I've a new one with 4.1.2 stock and none of method here works until I see this post and got recovery-hercules-6.0.4.3.zip installed.
I might write a new guide when I am done, but this one needs to be pinned because I wasted a whole day searching and trying!
Super big thank you :good:
P.S. I used the lastest version of Kinguser from a chinese version of Universal 4.1.2 Root Tool works for me and for those only want root and stay stock.

There is already threads on rooting here. They just are way down the list, but they're there.
Rooting is quite simple and hasn't changed in awhile. Using these tools that seem to be out there can be risky or not work, from what I've seen.
Odin and the appropriate files are all that are needed. Very easy on the S2. And you will still be stock....until you flash something.

And from my experience, Odin 1.85 is still best for flashing recovery.
And for stock 4.1.2 flashing, Odin 3.04.
1.85 to flash any stock images before jelly bean.

I agree

Just want to clarify that the method works but the files or links do not. I got so used to searching the forum but should have search via google to get the required files.
P.S. The SUxx.zip you have at drop box does not flash. I noticed there are 2 new folders in it.

Strange, re-uploaded the su zip. Should be working

Tutorial [noob] How to Install Clockworkmod (CWM) touch/recovery on Galaxy S3 i747.

I was looking for this for a long time and finally found it embeded in a thread here at XDA and thought it would be helpful to have a clean thread.
1) Download correct Clockworkmod (touch or regular as you wish) for your device from http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
2) Place it at the root of your sdcard and rename it recovery.IMG
3) Download and install terminal emulator from the play store : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en
4) Run the terminal and
type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
Don't mess up the command or you WILL brick your phone.
5) Enjoy your Clockworkmod.:victory:
Note: I don't take any credit for this.
If you mess up the block or partition number you MAY not mess or brick your phone, you will BRICK it for sure

Odin?
Wouldn't it be easier and safer to use the Odin program to load Clockworkmod? Less chance of bricking the phone?
The easiest way I've found is to root the phone via Odin, either with Chainfire's autoroot or Mr. Robinson's root 66. The results are pretty much the same but Chainfire's method won't wipe your phone.
After that install ROM manager from the play store and use that to flash CWM, or install Goo Manager from the play store and use that to flash TWRP.
Good write up and I'm not knocking you, but for noobs its better to use odin. Its a ton safer.
EDIT: I meant Odin, not fastboot. I work with a lot of devices and I forgot about it being a Samsung device. Oops.

the problem with using odin is that odin only lets you flash .tar files.... cwm for the att s3 comes as an .img and therefore odin doesn't want to flash it.
i found the easiest way is to root (follow steps in this thread), install MOBILE odin pro (tpb?), and flash the recovery.img through mobile odin pro.
There's a tar file for cwm around here somewhere
not in that post there isn't. the only tar files there are twrp recovery, and the stock recovery...

As many have said already. It is much safer and highly recommended to use ODIN to flash CMW or any recovery for that matter.

Yet another jb guide.

1. you have to be rooted and on STOCK ZV9. the easiest way in my option is to lgnpst. here is a guide http://pastebin.com/g8hXBaaA
use this v9 tot file instead of the v7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091883&highlight=tot
2. you need to root v9 with this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050582
3. you need to download the update zip and rename it update.zip. http://d-h.st/0a9
4. you need to move update.zip to /cache using a file explorer (this is why you need root)
5. reboot into stock recovery. get into stock recovery by holding vol down+ home button+ power button until captive lights flash then release.
for some people programs such as romtoolbox's rebooter works and for others it doesnt but you can try.
6. choose "apply update from cache." then "update.zip"
7. you are now running JB.
8. restore root by using root keeper
9. if you want to reroot use the same method for zv9 above
Congrats, you have rooted jellybean!
LASTLY! Im not responsible for what you do to your phone!!!

so i made an actual guide because i did this in the car since kc removed his at the time.
here is the updated version which shouldn't cause a brick except for a few that make a mistake here or there.
Noob Question about this guide
First of all, thank you all for what you do for the Android community
I am obviously a noob, so please bear with me.
I recently used engine95's guide to root and unlock my Sprint LG Optimus G. It was simple and worked perfectly. I have not yet had a chance to attempt flashing any rom's and just noticed that I can actually have Jelly Bean now. So, I am rooted and unlocked. I have recently downloaded Titanium Backup, FreeGee, ROM Manager, Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, and ES File Explorer. I chose TWRP during the unlock procedure with FreeGee. I am now running Titanium Backup on everything (seems to be stuck at 96% with YouTube).
I am about to run through javskies guide to flashing JB (this guide just made more sense to me). I am hoping Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper will keep me from having to root again after the update, but if not, I think I can handle rooting again.
My main questions are:
1) I noticed something in another post about uninstalling FreeGee due to its current incompatibility with JB. Is this correct?
2) Looking at step 4 of javskies guide
4. you need to move update.zip to /cache using a file explorer (this is why you need root)
Click to collapse
, I noticed that I do not see a file named 'cache' either when using ES File Explorer or Windows Explorer. (I haven't figured out how to paste a screenshot into a post, so I attached a JPEG screenshot.)
3) Because I did not see the /cache folder, I looked at the Flashing Guide and now I am even more confused because the steps for
ROM update without SDcard
Click to collapse
seem a bit out of my leauge...or maybe I am being lazy.
4) How would you all handle a wife/significant other who wants to kill me for spending hours on end reading through posts?
Honestly, if I can grasp how to manage the .zip file correctly in this procedure, I am sure I will be fine.
Because I know it matters...quick thanks to javskies, engine95, fiddy619, and kc_exactly for (unknowingly) getting me this far. Also to _Epic, who apparently is losing his patience with Android illiterates, like myself
Good grief, I hope this post ends up looking right...it is my very first time posting...(just noticed the 'preview' button.)
Thanks guys!
Cache is a folder in the root directory. That is the very bottom of directories. If your rooted you will see it. Put the file there.
And freegee is not compatible for the jelly bean update. So, you are correct to remove it. It will cause a soft brick.
The app is safe just sitting there. But if you run it after the update you will have problems. So, I would remove it for now. Out of sight, out of mind.
Part of the steps to fix the soft brick will be too format the whole phone. So, remove it. The creator of the app is a very active member here on xda. He is working on a fix. Just check back on xda. We will all know when it is fixed.
And it doesn't bother me what guide you use. If you read the bottom of my guide it is basically the same as this one.
I am not a hater. I like to help everyone. There is no competition.
The update process is confusing for new people. There is no way around it. Just follow the steps and you will be fine.

