My buddy has an LG G2 which has this feature that allows you to double tap on the screen to wake up the device. Is this possible on the note 3 either innately or with the help of an app?
Sorry to revive this thread, but i have the same question
You can get this on a rooted note 3. Some custom kernels and roms offer this functionality.

Which one
Someone should just make it a flashable zip and include the kernel needed or explain what kernel is needed before flashing. I too would be interested in a double tap to wake/sleep

I had the G2 for only a week and I still find myself double taping the note 3 sceen to wake it. +1 on this mod.
I want this feature too.
Needs to be implemented on the kernel side of things....why not just "tap" your home button?
gonna search a rom with this feature, please tell me if you are using one

It's not just about waking the phone but the double tap to sleep is why I'd like it mostly. Plus less wear and tear on the physical home button
I' used to home button also but double tap to sleep would be a great feature too

Are you guys forgetting about the Quick Glance feature on the phone? Or is it just hated in general. Does not put any wear and tear on the physical home button, but also wont add to the finger print mess already on the screen. Only drawback is that it does not work if the phone is not on a flat surface (which i think is the case for the double tap feature on the LG G2, i could be wrong though).
I activate this more on accident than doing in intentionally when i try to reach over my phone.
To enable (disable) and customize Quick Glance on Note 3, do as follows:
1. Open Settings and go to Controls
2. Under Motion Control, make sure Air Gesture is enabled, and then tap on Air Gesture
3. Tap on Quick Glance and use the sliding button on the top right to enable (or disable) it
4. To customize the information you want to see, you can check or uncheck the following information: Notification icons, Missed calls, Unread messages, Battery power and Current music info (Time & Date are always shown)
5. To use Quick Glance feature, put your device on a flat surface facing upwards, and when the screen is off, move you hand above the sensor Locate on the top right

Lol quick glance doesn't wake your phone. It's not the same thing we're taking about. And the lg g2 you can double tap to wake/sleep with the phone at any angle
I disabled quick glance, I dont use it at all.

Howdy, gentlemen (and gentleladies) I have quite a few questions regarding the note 2. I know my way around android, these are about the device itself. As questions are answered, I will update the OP with the solutions / answers for reference, so others might learn from my ignorance
I bought a flip cover case, not the genuine samsung case, but one off ebay. It doesnt have an indentation for the home button so it is constantly being turned on. Is there a fix, preferably without rooting, for this? Maybe using the proximity sensor?
With the same flip case, I would like to know if it is at all possible to have the devices screen automatically turn on when it is opened, and turn off when it is shut? (Think "iPad with its magnetic cover") Possibly through the use of NFC tags or proximity sensor? The proximity sensor would have obvious issues with other things interfering. SOLUTION FOUND: DOWNLOAD "SIMPLE COVER LOCK" FROM PLAY STORE.
Are there mods that allow selecting something using the S-Pen's button, while it is in the air? Maybe using it to highlight text while in the air or click the button to register an input? I do a lot of copy and pasting and a feature like this can greatly improve productivity.
Is it possible to get the S-Pen to be able to push the soft keys? I absolutely hate having to continually change my hand posture whenever I need to access the back key or open a menu. Maybe, building on my previous question, have some sort of air gesture with the S-Pen button depressed that performs the actions of the soft buttons? WORK-AROUND, NO TRUE SOLUTION YET: GESTURE < AND ^ WITH S-PEN BUTTON DEPRESSED FOR BACK AND MENU ACTIONS, RESPECTIVELY
My last question is simple. Is the LED indicator an RGB LED? Like the one on the galaxy nexus that can be changed to any color? It would be cool to have different notification colors per app, blue for facebook, green for messaging and so on. ANSWER: YES
I appreciate the help, normally I would use my Google-fu but I much prefer answers from other users.

I can somewhat answer the first question. There are apps that allow you to use the proximity sensor to turn off and on the screen. A couple that I've personally tried are Intellicover and Auto Screen on. There's also Screen Lock and Off that allows you to turn off your screen by tapping a button. These work well, but if your flip cover is constantly bumping the home button, using these apps won't do anything different as your home button will still get bumped and then the screen will constantly turn on.
the best app to use for turning on the screen automatically is "simple cover lock" its a small free app that does just what it says it was created for the note 2 and does what it needs to really good
For the menu & back button question, hold the button on your s pen & draw a < on the screen to go back & a ^ for the menu
Edit: Also, Light Flow from the play store let's you control the LED lights

Thanks, seems to work fine for a beta, although it does show my homescreen for a second after the flip cover opens before going to the lock screen, even if it was already on the lockscreen when I shut it. I've never seen that happen with any lockscreen alternative, must be a bug. also, it gets kind of annoying if I accidentally move my hand over the proximity sensor and it shuts the display off, but the note is so big that this occurs rarely. Nonetheless, thanks

to fix the screen turning off when you move your hand over you would need to change the "turn off screen after" time to 5 so it would take longer to turn off when you closed the cover, i dont have the lockscreen bug on my rooted note 2 running a 4.1.2 samsung rom
I see, ill do that! I dont plan on rooting anytime soon, so I guess I have to live with it.

