Music quality with earphones

Hi i hvnt purchased a desire yet but im looking into it, howver i just need to know one other thing before purchasing.
I have heard the sound qualoty isnt good from the speakers but insread i need to know if the music/sound quality is good through earphones, i currently have an x10 and i can safely say the quality through earphones is terrible, no equaliser, very quiet.
Also does the desire have equaliser?

most roms now come with the dspmanager .... there are also apps on the market to remove the european restrictions with the low headset volume

I have have a set of sennheiser PXC 250 sound is very good..... or depends what you need .. and at what level the mp3s etc are at .. 320bit is better than 128 etc..

I have a non-branded unrooted Desire. the sound level is very good, I have no complaints. the big problem for me is the lack of equalizer, as the bass output is very weak. I have a pair of good expensive headphones that have bass booster and it's still very low. Unfortunately I cannot correct it without an equalizer.

you could try louder volume hack

I use mixzing music player, I highly recommend it. It has EQ.
Standard headphones sound ok, but I prefer the ear canal type.
The volume from the stock ROM is fine.

Sound quality is terrible through speaker and headphones. I wouldn't recommend using the desire as an mp3 player. Battery is bad enough without playing music.

I just bought the Sony Ericsson MW600 HiFi Bluetooth headset with FM Radio and the volume is incredible compared to the stock headsets it comes with. Plus as a side benefit, the in call function works great too.
So while the stock sound and headsets aren't the best, there are some good 3rd party solutions out there.
Now I have to say, I love the commute to work now wearing my new headsets. It makes my Desire a great MP3 player.
BTW, I agree with the battery issue. It isnt the best. But all the smartphones are not that great.

Depends very much on the headphones being used. I'm currently using Philips SHE 9850 and let me tell you -- they are awesome, the best I've ever had. Volume is more then sufficient (I'm usually at 50-60%), sound is very balanced, clear and rich. No need for an EQ.
You should also consider which radios (2G/3G/WLAN/BT) you are on when using certain headphones. At least mine tend to pick up (due to a pretty low impedance -- "ohm") quite some noise by the radio when on 2G. When loading a website it sounds like an old modem. Fortunately, most of the time I'm on 3G/WLAN which produces much less audible noise ("heartbeats").

That's funny coz I bought a portable speaker and my desire sounds okish through it and my ipod sounds miles better.

i also own an ipod and the sound quality of the desire it quite easly on par with it

Mixzing all the way, perfect since the 2.2 update! Has a warmer sound than my Ipod touch through headphones.

Wow u guys thanks for all the info, now its settled im getting a desire, i like the fact its up to date and has decent hardware, not too bothered about duel processors just yet... ill be looking into those earphones you have been mentioning, just need to ebay my x10 and 3g first...

To me, sound quality of the Desire via the headphones is great for a "walkman". I have also compared it to iPod and, to me, it seems the same. So, that means it's FAR from rubbish...
I can also recommend great and cheap headphones if you want very good sound:
Search for NuForce ne-6 or ne-7m (they are the same, but the 7m also has a mic so one can receive phone calls and has playback controls).

DAC part of Tegra 3 Chipset?

Im thinking about buying the new LG optimus 4x. But I cant find a single review, that mentions the audio quality on this phone. But it has the Tegra 3 chipset, so if the DAC is part of this, I could check a one x, to get an idea of the audio quality. Would be great, if someone could help me out

the GS3 have a wolfsonn,no one know what have the HOX?

I don't know what's in the HOX but it pretty much sucks balls. You can even hear a *poof* when the music starts and a few seconds after it stops, not to mention the crappy sound itself.

OP - Really is very reliant on the quality of your audio files I find, poor quality mp3's will sound TERRIBLE, worse than on some other phones. If it's high quality FLAC rips then the sound quality is really very good for a phone, better than the Desire I used to have for example and miles better than the iPod I used to have.
I have Denon in ear for going out and about with and a couple of quite high end (full size over ear) headphones and good quality files sound really good through them. The one thing I would say is that the output volume is not as high as some other phones I have tried, so you do need quite sensitive headphones if you like your music loud.
No idea what the DAC is but for me it's a great portable music player. No such thing as audiophile in any phone but it's definitely one of the better ones i have tried.

