Slow/unreliable gps lock and wonky compass - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Anyone else have issues getting gps lock? It will take me several minutes with a clear view of the sky sometimes. If I'm sitting in the back seat of a car I often have to press my phone right up to the window to get a good enough view of the sky and it will lose lock if I take it away from the window.
Also, the compass is all over the place and makes things like gaps walking directions almost useless.

Are youon kitkat? If so, Pls check the 4.4.2 update thread in the general forum where we have a new stock image with fixed gps and battery. See if it applies to your case.

I've noticed the wonky compass. It will vary wildly without any rotation of the phone and, in one orienration, will flip back and forth by 180 degrees very quickly. Thought about warrantying the device, but everything else (including GPS) is solid.
I'm on 4.3.

I have to calibrate the compass occasionally but it works fine for me. GPS normally licks in 10secs or so, but I keep GPS on all the time. It only uses power when you are using an app that uses it.

ive had a compass gps issue for a good while. thought it was the rom, then thought it could have been the case....but im thinking its just happening because i get same performance from jedi's 4.4 release....so not sure what the deal is but same issues....they gave me a gps fix that tends to kinda work.....but its not tracking fluidly and the compass just isnt staying calibrated for very long...its always looking in a different direction.....

Download and install topNTP from the play store give it root access click install at the bottom select create files and reboot.
I use this app after every rom I flash and it gives me a gps lock in literally a couple of seconds even indoors.

My Note 3 doesn't lock on to GPS inside my house at all. Outside, it seems okay, most of the time.
My old HTC Dinc2 locks on without any trouble, inside or out. Not sure if I should do an exchange, since everything else works just fine.

Is this par for the course?

So picked this phone up yesterday and so far the major issues i've come across are:
Random touch screen issue - I'll use the phone normally for a while but sometimes when i'm playing a game (NOVA... which i deleted now) or strolling through a menu (happened in olive tree reader and the amazon store) a small area of the screen will spaz out... it's also happened on the stock lock screen and then persisted a few seconds after I rebooted to get rid of the issue. It's annoying because just as soon as I'm ready to chalk it up as a fluke or some random app issue... it shows up again somewhere else. Now.. this isn't during "one handed operation".. the device is in my left hand.. no fingers on the screen... using my right index finger to do the navigating.
Quite a few apps just don't work - all of my gameloft stuff, Age of Zombies, the video creator app (Samsung... your own freeking app?!?), and a handfull of others either crash immediately, don't start, or crash after seemingly opening just fine. Sidenote... so after a night off it's feet Age of Zombies is working this morning.
signal issues - the reception on this phone it utterly attrocious. I'll go from 5 bars (never the full 6) down to 2 without moving... which means it's a grip issue. I've cupped the bottom portion of the phone (around where the capacitive buttons and the back "lip" are) and watch my signal degrade while removing my hands brings that signal right back... also.. i'm ONE ROOM over from my wireless router and the signal hovers around none to 2 bars on the wifi indicator... HOWEVER... now that I'm at work.. i'm on my corporate wifi.. great reception... cell strength? 5 or 6 bars.... what the feezy.
So.. in a nutshell are these issues normal? should I return this for another unit? I absolutely LOVE this phone... as a pda. It's fast, i dig the large screen, i heart android and touchwiz is actually kinda cool so i may not root this thing with all that said it's just been a little unreliable and I need to be sure that this device will work when i need it to.
Thanks for the input guys.
Reception is a known problem that sprint has acknowledged, they say they are working on a fix.
The screen spazzes out when charging, if it is spazzing out at other times your phone is not normal.
Apps crash sometimes when I start then, but restarting the app usually works fine.
All mobile OS's are beta because they are young. In the 90s windows was even more unstable, and became more stable with time.