Another widget i decided to share with you peoples
I noticed by default there is a "Assistive light" widget for us to put on the home screen. It toggles the flashlight on or off. Well its really dim so i wrote my own widget to do the same thing. This one however gets put on the lockscreen so just swipe over and tap and boom you got a light
May add options for light levels.
Should work on all GS4 variants, only tested on T-Mobile variant.
TO INSTALL:
Simply install the apk, then in your app drawer look for "Flashlight options" and click it to set up your options. (The icon is a flashlight btw xD)
UPDATE 10.28.13:
- Added levels adjustment
- Remove widget and re-add to update after installing new APK
Then create your widget on your lockscreen and profit
Works perfectly thus far and exactly what my phone has been missing. THANK YOU!!

Same for me! Prolly gonna add the brightness buttons to it soon too.
What do you guys think? Three buttons, one for dim, half, and full brightness? Or a positive and negative button to adjust brightness in one by one increments? I think the three buttons would be quicker to adjust the brightness.

Any way this can be added to the lock screen where I don't need to swipe to get to the widget? Ideally, I'd hit the Home or Power button to turn on the phone, then either use your flashlight widget, or swipe to go to the home screen. I'm a beginner on playing with the lock screen, but a flashlight like yours (excellent job on the 3 settings!) is really the only thing I'd like to access that quickly.
Any way to use this as a home screen app? Ever since I've been on Android, I've missed the 3-level flashlight I had on WinMo 6.5 on my old HD2.
Great effort on this, thanks!

You can tap and hold my widget on your lockscreen and drag it to the RIGHT most "page" on the lockscreen and it will be the first thing you see when you turn on your screen.
Meaning, tap and hold my widget on your lockscreen, and move your finger to the right of your screen until you see the gray squares stop moving.
Thanks, elesbb! Got it working. Now if I could only get the big clock I normally see to show along with your light, it would be perfect, although it seems only one widget per screen is allowed? Again, I'm a noob about lockscreens.
You really make some cool additions to the phone.

Yes, only one widget per screen, currently working on an app that will hold a widget within a widget (not looking to promising) so i may have to edit the actual smali files itself to add say two widgets per screen. (thats something i REALLY want) so once we finally get a sammobile tar of 4.3, i will be working on mods for my ROM and that is one that i widh to add.
Just curious as to what everyone has found to make it easier to turn off the M8 instead of reaching all the way to the top for the power button, which can be awkward. I know there is a knock at the top of the screen, but that is almost as bad as reaching for the button. Any other options/suggestions?

What exactly do you mean? Are you talking about turning off the screen as BigAl assumed, or are you talking about powering down the device?
use the nav bar on custom roms to change their attributes .
I use double tap on home to turn the screen off, also double tapping the notification bar works (viper rom)

Yes, just screen off/lock. I have a custom rom and they just have the swipe or tap at the top of the screen which is the same as reaching for the power button if not more difficult (tried Viper). I'm on Revolution 5 right now and really like it...just want a better way to lock the device...double tapping home sounds good. Is there a downloadable app or flashable addon compatible with Revolution?

If you by turning off mean sleep, then:
Swipe2sleep isn't really needed in ARHD rom, as the Sense6 Toolbox allows you to customize the behaviour of the control bottons in the nav bar.
I've just setup long-press the home botton to sleep. Works fine and easier than swipe (IMO)
I use widgetsoid, create an invisible toggle button to turn the screen off which fills the bottom half of my screen so one click off without ruining my homescreen.
I use a Dot View case and close lid...does that count...

Hi all. New on this phone, I've searched for this but could not find, so maybe someone here could help me. Is there a gesture to quickly turn off screen (had a gesture on my old nexus that was double tapping home button)?
Thanks in advance!
You could try 'Edge sense plus' (check the play store) to use the squeeze function to turn off the screen instead of launching the assistant. Personally I use nova launcher and swipe up to turn off the screen.
I'm sure there are other alternatives as well, but that's my 2 cents

Is that the app that costs 1,77? Wich are the possible gestures for screen off?
Do you have the possibility to use the fingerprint sensor to turn screen off?

Yeah it does cost some money but I can't remember exactly how much. There is a native screen lock option for Android 9+ and I don't think there is any fingerprint gesture. It's primarily for the edges of your screen.

You could try turning on accessibility menu in the accessibility settings if you don't mind having a small icon to the right of the pill at the bottom of the screen. When you click it, there are several options given and lock screen is one. It's not a simple gesture swipe or a simple double tap but it may be an option.

Tried that, and it works, it appears a person button, and when you press it, it gives a lot of options, and the lock screen is one of them. I will keep using until a easier solution if found. I can not believe android will not include a gesture option for this by default.
I hate to have to press a button to lock the screen, they end up breaking/wearing so fast.
Thanks all for your responses, and other solutions are welcome. Cheers! :good:

It works and adds functionality to accesibility. Nice contribution! Thanks! Although will be using this, i'm open to other possibilities. Loving this phone!
