[Q]T-Mobile phone on other carriers.. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Howdy,
Quick question... on using the T-Mobile phone on other carriers. I researched around and it "appears" that the phones are all the same internally.. I believe this phone will work on ATT without issue, how about Verizon? Just use a applicable kernel, and modem??
The reason I ask is that my work has offered to cover cell phone but they only have Verizon and ATT
Any reason to pick one over the other?? I was thinking Verizon has they have better coverage where I need it but any other concerns?
Alternately I could just get a s5 I guess... any issues with the s5 and rooting/customizing besides the Knox thing?
thanks in advance!

I would go with tmobile just unlock your tmobile device.

I might lean toward ATT... but my understanding is that all the s4 phones have the same hardware, the modem software determines what "bands" they use...
I see on the Verizon forums a few users have used their Verizon phone on Tmob.. so I would think the reverse would hold true...
ill research more (and maybe get some more feedback)..... don't have to decide today
I have the old baseband (no knox).

I think you can only use tmobile phones with other gsm carriers as long as its unlocked. I'm not to sure about gsm and CDMA. They are way to different.

I been thinking...instead of messing with all that and end up with a brick, why just not sell it on ebay and buy an actual Tmobile one or maybe trade with someone willing to. I would look at the selling price for an AT&T GS3 on ebay and how much would a Tmobile run and if it's not that much difference then pay the difference than end up with a possible brick. Plus I have read some forums where if you flash some things that are not meant for your phone you can even mess up the IME on your phone with no way to flash it back at the moment until someone comes up with a solution for it.
Not trying to be a jerk. Just a friendly reminder that this is not development related and needs to be in general or QA. I would repost there and report your thread to a moderator before the pitch forks come out.

When I put my friends note to t mobile it was the modem you had to flash , if your set on doing it , read a bunch on ways to do the note WITHOUT a custom Rom then find the same files you use in that ( the modem and if I remember right there was one other thing ) then go to the t mobile section in the sgs 3 thread and ask for help finding those files , but do a lot of reading first cause it would be a shame to brick your awesome phone

im looking into this as well, i had the att note and flashed the tmobile modem worked like a charm so now im looking to do same with s3. if i find anything ill let you know

Have you guys tried the radios in the dev section by wildchld? I'm not sure it will work either but maybe worth a try. It has a script that backs up current radio and you can revert back. Atleast on T-Mobile s3 it does. Just need to reflash the restore zip to go back to previous radio. Again try at your own risk. There's a huge chance you can brick your device.

I don't think it matters if the Gs3 from T-Mobile doesn't have LTE, I used to have my Galaxy s2 skyrocket with LTE running on T-Mobile 3G/4G off a GS2 Hercules Modem.

Then by all means, give it a shot. I have no problem being proven wrong on stuff like this!
Just remember that was a different phone. And tmobiles radio Im pretty sure was confirmed to NOT support LTE. So they are different.
I'm definately looking forward to hearing someones results after trying! Just do some research on the two radios, and make sure the sw modem is on the same partition for each phone. (I think it will be. But if its not you could end up with serious problems)
Good luck to whomever tries it!

Just like everyone else, ive been wrong before, and it would be awesome if I am this time. I just dont think it does a lot of good to speculate either way when the rollout doesnt even start till next year and most of us wont see it till a year after that
It just seems to serve to confuse people and get their hopes up when it probably wont even work with this phone.
Also, a number of people have unlocked the T999 for use on Sprint and Verizon and are not able to get LTE. Just sayin. Im leaving it at that though.

the nice thing about MSM8960 SOC board is that the radios can be programmed to virtually any current GSM, HSPA or LTE frequency in use in the United States today. the board has a RAT lock on it and not sure if it can be unlocked but all GS3's support any of the three frequency's. now if any one knows how to unlock and program them thats another story.. and just cause the software has a setting doesnt mean tmobile put it in there. and with the gs4 launching in feb-mar im not to sure they would even update the gs3. every one wants lte and if you have to buy a new phone to get it then thats how they make money.
Well I have talk to several people from samsung and tmobile and they said that the s3 is capable of the LTE, but you can't use them till the end of this year and beginning of 2013 .I hope this is true, if you guys don't believed me ask Samsung or T-Mobile and I try 5 times different people and they all told me the same ....

This is probably because they use the same build for all 4 models and it's easier to leave it in since 3 carriers carry it?

Well thats your opinion. THere is no reason to post a thread about an opinion with zero information backing it up. It is quite rude of you actually. DocHoliday has been telling everyone that there is no possible way for our phone to support LTE. And why does he say this? Well because thats his opinion, but he has it backed by very simple to understand hardware specs. LTE is a total separate radio then the standard GSM that our device has. So unless they release a new S3 for T-Mobile, then the S3 will never see LTE. There is no amount of software hacking that will put a hardware component into a device. And every T-Mobile person i have asked confirmed the S3 will NOT support LTE. SO EVERYONE just leave it already.
What really annoys me is how you decided you just had to create a whole separate thread about this which has been discussed hundreds of times. you have an opinion great, post in a thread that already exists.