If you have probs with apps crashing, try a factory restore. Also check when the app was last updated by the dev, it may just be out of date and written for 2.1

It's not likely to be an outdated app, these were all apps I was using (successfully) on my G2x, until I sold it and bought the GS2 the same day.
I'm glad to know these are KNOWN issues that either have reasonable workarounds or are being worked on. I can deal without games, all of my essentials (productivity apps) are working. Thanks people.

GPS Fix for Epic 4G Touch?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321049
Could we use this GPS fix for our phone? It has really good reviews but I just wanna be careful about flashing stuff :/
Can any knowledgeable developer look into this file and see if it is compatible with our phones?
GPS issue is very prevalent among Epic 4G Touch users and I hope this file could fix our problem.
Thanks!

I honestly didnt even realise that the epic touch had a GPS problem going on. Mine always locks in less than 10 seconds and says accurate within 6-2m. It usually says 2m but on occasion 4 or 6. what are the symtoms of bad gps? I know it will either not lock on quickly or it wont the correct location. But what tecknically is a slow GPS lock on time to within 6m? Like 30 seconds to a minute? And what is considered not being accurate? Like within 15-30m? Im oretty curious. Maybe my 5-10 second lock on time and 2-6m accuracy is considered a GPS malfunction? I just never use it so i cant really know what is considered good or bad. I know mine uodated my position every half second to tge longest taking a full second when i used the car navigation app after putting in my desired address. Please e, plain
GPS never locks on indoors, and it takes at least a minute to lock on outdoors. Also my gps never locks on in a moving car.

GPS should lock outside in a few seconds, it should lock or almost lock indoors within a minute, and it should definitely follow you while driving so that google maps navigation works.
if it is not doing that, take your phone to sprint and get a new one. my GPS was fine when i first got the phone, then a month later it started doing what people complain about, slow lock or no lock, and not following when moving. i complained to sprint twice, paid $35 and got a new phone and now GPS works fine.
the gps tool kit, flashing drivers from the wrong phone, and editing files never gave me a permanent fix. go exchange your phone.

I've had a lot better results by using GPS Status. Before I use anything that requires GPS, I let GPS Status lock on, and I have a lot better results.

Speculative on indoors.... Multiple factors to account for to get an accurate and true lock...
Well I've flashed it and it actually works in my experience. I've let me phone sleep for hours and it has been an improvement over previous fixes.
Still intermittent gps though.
How is everyone going about getting a replacement E4GT? I bought mine on launch day if that changes anything.
Is this something I can do over chat?
For those of you with GPS "problems"...try the following fix next time you have issues. Not sure what causes it, but anytime my GPS starts to suck I do the following and it fixes it instantly.
Menu->Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>
Click on the "All" tab
Click on "Maps" -> Clear cache
Back to list of programs
Click on "Network Location" -> Clear cache
Exit back to home and all should work much fast....at least it does for me
Let me know if this works for you guys...
I am not sure if it is a hardware problem or software but I rooted my phone within the first 24 hours of owning it. I run Calkulins ROM V2.6 [EL13 Kernel] and EL13 modem.
I have no problem locking indoor/outdoor fairly quickly. I did notice the indoor accuracy is slightly less accurate that the Evo 4g I had, but when it comes to locking time, and outdoor accuracy or moving "target" accuracy/lock I have ZERO complaints as of now **knock on wood**

[Q] GPS wandering, any one found a software fix?