Really? I've heard several cases of this behavior so I guessed it a widespread problem.
GSMarena has put the real specs to the test, here they are.

I also find the OneX sound much worse than on the desire. Beats only changes it from tinny to plasticky. It is so much worse, actually (both on stock earphones and via car stereo) that I no longer enjoy listening to music from the phone in my car, the sound gets on my nerves.
Instead of shelling out gazillions for having the name of a makebelieve gangster on their stuff, htc could have bought millions of decent audio chips and still give them a catchy name That would be the htc spirit I always liked.

I've seen the GSM Arena article, and I can only talk from personal experience based on my phone not yours. I do not have the issues you mention at all. Could be a bad batch of components hence why some are better than others. I've seen plenty of people say it's great quality, plenty of people say it's crap, so would seem to point towards that logically.

This is due to the player you're using. I swear by neutron. The ui might be a bit overwhelming for non audiophiles, but I'm getting some great sound with this app and beats disabled.
After some time with this phone, I'm finding the hox's sound to be quite different, but not necessarily of lesser quality compared to my old sgs1 with voodoo.
My advice would be to just change your music app and if you don't like neutron as I proposed, you could go with power amp or player pro with dsp pack.
On a final note, make sure you get your hands on a decent pair of headphones before commenting on the quality of a Dac. You can't really make any assumptions about these kinds of things if your basing your experience on a free or a $30 pair of ear buds.

The sound is not the best in the world but its much much better then Galaxy S with voodoo sound while playing at the highest volume, at highest its just awesome stable with this beatsaudio thingy tested using Sennheiser HD 555, mind you galaxy S3 has a cheaper version of op amp used in S1.
The HTC One X have the very best sound in every angle: microphone/speaker/headphones/ear speaker

The volume and quality through the headset is good, unfortunately the loudspeaker is rather poor and doesn't go very loud. Typical HTC though, their speaker components tend to be rather low quality.
LG tend to have alright speakers (The Optimus 2X went fairly loud), but I can't say whether the 4X's will be any good or not
EDIT: I realise you were specifically asking about the quality rather than the volume. The quality is pretty good, you wont be disappointed by it. The Galaxy S III supposedly has fantastic audio quality though, which is likely to be better than the One X's due to the fact that the One X uses 'Beats' (which sucks) and the SIII has a Wolfson Micro WM1811 which is apparently pretty awesome (http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/audio_hubs/WM1811/).

It's not. I've tried a number of different music players, different EQ's, different thread priority for the audio. All exhibit the same fundamental problems arising from a poor quality DAC. Heck, even the volume up/down sound causes the pop/crackle issue.

I've tried 5 different sets of headphones on my One X, some in ear, some open back, one Bluetooth. The same problems could be heard on all of them in varying degrees.

If your guys phones are rooted, flash the latest dspequalizer on this phone. Helps tremendously with sound quality. I agree with the person talking about flac files. You don't even need to have flac, just try to get high bitrate mp3s. I listen with Beyerdynamic headphones which take more power to drive, but it's enough for me and sounds great.

I totally agree and I don't think my Grado SR60i's or Shure SE215's are to blame. Really, the quality just sucks on the HOX I own.
No biggie for me though, since I have a PMP for music.

Of course the dac is not the best. The point I was trying to make is that I was able to eliminate most of the hissing and strange pops upon volume changes etc by switching to the neutron player leading me to be believe that these are not necessarily related to the Dac itself.

With my beats headsets i have excellent audio quality, didnt try the original one...and the sound from the speaker? Well i dont know what you expect, in my eyes it is good enough (i dont listen to music over it) ... and BTW, i use well ripped mp3s because over the beats headset you can hear every single detail in songs ... youtube is also great ...

