Hi All,
I went and looked at the HTC One M8 today and was very very impressed. Looking to uograde from an s4 to the M8.
The salesmen said something interesting though and after a little research I am concerned.
He said that 3rd party apps will not be able to access the sd card at all. I know there have been conplaints about this in regards to KitKat.
As I live in Australia all the plans have horribly low data so cloud really isnt an option here, especially to store music and video.
I was just wondering if this were true? Are they able to be installed on the sd? are they able to write to sd?
Thanks for any advice

Just tried and yes you can but I am rooted don't know if that's why it moved
I'm not rooted. Using solid file explorer, I'm not able to write to the card. Very frustrating.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
It's a new security feature of Kit Kat, stops apps from having full read/write access to the whole sd card. The developers just need to update there apps to resolve the issue. I had the same problem moving files across but came across the answer in another thread on here.

root it..
This is a feature of google kitkat 4.4.2. Anyway is supposed to work with default file manager. If not, you need to root and instal Sdfix from play store.

Root and install SDFix from playstore or root it and flash a custom ROM. AFAIK all the custom roms have that fixed by default now without having to install an app.

I tried the SDFix on stock rooted rom, but titanium backup still cant write on SD card. (It says: this folder is not writable) i even tried modifying system/etc/permissions/platform.xml manually but still no luck.
Is it an issue with titanium backup, or am i doing something wrong?

You need to flash a custom kernel with system write protection turned off then you can use something like SDfix or foldermount to enable writing to the external SD for all apps
Try Elemental kernel, it worked for me.
Stock and rooted here and sdfix worked fine. Titanium and all other apps write to SD fine.

No, not true! I am on stock rom / kernel, just rooted and SDFix installed, and Titanium and all other apps read /write on extSD. No custom kernel requied!

Tried using the SDFix. Checked the permission.xml file. The changes has been made. However, once restarted the phone, changes have been revoked.
Using stock rom/kernel, rooted. Still no luck...seriously wtf.
Workaround for storing/modifying files on SD card
Hey guys,
I'm myself in shock what Google did in KitKat - that's just pure stupidity.
However, I'd like to share with you a simple hint on how to actually make use of SD card, using tTorrent as an example.
As you know, it is no longer possible to select a directory on SD card to store downloaded data - apps no longer have permissions, including file browser in Polaris Office. Well... it is not entirely true.
Let's say you want to select a directory on SD card, so tTorrent has as much space as big your SD card is.
All you have to do is to select a directory which your app has an access to.
What's the directory? It's the directory of particular app:
/storage/ext_sd/Android/>>your app's directory<<
In particular case of tTorrent that would be:
/storage/ext_sd/Android/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.lite/
That's all. If you select above path in tTorrent, tTorrent will have a full access within it, so it can create/modify/delete files in this directory.
The same rule applies to any other apps - all you have to do is to select your app's directory/put files in it and your app will be able to fiddle with these files, inside its directory on SD card.
I know it is not as elegant solution as rooting device and modifying /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file, but at least it's something.
Have fun, folks, and let's wait for an update from crazy Google - I heard that they are receiving tons of complaints about this "security feature" which I personally call simply a bug.
So that's the problem with KitKat?? For example I couldn't unpack zip on sd card, I had to unpack it to the internal memory. Since m8 hasn't default explorer, is there any explorer that doesn't have this issue, or I strictly have to root it??

Im running Quantum V3, 4.4.1 KitKat on AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3. Last night I played around with phone, unmounted SD card cuz I needed to check my battery drainage. After I remounted it, ESfile explorer says that sdcard1 has "Invalid path". Even tho in settings > storage, it shows that there is sd card and how much space there's left on it...
I did a clean flash of the ROM before if that matters. I don't wanna reflash it and arrange all the apps all over again...
Also when I check the sd card through the app folders, aka in storage/sdcard1, it shows files and everything. What could be the issue that I cant get it to work?

Probably one of the bugs with the latest update by PwnCakes. Maybe you didn't unmount properly, or try formatting the sd card and plug it in again?
I have the same exact thing.
Sigh, at least I'm not alone xD
And I didn't try formatting, got 27 gig stuff on my SD card and unfortunately no space on HDD to copy all the stuff :/
Shame I ain't got enough posts to reply in PwnCakes thread...
I think it might actually be a bug within the rom itself OR ES file explorer. I had this bug since I think a few releases ago
I have the exact same problem. Under "device", i have two copies of extSDcard. I also get the "invalid path" when i tap on sdcard1. I guess i'll wait for a fix, as i don't want to uninstall ES File Explorer, and reinstall, just to lose everything.

