[Q] note 8 downgrading inquiry - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

hi everyone, first of all i have to mention that im a total newbie, ive only flashed a stock rom once and i was a copy cat nothing more.
I recently upgraded my note 8 to 4.2.2 which I dint recommend, Battery life has beem reduced to like 30%. so now im trying to downgrade it back to 4.1.2 which was much better imo.
I dont know which rom version to flash, there are many with different codes and country, here is a screenshot for the "about" section, please provide me with the best stock rom fo3 my tablet.

thanks in advance guys, and if u know how to fix the battery drain problem let me know, also some tips to prevent bricking my tablet while flashing would be great.

I have 4.2.2 and found most of my issues from Google Music app, and having over 45 GB of MP3 files. They show up as 115mb in the folder in system. HA!!! My MP3 files had some underline characters in the names. This is mostly from Itunes but MS media player will do it if configured in the file management for rip settings.
Once I cleared up the issues, I get the same battery drain as with a custom ROM which I reverted back from.
You should look for my battery drain / charge fix on this forum. It has all the fixes I could find when troubleshooting my issues with battery drain.
I get about 10% drain every hour with normal use.
When 4.4.2 comes out for Samsung Note 8.0 I am sure it will be even better.
Since using 4.2.2 I would not dream of going to 4.1.2. Haven't had it and find 4.2.2 has some features that 4.1.2 does not have. Just google screwed the pooch with Music player on their last two updates.

after flashing new rom make sure to do battery calibration - get app from play store - it will get you back to a more normal battery life.

Search for saferoot.zip.
You do not need a battery calibration app to fix your issue.
It looks like DVMS is your issue. Once rooted with saferoot, you will not need triangle away to clear your counter, just install four apps to allow hiding of root and disable DVMS.
First thing find Xposed installer 2.5 and install. On google play store search for Substrate and install and search RootCloak and install do not install the xposed version just the app. Search DVMS in google play store and install. RootCloak is simple to config and runs at start up. Xposed is a wee different, as you will have settings for xposed and various options to perform tasks, one of which is modules. From there you can activate the modules you install for xposed. Once activated you must reboot again. Yes there will be a few reboots before all 4 apps are running on your android. DVMS is an activate and forget app, about half of the xposed apps are that way. Though only a few apps will work with the Note 8.0 without any issues. With a keen eye, you will find that many of the smaller modules can be found in larger ones, Wanam module for example.
I have an extensive setup with Xposed for many of my mods. So if you have any issues or questions, I can be of assistance.
Yes, I find disabling DVMS to be the better thing to do for accurate battery measurement. Wanam makes both DVMS disabler and Wanam Xposed, the later has DVMS disabler as one of the many options in this larger module. You may opt for that instead, I prefer newbies to stick with simple tasks before diving into the whole enchilada.

Google Maps - old version killable in running processes

Found an old working version that was killable in running processes.
Been looking for this for a while and naturally it was right under my nose here at xda
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12890318&postcount=222
somewhere right around version 5.4 or 5.5 they modified the app to never die, when stopped from running services.
got sick of freezing the app in titanium after every use...and just stopped using it
now this old version 5.3.1 is killable right from running processes.
no more unauthorized big brother data collecting, thanks though for offering.
to install use root explorer and replace maps.apk with this version (rename it to maps.apk) in /system/app
then reboot, it will automatically install.
uninstall your current version with titanium backup first.
the latest google maps can be force closed from the app list...
its a little more menu navigating than desired to kill each time but i guess it works.
v5.3.1 can be killed from running processes and is a good solution if you dont need some minor features of the latest version
to create a widget to running processes, long press the home screen, select shortcuts, scroll to settings, select 'running processes'
just tested 5.4.0 and it remained in running processes after stopping
so this is it...for the weary...use 5.3.1
you need autorun manager. it keeps most apps from starting up on their own. works for me with the latest version of google maps.
and then you always have autorun manager, running...
one more thing i dont need

its not a task killer that needs to be running. it modifies apps by taking away thier autostart permissions. you close it after youre done, and thats basically it.
I have the most update google maps and its never in running processes. I read somewhere that unchecking everything gps related you'll be able to close it.
Your problem could be you have apps the poll your location every so often. Even if you have gps off it'll use cell towers and get a approx. Location.
Try going into location settings and unchecking these boxes.
Specifically Googles Location Services that grants apps premission to find you.

ok and then when i start an app that relies on these services they wont find my location like i want them to...
just saying
there's nothing wrong with v5.3.1
it works just as good as 6.x - or better imo
thanks jdee...sounds like a good solution to my issues with the new google maps
just a shame i should have to spend money on the pro version for my phone to behave the way i desire.

Double post.
jdee i tried autorun manager and was unable to make it die from 'running processes'
i tried disabling receivers and also chuck norris mode.
the only way i was able to kill it was to use 'force stop' in the 'ALL' app list manager
i guess this works, just a little more menu navigation than desired.
autorun manager is useless at killing maps, unless i'm missing a setting.
also autorun manager did indeed start itself after i closed it
Am I the only person who gets great battery life and performance (even on cm9) and doesn't have to modify/kill/force stop/freeze/remove apps/remove auto start permissions/disable apps/disable services/disable functions for anything? I just use the phone. No issues, great battery, great performance, system recovers as much ram as I need when I need it. Can go a week of up time without any slow downs or excessive battery drain no problem.
Just saying/asking.

