SUCCESS (without using a PC) - Verizon HTC One (M7)

After much trial and error I was able to root and s-off an Vzw HTC one on 4.4 hboot 1.56. Currently setting up cm11. Screen shots and instructions after I come home from work assuming I have access to the home laptop (currently shared with older brother and he uses it for school)

It is better than using a Windows 8 computer with only usb 3.0 ports. Until this thread I was stuck stock. I wasn't unhappy stock but I'm happier with s-off and a custom Rom. This thread could include a warning. Do at own risk. Brick is possible. But otherwise it was safe and worked like a charm.

Usb 3 ports work fine with adb and Windows 8. When someone comes in here and asks why they can't do anything with their phone for ~2 weeks because it's stuck in a weird state, point them to this post.
Like I said, we specifically mention NOT to do it this way for a reason. We don't just write these instructions because it's fun....

Greetings,
If @beaups or @jcase advise against using a certain method you should heed their warning.
They have both been finding s-off exploits for all of us for many years, and they know what they are talking about.
The instructions were removed as a precaution.
Thread closed.
Thank You,

Did it through Ubuntu though, but sure it works just as well in Windows with V3.1.

Just used it on an already rooted desire
Only used it to get rid of stock recovery for clockworkmod
Works absolutely fantastic on a macbook pro
Just run the file
Connect your phone to your computer and it does everything automatic, just let it run for a minute it'll tell you what's going on, you'll end up in the recovery of your choice

This is looking pretty sweet for those of us who wanted an automated process Can anyone tell me how unrooting would work for this, in anticipation of the official Froyo update from HTC?
Used this yesterday, worked like a charm.. 1 minute, one click.
Installed Official FroYo Sense ROM...
Using this method you no longer need a goldcard at all.
so this is easy way to root a phone?
I did it yesterday. Incredibly easy and straightforward once you have the android drivers installed.

Would this preserve the data on your phone/sd card?
Tried this loads of times. Just sits there telling me to plug the phone in and enable usb debugging!
There is a thread on this in the Dev. forum. It might be worth posting any issues you have in there.
You need to install HTC Sync, then uninstall it, leaving the drivers installed. Install the driver that is included in the download package, connect the phone then click! This is on win7.
I have used this method and rooted my Desire! Thanks for the info. I am now thinking of installing a custom image of 2.2 to try. I would like to backup settings and applications before I do this. Any tips on how to do this? Has anyone else done this successfully?
I tried it yesterday and it worked fine! All you have to do is plug your usb cable and start the application. After a few restarts, the phone is rooted. You don't lose any settings, and your ROM stays untouched. You also have ClockWorkMod recovery flashed and you're ready to flash any ROM!

How to root

I know this seems like the most retarded question ever, but can anyone point me in the right direction? Yes, I've used search and the results were all bogged down with trivial crap. I want to root my Incredible so I can use a Gingerbread ROM. I'm completely ignorant when it comes to rooting and crap, so could someone preferably point me towards a beginners guide? Thanks.

You use a RUU and flash it like a radio through your update. It will set your phone back to just like you got it from verizon. No CWM, ROM, Kernel, any evidence of tampering. It's the best thing to do if you break your phone. Although I sent my old one in that I bricked without doing it and they sent me a new one and never said anything.

You download the file and make sure it is named exactly PB31IMG.zip
then:
1. Put the PB31IMG.zip onto the root of your SD card
2. Turn your phone off (not reboot)
3. Hold volume down and the power button until your phone boots up into HBoot
It will ask you if you want to update, press volume up to update.
Then once it finishes it will ask you if you want to reboot, press volume down.
Here is the newest radio:

I am not sure what "flashing WM" is. I am no expert at Android. I've had mine for 3 months but it's very addicting and i strive to learn more always and people were willing to help me and gave me the feeling that none of my questions were stupid. I hope I can make others feel the same.
You put the RUU on your SD card on the phone. The link I posted will go through it step by step but basically you just load the RUU (PB31IMG.zip) to the main directory of your SD card, power off, volume down + power button and press volume up when it asks you to update and most importantly DO NOT interrupt it. Make sure your battery isn't going to die, your battery won't accidently dislodge and if it seems like its frozen just let it sit there and seem like it is. It is very important not to interrupt radio's and RUU's

Their are 2 options one like posted above that is flashed through hboot from the sd card or the RUU which is a Windows PC based .exe. You can find both with instructions here http://dougpiston.com/?p=7

