Can a SGS4 i9505 4.4.2 be rooted? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello everyone,
This is my first post within this community and I apologise if, it probably is, my post is in the wrong place. I am very new to forums and cant seem to find excactly what I'm looking for in this sea of information. I have been trying for over a week now to root my Galaxy S4 which is running 4.4.2 I have followed many tutorials but none seem to work. My latest folly, with ODIN 3.09, is fruitless. Before I go any further I'm wondering if it can be rooted in the first place. My main reason for rooting, as this ROM is quite nice, is to rid the phone of a ton of bloatware and try to improve the battery life, not to mention use superior apps. I'm a novice at this stuff but wouldn't bother others if I could manage it myself. Could some kind soul give me advice on where I'm going wrong, if indeed it is able to be rooted. Also, point me in the correct direction of an appropriate thread if this one is wrong?
Many thanks in advance
Craig
edit >>>
Here are the details of my phone (UK version)
GT-i9505
4.4.2
Baseband version - I9505VJUFNB2
Kernel version - 3.4.0-718801
Build number - KOT49H.I9505VJUFNB2
When I'm using ODIN 3.09 I do not get the COM port light up the appropriate colour (yellow I believe) but I do get the "ADDED" text.
Can someone point me in the right direction please? I will be extremely grateful, thank you ))
edit>>>>>
I also have this information on the download screen of my phone, some of which I haven't seen referenced elsewhere, which makes me think it can't be done on this phone or I have missed somnething about the root process.......

sugestion for a thread: rooting succes stories Defy+

This is not a question but a suggestion for a new to start thread and making it sticky.
The problem:
Defy+ rooting
After much research and attempts I still did not succeed in rooting my device and it seems that I'm not alone.
These are the details of my Defy+:
System version 45.0.2310.MB526.retail.en.DE
Model number:MB526
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband version EPU93_U_00.60.03
kERNEL VERSION: [email protected]#1
Build number:4.5.1-134_DFP-231
Boot loader version: 09.10
I believe the Boot Loader version is the problem, all fixes seem to be made for lower BL numbers, but correct me if I'm wrong.
My suggestion: starting a sticky thread with succes storys of how you rooted your Defy+.
included in every post would be the phone details and the tools/procedures used. Extra info could be what you did after rooting succesfully: new sbf file, what mods, etc.
It would make live easier for all Noobs like myself. Instead of crawling through the enormous pile of info you go straight to the succesful endresult.

The exploits/scripts work all the same for versions til BL6.
For BL7 unfortunately the only method till now is to flash the rooted SBF. (method= Here.)
While a sticky thread sounds good, but I guess a wiki guide would be much better.
Hi neo.ank,
Wiki or sticky, for me its not important. But in this way we can learn much more & quicker than plowing through all these threads.
But your remark is most helpful to me.
Am I correct in my understanding that I can flash another sbf using Motorola's
RSDlite (without root access) and then, with the new suitable .sfb root my phone?
Like I stated before: I'm not hindered by any knowledge on the subject...

Yes.! You got it right..use the SBF's mentioned in the rooting thread.
To get the idea 'bout flashing, sbf's etc. Go through

Its for defy but the flashing and stuff is same.