Temporary ES File Explorer Workaround for SD Card and Ext SD Card
Sorry it took so long. Just got done finals and had to get the bus. Below is the settings that you guys can use to make it almost as if nothing was wrong with ES.
Set your directory settings for Home to the External SD Card
Change the default window settings to the following: Sdcard, Home, whatever else you want loaded AFTER these
This will make it so that the first loaded 'window' of ES is the device's internal memory. Then it will load the external SD card as the second 'window'. As long as you check it in the proper order, it will load just fine.

I'll be honest with you. I check play d store almost daily to see if there is anything new with ES. I don't know. It might be a problem with the selinux transition from 4.3 to 4.4. It could be a million things but I think its just some back end code for the file system. :/

@grunt0300 if you really want, I can take a look into the permission.xml. however, no way I am making the commits to my device at the moment. All I know (without looking up the exact wording) is that in permissions.xml is a line for read external storage and that line is set to media/mnt/sdcard instead of storage/sdcard1.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 4
The first thing that bothered me after updating to stock 4.4.2 is the lack of SD card write for media.
Well here i fixed that, (ROOTED users only)
using your root explorer, navigate to /system/etc/permissions/
now look for "platform.xml" back up this file somewhere in case anything goes wrong.
now replace this file with the modified file attached, set correct permissions and reboot!
In case anyone is wondering what change is in the modified file, it is a permission added to write media to sdcard, ( "<group gid="media_rw" />" under external storage)
unzip the attached file (it should read platform.xml), and do leave the feedback.

This doesnt change the directory, only allows the apps to write to sd card.

Well part of the reason why I prefer Android is the learning and understanding that comes with messing around with it, so I prefer modifying the system as per my needs
With that said, if the app doesn't require to be kept after fixing the issue it's definitely a good option for the ones who don't want to go with all the trouble.

You can thank Google/Android for deciding user needs are irrelevant. The only way you are going to write to the external SD card on an unrooted stock ROM is use Samsung-provided tools like their lousy file manager and gallery. Third party apps are useless unless you are willing to root and ruin your warranty.
As you all know that KitKat is denying the phone to write on SDcard.
Actually I was trying to move some apps , Data , and also the by default locations used by the apps to write on SD card via ES file manager and respected apps..
But it's not allowing me to do so..Or at extreme all the downloaded files from those apps goes to "Com.app.xys/files/Download"
But it's can't be saved on the ext_sdcard/ is there any solution?

Hi, [email protected]
It's only third party user installed file managers that are subject to the SD-card write restriction. File managers which are part of the operating system CAN write to the SD-card without problems.. AND WITHOUT ROOT.
So, if your M8 is running HTC Sense, and isn't a Google Play Edition version... there should be, in the app drawer, an HTC file manager.
This file manager was released with the Android 4.4.3 update, and has received updates from HTC via PlayStore since then.
It's not as fancy as the ES File Manager, or similar found on PlayStore... but it'll get the job done... creating folders, copying, moving, renaming and deleting stuff on your SD-card.
Look for it in your app drawer... The icon is white, with a green trim. (See attached screenshots below.)
I use it frequently on my unmodified, unrooted M8 to copy stuff over to my SD-card.
Hope this helps.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Just got the h815 (cze with rom v10aEURxx) .
It seems that some apps cannot write to external sd (e.g. Solid Explorer) .
Since I am not rooted yet (did not even attempt to unlock bootloader) I cannot use apps to correct external sd permissions (such as SDfix which requires root) .
Meanwhile I manage external sd writes with MyFiles and with ES Explorer.
Can someone suggest how to enable Solid Explorer SD card access without root?
I still wait for an xda developed root method which is reversible.
Thanks
You can't, but root explorer will let you manage files on external card though.

Fair point. G.Photos is certainly reading the external SD perfectly well but it can't delete things there. You need to use Gallery of a a suitable file explorer for that.
The stock camera does store photos to the SD now. It's just offered me that option.
For me the important thing was that my FX Explorer and TI Backup etc be able to write to the ExtSD and they now do.
Cheers