I've read just about every post in this forum that even mentions GPS trying to find a solution, but no luck, so I'm asking outright in case I missed something or someone has the answer and hasn't contributed it yet.
My One X has horrible GPS.
I'm not talking about how long it takes to find satellites, it does that quickly enough. What I'm talking about is using an app like My Tracks, Endomondo, Run Keeper, etc to record a track. If I sit the phone perfectly still and let one run, the position and track wander all over the map like a drunken sailor looking for a good time. If I actually move in a straight line, the position shows me blocks away from where I really am. If I try to use a navigation app, the directions are meaningless because the phone thinks I'm as much as 1/2 mile away from my actual position. (I should post a video of that, it's hilarious how bad the directions are.)
Please don't respond if the only problem you've had with GPS is that it took too long to find satellites and downloading someone's aGPS fix app or tweak solved your problem. I've tried all that, multiple times.
I suspect it's just bad hardware, maybe bad antenna connection or something similar, and I'm going to need to replace the phone, but before i go through the hassle of trying to get HTC to replace this dev unlocked phone, I want to make sure there's not a software fix possible. I'm past Expansys' 14 day return window, so HTC is my only option, or possibly my American Express warranty service.
Any thoughts?
The pic is a screen capture of the phone sitting in my parked car in an uncovered parking lot for about 10 minutes. Note how much it wanders around.
Well, no replies, so I guess that means a big NO to any one actually finding a software fix to this particular problem.
For what it's worth, I installed CM9 in the phone and the GPS is still unable to hold an accurate location, so I'm sure it's a hardware issue at this point.
That's a real pisser, since they told me the turn around time on fixing my phone will be 3-4 weeks at the HTC Warranty Repair center in Houston, TX.

I hate to say it, but it must be your unit.
I use GPS navigation very frequently (SoCal, USA) - and coming from a flawless GPS on SGSII, I have to say that HOX GPS is even better. It's more precise - it can even correctly show which side of the road I'm on. Also, driving past intersections is spot-on, which shows how on-the-spot it is.
Did you install any cases, or keep it somewhere where antenna signal may get blocked?

I didn't want to believe it, but I concur it's got to be a hardware issue. No case in it, nothing blocking the antenna. I have same issues even laying it on a patio table out in the open.
I'm also in SoCal...San Fernando valley and the west side of Los Angeles. The one time I tried to use the GPS for navigation it was like getting affections from the three stooges.

Mine does exactly the same. Calibrating the compass an turning wifi off while using gps solves it for me. Gsp is spot on whe wifi turned off... turn it on while navigating and it wonders off road....
I had the same problem, I downloaded GPS Test Plus from the Market, went into settings, selected Clear AGPS and then selected Update AGPS - seems to have been tons better since I did that.
Found this via an Internet search so Kudos to those who discovered it although I apologise I can't remember where I found it!

Yop this I remember even from the iPhone. Accuracy +50m when Wifi or Mobile network assisting with the position. Without max 5 . and not much wandering
Just turn it off in the location. As the breugiek above me suggested.
Thanks for the responses.
As stated in the original post, this is not an aGPS issue. I've tried many aGPS type fixes..Faster fix app, crypted fix and a few others.
I didn't mention it, but I've already tried turning of wifi; it makes no difference.
I suspect bad hardware, specifically something wrong with the antenna.

GPS now working fairly well on this phone. It's not perfect, and requires WiFi off, but other than some initial wandering at startup I'm getting accurate tracks on it.
The fix was to install ARHD 7.0. No idea what changed from earlier versions but it works well enough to put up with until I can get a shorter repair time quote from the warranty center.

GPS is fine. It's the navigation apps that suck.

I've realized that, while using Telenav and Google Navigation, GPS loses signal, over and over again. The only way to get it back is to have GPS Status & Tool run in the foreground. Actually, it won't lose lock as long as that stays in the foreground with the screen on. The navigational apps are not keeping the lock alive. After maybe 20 seconds of them being in the foreground, the "cannot get GPS signal in this area" alert is there to piss the user off, once again. Perhaps, they haven't been optimized for ICS yet?

I know it won't be easy for some to hear this, but if your GPS doesn't work, it may be a hardware issue, not a software/radio problem.
I say this because my E4gT's GPS has worked flawlessly out of the box. I turn it on, get 6-10 locks within seconds, and navigation doesn't cut out (have tested on two 30 min drives and multiple short drives). This is "HTC" good. I even get a lock inside my house quickly.
And BTW, I know what bad/flaky GPS looks like because I had an O.G. Epic which was notorious for poor GPS reception and it lived up to that title.

