Google Voice - voicemail still goes through T-Mobile? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I have 4.3, stock but rooted. No KNOX trip.
I used Google Voice (GVoice) for a long time prior to Note 3. Voicemails to my Gvoice number will go to Gvoice, not T-Mobile or AT&T (previous carrier). Voicemails to my phine number will go to the carrier's.
With the Note 3, Voicemails for my GVoice goes to. .. the carrier's?
1. Someone call my GVoice number and left a message
2. GVoice indicate there's a Voicemail.
3. T-Mobile ALSO indicate there is a Voicemail - icon on notification bar.
I can even press and holds "1" in the keypad and dial to T-Mobile voicemail systemand listen to the message.
I already setup GVoice as shown in screen shot.

I had issues with voice as well, except that I wasn't getting any calls, on either number, only voicemails. Got that straightened out thru tech support, and then had same issue as you. There is no working solution, except to have T-Mobile's voicemail handle both. From what I have been reading, voice is going to be integrated with Hangouts, and your voice number will be for VOIP. Google will more than likely launch it's own service, using Sprint and Verizon's network, and their fiber network, giving them nearly nationwide coverage. If you own your voice number, at some point you are more than likely going to have to choose one or the other, unless you want to pay for 2 lines, or have voice number only for VOIP calls. Unfortunately, that seems to be the way it is, unless you are on sprint, and my guess that wont last much longer......

Interestingly, I never had this issue when I had AT&T and I just moved to T-Mobile about 3 months ago. I am wondering if T-Mobile have made changes on their side that interfere with Google Voice. I'll dig deeper...

Yeah...I came from Sprint about 6 weeks ago, and had seamless integration for 3 years. Had to move to T-Mo because of the whole Spark and vision "upgrades" made getting calls and data almost impossible, and just had to start using voice number to make all calls, and message on other number to please call voice number. in 6 months or so, I will just lose the other number, and port the voice number as my only line. It's a shame, as I really liked having 2 numbers for my phone...it was like having different email accounts for different people/businesses.

For GV to work you must have forwarding to GV set up on tmobile for unanswered calls.
You can't do it on prepaid plans. My solution to it was to call tmobile and completely disable their voicemail. Then eventualy GV voicemail will pick up calls that are not answered.

Google Voice problem [SOLVED]

I've been using GV for a couple of months with no problems. However, last week, in an apparently misguided attempt to update to PRI 1.4, I screwed something up. I went into EPST-Data Profile-Menu-Restore to re-run the activation process on the phone. Since then, when I try to enable conditional forwarding via the *28+number code, I get a recording saying the feature is not valid or supported. Sprint says there is nothing wrong on their end, so I figure I screwed something up doing the reactivation.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Did you try uninstalling it and then reinstall the App from the Market?
Might work.
Try updating your profile, PRL, etc.

This is somehow different than just using the link on the GV settings page? I've never had to dial some magic code.
Thanks for the speedy replies, guys. I should have listed what I've done so far to try to correct it. I've loaded up several different ROMs (CM6, Fresh,AvaLaunch, etc.) with full wipes between each one. I've got the most recent PRL (60670) and have uninstalled/reinstalled several times, all with no effect. The only thing I haven't done is try the re-activation sequence all over again. I suppose I have nothing to lose by doing so, right?

Sorry for the double post, but I figured it out! Or at least I figured out a workaround. I found this on a Sprint Community forum:
There are three types of Conditional Call Forwarding you can choose from:
1. Busy – Only sends calls to an alternate number if you have two calls active at the same time (e.g. you are on a call and have a call waiting)
2. No Answer – Only sends calls to an alternate number if you don't answer your phone
3. Busy/No Answer – Will send a call to an alternate number for either condition listed above
Note: You may forward your calls to two different numbers for Conditional Call Forwarding by simply completing both steps 1 and 2 below. You can forward calls to one number when your mobile number is busy, and a different number if you do not answer.
Setup instructions and Star (*) codes for managing each type of conditional call forward are listed below:
1. Busy (*74/*740)
* Turn on just Conditional Call Forward - Busy
o Dial *74 plus the 10-digit number you are forwarding your calls to (e.g. *555-555-5555).
o Press Talk.
o You should hear tones, then the call will disconnect. Your calls will now forward to the 10- digit number you entered for when your mobile number is busy.
* Turn off Conditional Call Forward - Busy
o Dial *740
o Press Talk
o You should hear tones, then the call will disconnect. All your calls will begin ringing on your phone again.
2. No Answer (*73/*730)

So, instead of doing *28+number to activate both types of forwarding, I did *74+number AND *73+number individually and it works.