Nope! A no go with custom ROMs.
ATT Note 8.0 has locked boot loader and will brick if you install an unsigned ROM.
This is very disappointing... So I'm stuck?

IMO the samsung ROM is good. Just a wee behind. One thing you have on your side is rooting.
Once rooted, you can use framework mods to enhance the features.
I tested Civato's ROM and Kernel. Found it good but lacks supporting 64GB SD cards with Exfat.
Had way too many issues with Fat32 to call it worth while. Speed was good, but I realized after letting myself get use to the OEM ROM, there was not much difference.
If anything I recommend getting Solid Explorer Pro and Titanium Backup Pro..., they are worth their price on Google.
I removed all the apps that I can get on Google Play most of them are Google apps, but there is a few that you can obtain.
Once I removed all the Google apps... kept play store, I installed what I wanted. Don't bother with Google Music Player, it will run even when you reboot.
I kept Samsung Keyboard, and found it better than SwiftKey and Swipe Keyboard. As it has quite a bit of features you would not expect in a stock keyboard.
Setup my voice and language to be Ivona UK Welsh English, it is the best sounding of the English language. Google is setup to be the voice recognition.
My Samsung voice will be Ivona, and any Google voice in Google Now will be Google.
I setup a number of things with the framework mods, so it will take some time booting to completely load HD Widgets, if you choose to go that route.
Once ATT releases 4.4.3 in April, I may hold off until Xposed Framework gets a major overhall for 4.4.x.
I recommend the non framework version of Ghost Hide Root, with plugin. There is a framework version, but it does not work well with Samsung ROM.
Startup manager also is a good framework app, but there is a paid app that goes even further... I kept the Xposed app because it was smaller.
Don't bother with Power / battery apps... they tend to hog memory, and don't do much better than having your tablet do power saving mode when browsing or reading.
I keep WIFI and Power save mode on all the time. Yet to find a real issue with speed. Able to watch streamed movies and Miracast without hicups.
Oh by the way... I dropped Greenify as well.. seems to take up a lot of memory. I just stop some apps that allow not to be started during boot. Be careful, as some are part of the OS. I stopped All email apps, this way when I am wanting email I just open them. Also you can manually sync if you chose to. Though it can be annoying if you open mail for the first part of the day and find 40 emails waiting. On vibrate or notification sound it can be a bit annoying.

Battery discussion

On 4.4.4 I used to be able to get 5-5:30 ost but since updating it to lollipop and beyond I nearly get 4-4:30 I want to know if anybody els has been getting this issue or how to fix it and yes all the bells and whistles are turned off
Are you using freeza Beastmode kernel? Are you on the OG5 modem? These have been my most recent bumps in battery capacity; the biggest since KitKat actually.

Heavy usage today but ready to plugin and charge for tomorrow. The usage for apps shown is a bit higher than usual but the overall stats and SOT are darn good. Running OB7/OB7 bootloader/ customized with Xposed/OG5 modem and Beastmode kernel. Maybe the improved battery comes from the OG5 stuff.

Debloated ROM, freeze or delete apps that waste away at the battery, use auto brightness. Look for apps that wake excessively. Have you tried L Speed Mod? It will make Google Services behave. I use that with default settings, dump third party apps' cache and browser cache (including Google Play and Google Play Services) every 12 hours on a schedule and use an app by chain fire called recently to keep apps from running so much unneeded. Watch for rogue or faulty apps in the Xposed error log. Source close browser and other apps that like to keep running with back to kill app and use an ad blocker.
But really I think it has more to do with being indoors mostly on Wi-Fi and using Wi-Fi calling that gets those results. I have to credit the 5.1.1 kernel and modem too. OB7 wasn't always this good.
Half screen brightness would most likely to bright for me. What's wrong with auto brightness? It may save you some battery.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
I used to do a lot of that disable things I didn't need like s voice and bloat but for some reaons I didn't reason calls or text and I credit that to all the mods I did with the phone so I haven't really moded in a while but since then I get bad battery life, and no I used to use auto brightness but then afew days ago I realized whats the point of not enjoying your phone how you want to. But dam you sure do a lot, none of that has any negative impacts>?
Not really. I go with what works. Some users just aren't happy with some things and change this and that until more content with it.

i did everything you said , got recently and also l speed rom, put the freza kernel. but my question is how do you put a scheduler? and how do you find out which apps run in the back round? if you uninstall google apps and apps that are form Samsung would that effect in anyway the phone?
I use an older application I purchased a while on an older phone that needed more memory expansion for app data. Link2SD pro did that plus had the scheduler so I still use it for that rather than buying another task manager. Couldn't tell which to use or if there are better or free ones.