As far as I know, the beats audio plugin is only a peace of software, isn't it? It has nothing to do with special hardware, its just an equalizer setting. But I'm confused some sites say, the one x's audio chip is the same, that is build in the one s, but the explanation of the Tegra 3 chipset says, that it is able to handle 7.1 surround sound, which means it includes an audio chip. I think I have to wait for reviews of the optimus 4x to solve this problem

[Q] Best EQ Settings for Gmusic?

I just bought some AudioTechnica ATH-M50's (AHHHHMAZING btw), and I can't make them sound any better than my old like $30 headphones on my phone and tablet. Anyone have any EQ app/setting recommendations for me?

heh... had the epic. Compared the two with the same song and headphones and such. However the epic had voodoo sound my gnex stock. Boths sound quality was similar. Maybe it's just me but I didn't hear a big difference.

That is what I have. I switched to Galaxy Nexus after using Sony Ericsson's Walkman phone for 3 years and the first few days have been terrible as for audio experience! I am using the stock headphone

The equalizer should not have any bars turned up higher than 0
That is, the middle. Any adjustments should exist below the center. If they are higher, it will cause clipping during certain songs and passages.
So, if you've made some great sounding setup, and your highest bar is at +7, turn all the bars down 7 ticks so they are the same compared to one another, but the highest bar is now 0. You will need to adjust the volume up to get the same loudness.

I know I don't own a nexus yet but I'll do a few things in hopes to get the audio better.
The mods I used you saw in the picture of the equalizer, the reason those were up is because it was allowed to use the bands properly with the appropriate audio mod.
Also.. if you do turn them up without an audio mod just lower your volume and turn up the highs/mids, not too much though otherwise exactly as you said.. clipping or giant distortion.

Someone i know wants to swap their htc one for my SGS4 ,
they dont listen to music a lot and i do EVERY day so my question is is the beats audio as good as everyone raves on about?

Yeah I've looked on YouTube but it's not really a good comparison. Only thing that puts me off is the camera

I don't have a comparison of the S4 to the one, but I did just upgrade from S3 to the One about a week ago and I do think the sound from the One's speakers is a whole lot better than any other phone I've owned or heard. I don't like beats audio though. I actually turned it off because it seemed to bring too much bass through and distorts the sound quite a bit. With beats turned off the phone sounds very very good, imo, and sounds amazing for a phone. Another note is I haven't listened to any music with headphones, only with the phone's speakers, so I don't know how beats would sound using headphones.

I listen to the HTC One a lot with headphones and I keep the beats audio off. I have noticed with the beats audio ON there is a hiss in the background that takes away from the music a bit. For just the speakers, the beats audio on or off both sound really good. Hope this helped!

I usually leave it on when I'm listening to music or audio of any kind through the speakers. Haven't done much headphone testing but I don't remember being excited about BeatsAudio through headphones.

The thing is, when you turn it off, it doesn't actually turn off. It adjusts the equalizer in the opposite direction instead, so you get artificially degraded sound. A pretty sneaky way to make you think Beats makes your music sound better.

This is what I have told people for years about beats. There's nothing special about it that its just an eq setting which you can recreate with any DSP type app we have seen out for a while and quite honestly make it sound better. Beats is for (I hate to say it) for lazy people that doesn't want to take the time to setup an eq setting.

This is true but using other DSP apps while running aosp ROMs on this phone have gotten better sounds than what beats could produce. Beats is just a general eq setting no more no less. Most likely they did a study on the eq settings and this setting that's in the phone now is what the general population agreed on. Me myself can enjoy beats setting but there are times I like to fine tune it more.

I use the power amp on my HTC and used it on my galaxy s, 10 band equalizer appears to sound good.

It definitely sounds better on the One with Beats enabled, but the external speaker volume takes a pretty big hit with Beats on. I usually end up leaving it on for music, but turn it off whenever I'm watching a video. I think just as good or better sound with better volume can be achieved with DSP or Power Amp.

