Anyone used GPe and Sense variants side by side? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got the GPe and I'm extremely disappointed in the camera quality, at least with the stock camera app. Has anyone used both side by side? How do they compare with the 'optimized' sense camera?
Also, if available, anyone have an APK for the sense camera? The other sense apps like T.V. remote seem to work well without any issue. I'm curious if the APK alone will work on GPe.

This makes no sense to me, but from what I've read all the variants are different models/hardware? Or are they just different radio versions? My point being, if I'm using a GPe using that theory isn't there a chance I'd have different results?
Which variant do you use that you converted?

I can see how that would work then, I'm on T-Mobile with my GPe, I didn't realize I'd have network issues until I read it after I bought the device. I still have my Nexus 5, so I'm not worried. I'm really just waiting on the OnePlus One.

How you root it is just flash philz recovery in dev and then flash supersu. You can always flash back the stock recovery (look for my thread in dev)

Thank you I will look for it now.

I'm interested in Sense camera as well. GPe one just doesn't cut it.

Sense camera will not work on gpe, no way to do it as it requires the sense framework.

Per posts in other forums the M8 is running on sense framework, so unless that's not the case, that's not the reason.

[q] [discussion] HTC One port possible?

Is anybody as excited as I am about the HTC One? Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing a port to our One X.
Can anybody see a reason why this would never happen?
Good Question. I am also interested. But the first problem should be solved first. It's the screen problem. hTC One has a full 1080p screen and One X only has 720p. So everything is needed to resize.
Sorry about my bad English.

That does pose an issue straight away. But surely it wouldn't be the first time we've seen a cross-resolution port? Then again, none pop to mind
What about starting with Sense 5, or even just some things like messaging etc. All depending of intirgration with the new framework i suppose. We'd really need the input from a developer here.
Android is famous for its abilities to change resolution on demand. In fact its one if the best things in my opinion. Just look at the clambook pro coming out soon, it amplifies your device screen to its own. Source
I'm curious to see if we can port the new Zoe feature for the camera, as i don't know if it depends 100% on the camera sensor of the HTC One, or it might be more of a software implementation, rather than hardware. Saw the video of the new camera interface and features and I gotta say, it's awesome.
Waiting to see if a port will be possible :fingers-crossed:

Well, like some devs did for the SII initially, we'll have to start with resizing all the images to XHDPI, rather than its 1080P screen.
However, many of the features, like the camera might not work, since it depends on the new Image Sense chip and new hardware altogether AFAIK, so we would need to make or edit custom drivers and libs, which, is very difficult, not impossible tho AFAIK.
Hope this project is a successful one, Good Luck, and I'm here to contribute, of any help/contribution is needed

You won't be able to port from the HTC One because of the screen res. By the time you finish resizing anything HTC would've released a new phone with Sense 5 and an XHDPI screen. Wait for that, then port.
As for the gallery and stuff it looks like it'd be a imagechip thing after the image has taken and is generated either in the camera app or in the background. If it is a CPU/GPU thing that launches when you use gallery it'll probably drain your battery pretty quickly using it, considering all the images you'll probably have.
If it is an imagechip thing you'll need to hack the camera app to use the old imagechip library. That might not work either though. So test it.

Yeah we're probably not getting sense 5.
Note how HTC never said the Sense 5 update and instead just said a general update. They have done this with other HTC products like the Sensation and its update to Sense 4. Instead of updating it to sense 4 they made sense 3.5. I see a similar thing happening for this phone.
But let's hope I'm wrong.

There is no way to get the "Official" GPE on the Verizon HTC One because it is only intended for the GSM HTC One. But the direction that user brholt6 has pointed you in is the closest thing to a GPE HTC One as your going to get. It does require some extra things to be done first, as in S-Off, rooted, and custom recovery, but after that all you have to do is install the ROM.
I don't know your personal level of knowledge on customizing phones, but all the stuff needed is pretty straight forward and can be done following guides on this site and others.

Yes there are two versions of the HTC One M8, one running Android 4.4.2 with HTC's Sense 6 overlay and the other running Android 4.4.2 with the stock Google Now Launcher (basically looks like Android on the Nexus 5). As for which is better, some will say stock Android others will say Sense but with HTC making their apps available for the GPe it might be worth getting that and then adding the HTC apps you want

[Q] GPE conversion vs GPE ROM

Coming from a Nexus device I can firmly say I much prefer the experience of Vanilla Android to Sense UI. Should I fully convert my M8 or just flash the GPE ROM? I'm leaning towards full conversion so I can get OTA updates, but I'd like to know if there are any downsides to conversion. I don't see myself diverting much from Vanilla Android, but I might like to try some custom ROMs in the future.

Just flash a Rom. They get updates too. Then you still have the option of flashing something else. No advantage to doing full conversion. I have had nexus 4 & 5 but I love sense too. Full conversion cannot flash sense roms because of partition sizes.

Thanks for the response. Won't I have to go through the hassle of flashing updates if I go the GPE ROM route? I have no desire to use Sense ROMs. In the future I'd maybe be interested in flashing something like CyanogenMod or another OS like Ubuntu Touch if it ever makes it the M8. Could the GPE conversion hinder that?

I would think the gpe partitions would be big enough for those. Most of the gpe roms have ota updates too. It's up to you. You can convert back to sense if needed. The only upside I see is a little more free space on phone.

convert!
I believe that the only advantage of the full conversion, is that you can get the update via OTA.
When an updated version comes out, a new GPE ROM will certainly be made available to flash.
Bye :good:
If you flash the GPE RUU it becomes a GPE phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708589
Yes it does alter partition sizes but there is now a method to flash back to Sense. (see post #2)
Providing you install the GPE stock recovery you can get GPE ota's.
Personally for me it's a no brainer - Love stock and hate sense!