Remember to use the search found at the top of the forum. There is also a search within each section. Example click on Q&A HERE. In the upper right you will now see two search's. [SIZE=+1]Q2: How do I install a stock update (I'm on a non-rooted phone)?[/SIZE]This link click here will explain the full procedure
[SIZE=+1]Q3: Where do I find Keis and what is it for?[/SIZE]Kies can be found click here. Kies is used to manage the content on Samsung mobile devices. It is used to move information between your PC/Mac to you phone and vice versa
[SIZE=+1]Q4: What does Root/Rooting mean?[/SIZE]Put simply, Rooting your device allows you, and/or rooted apps, to access parts of the Linux based Android software that is your OS, and that you would otherwise not be able to access. These tasks can be as simple and beneficial as backing up your system setting, or as complicated as installing custom ROMs, Kernels, etc.
[SIZE=+1]Q5: What is ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and what is it for?[/SIZE]Please read HERE. There is much to learn, please view everything in the threads OP
[SIZE=+1]Q6: What is the purpose of rooting my Samsung Galaxy Note II?[/SIZE]Please bear in mind, rooting can be dangerous and if done wrong "brick" your phone.
Rooting the phone is a decision made by individuals looking to improve upon the Android OS. There are many benifits, however it is done to customize the phone to it's full potential
[SIZE=+1]Q7: How to I enter Download Mode and Recovery?[/SIZE]1) Make sure your phone is unplugged and powered off.
2) To enter Download Mode: Hold Volume down, home, and power until you see the android.
3) To enter Recovery: Hold Volume up, home, and power for about 5 seconds then release all buttons. You may need to try this a few times.
[SIZE=+1]Q8: What is a "logcat" and how do I create one?[/SIZE]For setting up ADB see What is ADB (above) logcat allows us to log what the OS is doing, and possibly offer information if things are not working. its quite simple to create but may be difficult for most to understand. This is a tool a Developer may ask for in detecting issues your device may be encountering.
To use logcat
Code:
adb shell
logcat
To logcat to a certain file do
Code:
adb shell
logcat -d > /sdcard/whatevertexfileyoulike.txt
For a full explanation follow the link in What is ADB
[SIZE=+1]Q9: Is there an app that will help me create a logcat from my phone?[/SIZE]Yes, however it does have its limitations. If you're stuck in a "bootloop", the app will not work, you will need to use ADB for this. If you're data is not connecting on a certain Rom, (or something similar) within the already booted OS, an app can be rather handy and and more user friendly, for those who don't understand ADB. Apps for logcat can be found in the marketplace
[SIZE=+1]Q10: What does odexed and de-odexed mean and what is the difference between the two?[/SIZE]Please read HERE
[SIZE=+1]Q11: What is CWM Recovery (ClockWorkMod Recovery) and TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project)?[/SIZE]They are recovery program's that allows you to backup / restore a full or partial system backup of your device. They also allow you to install flashable .zip files; which is one of the primary installation methods for custom ROMs. They also provides other features such as cache and delvik wiping, battery reset, and other processes. If you are thinking about flashing custom ROMs or just want a really good backup program, it's strongly advised that you to install one of these.
[SIZE=+1]Q12: What is the 'Flash Counter'?[/SIZE]Your phone's "Flash Counter" is triggered when it detects custom firmwares. This is Samsung's way of knowing that your device has been modified. Please read HERE to understand what this does and how to fix it.
[SIZE=+1]Q13: What is a ROM?[/SIZE]A rom is like a custom firmware image that is made by a Developer either entirely from scratch, or based off of the official firmware package. Some ROMs contain simple changes like changing icons and adding extra options to things, other more complicated ROMs can change the entire Android experience. Which one you will want to flash, will be entirely up to you. Read carefully, and make sure you understand what you are getting into before you flash.
[SIZE=+1]Q14: What is a Kernel?[/SIZE]A kernel is the heart of the device's OS. In simplest terms it’s a connection between your apps and your device’s hardware; i.e. the processor, RAM, etc. A custom kernel can dramatically change the way your device’s hardware performs… for the better and/or the worse]
[SIZE=+1]Q15: What is a Bootloader?[/SIZE]The bootloader is a program code that is executed before the device OS starts up, and that instructs that device to boot “normally”. The bootloader can come locked or unlocked from the manufacture. A unlocked bootloader will allow you to install custom ROMs & Kernels (as well as some other neat things) on your device.
[SIZE=+1]Q16: What is the best rom for my phone?[/SIZE]While you can ask this as many times as you wish, the only answer is: the one that works best for you! A rule of thumb is to visit a several rom thread's and view what is happening within these rom's. Eventually viewing a few roms will cause the urge to try one that looks good to you.
[SIZE=+1]Q17: What is the MD5, and what does it do?[/SIZE]It ensures that file's are downloaded correct and complete, in order to avoid issues when installing/using it.

Nice list! This is bound to really reduce clutter in Q&A. Just one thing, you might want to add the differences between TW/ASOP i get that question all the time.
Edit: Also the whole i317/i317m thing

Just use caution with links that are taking people to threads for other devices. For example the what is a flash counter answer takes you to the gs3 thread.

Hey Tony, I've been searching for information on Apps2SD for this phone and while I will find it (the information) on my own, I think a mini compendium of sorts would make sense in the FAQ section. Unless of course this is a "Google removed the function, end of story," situation.

To an extent I agree, however that would be better suited in a Q&A then a FAQ.
May I suggest adding "what is a modem"
And then laying out the whole dif(or lack there of) between basband/modem/radio. Also in the kies faq I would like to suggest mentioning the kies EFR. Its a very effective and usefull tool.

When you carrier unlock a device it remains unlocked no matter how many roms or recoveries you flash. My note 2 is unlocked and works just fine.
The bootloader is not locked. Flash a recovery using Odin. Twrp is great.

Another one you can use once you're rooted is ROM Manager from Play Store and flash CWM (ClockWorkMod) that's what I've been using.

Is this method working for N750? If so where cah we get the bootloader?
Days ago I came across two files to restore KNOX counter to 'inside of Note 3 normal. Deepening the 'argument I noticed that you can also reset the Notes 3 Neo. I came to the conclusion that the KNOX, is nothing but a reprogrammable chip that claims to be an E-FUSE. I am attaching the files that I extracted. These files main work on "Bootloader" in practice, looking with a version editor for Notes 3 bypassed, I see that many things have changed. I am attaching the version with the reset KNOX per Note 3 (sboot.bin) and the version of '' sboot.bin "unedited excerpt from the original firmware of Note 3 Neo (N7505). Look carefully. They have changed things very clear. If someone is an expert Modding or is good at bypassing the protections can help me very well. Come on guys, now I am more than certain that the solution is close. Force !!!