They are over rated. With the auto adjustment part it makes the music sound weird like its fading in and out. thats the most annoying part. so i leave beats off.

As said before it's nothing but an equalizer. It does sound great under most conditions but it's nothing that should make or break your decision on getting the phone as just about any audio app(and other custom ROMs) can do the same.

I probably wouldn't consider myself a picky audiophile by any means but I think the stereo speakers on the One are most of the difference I hear. My audio app is Poweramp which has a really nice EQ built in. I prefer to tweak that over enabling Beats. Beats sounds over processed to me. Even running AOKP, the first time I had a notification while I held the phone had me startled with the clarity and volume of the sound... and that was without Beats obviously.

Beats just sounds like a bass boost to me. Which I'm okay with or without.

What is the audio quality like through the headphone jack?
A good pair of headphones & Flac with both built in music player & Poweramp?
Is it as good as both the S5 & the M8 or is it better?

I think the quality is good. However some handsets have a problem with internal noise, i also had this issue but it kinda fixed itself after the first few days.

Yeah something like that. But i just read people having this issue made it go away by changing from dalvik to ART in settings. When i think about it (i also changed to ART) that was when my issue also was gone. So yeah apparently a software issue.

I would it is better then the S4 & the M7, I didn't think they where all that good.
S5 & M8 are a good yard stick.

GSM arena ran a bunch of tests and basically found that the G3 has the highest output quality of any Android device, up against the S5, M8, Find7, and Z2. It's not the loudest, but there will be mods for that.

Yeah something like that. But i just read people having this issue made it go away by changing from dalvik to ART in settings. When i think about it (i also changed to ART) that was when my issue also was gone. So yeah apparently a software issue.

I changed from dalvik to art. But the noise remains in the left ear plug after reboot (checked and art is still selected). Any ideas?

Crap! I just tested again and now i also have a silent buzz when i play music. This is really not right. Also i have this beep-beep sound the moment i plug in my headphones.

Is this buzzing present when playing through Bluetooth headphones?

I can tell you that it's the best mobile I've heard. I play Spotify @320 through Shure SE846's and sure it's not the absolute top notch but it's REALLY good. Like, I don't feel the need for an external Amp/DAC.

with poweramp and withour direct volume control, without any egalzer..nothing, the sound is simply amazing.

The M8, G3, Note 3, and S5 all had pretty good sound quality with headphones imo. I really couldn't say which is the best. They all sounded pretty good and comparable to each other. I still use my ear buds from the HTC Rezound. I don't care what anyone says but those were some good headphones for a free pair.

Maybe it's just me but I find the volume to be on the low side (using Google Play Music All Access) and the sound doesn't sound warm like it did on my SGS3

Check out the mod in the developer section. You can make it plenty loud very easily (with root).

That would be EXACTLY why you can't tell any of them apart, LOL. It's like saying Blu-Ray and DVD look the exact same when you're watching them on your 13" CRT TV.
And no... the stock buds that come with a phone aren't good. They're terrible. Quite literally the only good things you can say is that they put sound in your ear and it's possible to buy worse ones at a 7/11.

Stock earphones from the HTC M7 and M8 are great for free headphones quite loud and good sound.
I have a pair of JVC extreme in earphones that I bought for £15 quid and they are loud, also have a pair of Dre Beat's Solo's and they sound good.
I'd say the stock volume for the rear facing speaker is very loud for a back firing speaker I was quite shocked at just how loud it was.
Headphone volume was on the low side though.
I used a guide in the dev thread to boost the auido volume of both speaker and headset and then used Viper4Android and WOW oh WOW.
Best sound I've had out of a phone.
I've owned alot aswell. Coming from the Nexus 5 the sound of the G3 blows it away.
I would 100% suggest rooting. Increasing the values as per the guide and getting Viper4Android installed