Just out of curiosity, did you have Google Voice set to be used for all outgoing calls? Because if you did, that'd explain everything...

Very good thought! But no, I only use GV for voicemail. I've never used it to make a call.
I had a similar problem but the issue was that having call forwarding enabled on the phone actually doesn't really change anything on the phone. Once you enable it it is enables on sprints end, thus if you try to enable it again it wont let you because it is already done. Don't know if this is what was up with yours but I'm betting that was the deal. I upgraded my PRI and never had to touch anything calls still went to GV. I know you had it fixed but just thought id post this in case anybody else had the issue.

I agree with your assessment. What puzzled me was that neither the enable code (*28+number) nor the disable code (*38) were recognized as a feature. They both yielded the same "feature not available" recording. I tried them both over and over again with no luck. The *74 and *73, however, worked first time with no issues. I can only conclude it has something to do with Sprint's network in this area. I know they are currently doing upgrades in the area, so maybe it's related to that.

Wifi calling

This probably has been asked many times, but I haven't yet found answers for wifi calling for canadians. I recently purchased the galaxy nexus and it'll be shipped to me soon and I plan to have a cheap plan.
Anyway, I couldnt find any info about wifi calling other than some vague explanation of google voice and sip calling that isn't available in canada without some fiddling. Is it possible to have the same wifi number as the primary number for incoming calls when wifi is available? I know on the nexus s when you want to make calls, you can either call through sip or cell provider, but not sure how that'll work for incoming calls in canada.

Brother works in Detroit and signed me up for a Google number using my account(got the number in minutes).

Basically... Groove IP ties your google number to your phone. While the app is running you can call out AND receive calls with that number. Works over wifi and 4g.
When your talking over 4G it doesn't use up your minutes but rather from your data plan because your communicating with voip(brilliant).
I can also receive calls to by change settings in my Google voice account.
I signed with virgin and it feels good to stick it to them.

Setting up GV seems just a matter of getting up a proxy, but now the question is that can the GV number be tied to say, the primary number of your provider? I know this seems extremely unlikely, but it seems like a bit of a hassle to call friends and they see some US number on top of the primary number. Also, if I were to receive calls through Groove ip (by GV), that would mean the caller would incur long distance charging to call to the US (GV).
I guess free is always what its worth (but free calls wooo!)

I hope that works for us canadians. Although it won't be much useful for me personally, since people wouldnt want to dial a US number with the rates attached just to call unless it's unlimited to the CA/US.
Now I'm thinking that GV and Groove Ip is one method, but how will skype work? I wouldnt mind paying the $10 prepaid for skype's low rate, but I have no idea if Skype will work like GV and Groove IP.

You can use the ICS SIP VOIP client built into the phone dialer application.
Dialer -> Settings -> Internet Calling (Accounts) -> SIP Accounts -> Add account
I personally use Sipgate.com as my SIP provider. I could use Groove IP with my Google Voice account, but this gives me a 2nd option for VOIP.
The great thing about it is it integrates into the phone app, so history, dialing, ring tone settings, contacts, noise cancellation all work as expected. I haven't tried it but I suppose bluetooth works with SIP as well.

Unfortunately I dont think sipgate is available in Canada. I looked up on voip ms, looks extremely complicated and I'm not sure if that is even compatible with the ICS SIP features.

When are we gonna have Visual Voicemail?
Can somebody develop a generic visual voicemail app that can retrieve voicemails using the service providers settings, after manual input.
This shouldn't be hard. I have iPhone visual voicemail package still on my account, if there was an app available I'm sure I could just plug in the retrieval settings and it could work.

