless charger. Much better than factory, now. That's my suggestion to you as well, just go with a Qi charger and be done with wires!

Just get a few micro-usb cables on eBay...

Have you guys found any cables that work with the OEM charger? I broke my original cable, and it seems that all my other cables have too much plastic shielding around the USB port to go into the slot. I have ordered a Monoprice cable and I was wondering if anyone has used this with the OEM charger

I have not had any problems with charging using my various mixed brands of micro usb cables. I have a dedicated 5 port usb charger capable of outputting a max of 2 amps per port and all seems fine. The only problem I've run into is one of my portable chargers seems to not like the N7.

Every single ASUS charger cable I have owned has failed more than once..
They are made cheaply but they charge a fortune for them..
You can find a cheap, but higher grade cable if you look in Amazon or eBay..
Just check what is the maximum Amps it can take..
I go through cords every day.. The ASUS cables failed the fastest..

Thanks a lot.
ANY charger that puts out 1000mA will work with it. Motorola makes "travel" wall chargers that sometimes go on sale for a buck, and have the plug folding into them so it takes less space in a bag. As long as it has a micro-USB plug or takes your USB cable, it will work, does not have to be specific for the phone.
The whole idea of microUSB chargers is part of a larger EU plan to allow for standard chargers with microUSB tips, so you can replace your cell phone but "never" have to replace the wall wart for it.
Just check the power output, most of the Motorola chargers put out 1000mA now because some phones with big batteries (like the Atrix) can use that power to charger quickly. Lower power rating, longer charge times.
You read my mind,
It was just the info I wanted to know.
Thanks.
Bear in mind though, not all micro usb chargers work on atrix. I have a few that dont work but work fine on my other stuff. Im not sure why though. I have an external battery that worked with my nexus one but not my atrix.
I voided my warranty.

The one that comes with the phone in the US is 800ma actually. But as you said, 1000ma would charge it faster.
My atrix charger died so I'm currently using a blackberry charger with 750ma output. The iphone charger works too but it's a slower charge.
Whaddayaknow. The one supplied with my phone says 850mA, the one supplied with my bt earbud is 1000mA. Maybe someone at Motorola is paying attention to profits.<G>
But this is all part of why he industry is moving to standard chargers and why "all" standard chargers should work with standard phones. If a charger doesn't work with this phone, odds are it is too low power or simply a cheap piece of Chinese quality control which has one or more broken contacts in it.
I've gotten USB cables that have the same problem, charge or data not both. that isn't by design but at least one of the four wires in them was broken. Cheap cables is cheap cables--and I've seen cheap cables shipped as OEM from brand names.
Like cables from WD and possibly Moto that have the USB log on the wrong side of the plug--which means they are not entitled to use the logo at all, and the maker does not understand the USB spec.
If you live near a hotel, walk in and say that you left your phone charger in one of the rooms. They usually have boxes of forgotten chargers.
Thanks all for your help.
I started using lg micro USB charger which gives 700 ma.
Will get original one as well.
Thanks again.

WORKING USB Cable???

I purchased 2 of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OSURT2/ref=oh_o05_s00_i00_details
and NEITHER one worked with my Gnex!! It wouldn't sync, charge or anything.
Is there ANY way to get a STOCK USB for the Gnex? (the one that came with the phone, http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I515MSAVZW-accessories last item on the 2nd page)
Also had problems with other micro USB chargers.....a lot seem to have some sork of short in theme.....lose power when I move the phone around....how hard is it to find a working cable? Anyone with similar issues?
I have various cheap eBay micro usb cables and OEM ones and they all work. Perhaps take a look at your gnex micro USB port? Maybe a piece of dust is in there. Or the contacts are screwed. Its probably more complicated than that, but it doesn't hurt to check. GL
I'm using USB cables I got for very cheap and they all worked so far...can you try the cables with another phone?
Hmm well I can try when I get home. My Droid 2 was the same way! only the stock USB would work and a few aftermarket micro USBs wouldnt work! And you guessed it, my Droid 2 USB worked fine with my GNex :S
I bought 2 of these cables and they work just fine:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001XXUOQI/ref=oh_o05_s00_i00_details
They look like the one that comes with that charger, though. Very odd.
I have always had the best luck with the oem motorola micro usb cables. Well made and never a charging or pc connectivity issue and you can usually find them cheap on Amazon.
I have one cable that plugged into PC or into my AC jack gives me just AC, no data connection.
My other usb cable charges but no AC and gives data.
I bought this charger + cable combo.
They are the same models that come with the phone. They work flawlessly.
The kit was a little cheaper back then, but definitely beats having to order random cables till one of them works.