T-Mobile LTE working with unlocked SIII

Just wanted to let you guys know that LTE works beautifully on an unlocked ATT SIII.

April Fools with a bricked S3! Don't know if I should laugh or cry...
Think the OP was just stating that his ATT S3 is working on TMO's LTE network...
The ATT has different hardware than the TMO S3...its not the radio software thats the issue...its the lack of a LTE antennae on the T-999
I believe the latest software update that tmo rolled out took out the LTE software that was in previous builds
While I don't thing we will get lte on our phones the thought of the hardware being different is hard to swallow. One of Samsung's deal with the s3 was hardware unity. With this they have one plant, one run to manufactur phones and when a carrier need a stock of phone all that was needed was software. This idea of a different model just for tmobile is hard for me to believe.
Once again I still don't see lte comung for us, so please don't assume I am giving any hope to get it

If ATT S3 LTE can work on TMOB LTE network and T999 with same chip as ATT version.
sounds like TMOB trying to prevent S3 user to pull down they trial run LTE network.
and also prevent those people not in those trial site switch over other carrier.
I thought this was confirm a long time ago that the tmobile s3 doesnt support lte, As of an unlock att s3 to work on tmobile lte may be possible. if that the case It will be better off to sale or trade your tmobile s3 with an att version of it and you will have a s3 with lte
There will be a new s3 lte version of this phone at the end of this month...the current s3 is not the same as the att one so we will not have lte...

That's why I mentioned Verizon first. But it seems it may not be so simple any more.
The recently released Straight Talk SCH-S960 belongs in the Sprint forums. I spent a couple of days helping a couple of people find and verify this.
So it probably does belong in the Verizon area, but w/o looking I can't say for sure.

It makes sense that the St version is Sprint - all of their Android phones are Sprint. They don't want to pay what At&t and Verizon want for smartphones. Sprint gives em cheap at wholesale.
The R530 seems to be the same for Verizon, MetroPCS, and Us Cellular. From research, the JB update was a 4.1.2 radio - also some are saying that the ICS radio might not even work with that workaround. The MetroPCS version appears to be the exact same as the Cricket version so it should be safe to flash. Emphasis on should.

Right, and that's where the confusion came from. ST was expected to be with Sprint forums, but the SCH, made people think it was Verizon (and a few thought T-Mobile since ST uses their towers in some places apparently). I was just trying to point out that we can't always go by the prefix in the model number anymore. Why they did this.....I wish I knew!
So when they were updated to JB are you saying it skipped 4.1.1? Sorry if I'm getting myself confused or misunderstanding you.
And I'd have to look, but I thought the unlock worked for ics too. But I could be wrong.
Also POSSIBLE, but not recommended, is flashing another models radio. Most of the S3's have the same partition layout. I know several that have flashed other radios w/o bricking. It didn't work, but it didn't hurt anything either. Could it be possible to do this just to unlock, then go back to stock radio?
For example, AT&T users and T-Mobile users have tried each other's radios. All T999 variants can safely flash each other's radios too. They may not work at all, or only partially, but they were able to simply reflash their correct ones. This makes me think that as a last resort it could be attempted. I do not and will not recommend it since I know next to nothing about the 530, but figured I'd throw it out there in case anyone wants to look into it.

The Us Cellular version actually supports more bands than the Cricket version...
Cricket: Frequencies and Data Type: LTE Dual-band: Band 2 (1900MHz), Band 4 (AWS); CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev A, Tri-band: 800/AWS/1900MHz*
Us Cellular: Frequencies and Data Type: LTE Quad-band : Band 2 (1900MHz), Band 4 (AWS), Band 5 (850MHz), Band 12 (700MHz) CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev A, Tri-band : 800/AWS/1900MHz*
We got ripped for sure.

The biggest issue is all the different frequencies in use... And its going to get worse with the 600 spectrum sale. There are an insane amount of bands and technologies in use.
And then there are companies like Verizon that are anti-consumer... That's not going anywhere.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the S4 was the same as the S3 regarding international vs US. I heard its more compatible between US versions, but not with international since it once again gets the best processor (Exynos octo core) while we get the Qualcomm quad core one. This time we don't even get more memory. Still 2GB.
The international also uses a different graphics processor. Not sure if it's better, but it is different.

