What is expected of dev support? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm considering going with either the m8 or s5 for AT&T. I'm not looking for a which phone is better. Just curious what kind of dev support is expected with this device. How was the development with the original one? Are there any considerable differences with official help from Samsung vs HTC?

thinking of changing from a gs3 to nexus

Hi there I have a rogers gs3 and I am thinking of switching to a nexus. I love the gs3 but I also love installing ROMs and unfortunately there are not that many at&t/ rogers ROMs out there. Not even a single miui ROM
I have been reading g up on the specs for both phones and I don't see a big difference in either phones.
What's your take on the phones? Am I making a right choice if I switch phones?
Also what section of the forums would I be looking in for ROMs for the rogers nexus?
I would say it depends on what is important to you. if flashing ROMs(customizing) is what you prefer then go for the nexus.
and yes your are correct ..there is not a big difference or gap on hardware between the two.

They just unlocked the boot loader on the S3...something to consider now as well.

I think that was only an issue on the VZW version no?
If you love your ROMs then this is the phone for you. I love my GNex!
Definitely better if you really wan't the customizations, the newest android first and stable clean android.
However the hw on the nexus does lack behind the gs3 hw quite a bit.
Thanks for all your responses. I really like different ROMs so I am going to get the nexus tomorrow
GS3 is superior to GNexus (powerful cpu, better camera, and so on).. And if you can wait other GS3 roms will be developed in the next future..
If you really want to customize a lot your device I'd wait to the NEXT nexus phone
Cyanogenmod 10 is already really stable.. have you tried it? I'm using it very happily on my gs3 right now.
And hardware differences between the phones is significant.

I went from the htc one x which is as good as the s3 and came to my senses and went to a nexus just because I realized that software is so much more important than the hardware and now that I watch phone comparisons I see that the nexys is still competing against all these top tier phones also in a few months the one x and s3 will be beaten by another phone but people will still compare the nexus to the upcoming super phones

I'd pass up slightly better hardware specs for an unlocked bootloader and the latest version of Android any day. The only major drawback for me by going to the GNex from the GSIII is losing LTE.

Might switch phone, SGS 3 vs One X+

Tried looking around, but the online reviews dont satisfy me.
If i exchange my phone from Telus, these 2 are the closest in prices. Galaxys is 430$ (selling my T989 so aint too bad). and One X + is 460$
OneX+ has Quadcore vs the Dualcore from the Samsung, is it really noticeable, i know cores is not necessarily the key point
OneX has 1 gig of ram, Samsung 2gigs.
OneX has 64gigs of internal memory. Galaxy has 16 + sd Slot.
All comes to global. Nevers hard any HTC products.
Will be rooting either, so firmware is not an issue.
Any advice ?
I'd go for the one x.. but I'd check to see where development is going with that phone. I came close to dumping my t989 for a one s but when I checked how are along development was going for it... not a good move.

I've had an HTC before, and all I can say is that they're great, the hardware is good and all, but it comes down to like Rush said, dev support. If you like flashing different ROMs and what not, then go to each of the phones forum sections and check out how their dev support is. I remember I had the choice of the S2 and the Amaze 4G,and I chose the Amaze over the S2, and as much I loved the phone when I got on XDA all it had was root, no AOSP roms, just modified stock Sense Roms. Then theres the whole thing with HTC not releasing the source. When the Amaze was stolen and I got the S2 from T-Mo I was surprised by all the dev support the S2 has and it was that what changed my opinion on Samsungs, which before wasnt really a good one.
Tx.for the input

I would go S3 as well. I've had both brands and prefer Samsung. My og evo was a great phone and has one of the most active developer communities. But I actually don't have the personal need to try a bunch of different roms out with this phone because it feels pretty good out of the gate.

I say s3. The one x is a better phone overall but development will never be as good as the s3.

Galaxy S4 vs HTC One

I own a GS3 but am not due for an upgrade for another year. However, I have saved up enough to purchase one new device and am debating on whether I should purchase the S4 or One because I am amazed by the specs for both and not sure which I should go for. The One would be something completely new for me, not to mention the beautiful design so I keep leaning a bit more towards that but I would also love the S4 for the brand new features but is it really worth getting? I agree with many that it's not that big of an upgrade to the S3 but I absolutely love the idea of having Touchwiz running on the latest android version 4.2.2 and I'm not sure if and when this will be released on the S3. If so then I will probably consider staying with the S3 and just buy the One while I wait for the updates to come to the S3. So as of right now I'm kind of lost on what I should do. Any suggestions? I'm open to opinions from anyone and everyone. Thanks.

My thing before buying a device now a days is one thing, OPEN SOURCE??? that's all I care about lol. If it were me based on looks and functionality, it'd be the One S, it's just so beautiful. The S III will get some of the features the S IV will have, and this phone is plenty capable of handling the future to come of android.
My opinion is you probably meant to ask this question here..

LGOG Google edition?

According to the Pocketnow website, Sony is rumoured to be joining Samsung and HTC to release a Google Edition Experia Z. Considering LG has the current Nexus phone, is there any chance of an LGOG Google edition? There has also been rumours of an updated Nexus 4 with LTE which would be amazing for development on our LGOG.

I don't think so.
If you want a LGOG-like phone from google, you can just buy the Nexus 4 - they have very similar hardware specs.
However OG has MHL and 32gig of flash, that's why I chose it.
Coming from the Samsung Galaxy S (which benefited greatly from the Nexus S) development is still very strong, despite being 3 years old. Seeing as though LGOG is similar to Nexus 4 i thought there would be more development going on. Suppose im desperate for any boost that will help LGOG development. Development is crucial to longevity and getting the most out of this phones great hardware ... can't rely on LG for updates. Maybe i should stop whinging and start learning how to develop. I think there is still hope for an updated Nexus 4 with LTE i.e. an LGOG with different casing.

It would be good to come out always this. After that, there's many advantages LGOG !!
cm is just as sweet as the google experience...next best thing from the open source community.

Is CM going to be made available?

Hey folks,
I am thinking about getting the G3. CM support is quite important for me though. So I am wondering if there will be support to the international version sold by retailers in Germany.
Is there any hint? Do you have any clue?
In case it wouldn't come, it perhaps choose its predecessor the g2.
Cheers!