Game Tuner: A complicated problem

Hello everyone, you might all remember the samsung app called Game tuner which was for me really a game changer. Especially the resolution option it offered. As you might know samsung caps all the games on their devices to 75% resolution, so your never getting that 1440P image probably to save power. Now with most games this isn't an issue, I honestly don't even notice it. However games which include "pixel art" do suffer issues. For example rollercoaster tycoon classic. Which honestly does not look good because it's not 1:1, it's especially noticeable when you zoom out, everything becomes a pixelated mess. Here's an example, the first image is from my s5 which does still have a working game tuner (put to 100% of course otherwise it's the same mess as the s9), as you can see things are nice and sharp, the second image is from my s9.
{

So naturally I would love to get game tuner back, so that's what I tried. Now the main cullprit seems to be the Samsung Game optimizing service. Because Game tuner has worked on android pie for me, it stopped working after a certain update from the optimizing service, with that update game tuner stopped working and now display's something along the lines of please update the game optimizing service. So my first idea was to to revert to an older version of the service, unfortunately it wasn't quite as easy as it sounds. I'm trying to do this all on an unrooted s9 btw. Since it's a system app I couldn't just remove and reinstall it, so I tried to uninstall updates which didn't quite work. Than I tried to edit the apk of an older version of the service so it had a higher version code than my current installed version with APK Easy tools (decompiling it, chancing apktool.yml and recompiling). Which unfortunately didn't work, it spit out the following error on ADB: INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE: Package signatures do not match the previously installed version; Now i'm definitely not an expert on this topic and didn't know how to fix this it's different from the normal upgrade error though which is: INSTALL_FAILED_VERSION_DOWNGRADE so i kinda felt like I made progress but since I didn't know how to fix this new issue I left it as a Dead end (if anyone knows how to maybe fix this, please let me know). So I went with a differente route I tried to uninstall it completely with ADB so I used this guide on XDA: https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/ (which uses the following command to "remove" and app/package: pm uninstall -k --user 0 <name of package>) And it indeed disappeared from the phones app list, but when I tried to install the older version It still didn't work, on the phone the installation failed again, and on pc I got the same error messages didn't matter if I used the edited APK or the normal (old) one. I did some more research but I couldn't really find a solution, it's a rather unique problem I guess. My rather limited knowledge about android development and ADB didn't really help either. So now my question is, does anyone know a way to make it work? I pretty much just want to change the resolution from 75% to 100% on games, so It doesn't necessarily have to be Game tools, any other tool which could do the same thing would also be perfect. As long as I'm able to remove that pixilated mess from the game.
TL;DR:
Need Game tuner or something else to change the default game resolution from 75% to 100%, tried a lot of things to get it working again by downgrading the Samsung game optimizing service, but couldn't get that downgraded. Does anyone know a solution?
Greetings Thomas Mulder
EDIT: hah while proof reading this post I noticed the aspect ratio of the second image wasn't right which reminded me of something else, the s9 forces an aspect ration of 21:9 on the game. RCT classic does not like this which causes the mess. So that kinda fixes my RCT problem, still not as sharp as could be but way better now. If anyone still has the answer to a fix for game tuner I would stil gladly receive it though!
İ hope we get it back in android 10
I've been wondering about that too. I notice there is a "decrease resolution" toggle for the stock game launcher app. I wonder if that provides the same functionality

General OOS 11.2.6.6 Release : What are your opinions about it.

Sorry If there's already some talks about that on different topics, but I find easier to talk about this latest release on a centralised one.
My findings are that Oplus updated the gamebar which now takes more onscreen space, but is now easier to use
The second one is a real thermal behavior change : I used to flash Omega Kernel on 11.2.5.5 and quickly the o+ 9Pro stabilized under 42/43°C . On the latest OOs build with stock kernel, I'm now @ 37-38°C after 30 min of playing the same game. 5-6 degres gained is pretty a good upgrade.
I'll check what are the photo behavior changes as I've done few reproductible raw photos to test, and see how the white balance upgrades are this week end

I deeply can't say that comparing two different iteration of kernel. But it appears to me O+ finally made some progress concerning power and heat behaviour.
I will for sure flash omega kernel as I did with every releases, but I'm happy to see that vanilla stock kernel is working better than ever
My battery life dramatically improved with the .6.6 update. Granted the phone is still new for me, but I went from ~4h SOT every day to 6h+ yesterday

I'm running Omega, but I was running omega before so although I'm sure Omega helps battery, it was still not great before the update. The new changes he made to reduce watermarking may have been a factor, and I also disabled RAM optimization in Oneplus settings which I'm pretty sure helped.
TY for the explanation :=)
Noticed that the oneplus contacts apk won't work with the upgrade. Have to fall back to the original Google contacts apk.

Camera .. still have a focus issue. Certain areas are perfectly focused and others are not sharp. Like a bokeh effect.

The notification thing is most likely due to Oneplus's "Intelligent control" for battery saving. It may be "optimizing power usage" too aggressively for your apps. Go to the power settings for each app with the issue individually and change it to "do not optimize" to ensure you get notifications on time