Damn Thing
If it was software, I would have seen improvement on at least one of the modems I've flashed so far. I've decided I had the ****s of this and have been gradually flashing modems in this list and have yet to see any noticeable difference in SNR or number of locked sats.
Oh sure, if I wave a dead chicken over the phone and hold it up to the dash board (as if were mounted on the vent) the gps is fine, when it eventually locks. If i move it down to where I usually put my phone, the number of visible and locked sats starts to drop and it finally loses lock. It may hold if I perform the appropriate incantations or spit the correct amount of nickles in addition to all the other crap I've tried that was of equal (read no help at all) value.
The hardware in this phone simply gets piss poor gps reception; that is the general trend and like all general trends there are exceptions. Good for you if you're one of the exceptions; doesn't mean there isn't a real issue that effects others and may make the phone useless for navigation. Only thing I haven't tried is replacing the phone which is my next step or simply purchasing a dedicated nav device.
Also, my gs2 i-9100 never had this issue nor did my previous htc phone. I used them both (E4GT & GT-i9100) for a while until I finally sold my i9100 and dropped tmobile; the gps was so much better that I was using the i9100 as a back up. It didn't care where I sat it or how I held it or what the weather conditions were; the damn thing did what it was suppose to do: held a solid and reliable lock (in conditions the E4GT wouldn't) to the degree that I didn't even have to think of it any longer. It just worked; isn't that nice? E4GT users don't know what they are missing!
If I find a modem that gives me really good snr, 25-35 or higher with stable lock under my test conditions, I'll let you know.

Thank you. I'm going to give this a shot. If nothing else, it will kill boredom for a minute.
Edit: Grrr. Got an error "Couldn't install on USB Storage or SD Card".
Edit2: It installed fine with the stock FF11 kernel. I was using Agat's when it was erroring out.
This is what I'm saying because for some folks (me included) Gps works perfect out of the box on stock el29 - fast locks no matter where I put it in the car, inside buildings, etc and working great with Google nav - so if that's not what you are seeing my conclusion would be its bad hardware and Samsung should be on the hook for a replacement.
If it was software then all of you should Odin to stock el29 and simply enjoy the best fastest gps on a smartphone you've owned.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Not sure if you can get into Angry GPS on Agat's ROM, but if you are having issues keep a lock, there are some parameters you can adjust to force your GPS to keep a lock. You would have to search on optimal settings as I can't access dialer settings from CM9.
GPS Aids app may help you as well as it adjusts your GPS.conf file for your location.
Bugger, it's been a while!
I posted a GPS fix here that seems to do the trick for most folks:

And I highly recommend the app Waze. It's pretty cool, an app that is contributed to by the users. Tells you about red light cameras, police, accidents, breakdowns, slowdowns in traffic and more.

I had to reset the tablet from system settings after having both updates installed, when setting up tablet (initial boot) enable all location stuff except for the new android 4.3 wifi location while off option.. Also make sure to disable backup and restore options while doing the initial install.
Now so far GPS has been working steadily ever since first initial boot, no need to reset and power up again and after trying it for an hour all gps apps back and forth its still finding signal sometimes instant sometimes 20 seconds or so but no issues like before this time...
Working like it should now! I guess a hard reset after all updates was needed to reconfigure things!
As long I only use Google Maps, the GPS locks consistently.
If I use other GPS apps (like GPS Status, Gas Buddy, etc.) then eventually the GPS gets into a state where it won't lock, ie the GPS in the status bar just blinks forever.
Reboot has fixed this every time.
When the JSS15J first installed, the GPS also wouldn't lock. I had to turn on WiFi/Mobile assistance for it to lock the first time. After that first lock, I could turn off WiFi/Mobile assistance and it would still lock on its own.

Anyone else having GPS issues, as in, not working at all? Any ideas for a fix?