Android has this for years, go to the market and download Google Voice. Follow directions closely. Voice has a lot of features.
then go to voice.google.com to set it up. The only feature you want is the voice mail on your android(you can use it for other things too)

(i might be reading this wrong) Google voice mail feature is free, using google voice to make phone calls is not free to certain places.
You might need to get a phone # to join, after that never use it. Just associate's your # with voice.
I was replying to the free visual voice mail comment. Its not free from Verizon unless on the iPhone.

so I'm a little confused here. So google voice can be used as a voicemail service for my existing wireless number without having to register a new number with google voice? Free of charge?
Btw is not that easy to get Google voice up and running here in Canada, its currently limited to the US also.. I have to use market enabler and a few other things to bypass the fact that it is only avail in the states..

Wish I could get a visual voicemail account in Canada. I have a google voice account but the app doesn't work on my nexus. Sigh. Anyone have any solutions for across the border? I can make calls from my phone using google voice using GrooveIp.

Verizon DOES indeed have an official visual voicemail app for the GN. Search the Market for "Visual Voice Mail Nexus" (publisher is Verizon Wireless). If this helped, please hit the "thanks" button.
PS-I'm in the US so I can't verify that it's functional in Canada, but it definitely works great for me. It is subject to VZ's $2.99/mo fee. I hate paying the fee, but I need to use carrier voicemail (not 3rd party service), and $3/mo is a small price to pay to avoid having to listen to 20 voicemails to get to the one I want

No not at all. Google voice lets you keep your same number and just takes over your voicemail only so there is no change whatsoever. You only use google voice for calls if you want to.
GV just replaces your voicemail and keeps everything else the same.

You guys are VZW users with Google Voice so I am hoping someone here can verify my assumptions....
I realize you can use GVoice as visual voicemail... if you want to utilize your data plan for text and GVoice on VZW I assume you have to at that point get a new GVoice number different from your VZW number. Is that correct?
I ask, because I am now on Sprint and my GVoice is my Cell number. If I move to VZW will they force a new GVoice number on me? I know my Sprint number is portable to VZW, as I have checked that. It would be nice to be able to still get texts on GVoice with my main number and avoid a text plan.

I hate having the check my voicemail calling, so I loved that Google Voice would intercept it and I was able to just play it. (Sort of like the iPhone)

Anyway, I've set it up as the default Voicemail service, but it still goes through to T-Mobile or whatever.
So, my question is.. how can I get Google Voice to work how it's suppose to?

Ah, nah.. I've tested the T-Mobile VM, not sure why I prefer the Google Voice, it doesn't look all T-Mobile bloated, I guess. >.<
Anyway, I got it working! Guess setting it up on the Galaxy S3 with TouchWhiz or whatnot doesn't update the forwarding numbers.
So, doing it online did the trick for me!

It used to say 'Activate GoogleVoicemail on this device,' it gave me a number to dial on my Dialer, and bam! Worked.
I'll mark this as resolved, ahah.
I haven't used gv too much but the few times I did the full site always resolved the problem lol.
I'm using Gvoice for VM bcz I can't bring my phone into work. When someone leaves me a VM, I can listen to it online.
That said, it was a multistep process to get it to work. Had to sign in to Gvoice on the web, then go to prefs, make sure my phone was added, then select Gvoice to do VM for that phone. It then gave me a code I ad to type into my phone to actually activate it.

Took two tries, but got my GVM working again. Was working fine ... then all of a sudden my regular VM and VVM kicked in and GVM would not take voice mail any longer. Was driving me nuts. Thanks for the info.
I just called them up and told them I wanted to use google voice as my voicemail and wanted to disable tmobile's voicemail altogether. They walked me through to the actual voicemail settings which obviously didn't work and then he asked me if he wanted me to disable the visual voicemail. I said yes, and from that point forward it started working with and without wifi calling. I was able to select Google Voice as the voicemail service and it actually showed up in the list.
If all else fails
I am on CM10 nightly and I couldn't get this working using the install or code from the voice website and since my employer controls my tmo account, I am limited in what I can get from TMO. I did figure out a way to get it working
Steps -
phone app ->menu-> call settings -> call forwarding
I sent all of these forward options except for "Always" to my google voice number. This seems to be working now.
In the dialer type *004*+1gvoicenumber# that should set everything up