Ditto! works like a charm.
Most of my micro USB cables work, but this one that came with an LG Optimus One (and worked on my Nexus One, HTC Panache, Nook Color) does not register in my GNex. Not sure why - maybe something about the shape of the port or the depth.

Thats weird cuz a different cable came with mine! looks a lot nicer...
Bought mine from seller Yellow deals using the same links posted in this thread. The charger itself works, but the U4 micro USB cable does not for both charging and data transfer. Bummer.
My dad has an Optimus V and I have a Galaxy Nexus. His cord won't charge my Nexus and my cord won't charge his phone.
I wasn't sure why it was this way.
I've tried all kinds of LG chargers and LG usb cables, and none of them work.

I'm almost sure that you manage to damage your USB port, just like I did. It won't do anything but charge AC only through pc and nothing more, no matter what cable I use.
I'm just waiting for my replacement part arive from Hong Kong. 1,5 month already and no word of it. I guess it take that much time anyway.

That'd be tragic. I dont think thats the case because GNex #1, GNex #2 and Droid 2 all had the same issue (certain cords short out, stock ones do not) So I am leaning towards manufactures quality....Just ordered 2 different cheap ones from ebay....waiting....
Definitively a damaged port. I bought a port from Hong-Kong as well, and it took 6 weeks to ship!!
After replacing it the phone charges with all my cables though.

Chargers for the Galaxy S3

I seem to be having issues with chargers for my phone.... What works for you guys???
I'm using a PowerGen 3AMP Charger & Motorola MicroUSB Cable... Nothing else seems to charge fast enough, and I have a bag full of 20 broken MicroUSB cables... Stock whatever came in the box when I got the s3. Wouldn't want to mess with any other chargers not made for my phone it could result in my battery exploding. Read somewhere using different charger can cause that.
Im in the middle of looking for a good combination. My 2yr old broke the USB cable so I've been looking for one that does the job. So far they suck.
Any inexpensive suggestion would be nice.

I'm using my Kindle charger and some random 1Amp charger I bought for like $1.60 on eBay. Nothing's exploded yet. I dunno about fast charging, I just charge mine at the end of the day and have no hurry (thus, sometimes I use the Kindle charger if I'm lazy).

I use the charger from my galaxy tab 10.1. Works great. No problems. Charges me up about twice as fast as the phone's charger will.
I bought this from ebay, and it works well - charges pretty fast. 100% in less than 2 hours I'd say.

I have bought an HTC charger before thinking it would be the same, but it's not. It charges really slow.
In short, stick w/ the Samsung charger.

Look for a charger that's rated at least 1A (1000mA) and is not from a generic manufacturer. Read: Samsung, Apple, Motorola, HTC, HP, Amazon. I personally do not like others. Watch out for fakes, esp if you buy an Apple charger.
Buy a 28/24awg or thicker micro USB cable. Monoprice (can be found on Amazon) has some and I believe Medialink cables are 24/20awg, which is even better. Remember at least 24awg on the voltage carrying lines, a lower number is better.

The problem with the cables is that they rarely specify the thickness of the cable. You pretty much have to eyeball it from the pictures.
But Great advice. Gonna keep that in mind on my next purchase

I just got one of the sea few day ago:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B8M4IMK/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has dual USB ports. One is marked Android the other Apple. The apple port if specifically designed for apple devices (iPhone 5, iPad).
Individually each port can do about 2 amps, or 3.6 amps total if both are being used. The Apple port will charger other devices slowly with standard Data sync cables or full speed with a charging only cable (no data).
Basically with a Charging only cable you could charge two device, one at about 2.1 amps max and the other at about 1.5 amps max (3.6 total amps).
I have two dedicated charging only cables coming that I plan to keep with this car charger so I can charge my phone and tablets on to go.
I tried my Nexus 2013 in my dual Sprint car charger that I got from amazon (Technocel MV9MCDUO-SP OEM Sprint Car Charger - Black with USB Port) and I'm getting a really good charge for my Nexus.
I even tested my phone charging in it's USB port while the Nexus was charging on the main cord and both seemed to cahrge jsut fine.
If I just charge my Motorola Photon on the main cord it charges faster than any AC adapter or car charger I've ever used.
I highly recommend it.
I can't post links yet but its $6 on Amazon.. search for... Technocel MV9MCDUO-SP OEM Sprint Car Charger - Black with USB Port
Fommy says its compatibale for the Nexus 7 2013 too but it's $19.95 there.