I Recently *Rooted* My Girlfriend's "HTC Droid Incredible" & *NOTE* This Was After The "OTA" Was Sent Out!! Lol!! I Say This Because Alotta Advice, & Posts I Read Didn't Work If You Received That "DAMN OTA"
But Finally, The Method That Worked For Me Was The *NEW* Method From "Unrevoked-Forever"
I Think I Was The 3.22 Method, But Can't Remember For Sure!!
Anyway, All You Have To Do Is Download: The Boot Drivers, The Unrevoked-Forever Zip., & The 3.22 Zip (Or Whatever The Newest Version Is Now)??
Then Install The "HBootDrivers" To Your Computer!! Follow The Video On The *unrevoked.com* Website!!
Then Open The File 3.22 File, & Click The Top Left File Button, Make Sure USB Debugging Is Enabled Settings/Applications/Development, Connect Your Phone & Let It Run!!
*Note* It Will Look Like It's Not Doing Anything, But It Is, Let It Run!
It Takes About Fourty Minutes To Complete & Will TELL YOU WHEN IT'S FINISHED!!
GOOD-LUCK!!

Word to the wise, if the rooting process seemed too hard to do do not do it and stay stock, lot less risk of your phone bricking.

The Wiki guide is right here, if you haven't found it yet:

Just read up as much as you can before you start, and follow the instruction very carefully, and you will be fine.
The Gingerbread (Android 2.3) OTA that is currenlty being deployed is not currently rootable (and requires downgrading first to root), but you should be okay since you are still on the T-Mobile 2.2 ROM still.

As far as the usb drivers go, I used pda.net from the market. If after you install pda.net it still sees your phone as usb mass storage only, then unplug your phone, remove the current driver and plug it back in. It should ask you if you want to set up your new hardware and show it as an android device

NO. And yes. Confused? Here is a link to the method myself and many others have used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
This is an "easy" method using Visionary to temp root ONLY and then G-free for perm root. Do not be tempted to check "perm-root now" on Visionary since there is a high brick risk. Anyhow, this method runs scripts so much less chance for typo errors... just follow the simple directions to the letter and you will be rooted in no time. Works like a dream.
That was easy! hah, this was a lot easier than what the wiki told me to do. Thank you so much
edit:i restored to my back up (phew ), but why does the CM screen keep on repeating after I try installing 7.03?
i rooted everything fine, but after installing CM 7, the boot logo keeps on repeating, and the home screen won't pop up. is there a fix for this? :/
No prob.
Did you do a full wipe before flashing CM7? Even if you did, I'd recommend a "Superwipe". This is a zip you flash from recovery like anything else, and it really gets to everything on your phone's memory. I don't have the direct link but you can download it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991254
It's down the page a bit, in the "attached files". The one on the top called SuperWipeG2+. Also, the ROM on that page is a nice one if you're looking for stuff other than CM. (Though CM is a good place to start)
I didn't do a complete wipe, I just did something else instead. I figured it out before checking this up, but thank you a lot for the help. +Thanks

Or you could just go into bootloader by taking out the battery and holding volume down+power and check to see wether its Marvel, MarvelC, or MarvelCT

You don't need to unlock it, just S-OFF it. Our amazing devs here have found out a way for MarvelC or cdma marvels to get s-off in a very simple way. Just search a bit, you'll find it.
Good luck.
-SDOTN
I have searched, and tried 2 different tutorials. no results.
This helped me to get S-off on my MetroPCS Wildfire S phone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIKsoZf2BCA&feature=related, but it didn't root me though for some reason. That's when I kind of turned to this guide to root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195275, but MrTaco told me to use this file - http://www.sendspace.com/file/4svn2h, instead of the custom recovery one on that guide. All you have to do with that file is download it, then extract it to the desktop, and then run the recovery.bat, while the phone is plugged into the computer with charge only and USB debugging on.
It's a lot easier. Then all you have to do is follow the steps in part 2 of that rooting guide. Also, if you do want the bootloader unlocked, you can skip the RUU part on the htvdev.com site and go ahead with the other steps. That's what I did, and I never had a problem with this phone.
Thank you, i will give that a try later on tonight.
With good end results, with my phone rooted, i can use roms and such right?

[Q] When will we see ONE X “official firmware” that we can flash

Hi just wondering if anybody knows when we will see official firmware that we can play around with, and what is the process of flashing HTC phones, this being my first HTC, do they have simple programs like odin that I use with my gs2?
Your phone is already running "official firmware". As for flashing HTC phones, it's all done through the recovery menu. Things may be different for the One X as it's running Tegra 3 but as for now HTC phones do not have anything equivalent to ODIN.
Ok I see that method is fine, what I meant with “official firmware realises” is when will they be released so we can try different country’s/carriers firmware, for example on gs2’s you can get everything from the first realises of gingerbread to the latest ICS realises from all different country’s/carriers.
Not at present, no. We need S-OFF for that (the equivalent of fully unlocking the bootloader on a Samsung device)
At the moment we can go custom or use the ROM your phone came with