The US and most of the world are all on Qualcomm chips in the S4. Korea got the Exynos as did most of Africa and Asia in general while the US, Canada, and Europe all got Qualcomm.
That new S4 would be perfect for T-Mobile once they have lit up full LTE since they're deploying LTE-Advanced out the gate.

ok, I wasn't sure about that, thanks for clarifying it. It's no wonder sales aren't meeting expectations. It's basically the international S3 with US memory! (I know there's more to it, but when you really simplify it....)
I was thinking the same on the new S4. Don't see any indication one way or another if T-Mobile will actually get it though. And oh how I hope we do!
I can potentially see many unhappy original S4 buyers soon! (Look how upset some are over the T999L!)
I'll leave it there on my end, seeing as we are now just a little bit off topic!

Yeah like I said before.. The US GS4 being able to flash roms from the International is a huge + for me.
How about that iPhone? I always heard that it supports all global bands? If Samsung didnt had several different hardware between the phones like for international and us. It would be easier for them to push updates. And be cheaper for them too.. Not having to work on several hardware difference for an update. Maybe they got that idea and started to make the phones with same hardware like the S4.. I was waiting for fathers day to see if tmobile would have an offer for the s4 and they didnt

T-Mobile's "offer" for the iPhone 5 wasn't even really an offer anyway - its all based on their trade in program now. But they did slash 50 bucks off the S4 until 7/30 when it goes back to 149 down and 20 a month.
As for the iPhone being global, didn't they have some super custom crazy modem made for that though?

[Q] TMobile SIM No Service On Unlocked T999 WHY?

I had purchased a used TMobileGalaxy S3 T999 that was unlocked (dont know what form was used to unlock it)
I had been using a net10 ATT compatible sim for a few months now on it, but today I decided to go ahead and activate at tmobile for their 4g speeds and better signal in my area... To my disappointment my phone shows no service with this sim card... The service rep tried the sim with 2 of their other galaxy devices and It worked fine... but not mine...and its a tmobile branded galaxy s3 t999.
So I took it home... figured maybe if I flash an updated modem/radio it will work... but no, flashed UVDMD5 modem/radio with no luck...
my old sim still works... my gfs sim works... and their from completely different carriers... so my phone is clearly unlocked for other carriers, but just not tmobile... its original carrier :'(
And I already activated for the 1 month $60 unlimited plan with 2.5gb 4G so its seems I'm out of money.. and left with no carrier and no phone to use currently... :'(
You guys have any idea how I can fix this?
Currently I'm on cyanogenmod 10.1 jb 4.2.2 (Im also going to try flashing stock fw to see if anything happens)
Looks like TMobile blocked the IMEI because someone reported the phone to be lost and claimed insurance benefits.

Who did u buy it from? Not necessarily tmo blocked Imei. Rep could of looked that up. Someone could of however changed the Imei. Damaging the security partition and they're not matching on tmobiles network.

Its more likely to be blacklisted if you ask me. I'd call Tmobile and ask. By the end of tge year, all us carriers are supposed to begin sharing blacklists. So if it is, it'll be rendered useless anywhere in the us in the near future.
I'm told att and T-Mobile already are sharing these lists. If that's so, and yours is blacklisted, then it'll probably get blocked by att soon too.
Oh, and anytime you're having problens like this, odin stock firmware. Get rid of the rom as a variable.
Call and find out for sure. ...

Yea flashed stock and got bars but couldnt register to network...called they confirmed my phone was reported lost -_-
So now my imei is blacklisted... and talking about changing it is a big nono everywhere from what ive seen
I bet its simple to change but I prefer having a specific set of instructions when messing with that stuff :S
Think about it please, if everywhere you look, everyone tells you not to do it, there is probably a very good reason.
It is illegal. And personally, I would not be comfortable putting someone in that position.
Unlock and sell it overseas is pretty much your only option. Sorry man...

As I understand it, by the end of the year all US carriers will be pretty much using the same blacklist, so it won't just be AT&T and T-Mobile.
And it's people like that "friend" that measures like this are necessary. Is he gonna turn scammer next and try to sell it on craigslist?....basically stealing a whole bunch of money from someone who can't afford to buy a new phone?
The only somewhat honest option is to unlock it and sell it overseas via eBay.

No! It is illegal! I understand that your friend was willing to commit fraud/theft by deception (or whatever you want to call it), so this being illegal probably doesn't matter either. But on pretty much every forum on the internet, including XDA, even just discussing this is against policy.
Please! Consider this! You are asking in a public forum for someone you don't even know to assist you in breaking the law! I truly hope you understand what I am telling you and take it to heart. Personally, I think it is just plain wrong to put someone in that kind of position by even just asking. Id recommend you drop the whole thing tbh.

I have an idea, go away from XDA for stuff like this, we do not do fraud here, nor do we try to assist in fraudulent actions.