I suppose that would work, a 2 amp or 1 amp car charger should power most QI chargers.
Not sure I see the point though, I see two issues:
1. Wireless charging is less efficient and slower (better suited for the desk or night stand).
2. There's a good change the device will move around while driving and not charge if the coils are not aligned properly.
You could try a modify a car mount to hold a wireless charger, but you still would have the slower charging issue, withc may not really be an issue for some.
I have however seen a car mount that holds the phone and has a opening to hold a round QI charger, but wouldn't work for the N7. See here:

What I'm thinking is, taking the back of a slide-in type cover and hardwiring the wireless charger behind it. A slide in type cover should minimize any movement/alignment issues.
Then affixing the entire assembly over my existing NAV screen in the dash with the wireless charger hardwired to the car.
Then, I can slide in/slide out the Nexus as desired, and not have to worry about fiddling around with the Micro USB connector.
I'm not concerned about charging efficiency, more about maintaining power. A 2A charger at 60% efficiency should provide me the 1.35A that the Nexus 7 needs. When needed I can remove it and fully charge it.

broke my Nexus 7 microsd cable..where to find oem replacement?

This morning I woke up and the microsd cable was broken, I guess in my sleep I bent it and it won't charge any more..(just the cable part) from the charger. Is there a place online to buy the oem original asus cable or something compatible? Something that will charge as fast as the original one.
I use a genuine BB cable from a 9900 Bold and it shows charging at AC rate, not USB.

Pretty much any micro usb cable from a reputable manufacturer will work (its the chargers where you get the differences). I've used my S3 cable, an old Motorola cable, and a monoprice (generic) cable for charging it and other devices with no problems.
Some generic cable don't work very well. I've had charging problems. You can get the Motorola cable pretty cheap on amazon.
Mine stopped working after about 3 weeks. The cable was never bent or even removed from the wall adapter either! It's very possible that you didn't bend the cable in your sleep, and instead the cable just stopped working like mine did. Since then, I've just been using one of my many HTC cables plugged in to the Asus wall adapter that came with my N7 FHD. It works perfectly!

This is true! I think the post you quoted would have been better stated by saying that any cable FROM A REPUTABLE MANUFACTURER should work just fine. Not just ANY cable because, unfortunately, there are many 3rd party cables that are just junk. If you have a cable from your current or previous phone, and it's a phone manufactured by a reputable company, then it should work without a problem.

Not just ANY cable because, unfortunately, there are many 3rd party cables that are just junk. If you have a cable from your current or previous phone, and it's a phone manufactured by a reputable company, then it should work without a problem.

Fixed my post I've never bought a no name cable but I can imagine if they're cheaply/poorly built they'll have terrible impedance and charge too slow.
Also note that really long cables will charge slower (unless they use lower guage wire)
For Monoprice, avoid the 24AWG ferrite bead ones (the ones that go for about $1 for a 3-foot one). While they seem like quality cables at first, I've had 4 and 3 of them have gotten flaky over time (the D+/D- ones broke on one of them so it doesn't talk to a computer anymore, and the other two often lose connection when moved around).
I have a bunch of different standard cables from eBay (different lengths), even the colorful ones. All work without problems. It's a digital cable ( 2 data and 2 power lines). if it's not broken or shorted any cable should work. Of course if you approach the maximum length (5m -15 ft) of usb and the cable is not up to the specs it may start failing but for 1-3 m should not have problems with any cable. If we speak about the power adapter (not cable) it's another story. There are many variants and not all provide the specified power, but if the specs are correct the 2A and 3A ones should work. Car adapters , an even more different story. I'm not using my Nexus 7-2 in car (have a build in Android navi now), but I used the first gen Nexus 7, and I tried 3 different adapters until I found one which provided enough power to charge the tablet with GPS and navi on (most will let the tablet slowly discharge). I think this model require less power so maybe even some which did not work will work now.

I did two tests both using the Asus power adapter that came with the device and these are the specs for it from the Asus website:
Output:5.2V 1.35A/7W for other USB device
Input:100-240V AC, 50/60Hz universal
I attached two pictures using battery monitor widget. Just adding in too my n7 is unlocked and rooted but completely stock other than that. The first picture is with the Asus USB cable that came with the device and the second picture is with my 6ft premium cable from monoprice. Sorry if this isn't what you were asking for.

yeah was looking for the mA delivered to device...have you noticed any difference in how long it takes to fully charge the n7? I know there's tons of cables just looking for one with comparable performance to stock one.

I haven't actually been able to test the time it takes to fully charge since I usually charge it overnight but I'll try to run some tests and time how long it takes with the different cables and I'll post my findings. From what I've seen so far from using it, I haven't noticed any difference with charge time between the stock cable and the monoprice one With my experience using it to charge my droid razr (xt912) definitely no difference with charge time compared to the stock motorola usb cable. I'm sure with the n7 it's totally fine.