I went through the setup after installing the Google Voice app and it said that it was set up. I know it worked for the first day because I got a voicemail that showed up in the Google Voice app and a notification like I was supposed to. Now when I call my phone I am only getting the T-Mobile voicemail. I have only had the phone since the 2nd.
Elsewhere on the net I found that some Verizon and Sprint Note 2 owners are having a similar problem but not any T-Mobile users. I followed the suggestions in this post (which I can not link to because I have not made enough posts, google: note 2 google voicemail it will be the first result) to try and get it to work but found that it only works if you reject the call with a message. I am wondering why the manufactures ROM's never work. I had less problems with CM10 nightlies on my T989 SGS2.
I would appreciate anyones input since I use the Google Voice number for my company and it is the only number we have. I don't get many work calls, 5 or 6 a year but I still want to be sure my clients get the right message or even me when they call.
It works fine here. Just tested it.
If the Voice app doesn't set it up properly, you can do it manually by dialing the following string directly on the phone:
*004*1XXXXXXXXXX#
The Xs represent your phone number of voicemail number.
If you log on to Google Voice on the web, go to settings, there's a link right to the right of the phone listing that pops up instructions for your carrier.

I am wondering why the manufactures ROM's never work. I had less problems with CM10 nightlies on my T989 SGS2.
I would appreciate anyones input since I use the Google Voice number for my company and it is the only number we have. I don't get many work calls, 5 or 6 a year but I still want to be sure my clients get the right message or even me when they call.

Be aware that you cannot use google voice as your voicemail if you are on a monthly 4G - no contract - plan.
I already went through the process of doing the ##004# to de-activate the Google Voice forwarding to my phone and then reactivated it with *004*1XXXXXXXXXX# but still had no luck with getting it to work. T-Mobile voice mail picks up no matter what. I went through the settings online for Google Voice also but found nothing. It has been working with my 4 other Android Phone sin the past on T-Mobile, all rooted and flashed with different ROM's almost weekly.
I am on a contract plan with T-Mobile so I don't think that should be an issue.

With the Verizon and Sprint versions of the Note this seems to be a problem for more users than here on T-Mobile.
Go to Phone > Call Settings > Call Forwarding > Voice call > and change "Forward when busy" "Forward when unanswered" "Forward when unreachable" to your google voice number +1xxxxxxxxxx
Also make sure Voicemail service in Call Settings say Google Voice.

I have done all of that. I checked and doubled checked that all of those settings are correct.
I found that I can force it to go to the google voicemail if I select a quick response message when someone calls ie. I am driving now. This only works if someone calls the T-Mobile number though, not the Google Voice number.
My phone is just not forwarding to my google voice number like the settings are telling it to do. All the settings say it is but in practice it is not.

I had the same problem as you, but I saw forwarding wasn't setup properly even when it said Google Voice as Voicemail service, but I changed it to gv number in forwarding it works like a charm.
Don't know what else to say. Sucks that it doesn't work for you.

Same happened to me, fixed by logging into Google voice account via website to enable setup/settings, don't know why I had to go through that since it was set up already from previous phone, but this fixed issue
I will have to mess with it again today. I am surprised it is having an issue.
I am going to disable and reset it all today and then reinstall. Hopefully that will fix what ever my bug is. If not it might be time to root, never have these kind of problems when I control my destiny.

I was having the same exact issues with you and I tried everything that was suggested in this thread in various order with no luck. Then I tried it in this order and for some reason it worked:
Deactivate Google Voice on phone by pressing ##004#
Uninstall Google Voice app
Activate Google Voice on phone by pressing *004*1XXXXXXXXXX#
Install Google Voice app

NP I'm glad it worked!
The x's represent my phone number, right.... not Googe voice number? If so, how would I find my Google Voice number. Same problem here.

The x's represent your google voice number. Go to your Google voice account with a browser to find your number. It is listed in the settings.
It is slso listed in the Google voice app in settings. At the bottom it says my Google voice number.

yea, but the question is, how long will it work? I set it up on my phone, 2 days later it didn't work, did it again, a week or so later, yesterday actually, it didn't work again. I signed out of google voice, went back in, configured again, did the deactivate voicemail, reactivate voice mail and nothing.
finally went to the call settings part for forwarding and typed thenumber in manually. I did notice at least for me that the number listed on google voice is not the number you type in there, you must type in the number on google voice that starts with 004.
its working again now, but for how long is the question. really bizarre.
That is what I am wondering also. The other forums said the same thing that it comes and goes. The first day I got the phone I set up Google voice and it worked for 2 days. Then it stopped and I started this thread to see who else was having the same problem and how to get it to work again.
We will see.