Flashing MDL ROM and Baseband

Hi all folks. Its been now almost one week(I've lost count of the opened tabs in my browser ) since I've started looking for a unlocking solution on my GT I9195(LTE version). Its locked on EE(UK) and according to some sources there is really no free method to unlock this particular device on this particular carrier. BUT, through my research I've found that I should mess up with PERSO SHA256 ON/OFF selection, which is not available on my device. So to make it available, according gurnted, I should flash MDL ROM and Baseband of my device, but I really have no clue what MDL stands for in the first place, let alone finding from where I do get these firmwares.
So, I would really like if someone could help me get directions and clues about these firmwares for my device...
Thanks XDA for making possible such a great place on the Internet.
Best regards.

Galaxy Watch SM-R800NZSAXAR Won't boot. Need help With Odin and FW version.

Hello.
Long time lurker, 1st time subscriber here.
I have a Galaxy watch, 46mm, SM-R800NZSAXAR. US version, non LTE. I have it with the latest firmware that was released for it about a month or two ago. I just dont know the serial for that FW version.
My issue is that, the Watch, suddenly turned off, and when i try to boot it up, it shows the "Samsung Galaxy Watch" logo, and turns off again. I can access the download mode, the Odin mode and have even tried the "Recovery" option but this does not work.
I've read on other threads that I can try to re-flash the FW to the device via NetOdin and the right FW version and that MIGHT help getting it back up working. Thing is, i have NO IDEA what FW version to get. I see all sort of numbering but i cannot tell which one should i get, and the information i have come accross is confusing.
So, could you guys point me in the right direction, so maybe i get the proper FW and try to repair my watch? I've already talked with Samsung Customer Support, and they want me to send the device for repair... thing is I'm not in the US no more, and that'd be a real pain in the ass.
Thank you in advance.

I understood the Alphabet reference. I was thinking it had something to do about it but was not sure.
Anyway, i followed your "advice" and downloaded the FW, flashed it, the procedure finished properly (NetOdin said it was successful), Watch restarted, and NOTHING happened. It's still not booting. Just shows the logo and turns off again. So I'm thinking is really a hardware problem. I'm gonna have to send it back to the USA for repairs and hope they honor the warranty.
I still dont understand why cant I buy the product in one country and get service for it in another if it's withing the warranty time.... but w/e.
Thanks man for your help. This will deter me from buying anything Samsung for awhile.
Sorry to read about no real success...
If you have time... you could check ODIN Mode... look here as example:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73607036&postcount=1
You could upload Photo if you want... or write all infos as text...
Maybe Warranty Void value allready changed...
Best Regards
Edit 1.
Here is Video about Galaxy Watch... how to enter and leave Odin aka Download Mode:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i38frp0xqyU
But my eyes can not see the Values...
Code:
0 (0x0000)
This is "best"...
All other Values are not good in case of warranty...

Hello.
This is the data you requested:
ODIN MODE
Product name: SM-R800
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
REACTIVATION LOCK: Off
Secure Download: Enabled
CARRIER ID:
WARRANTY VOID: 0 (0x0000)
AP SWREV: B:1 K:0 S:0
I have absolutely no idea what happened with the device. It just wont boot beyond the logo.
If you have something else i could try, lemme know. Getting if service by an official samsung rep will be a daunting task, since is a US device and i Dont live in the US... is covered with a warranty tho. I just have to jump thru a lot of hoops to send it there.
Thanx for info.:good:

Official looks good... otherwise something like Custom....
REACTIVATION LOCK: Off

OFF is IMHO better as ON if you have trouble... = less Security
WARRANTY VOID: 0 (0x0000)

All Zero is best... otherwiseyou got more problems for Service Repair... but as you told... other contry = nearly NO chance...
IMHO
I would test this Factory/Service Firmware...
Code:
OXA_[B]COMBINATION[/B]-FT40_R800XXU1ARI2.tar.md5.zip
If this Firmware starts complete on your SM-R800... check if WiFi and BT is usable...
Then you could try to flash again Stock Firmware...
Again.
OWN risk... not official supported by Samsung because leaked Tool + leaked Firmware...
Best Regards

I'm making arrangements to send it to Samsung US to get it repaired. If all fails, then I'll get my hands dirty again. It's still covered by the warranty, the problem is to get it to Samsung US hands for repair.
Thanks for your help tho. I'll keep this bookmarked for future reference.

I solved the problem with my watch in the following way:
1. Firmware R800XXU1DSL1 (available at 4pda) using the standard method, but you MUST include the Phone Bootloader Update check box in Odin. Then press Start, Odin will update the firmware and swipe a new loader to fix the problem. It helped me, I also tried to repair the clock for 2 weeks with the same problem and wanted to carry them to the service.