As for the wife. Just say what we all do.
"Honey, I am sorry, I have to fix my phone."
Or
"Hey, one sec, I have to fix my phone"
Basically, any combination of something like that usually works.

Also just a heads up, after u download esfile explorer, u need to go to settings and way towards the bottom there r root settings. Make sure u have the appropriate options checked so u can back out of your sdcard folder. Super user will ask u to grant permission once u check the first option. Grant it. That way u can get to that cache folder that you need.

Actually, shelnutt had a way but he said there was also a risk of bricking my phone. I told him I couldnt because I dont have insurance nor do I have a backup phone. I will do it his way within time once I can get a backup phone. Hopefully, within two months.
He also said there were many people in the same situation that can't unlock phone. He's also trying to find the problem and work out a solution in the future.

Titanium Backup is an example of such an app. It may incorrectly detect the path to your internal storage for backups, and thus crash on backup/restore. E98010P Rooting

I usually don't post and I mostly just follow your all direction and accomplish what I need. While doing my research for Rooting my LG Optimus G Pro I have seen that if you have the updated version of the phone you can't root. Now my phone is completely stock 4.1.2, kernel 3.4.0, E98010P. Can someone direct me in the right way or link to a How-to root an E98010P?
I figured out a way to work on my LG Optimus G Pro running 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with E98010p. Watch this Youtube vid, Its a chinese root but he shows you how to make it english.
Just gave this a shot and it worked!!! Really didn't want to go through the hassle of using the flash tool again just to regain root.

I'm nervous to try.

Thanks JL969u for posting video. Since my phone kept telling me that it is not registered yet any time I tried built in updater I figured I give this a try. I downloaded the BIN_LGE980AT-00-V10p-ATT-US-NOV-22-2013+0.zip, the used LGflashtool to flash to my phone. Then followed direction in the video. Now have E98010P plus root.
this worked great for me on a windows 8.1 pc and e9810p software version no flahing required very easy thanks to the poster of the video

I downloaded the BIN_LGE980AT-00-V10p-ATT-US-NOV-22-2013+0.zip, the used LGflashtool to flash to my phone. Then followed direction in the video. Now have E98010P plus root.

I followed all the directions until I got to when you start up the regular superuser app to update the binarys and it says the program has stopped and I cant get any further. help! exact steps: used chinese vroot, then installed root browser, root checker, and superuser english version. verified root with root checker and it was good. installed superuser program, opened it to update binaries, and program just says program failed and closes....

[Q] Please Help: VK810 4.4.2 TWRP

Ok, I deeply apologize if I missed it somewhere but I have searched high and low for clear cut instructions to get TWRP installed on the Verizon G Pad. (VK810) I am already rooted. If someone could link to the thread that I missed somewhere or give me the instructions that would be great. Thank You. I know there are not a lot of ROM's but i just want to get split screen viewing mode enabled, and i need TWRP for that. Thanks

Yeah I've been there but it says it's for 4.2.2 ONLY.
It's going to take some reading and research but it's noted here.

can you explain how you were able to root? I have tried Stump, IOroot, Towelroot and saferoot to no avail. I am running 4.4.2. Current version is KOT49i.vk81022b. Thanks in Advance and more thanks if you can point me in the right direction.

Towelroot worked fine for me. There's a thread for it, and it is WORK, but it can be done. I will have to wait until I get home to find and link the thread for you though. VK810, Version VK81011A, 4.2.2.
I rooted with stump root, with no issues.

Ran into issues with Stump. Towelroot worked fine, but the links to the files are down and I'm a still in noob territory. I have Dropbox, Mega, and Box. I can upload everything to either, with very simple instructions, or if you tell me where you want it, I'll get it there. I'll even zip the whole thing and email it to you if it'll help.

Hey do you think that root method would work on the Verizon version 4.4.2 VK81023A? This version just came out and I'm struggling to root it. Or if there is a way to downgrade please let me know. Thank you so much

My mistake. I should have just pointed you in the direction of the appropriate thread... Which I don't know how to do yet. Give me 5 minutes...

Here you go. Works flawlessly. Just did this again last night. This will downgrade you to 4.2.2 then just download and install towelroot, root your tablet, install SuperSU, Busybox and you're on your way.

I rooted with stump without any problems on this version. I am struggling to get twrp/cwm installed, and i believe the current loki_flash seems to not work.
